Buccaneers: Playoff Team

October 10th, 2018

“Mr. Glazer, I just want to make sure you realize I don’t coach defense.”

The facts don’t lie, no matter how much negativity might be flowing through some Tampa Bay fans following the Windy City Wipeout.

If the season ended today, your beloved Buccaneers would be headed to the postseason for the first time since the 2007 campaign. And no, wiseguy, Joe’s talking as a playoff team, not as spectators on a motivational field trip.

That’s the word from NFL.com, which began tracking the “playoff picture” this week.

As it stands now, Tampa Bay is the sixth seed in the NFC. And their record would send them to Chicago for the Wild Card round of the playoffs.

Yes, you can weep for the Bucs defense and lament the prospects of how it could derail a season after a stunning 2-0 start. Or, you can celebrate the Bucs’ No. 1-ranked offense, one that isn’t even firing on all cylinders yet (see the running game).

Can the Bucs beat the 1-4 Falcons on Sunday and then the Browns? Sure they can. And if the Bucs do get to 4-2 — a first since the 2011 season — you’ll see them in the “playoff picture” for a while.

yeah they could, and they could not, take it one damn game at a time, and let’s see how this putrid defense responds after that beat down in chi-town

  2. adam from ny Says:

we are in a very very important mini-stretch for this bucs team…these next 4 weeks are telltale…buc up or shut up!

  4. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Can you do the more realistic top 10 draft predictions so we can see what our new GM will be angling towards, I wanted Bosa but now that he has that serious injury, not sure and all the clemson DL currently are way overrated, so maybe trade down get a couple #1s or more 2s…drafting a 3-4 NT was another in a long list of bad licht personnel moves, he should have picked derwin james esp when 2019 is the year of the DL in the first round but again licht has no clue on what he is doing at gm……..to quote Jim Mora; “PLAYOFFS!?”

  5. adam from ny Says:

joe you really need to put a pic of jim mora’s face up there when he ranted: “playoffs, playoffs!!!”

  6. BucThis Says:

Good Lord get over the Derwin James bullsh!t. HES NOT ON OUR TEAM. If youre going to ride Derwins D!ck go be a chargers fan…

  7. Hodad Says:

If the season ended now after four games we’d make the playoffs. If the season ended after the first game we would’ve won the division. If my dad had tots he’d be my mother!

  8. Darin Says:

    Bucthis
Plus if Derwin was a Buc in this defense he would suck. People always underestimate coaching and system. He fits what the chargers do. Hell the bucs never run a safety blitz. Wtf would people want him here? This d is a joke.

  9. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Ha good one BucThis I will write that down for a useful comeback in the future to remember it……the point is…the 2019 draft class coming out is a dominate DL class, so get James in 2018, then the DL in 2019, because you get a comparable or better player at DT and get a once in a lifetime safety…but this jason gump grabs a Kicker in the 2nd round and some fans expect a super bowl product on the field, this is a 5-11 team this year and probably next year

  10. Buccnbeleiver Says:

Oh lord, Joe. Why’d you have to bring up that the Bucs are going to lose to the Browns?

  11. NJBucsFan Says:

Really? We are using if the season ended focus commentary after the first quarter of the season? Has it really come to this?

  12. Lamarcus Says:

    Joe

This is embarrassing. Why are we or why would anyone celebrate a playoff clinch at 2-2 ???

    We done hit rock bottom

  13. BucThis Says:

Ok…..So lets stop playing “Fantasy” Football.. as in playing what ifs. Lets get to reality here.

Exhibit A- We do not and probably will never have Derwin James. Let it go.

Exhibit B- Even if we DID have Derwin, there is NO way of knowing how he would play HERE.

Exhibit C- OUR COACHES CAN NOT COACH UP SECONDARY PLAYERS

Exhibit D- You have no idea of what the potential is for DL in college. For the main reason that…its college. Different game speed, different environment. Also, speaking of DL, Vea has played in 1 game. Who knows how he will turn out.

And finally, Exhibit E- Yes, Licht grabbed a kicker in the 2nd round. Can you really blame him?! Until this year our kicking game has been a JOKE. In close games you want a clutch kicker. Hey, at least he tried.

In conclusion, stop with the “what ifs” or “could have beens” the players we got are our players. In my opinion, the reason our players aren’t improving or getting better directly reflects back on the coaching and the scheme. You want better players? Demand better coaches.

  14. Bucsfan951 Says:

Damn dusty! How does Derwin’s D taste?

  15. ben Says:

LIcht is in charge and bucs still have holes on both sides. He has had plenty of years to make the bucs a top tier team. Lets hope the new gm will turn this team around.

  16. Mike Johnson Says:

Echoing the famous words of that Ole Saints Coach Mora…
    PLAYOFFS…PLAYOFFS?
    This team….PLAYOFFS?!!!!!!!

  17. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Id like to tell you on the Derwin D tastiness but as you have all pointed out so eloquently he is not in tampa and let me spell this out to you like the middle school dults you are……..NFL teams except the bucs OBVIOUSLY have legit scouting departments (Wikipedia that if you do not comprehend) so they should have scouted the 15 players from Clemson, Ohio St, Alabama and Houston, that could start right now for your bucs, they will all be available in 2019….so knowing that as most REAL GMS, did, then you go and get a position of need and in this case that is a future ROOKIE all pro….but the bucs and licht are 5-11 for a reason and the fact YOU just defended drafting a kicker in any round shows whose D you are all over and you have ZERO clue why the bucs have a 24-48 record in lichts tenure, you probably think taking vh3 over laremy tunsil was a solid move too….your franchise building 101 class is over for today

  18. adam from ny Says:

    theres an old saying:

    #WhenMyBallsAreSlappingYourChinWheresMyDee

  19. BucEmUp Says:

They will hang Jameis out to dry with td after td and I’m sure the “REALIST FAN OF THEM ALL ” will blame it on playcalling and lack of talent .

Only way this team wins any games is in a shootout. Or poisoning the breakfast of the opposing team pre game and making sure they can’t walk not the field.

On second thought all they would have to do is put the cheerleaders out there on offense , I’m sure they could hang 40 on us by the 3rd quarter

  20. BucEmUp Says:

Celebrating the teams record being 2 and 2 after four weeks of play is what losers do.

    It’s the Buccaneer way!

  21. BucThis Says:

Oh Dusthty, we get it. You’re favorite player wasnt selected and now its everybody’s fault and only your opinion matters.

    1. Clemson has the most overrated DL in college for the past decade.
    2. No GM can know whether or not a rookie will become all pro. If that was true Brady, Brees, Rodgers, and Wilson would’ve went #1.
    3. Im pretty sure the 24-48 record that Licht has directly reflects the Def. coaching and scheme that has failed twice.
    4. Only reason you don’t like Licht is because he didnt draft Derwin.
5.VH3 could have or can be a good better in a different scheme…you know like playing man? You know, because he was doing well in the nickel?

Listen, Dusthty if you’re that upset about Derwin James maybe all of us here will pitch in and buy you a jersey. To be this upset about it is kind of concerning. Perhaps, instead of watching Bucs games you should tune in to the Chargers game and watch your favorite player. I know sometimes you may feel…well.. entitled but this is the real world and unfortunately you dont always get your way.

  22. Jim Says:

2 and 2, thanks to Fitz. And for the Derwin Dalvin crowd, it appears the Glazers are shying away from FSU rookies, or am I mistaken? If I made a mistake here, I’m sure to be corrected…

  23. Back2bucball Says:

I like to call it, chit show in Chi town… Playoffs! U kidding me?

  24. Sunday_44 Says:

Wouldn’t surprise me at all to learn that Licht picked VV simply because everyone called the Bucs picking Derwin James the worst kept secret.

And then Oh Yeah, VV was 1A and Derwin was 1B.

Yet even Derwin said you will have to pick me before Tampa just hours before the draft.

I’m excited about VV and I think he is going to be really good, but I can’t help thinking Licht changed his mind LAST SECOND

  25. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Yes as a UF grad i really want that derwin james jersey, BUT as a bucs fan and sick of this losing, ya derwin james was the pick along with guice, along with laremy tunsil, along with vonn bell, DE from Jax, the draft is LOADED with D front players next year but licht will be gone and so will his bs drafting……..you see a pattern here, you and your ignorant stick carrier crowd are so blinded by your fearless leader, its ok buddy the next GM will walk into a mess and a horrible team but I will have faith he fixes it and the bucs are competitive in 2021

  26. Bucsfanman Says:

We’re a “playoff team” IF we can routinely outscore our opponents. If our defense plays even middle of the pack, we’re in.

  27. Lord Cornelius Says:

““Yeah but you drafted and signed that putrid secondary”

    Bryan Glazer”

This secondary and defense has been complete sh1t for 4 coaching regimes and the last 2 GMs. At this point it feels like an organizational problem.

Even when we had some good secondary players it sucked.

MANY good defenses get by with average or worse CBs. It’s called having a decent front 7 and being creative with it. Unless McCOy/Jpp/Lavonte/Kwon/etc all just suck now. There’s too many decent names/talent to be a bottom 3 defense.

Seattle has a ton of new bodies on defense. Basically a sh1t load of no names. They are doing WAY better than us on defense. It’s not just talent I’m sick of that man. These results are sickening.

On the plus side I don’t see how we could be that much worse than what we’ve been. Improvement seems almost guaranteed in that sense lol

  28. 813bucboi Says:

has it become so embarrassing that we dream about playoffs after 4games but start talking about the draft after 6games…..lol….

target baby bosa or ed oliver……rashad gray from Michigan is a player to watch to….of the Clemson dlinemen, I like dexter lawerance….

but it may be wise to trade down and collect picks so we don’t continue to hear about talent and depth…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!!….#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  29. Couch Fan Says:

If the defense doesnt dramatically improve. There will be no playoffs for the 38th season in a row. History suggests nothing will change for this team. The only thing this team is fighting for is avoiding the basement of the division, again. Prove me wrong Bucs..

  30. ndog Says:

Speaking of Realist, he is ok, cause I have not seen one post from him since the Bears game?

  31. charles Stevens Says:

To quote a past coach “Playoffs,Playoffs did you say Playoffs ” Something here that this mgmt forgets i think is the loooong losing tradition of this team.Winning percentage around 35% since the beginning in 1976.Loyal fans like myself ,and i do love the Bucs ,however my Monday mornings are ruined because i have so much faith in them .Year after year let down.Frustration is where the negativity is coming from. This 2018 team is loaded with talent and were LAST in defense from a club that prided themselves in that aspect of the game.I love to watch good offense yet i would like to see the Bucs dominate on both sides.
I know it takes time to build through the draft ,but ten years have gone bye with the same results.
How bout a win this week against the falcons say 38-10.

  32. '79Defense Says:

It’s nice to dream, Joe. That’s all we’ve been doing for years with this team.

  33. adam from ny Says:

3 cheers for that ron burgundy attire that jason licht is sporting in the above picture…

mr glazer: “jason , can i ask, wtf on earth makes you want to emulate ron burgundy???”

mr licht: “please mr glazer, just let it be…it’s my thing, i’m just a huge ron burgundy supporter…let it be…i’m clean shaven, i wear deodorant, and i promise to get a competent 2nd rounder for you next year”

  34. 813bucboi Says:

    ndog

he wont pull his skirt down and show his face until we win….

then he’ll say all smitty needed was the bye to fix things and the “real fans” have faith in smitty…..he’ll say this defense is much better than last year smitty is still coaching the lovie out of players…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!

  35. Brandon Says:

You know what, Dusty? I desperately wanted Luke Keuchly a few drafts back. Most of the moronic Buc fans wanted Trent Richardson, the rest of the morons wanted Morris Claiborne. How did that turn out? You don’t hear my crying in every post or about how the players that I’ve wanted for us in every draft since then (except Winston and OJ Howard, because they were my desired picks) has turned out far better than the ones the Bucs chose. Cadillac Wiliams? I wanted one of the DEs, either Merriman or Ware. Clayton? I wanted Stephen Jackson Adrian Clayborn, i desperately wanted Cam Jordan. look at me, I was freaking right! You may turn out to be right, but STFU, it’s over. BTW, a big part of James’ production has been on the blitz, he’s got 3 sacks, he’d have ZERO with the Bucs because they won’t blitz their LBs not to mention their safeties. He would be a different player with us… and he may turn out to be nothing in the NFL. I would’ve been fine with James and was a tad baffled by Vea but he’s a Buc and now I root for him to do well. You can either get on board or get off the ship.

  36. DislocatedBucsFan Says:

Licht doesn’t coach d but he fired Lovie and don’t see why he can’t fire mike. Also he’s responsible for staffing the Bucs D. He hasn’t been too successful on that endeavor. Outside of JPP and Brent Grimes.

  37. D the Bucs fan Says:

Everybody we were 2-2 last season. Joes wtf. Were we talking about playoffs when we got wiped out in Minnesota

  38. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

Agree that if Derwin had been the pick, Smith would have no idea how to use him as intelligently as the Chargers. Rush a safety?? Oh well I don’t know, that’s pretty risky. Let’s just have everyone play deep. Bend don’t break.

  39. I'm a Tandyman Bucs Fan Says:

If you keep winning your in. If you keep losing your out!!!! LOL Damn it took a Rocket Scientist like me to figure that out for you boys!!!! Hell let’s wait maybe 8 or 9 more games before we start that thread.

  40. T REX Says:

It’s not how you start but how you finish. Joe, how much you willing to bet this team makes the playoffs?

A ten spot? LOL. You think Smitty suddenly catches up to the rest of the NFL? LVD and Kwon start being able to play pass defense?

    Stop daydreaming.

  41. Reach87 Says:

Is there a Buc fan on this site? Does no one believe we are a better team this year and will prove it this year? (I didn’t say last year or any other year…different team, different opponents and the games have been played). Does anyone not take some measure of joy in our top ranked offense and potential to play better defense as the weeks go by? Maybe, but not enough to preclude every thread being littered with “x, y, or z sucks; we could have had what’s his name, we can’t beat x,y, or z; and we’ll finish 4-12;…and so on”. You can’t help yourselves but to continually trash someone on the team you claim to be a fan of. You should root for the Pats, Eagles, Rams or some other team. Admit you’re not a Bucs fan and move along. Queue the “we have a right…” lines. You do have a right, but if you do it with every thread you are not a fan. A fan roots for their team instead of taking shots at every opportunity. Who wants a fan like that? Sad. Go Bucs!
