Browns Run Defense Stinks

October 17th, 2018

“Let’s maul.”

Last week, the Bucs faced a Falcons team with a poor run defense and — Poof! — the Tampa Bay ran the ball successfully.

And here comes Cleveland, and they can’t stop the run, either.

The 2-3-1 Browns are allowing a whopping 4.6 yards per carry and teams average 142.7 yards per game against them on the ground, worst in the AFC.

This should translate to another balanced and high-scoring day for the Bucs offense and its stunning array of weapons. And every last one of those weapons is healthy.

The Browns, though, do get after quarterbacks and force turnovers. Somehow, they are holding opposing QBs to a completion percentage of just 58.4 percent, whereas the Dirk Koetter Defense allows QBs a 76.8 percent completion rate. Think about that contrast for a minute!

Regardless, the Browns defense is not one that should slow the lethal Bucs offense, especially at home under what’s forecast to be bright sunny skies.

Good news for them is their run D will be a lot better after this game.

Good news for us is this will be jw’s last game as starter.

  2. TheBucsAnthem Says:

……………well the Bucs already knows what Barber brings to the table, but they’re not sure what ROJO still has yet to offer, soooooooooooooo….

I would completely run ROJO on atleast 50% of the run plays called because Koetter has to figure out if ROJO has it or not as an NFL back

So far ROJO has been an absolute and complete disappointment

ROJO has looked average at best

So if Koetter puts ROJO on the field and he performs poorly again, then we all know that this was a wasted pick

  3. Rick Says:

Lol, that means absolutely nothing. I hope I’m wrong and we can jump start this kitten running attack. Only to rush the ball 12 times.

  4. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Robertm do you really think Koetter will bench JW for Fitz??????

    what makes you think that?????????????

no way that happens because ownership needs to see what JW has before the end of the season

  5. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

This stat is totally skewed thanks to melvin gordon of SD running rough shot through the Brownies, we have no one close to Melvin Gordon on the roster, similar skewed stats as barber being a good rb, that had 2.6 ypc before the crappy falcons came calling

  6. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

I seriously would love to see our running game put up about 200 yards this week. That would be incredible, and would be a great overall benefit to this team to add that element to our equation.

  7. Robert Says:

@ anthem trade deadline coming up, and I see the bucs losing this game as well and the trajectory for the season is not good.

that means we have a losing season, yet jw will be expecting to get PAID. he’s proven not to be worth it base on Fitz performance with the same offense.

if jw’s is to have any trade value it’s before a complete implosion, which would mean very ASAP IMO.

so yeah, they lose this game and jw’s gone IMO

  8. LakeLand Says:

You can’t continue to run the ball, when you’re behind

    Pittsburgh 23-7

    Chicago 38-3

    Atlanta 21-6

You actually have to lead games, or keep the game close
    Before you pound the rock

  9. Sunday_44 Says:

Really could have sworn @Robert wasn’t even gonna post again if Jameis was starting, yet here he is again with his shenanigans.

Must have been your daughter he groped!!

  10. 813bucboi Says:

who cares about that….ATL has a lousy run defense and still won the game…..and the browns have just as many weapons as us….this will come down to QB play….will Winston outplay Mayfield?….who sacks the QB more?….and who wins the turnover battle?….

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!….#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  11. adam from ny Says:

just give barber his 22 carries dirk…is it too much to ask…???

and we all know rojo is just a lame-o wide receiver a la charles sims

  12. Lamarcus Says:

    Garbage Bowl

  13. Robert Says:

    @ sunday

I do it for my country. they call me Americas JBF Poster

  14. Season Is Over Says:

Such BS. The excuses never stop. Did Barkely not get the ball when the Giants were down 20? Of course he did. When you are effective you keep getting it.

  15. Darin Says:

Yeah but Cleveland is 12th in scoring defense. I think the Browns are ok with other teams picking up 4 and 5 yard runs. And they can defend the pass for sure. Keeps them in games. Theyve had 4 OT games already, crazy. Now if Baker turns into Montana this thing might not be close. Playing catchup plays right into their strengths. Cmon Duff show us all what we’ve been missing!! And I do think the heat factors into this one. Should be able to run all day. Not sure if Monk is patient enough or if we’ll be down by 21 tho. One way to find out!!

  16. Buc4evr Says:

“Stunning array of weapons”? Seriously, Jameis and crew will find a way to screw the game up. If not Jameis, surely our wonderful $88 M defense will find a way to allow Mayfield to throw 6 td’s. When will this clown show end?

  17. Wausa Says:

Browns have a good pass defense. Probably a more balanced attack in this game is what the Bucs should attempt.

If the Bucs can keep the Browns at 28 points or below I am confident the Bucs will win.

  18. adam from ny Says:

    simple:

    bucs win this sunday 31-20

  19. adam from ny Says:

i’m confident the bucs are gonna show up this weekend…

if not, the boo-birds are gonna be uber loud out there a rayjay

  21. AKickInTheBucNuts Says:

So the Browns Run Defense Stinks.

Does this even matter when our whole defense stinks worse?

Sure, we can attack certain aspects of any teams weakness, but it seems more often than not, we come out with the “L” because overall, we have more Stink than they do.

After this season, I’m hoping for a big roll of toilet paper to wipe the stink from this team…most of them coaches.

I can’t name one player who is progressing or has progressed over the years because they got coached-up in Tampa.

It seems Jameis has done most of his work on his own, which might explain why he can’t eliminate the 2 or 3 dumb plays a game. He’s not getting the right coaching.

Something is just not right with the entire coaching staff.
    It pretty much…well, stinks.

  22. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

    Joe,

If we can get Dirk Koetter a defensive coordinator that can hold teams to 20 points, we’re going to the Super Bowl!

    -Mark my words

  23. LakeLand Says:

Some people are going on like the Bucs has the ” Four Horsemen”.

    Hello….Reality Check

They are ranked 31st in rushing

Only 2 teams has a lower YPC than them

  24. LakeLand Says:

    Cleveland might turn the tables
    And run on the Bucs
    They are 4th in rushing
    An average 4.6 YPC
A full yard more than the Bucs

  25. jmarkbuc Says:

    Kick

“It seems Jameis has done most of his work on his own, which might explain why he can’t eliminate the 2 or 3 dumb plays a game. He’s not getting the right coaching”

Well..I was under the impression that’s why we kept Klueless in the first place.

I’d like to think somebody like Andy Reid or Sean McVay would make a difference, but you look at that chuck down the field that was an INT at the 2yd line or The INT at the back of the end zone, I mean JW just impulsively does crazy things.

Not sure it CAN be coached out of him. No one ever has.

  26. LakeLand Says:

Why run the ball when you’re down by 2 scores or more

And you averages 3.6 YPC as a team?
That would look pretty DUMB to me

    Especially when you have:

    Cam Brate
    Adam Humphries
    DeSean Jackson
    Mike Evans
    Chris Godwin
    O.J Howard

    SMH

  27. adam from ny Says:

    hey joes:

maybe at some point you guys should put up a thread about the bucs uniforms…the digital alarm clock unis…i call them the “digital alarm clock” uniforms for whatever reason…but i have not heard anything good said about these uniforms since they switched over to them…i’m not a big fan of these unis, but have rallied for an “all pewter color rush” look…that would be really hot actually…with hints of orange and red…anyway a thread regarding the bucs weird uniforms might be an eye opener at some point…i was really feeling the old pewter and red unis, and the original orange joints were just so nostalgic and gripping due to the bold color and happy winking pirate…also a orange retro color rush jersey and pants would be completely sick…the worst color rush choice is the all red…all pewter or all orange retro would be the move…

anyway, thing haven’t exactly been good since we switched over to the digitsl clock uniforms…it ould be interesting to see if sales on gear have declined since the switch as well…in layman’s terms, the new unis kind of suck…

someone should do a study on sales, team record, etc…and all vital info since we turned to the digital clock uniforms…

i know winning cures all, but the unis are not that good of a look…the helmet is straight fire tho

  28. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Lakeland, I think some of the joes are buddies with licht and use this as the propoganda wing of jason licht and trying to get us to see what a great GM licht is, the guy is horrible as a GM and has neglected so many issues with this team which is why the team is terrible

  29. adam from ny Says:

    sorry – a lot of typos ^^^^^^^

  30. LakeLand Says:

So it’s a good idea to have Brate,Jackson,Hump, Godwin, Evans, Howard stand around with their hands on their hips.

Watching Barber, Jones run for 3 yards

  31. LakeLand Says:

    Dusthty

    I believe so

  32. Robert Says:

    @ lakeland

    RFLMAO

aint that the truth. Fitz made this offense hum like the patriots

  33. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Lakeland, you got some good and funny stuff today!!! barber is like the 8th option offensively on this team

  34. adam from ny Says:

jaboo and djax have real issues…djax just pouts without ole fitzie, and jaboo has gotten into his own head that he can’t throw a long ball to djax…the situation is weird like a lady with a beard

  35. LakeLand Says:

Peyton Barber ran for 82 yards against the Falcons
    Averaging 6.3 YPC
He also had a 28 yard run on their first series
Then on the next 2 drives, which the Bucs punted
    He had runs of 4, -2, 1,

  36. Mike Johnson Says:

LMAO! Our bucs are legendary for making opposing teams stats come up after we play them. Just about every team in the NFl licks their chops at playing us. I do expect this Defense to play a little better come Sunday. Baker Mayfield can throw both in and out of the pocket. The more pressure he gets, the better he scrambles and throws. We will need a pass rush. You guys are gonna see just how much one of your most hated Bucs D. Tackles is missed.

  37. Kobe Faker Says:

“So our secondary is facing the NFLs best slot reciever in Landry

Who is going to handle Antonio Calloway?(Kid is going to go over 140 yards)

Baker is going to think he is back in Oklahoma

Going to be like the Chicago game part 2

Baker- 4 tds, 325 yards. 82% completion percentage

38-25 (2 missed extra points) Cleveland easy win

at 230 pm sunday, there will be more people at Mons Venus than at RJS”

    Kobe Faker

  38. Lord Cornelius Says:

    @Lakeland

Most RBs who rush for 80-100 yards have a 20+ yard gain in there at least. THat’s normal.

IMO this game – like any other this season – comes down to the D.

Can the D keep Cleveland from scoring 21-28 points by half?

Hard to win a damn game when that keeps happening. And lol @ anyone trying to blame any of that on the offense or who the QB is or the run game.

We have WAY too big of a sample size at this point of seeing the WORST D in the league. Not bad. The WORST.

Last in points per drive / yards per drive in 2017 given up
Last in basically everything in 2018

    This isn’t complicated lol.

  39. Lord Cornelius Says:

I feel better tho now about this game after Kobe laid that prediction. Historically him predicting a terrible loss= a Bucs win it seems.

  40. theodore Says:

Devante Bond re-signed. We’re going to the Super Bowl!

  41. LakeLand Says:

    Kobe

They better not let Nick Chubb get a crease

If they do, he will punish them

  42. Conte Piscatelli Says:

So the really interesting part about this game is that I’m sure both teams, players, coaches, and fans circled this game at the beginning of the season thinking “at least we should win this game” it’s the game to determine who really is the worst run franchise in the NFL. Is going to be known as Cleveland vs Cleveland South, of Tampa vs the Great Lake Bucaneers?

  43. LakeLand Says:

    Conte Piscatelli

John Dorsey has Cleveland going in the right direction

    I can see the improvements

He had a excellent draft, signed some quality, young free agents

  44. Kobe Faker Says:

“LC, We need you to streak on the field with your “57” uni…

You represent all the sheep that bought the vintage collectible “57” Nowhere Spence jerseys

Baker has the exact skillset that have killed our Defense the last 3 years

330pm sunday will be 1 of the lowest times in Tama Bay bucs history

  45. Kobe Faker Says:

    LC,

Clev has 3 very good RBs
    2 very good wrs
    a very good young TE
and offensive line that is 5 times better than ours

    going to be ugly

  46. Bucsfanman Says:

IMO, there are 3 keys here: Defense (will we play any?!), kicking, and turnovers.
Frankly, every time we hear “This team is last…” in whatever, the Bucs give up the booty “making it rain” style like Kobe Faker at Mons!
If we throw more than 35+ times in THIS game, we are toast!

  47. unbelievable Says:

Prepared to be proved wrong on Sunday Joe.

There defense is way better than you are giving them credit for.

  48. unbelievable Says:

    *Their

  49. Not there yet Says:

Yea we’ll there was this same type of talk about Atlanta’s defense last week but here we go again

  50. adam from ny Says:

duffner gives good podium too…he seemed to be a really happy camper tho…musta got a raise to assume the coordinator position…

hopefully the next position duffner assumes isn’t the ole “bend over and take it” position…then he wont be all smiles…

smart man tho – he will be roaming the sidelines with an iron fist…lol…as opposed to smitty, up there in cool digs, sipping beer, scratching his forehead and playing pocket pool

  51. GhostofSchiano Says:

    813bucboi Says:

Who cares about that….ATL has a lousy run defense and still won the game…..and the browns have just as many weapons as us….this will come down to QB play….will Winston outplay Mayfield?….who sacks the QB more?….and who wins the turnover battle?….
    —————————————————————————————-
Which defense is lost on the field? Which Secondary misses assignments? Is out of Position? Dances on the sidelines when making a stop while trailing? Can’t cover, can’t tackle……………………..IT’S A BUCS LIFE

  52. GhostofSchiano Says:

Bucsfanman Says: Frankly, every time we hear “This team is last…” in whatever, the Bucs give up the booty “making it rain” style like Kobe Faker at Mons!

An the award for Best post of the week goes to……. Bucsfanman. APPLAUSE!!

    APPLAUSE!

  53. GhostofSchiano Says:

    Lord Cornelius Says:

I feel better tho now about this game after Kobe laid that prediction. Historically him predicting a terrible loss= a Bucs win it seems.
    —————————————————————————————–

And the girls at Venus say he is a lousy tipper.

  54. Jerry Jones Says:

And now the Browns will run it down our throat.

  55. Jerry Jones Says:

@Robert, you did say you would leave this site if JW started so be gone bitch.

  56. Reach87 Says:

Interesting how people keep coming back to the QB. Concur the issue is and will be about our Defense. I think we’ll play better and win. Go Bucs!

  57. Reach87 Says:

PS. This is one game in a season. It won’t on its own, define the Team, Duffner, the QB or the franchise. Go Bucs.

  58. Noles Says:

The Uniforms are horrible…. Please change them back to pewter and red or come up with some combo of red, pewter & orange w NORMAL #’s. Those digital #’s are pathetic. The color rush red as mentioned is AWEFUL….Helmet is ok but may warrant change if you redo the rest. I used to like the cream sickle orange road Uniforms which were all white. NEVER liked the Orange pants that was a bad look also… At least this way we can only laugh at their play and not how they look….

  59. Back2bucball Says:

Adam from NY, the uber boo birds will only boo jameis

  60. Clw JB Says:

If Duff plays an attacking style we will be fine…if he continues the off coverage zone concepts of his predecessor they are going to eat us alive –

We have a fast, undersized front 7 for the most part, we should be bringing that speed in all 7 gaps as often as possible forcing the rookie to make quick decisions

This isn’t rocket science, it’s football…apply pressure on every play on both sides of the ball, period

  61. Wausa Says:

    @Clw JB

I could not say it any better than you.

    I 100% agree

  62. Rod Munch Says:

Yet even with a rush defense this bad, Dirk’s run it up the middle on 1st down still won’t get more than the normal 1.8 yards per carry.
