Vea Getting In Work In Seclusion

September 3rd, 2018

“Pray for me, Beau.”

On the surface with the naked eye, Bucs first-round pick, defensive tackle Vita Vea, is in shorts and watching practice on the sidelines.

But behind locked doors, Vea is getting in work, Bucs coach Dirk Koetter assured the local pen and mic club today. However, it doesn’t appear that Vea is much closer to getting back on the field with a mysterious calf injury than he was the day in late July that he limped off the practice field.

And that was the last time Vea was on a football field of any sort wearing a helmet and pads, to Joe’s knowledge.

“He’s making progress but he’s just not ready to play on the field,” Koetter said today after practice.

By the look of things, it would be unwise to bank on Vea being on the field Sunday at New Orleans.

First, Vea hasn’t been on the practice field in over a month. And even if Vea could play against the Saints, just how effective could he be? He has yet to participate in a full practice with contact and pads. The last time Vea has played in a football game was against children on the roster of Penn State back in December.

With Mitch Unrein on injured reserve and who the hell knows when Vea will be available, the rotation plan on the defensive the Bucs planned to use since March is essentially tossed out the window.

And here comes Drew Brees.

Interestingly, Jenna Laine of ESPN had a Bucs source tell her at the time of Vea’s injury that he would only be out a couple of weeks and not miss any regular season games. This is yet another example of the Bucs being wildly off base with guesstimates on the recovery times of injuries or the severity of injuries in the first place.

There’s only one other team that is this bad with injury predictions. It’s the Mets. 10 day DL stings become 2 month injuries. I swear the training staff got their degree from a matchbook.

I don’t know why they’re so wrong. Either they do it on purpose or they are grossly incompetent. If they’re doing it on purpose they need to be aware it makes them look incompetent.

“Mysterious calf injury”…..I searched several medical journals for this…not there”

  3. reality-is-a-beotch Says:

man, it would be awesome if this team could get first round value out of a first-round pick just maybe once per half-century. bucs have not received good value for a first round pick, over the course of their career since the Sapp pick! Thank god he was picked before the choirboy loving hypocrite became the coach and cost this franchise at least one super bowl.

  4. Wausa Says:

    Cut him

  5. King C Says:

We only got stuck with Jason Licht because he came with washed-up Lovie Smith. So that one really bad decision to get Smith will cost us 5 years, assuming the Bucs are horrible again this year like all the pundits say

  6. Marc Says:

Work in seclusion? Man, I feel a lot better now, JOE. Thanks…

Or, humor me here, they’re lying to you? Hmmm.

    1. Is it possible that it’s an Achilles injury and not a calf strain? That’s a hell of a calf strain for a young athlete to not recover with every modern medical equipment known to man, I digress. Whatever happened to “walk it off”? I guess you can’t walk off an Achilles injury can you? But wtfdik?

    2. If he’s working indoors my only question would be is Vea able to walk across the parking lot to his vehicle without an umbrella and a case of Gatorade? Or does he overheat the second the doors at OBP swing open? Inquiring minds want to know.

If we’re lucky maybe Vea can play the Pittsburgh game and every away game after October. That way he won’t overheat. Oh but the weather in Tampa and Hawaii are the same so wtfdik, lmaolmaolmao. Oh Tampa, ya’ll are so funny.

All I know is that in this highly competitive environment we call the NFL DJ Moore, Calvin Ridley and Marcus Davenport are ready to start and contribute. And btw for whatever it’s worth the Bucs picked before any of their division rivals.

    TBBF

    LOL.

But there really is a whole lot of mystery. Never seen this type of radio silence about a rookie draft pick and a calf strain.

  9. Joe Says:

Is it possible that it’s an Achilles injury and not a calf strain?

Could mean anything. That is as specific as the Bucs are getting on Vea’s injury, which opens the door to a whole lot of speculating.

  10. JimmyJack Says:

It’s all a big conspiracy……Vita Vea has been inside Ole One Buc in a cage training like a monster and bending steel.

Meanwhile Spence has never felt better and the coaches told him to play poorly during preseason……..Why?……So Sean Payton won’t be prepared for them. Dirk is going to uncage Vita and let Spence go off on Drew Bress……..Then when they struggle to adjust we will throw McCoy outside and swing Spence out to LB. It will be a thing of beauty.

  11. webster Says:

Its obvious its more serious than a calf strain. I could be wrong, but i dont ever remember seein an athlete wear a boot for a calf strain.

  12. jmarkbuc Says:

    Bingo Webster

  13. BucEmUp Says:

Jimmy Jack you are high…..go.to bed

  14. JimmyJack Says:

I can’t understand what goes through anybody’s mind to criticize the Vea pick before he’s ever even been seen in a uniform.

Just like to know what your thoughts will be when you hear news that he will play? You won’t be excited?

  15. JimmyJack Says:

    BucEmUp……….Don’t squash my dreams.

  16. jmarkbuc Says:

    JimmyJack

Not sure we are criticizing Vea as much as Criticizing the pick

  17. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Derwin James is starting week 1 and roberto aguayo is not heck vh3 might not be starting, oh & dalvin cook is starting and pretty cool the saints signed mike gillisee

  18. ERIC Says:

reality-is-a-beotch WHAT ROUND SHOULD MIKE EVANS HAVE BEEN PICKED? JUST WONDERING……

  19. JimmyJack Says:

Gotcha jmark……There was definitely a lot of ways we could have went with that pick. I liked the Vea pick but I guess the other players are gonna have a head up on him til he heals.

  20. Eric Says:

Gotta see the man play before a knee jerk criticism of the pick.

  21. JimmyJack Says:

Dushty…….Obvisous I’ve been down on VHIII but when he played against the Lions I pumped the brakes a little bit. He was faster to the ball then I’ve ever seen him.

Not sure it will carry over and I probably wouldn’t bet on it but to see a DB turn a corner in their third year and become a playmaker happens all the time.

  22. stpetebucsfan Says:

A lot of this seems like PR stupidity…but while saying that I agree with the others who question the competence of the Bucs Medical/training staff.

But everytime a Buc gets injured we are fed a line of bull about how they’ll return and it’s almost always wrong and wrong as in much sooner than reality dictates!

Wouldn’t it be better to lower our expectations than continually tell tales to build us up. If they had said Vea has a serious injury and he’ll work as hard as possible to rehab but it could be months before returning we wouldn’t be having this conversation. I’m not sure why they use the other approach unless they realize there are literally some fans who are already yelling cut him…smh…and it makes Licht look bad.

This is not a reflection on Licht…injuries happen. Unrein IS a reflection on Licht.
Messing with a concussed player is just not wise…especially in today’s NFL where CTE is front and center. The only predictable thing about concussions is that once you have a history of them the future is pretty clear.

  23. Mike Says:

Ship Vea, Rojo, and a couple of third rounders to Pittsburgh for Leveon Bell

  24. BigMacAttack Says:

Dalvin Cook missed most of his rookie season. Not sure how one can judge Vea yet. The Saints have a strong O line. It’s always a top priority for Sean the Cheater. It will be a good test for our D line.

  25. Joe Says:

This is not a reflection on Licht…injuries happen. Unrein IS a reflection on Licht.

Once again, if you can predict injuries, please e-mail the Bucs immediately. They would likely hire you in a heartbeat and you’d likely be paid a seven-figure salary.

  26. SchwiftyBuc Says:

Vea will be back by no later than week 3.

    ________________________________________________

People with multiple concussions have a much higher propensity for additional (and worse) concussions so yes Unrein was a risk that they chose to roll the dice on.

Meanwhile Minkah Fitzpatrick is tearing it up down in Miami and will be playing and starting, just roaming around getting lining up at nickel, maybe deep safety, a blitz here, maybe an interception there just raising hell..MMMM i know a team that could’ve used more of that. Know who else will be starting? Derwin James. Vea better pan the F out, there is no getting around it

  28. Alanbucsfan Says:

JPP will likely be in DT rotation with McCoy and Allen and possibly Gholston .
Spence and Gholston need to step up…

  35. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Joe

There is ONE injury that is relatively predictable. People with histories of concussions have more concussions than those who have never had one.

Given the league’s rule changes and concerns about concussions this is not an injury you can skate around or hide.

    https://www.webmd.com/fitness-exercise/news/20031118/one-concussion-increases-risk-of-more#1

Athletes with a history of a concussion are at greater risks for future concussion than those without a history of head injuries, writes researcher Kevin M. Guskiewicz, PhD, with the Injury Prevention Research Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

This study is 15 years old but nothing has changed…I chose WebMD because of their credibility.

It’s just a fact…there is a “greater” chance after a concussion you will have another…not an absolute but certainly a HUGE red flag. As you have reported here on JBF, Unrein has a documented history of concussions. This isn’t rocket science.

  36. Defense Rules Says:

caeric … Just read that DE Will Clarke got the boot when the Bucs signed DE Carl Nassib after he was cut by the Browns. Licht probably knows a lot more than we do about Nassib at this point, but I REALLY liked how Will Clarke has been playing. With our DLine already beaten up, not so sure the timing of this move was optimal (new guy who doesn’t know our playbook and only 5 days til New Orleans?).

it is entirely possible he his having reoccurring concussion symptom without have suffered another concussion….does not look good…I’d move on ASAP…

  38. AlteredEgo Says:

DR…I watched and liked Will Clark

  39. Defense Rules Says:

StPete … I agree with you. Mitch had 2 significant concussions while with the Bears from what I read, so this is his 3rd. I really hope he just says ‘Enough is enough’ for the sake of himself & his family. At 31 yrs old, he’s only going to play maybe 1 more year, and in my mind it’s not worth the risk. I’m tending to think more & more that one of the reasons the Bucs have so many injuries is because we sign too many guys with a spotty injury history. For whatever reason, it always seems to come back to bite us in the proverbial butt.

  40. Defense Rules Says:

AlteredEgo … Just found this about Carl Nasser on a Browns site …

“A 2016 third-round pick, Nassib had a memorable appearance on HBO’s Hard Knocks this summer when he gave investment tips during a meeting to teammates while using some colorful language. He started 12 games and recorded three sacks for Cleveland last season.”

Memorable appearance on Hard Knocks this summer? Please please please say it isn’t so … Swaggy 2.0 anyone? So the Browns just got rid of 2 DLinemen who were stalwarts on their 0-16 team last year (Jamie Meder was the other one). Why am I so skeptical of this move?

  41. cmurda Says:

@caeric. That was a good pull by the Bucs and a dumb, dumb cut by Cleveland unless of course there is some unknown injury that the Browns are aware of. Looks like Will Clark is gone but when Winston and Beckwith come back, a couple more cuts will need to happen.

  42. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    We’ll see.

  43. joestang Says:

I wonder how Nassib feels he might have just went to a worse team than Browns. We will see this year.

  47. Mike Johnson Says:

Mysterious Calf Injury. Sounds like a new cheap movie title for the Sci-Fi channel.
And yes,,it appears Sapp was spot on about Vea. I’m disappointed. I’m also worried at Jones not being able to break tackles during the pre-season. The show must go on. The Saints will show no mercy. We need to be ready.

  48. webster Says:

    @ db55

Im sorry my brother but if your resume consist of crying for steven means, najee goode, the ric flair mlb as joe likes to call him in foster, adrian claiborne or the kicker who sucked out loud after leaving the bucs (i think it was ie cant remember his name) then you need not apply for a position in the bucs front office.

  49. Bucsfan951 Says:

Everybody sing it with me “your calf bone is connected to your, achillies bone” seems to be a lite more serious than a calf strain 😳

  50. adam from ny Says:

vea can’t take the heat…so they told him to stay out of the kitchen…he won’t be back to play until it cools off a little…until then he’s working out in seclusion with warren sapp

  51. BucNole Says:

Might be getting close to “cut bait time” with Unrein. . . if the kid cant get on the field we might as well look in another direction. . . and I say that more because of his age and concussion history.
This is the one season you dont want to Eff around on or this coaching staff and some FO personnel will be gone
