Ali Marpet Gets Paid

October 9th, 2018

New pact.

UPDATED 2:10 p.m. – Would-be Bucs free agent Ali Marpet will be around a while.

The Bucs starting left guard has signed a contract, the Bucs announced today, that will keep Marpet around in theory through the 2023 season.

Per Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, the details are five years, $55 million with $27.125m in guarantees.

Joe is happy to learn this. And it might be a good deal. Guard Andrew Norwell left the Panthers last season in free agency and signed a five-year, $66.5 million contract with the Jaguars, with $30 million guaranteed. That made him the top-paid guard in the NFL when the contract was signed in March.

Two years ago, the Browns made guard Kevin Zeitler the top paid at the position with a five-year, $60 million deal with $23 million guaranteed. That’s pretty much in line with what Marpet just got.

Up next, left tackle Donovan Smith.

  6. Season Is Over Says:

    Who?

  7. gbobucsfan Says:

Too lazy to look up but is that a fair deal for both sides? Ali is a hard worker and good talent but hasn’t played up to his standards this year…yet.

  8. adam from ny Says:

remember when donovan smith rag-dolled monken with love as they headed to the locker room in new orleans?…maybe marpet can rag-doll mike smith on the way back to the locker room in atlanta this sunday…oh wait, smith doesn’t go near the actual team…lol

  9. webster Says:

    @ gbobuc

Considering the top guards in the league gets paid 13-14 mil per year, i would say getting paid on average 9.1 mil is fair.

  10. webster Says:

I love it. Joe has moderated every one of my comments for two weeks now. Too funny. He gets mad at me for calling him out but feels he can call fellow journalist buffoons. Smh
Joe is not mad at all. Why continue to misrepresent? Joe put your comments in moderation (along with dozens of other people) for misrepresenting the host and for attacking the host malicously, based on clear misrepresentations. Yes, Joe called Michael Clayton a Bucs buffoon for his commentary on the Bucs being a three-win team, and his blasts of Jameis and Dirk Koetter. Also, Clayton is not a journalist in any way.–Joe

  11. Season Is Over Says:

11 million per season? No way this guy is a top 10 OL. This is why we are last place each season.

  12. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

HUGE NEWS! — That is AWESOME.
Ali Marpet is most definitely worthy and will be a multi-year Pro-Bowler.

  13. Defense Rules Says:

Definitely fantastic news. Ali’s my favorite player on the offense for sure.

Noticed Joe that the Bucs have made several changes in defensive personnel. They replaced DT Jerel Worthy with Rakeem Nunez-Roches (307 lb DT who started 11 games for the Chiefs last year). Positive step. They also signed Safety Andrew Adams (5-11, 205) who played 30 games for the New York Giants over the past two seasons, starting 17 of them. Another positive step.

  14. Dewey Selmon Says:

Hey season, OL are like referees, when you don’t know who they are that means they are doing their job.

  15. Jmarkbuc Says:

    DR

Well let’s hope the new guys are good at communicating, and speak Smitty……

  16. adam from ny Says:

those 2 guys are freakin scrubs – get real ^^^^^^^^^^^^

“To win in the New NFL, You need to consistently pick winners in the draft with young players contributing under their rookie contract…

    our teams foundation/blueprint is flawed

The Teflon Gump isl setting this franchise back for the next 6 years”

    Good move by the Bucs

  19. BFFL Says:

This is ok…Now if Licht does this for Kwon then thats a different reaction

  20. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    “Candygram for Mongo”………

  21. Gambelero Says:

Hey Webster. At least someone is paying attention. My post are never moderated and I often say some pretty stupid things.

And writing mistakes, too numerous to counting…

  22. Joe Says:

    “Candygram for Mongo”

    “Mahn-go like can-DEE.”

  23. D-Rome Says:

Congratulations to Ali Marpet. Donovan Smith should be next to get paid.

I’m not sure about Kwon Alexander at this point.

  24. Bucsfanman Says:

Good news. Now go pancake someone Ali!

  25. Pickgrin Says:

    Congrats Ali.

  26. JimmyJack Says:

Wow talk about having egg on my face. I was responding to somebody else on another page saying there is no way the glazers would let Jason light sign anybody at this time.

To me this move signafies 2 things.

    1) The Bucs love Marpet.

2)The Bucs love Licht. He staying our GM babies!!!! I’m v happy!!!

  27. Darin Says:

    Drome
Nobodys sure about Kwon right now. Not one defensive player outside of JPP looks decent. Pretty easy to figure out who the problem is. If i were kwon Id want smitty gone last year. He is gona cost these guys millions. I dount Kwon still shows up early for Smitty film study, or whatever those 2 were doing. They werent game planning I hear

  28. JimmyJack Says:

Kwon is the vocal leader of not only the worst defense in the league but historically one of the worst defenses to ever get onto a football field. Love ya Kwon but you need to get. we just had one of our all-time and defensive performances this week and you did absolutely nothing to stop it. Every time we have a bad game you do absolutely nothing.

If you wanna wear a Captain jersey if this league it Must be earned. Kwon just hasn’t earned it…….. I’d love to be proven wrong BTW!!!

    Goo Bucs!!

  29. ndog Says:

Not that I don’t like this move, but I would have locked up Donovan first. LT’s are harder to find the LG’s.

  30. TheDailyCoroner Says:

    I want the mauling, nasty Ali . . . Ali . . . Ali

  31. Aristotle Says:

    Worth It!!!!!

  32. donuts Says:

OK, great Ali is secured for next 5. Hope we keep him in the same OL spot for 5 years too. Whoever was responsible for his move to center (licht) should be canned. Licht most over rated GM ever but considering our ownership…it does not shock me.

  33. Wausa Says:

My opinion is the Bucs will sign Smith to an extension before season is over.
Sign Jamies to an extension after the season, if he plays the way I expect him to play.
    Also, after the season.
I am not sure what they will do with Kwon(I could see them possibly letting him walk).
    They will cut Will Gholsten
They will let Humphries go in free agency.
Conte will sign somewhere else in free agency unless the Bucs can bring him back for the minimum.
Jacquizz Rodgers will not be resigned and Brent Grimes will retire.
The Bucs will either sign Fitz or Ryan Griffen to a short term contract(2 to 3 years) and the other will sign elsewhere.
The Bucs will not be able to do much in free agency, but they will probably try to get another running back and possibly another defensive back, but they will not be big money guys.

  34. adam from ny Says:

he’s gotta lose the little hat and banjo…and start frothing at the mouth, and mauling people like he used to do…he is getting all soft and smiley…

ali please be a lean mean mauling machine…

  35. adam from ny Says:

  36. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I get moderated about 30% of the time, but I don’t believe I’m being targeted. I think it’s the filtering or some sort of lag delay.

My posts always show up eventually, so I do not fret over it.

I think sometimes Jo gets blamed for things that are not his doing at all.

That said…I do have a wishlist for the website if Joe is ever looking for suggestions:

    1) User Ability to filter out individual users comments. (probably impossible)
    2) So sort of comment rating ability…like Likes and Dislikes.

  37. Season Is Over Says:

^ this guy doesn’t want to get his feelings hurt. Good luck, Bonzai. I would try a knitting forum.

  38. JimmyJack Says:

Wausa. Nice assessment. I’d be on board with that.

  39. JimmyJack Says:

Bonzai worry about that junk in the offseason bro. Pressing matters are at hand. Primarily, the 1-4 Falcons who are scaring the hell out of me right now!!!!!

    goo Bucs!

  40. JimmyJack Says:

    Til*

  41. Defense Rules Says:

@Jmarkbuc … “Well let’s hope the new guys are good at communicating, and speak Smitty.” LMAO, although I’m not certain right now exactly what language that would be. I’m REALLY hoping that Allen makes it back for Atlanta & that Smitty turns the young Secondary loose (Grimes needs to fully heal up if he’s going to do us any good this season). Also REALLY hoping that this offense can put up points under Winston at the same rate they did under Fitz. Keep Matt Ryan & company off the field and we have a chance.

  42. adam from ny Says:

go trim a few bitch azz bonsai trees there dude…man up…the joes are the big bossmen here, and you are mere traffic flowing thru

  43. adam from ny Says:

ali and donovan were just spotted at the pressbox – just now…ali was teasing donovan hard, about his ghetto contract…but he did treat the entire bar to wings and brew – and then they’re off to the strip clubs…”party on the glazer cash” is what ali was chanting as he stood on the bar!

  44. D the Bucs fan Says:

Dude hasnt made not one pro bowl or all pro team. And gets beat consistently. Man. I hope he’s one of those guys that he wants to prove he’s worth that contract.

  45. Easy Says:

    Excellent signing.

  46. Miguel Grande Says:

i just don’t understand how they can reward an offensive lineman when they have the worst running offense in the league?

They should have offered him $6 million per year and that would be too high.

  47. Rod Munch Says:

Great news – Marpet would be an all-pro at this point if dummy Dirk didn’t move him to center and set back his development a year. As for those whining about the running game – it takes more than one offensive lineman to make it work and it takes a coach that does more than run it up the middle on first down against 11 in the box and then say “see, Doug Martin is terrible”, or “see, Barber is terrible”, or “see, Ronald Jones is terrible.” Also who cares about the running game other than dullards that think you punt from the opponent 36 in a shootout. It’s 2018, you use the passing game to setup the running game and if they stop that, then who cares, pass more.

  48. Sharthappens Says:

It appears as if the writing is on the wall for Mr. Jameis Winston. They have several other folks that they’re going to extend, which will result in no money for this poor losing his soul. Now that will make you grab your crotch and yell

That would be a fair point… if you knew what you were talking about.

Winston’s fifth-year option already picked up. His salary already factored into next year’s cap.

    Next?

  51. stvcl Says:

    Good move!

  52. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Best bucs news I heard in 2 weeks.

  53. Marques Says:

    He’s only 24.
    6’6 329
    2 years starting experience
    A Florida kid
He would be dirt cheap and worth a look. We have plenty of room under the cap to sign him.
He soured on the giants and New York City.
    He wanted out.
    A consensus first round grade.

  54. lambchop Says:

LeSean McCoy, David Johnson, and LeVeon Bell are all apparently being shopped around.

    Just sayin.

  55. MadMax Says:

I knew the kid had it in him when i was one of the first to start posting about him here (during the combine). Congrats Ali. Now make it count and continue to beast for us!
