Ronald Jones Inactive

September 9th, 2018

Not playing today.

This is a stunner.

Joe doesn’t want to hear or read any crap that he is a hater for pointing out Ronald Jones had a horrific preseason. Predictably, the excuse-makers blamed the offensive line (roll eyes). Of course they did, what else is new?

To be fair, Bucs types told Joe that they too wanted to see what Jones could do behind the first string front line. Well, guess we will have to wait another week and see.

Jones is inactive for today’s game with the Saints. The season opener. When is the last time a healthy second-round draft pick was inactive to open the season?

It is way too early to label any rookie a bust. That’s irresponsible to do before he has even taken a snap in a real game. But right now, there are dark clouds hovering over Jones.

So guys drafted in the first, second and third round of this spring’s draft are inactive today. That would be Vita Vea (mysterious calf injury), Jones and Alex Cappa.

Not sure how this is a stunner…the stunner was we passed on Guice for this scrub.

  2. canadianbucsfan Says:

    Very strange

  3. Coburn Says:

Seemed predictable to me. Who of the other 3 backs was supposed to be inactive? Barber is your starter, Rodgers is your proven guy, Wilson is your return man. You don’t keep 4 backs active. Saw this a mile away. May change a few games in and we always hope no one gets injured but..

  4. D-Rome Says:

That Jason Licht fellow….he knows how to pick ’em….

  5. adam from ny Says:

wow they are basically conceding that he is a bust…i said it when they drafted him – he is like a wide receiver at the rb position…not able to take a hit…he might be a great kick returner tho

  6. BuccaneEric75 Says:

NJ, I agree with you, but the last time I checked, Guice isn’t playing either.

  7. gambelero Says:

It may be more of a vote of confidence for Wilson, who may be the absolute steal of the year. I applaud Koetter for letting the best guy play.

  8. Wade Says:

Sounds like he doesn’t know the playbook

  9. BuccaneEric75 Says:

I guess this means that all of the people who said the OL was THE problem with ROJO were wrong. Is was a problem, but not THE problem. I haven’t given up on him yet, though. He could be active next week and play well.

  10. NJBucsFan Says:

Yeah I know Eric but we are getting the same from Jones that Washington is getting from Guice

  11. Bob in Valrico Says:

I am waiting to see if they play Wilson on offense. also. Unfortunately ROJO
seemed a little lost. or overwhelmed.

  12. adam from ny Says:

other 2nd rounders will be playing heavily today for us…even starting! – even if by default…so the fact that mcdonald jones isn’t suiting up is a huge huge red flag…basically he was worthy of being cut then…but they gave him a pass because he’s a 2nd round pick…and more importantly to save face for mr. licht

  13. adam from ny Says:

his new name is McDonald Jones…because he should be serving big macs at the drive thru already

  14. Brian Says:

If the two other second round picks work out… I’ll care little if Jones ends up being a bust. Those two CB much more valuable.

  15. Dewey Selmon Says:

Pats 1st round pick Sony Michel is inactive also. bust. lol

  16. Danati74 Says:

Well Quizzie played for Dirk in Atlanta. Just like D. Martin played for Dirk in College. You pick Rojo in the 2nd round to be a healthy scratch. Sounds like we made the wrong pick, or picked him too early…something Licht knows how to do well. What is going on with busted 2nd round picks with the Bucs. I know it’s early, but I’m starting to smell ASJ Agyoyo Rojo funk. And it stinks. Please be wrong. Jeez. Healthy Scratch.

  17. Mort Says:

This is as expected. I told you several days ago to expect it. Check the post history.

  18. NPR SageBoy Says:

Two for two with top draft picks

  19. Bucamania Says:

Wilson is the KR and farther along than Jones right now. Still a bit surprised. Thought he’d get a few touches.

  20. Brion Says:

Alright I guess but who is he freeing up a roster spot for? Is it worth it? I mean if confidence is a factor this surely isn’t goig to help build it

  21. NPR SageBoy Says:

Cappa inactive too. Make that 3 for 3 with top picks

  22. Doctor Stroud Says:

A real “stunner” would have been if one of those inactive was Noah Spence, another second round pick and in his third season!

  23. Lucious Selmon Says:

Bust talk is silly. He’s probably just not ready yet. There’s been talk about possibly needing extra time to learn the plays and blocking technique. The good news is that unlike McPlaybook, Jones is a hard worker with a good attitude.

It could also be that the team wants to keep an extra corner or D lineman active, with several new faces, and coaches not sure what kind of players they have yet.

  24. NJBucsFan Says:

@Danati…Martin did not play for Koetter st Boise State. Koetter was in the NFL during Martin’s college years

  25. ChanEpic Says:

The silver lining: we didn’t have Mr. Jones on the team last year when we beat the Saints. The Bucs can do this!

  26. NJBucsFan Says:

Well I guess we can throw out the play where we only need 0.8 yards for a first down

  27. WVBucfan Says:

Dirk needs to go…. Like I don’t get how you draft a guy in the 2nd and don’t even allow to see how it goes when he’s behind the starters and you have actually game planned ways to get him the ball…. This tells me Dirk is calling the plays cause Monken could find ways Dirk is stuck in his ways

  28. jmarkbuc Says:

Picks not active ain’t good, but ..

Next Man Up. JL and DK & Co. have had a whole offseason. They either have what we’ve got ready to go, or they don’t. It will take a great coaching effort today to even remotely have a shot.

Are DK and Smitty “Active” today?

  29. Lucious Selmon Says:

    NJBucsFan

LOL. That’s some funny shiite there!

  30. ben Says:

yep ..go ahead and say how great bucs gm is. 1st and 2nd round pics not showing anything .

  31. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Beginning of the end of the crappy jason gump error cant wait for legit NFL gm to come and make good personnel moves not cute n kooky picks like a kicker & ksppa

  32. Issaic haggins Says:

Not a Stunner at all this is a weakness of Koetter !!! He overloads running backs with everything other that the most important and that’s use you natural ability and run the rock !!! Licht should be beside himself !!!!

  33. stpetebucsfan Says:

“It is way too early to label any rookie a bust.”

    Amen!

I think the majority here are happy to have Barber starting today. How did we feel about him as a rookie. He couldn’t block…he couldn’t catch…but he worked in the off season and improved and probably should have started last year.

    The major difference…expectations…Barber was a UDFA…ROJO a 2nd round pick.
If ROJO has Barber’s work ethic and determination eventually he’ll be a positive addition.

And so here is another obvious factor…The Saints traded up to take Marcus Davenport DE in the first round. He’s going to be tough to contain.

But the real game wrecker could easily be a DPOY candidate Cam Jordan.
Jordan had career highs in sacks (13), passes deflected (an incredible 11), and solo tackles (48). Who is going to block him? It won’t be any of our OL…it’ll take a combination of game planning and help from…RB? That wasn’t going to happen with ROJO! He needs work as a blocker.

  34. Rod Munch Says:

He’s inactive while the Bucs work on the trade to send him to Pitts in exchange for Bell. No big deal.

  35. Not there yet Says:

Third string back who doesn’t play special teams? Makes sense to me, he has to become the #2 before he’ll see action, welcome to the NFL rook. Hopefully this speeds up his desire to be what he was drafted to be

  36. Oxycondoms Says:

Good I’m starting barber on my fantasy team as my flex

  37. Wausa Says:

Most are so negative on here about this decision by the coaches.
I look at it differently and am happy the Bucs coaches play the best players based on production and not on contract or draft position.
I’m hoping Shaun Wilson has a great game and if Ronald Jones is deserving he will get his chance down the road.

  38. ElioT Says:

    Not a good sign…

Can’t trust his lack of production nor afford him in a pass protection situation with a suspect O-Line.

Defense MUST get pressure on Brees all day.

Barber MUST tote that pill 25+ for over 100 yards.

Fitz MUST not make any crucial mistakes.

    Go Bucs!!!!

  39. Tc Says:

No surprise to me. Jones has been terrible and cappa not much better. Hopefully, Vea pans out next year, I doubt he will do much this year. I am not trying to be Debbie downer but it is about production, not woulda, coulda, shoulda.

  40. GoBux Says:

No surprise. He could not read/pick up pass rushers or blitzes at USC. He can’t catch or run patterns worth a crap.l Jones is a bust. Deal with it.

  41. Buc believer Says:

Boy Jason Licht should be up for GM of the year… Ron Jones inactive Vea has one practice and is out till further notice… what a great evaluator of talent!

  42. LakeLand Says:

He’s the 3rd string RB and he don’t play on Special Teams. In other words, he’s useless for them against the Saints.

  43. BigMacAttack Says:

Wilson took his spot. The kid is good. Barber and Wilson equals Bash Brothers.

  44. LakeLand Says:

Their other rookie RB ( UDFA Shaun Wilson) plays on Special Teams. That’s why he’s active and Jones inactive.

  45. The Buc Realist Says:

LOL!!!! Man, the so-called fans are on edge!!!!!!!!! I have not seen them so ready to jump ship since 4 days BEFORE the draft and they said the draft was ruined because GM Licht did not trade for robert quinn!!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!!! The “real” fans know that this roster is a work in progress and the young secondary will have a very tough day, but it will pay-off in the second half of the season!!!!!!! Weather the storm sheep!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

#trust the coaches!!!!!!!!! Fix the “real” problem!!!!!! the Roster!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  46. Tc Says:

Not good when a guy that went undrafted (Shaun Wilson) is playing better than a 2nd round running back. A 2nd rounder should be decent/ good at least. They should of brought in proven free agent rb and dB (not depended on a 35 year old dB)

  47. donuts Says:

Licht is responsible for this cluster. OL is a mess in week 1. DL is filled with questions and missing its #1 pick and notable FA (Unrein). Coaches couldnt get Jones ready for first game with no injury issues during preseason.

I really am beginning to question Licht’s prowess as GM. Kaufman knows prowess.

They can still do this its up to the front 4 on each side.

    Go Bucs!

  48. Rod Munch Says:

As of the other day the Saints only two RBs in their roster 1 I don’t think they signed anyone. This tells you either team expects to be running the ball much – and if you’re the Saints and Ryan Smith is playing why would goh ever run the ball? If you’re the Bucs and you have the Conte-Smith stack out there you can expect to be down by 21 points in the first quarter so why would you run the ball?

  49. LakeLand Says:

    Well on a high note

Derwin James is in the starting lineup for the Chargers

    Representing Polk County

Or should I type (Poke County)

  50. LakeLand Says:

    Rod Munch

The Saints signed RB Mike Gillisee after the Pats cut him

They signed RB Johnathan Williams off their PS

  51. Rod Munch Says:

I knew Gillisee, he’s the #2, didn’t know the Williams move. Thanks.

  52. ATrain Says:

    Open Game thread

  53. Destinjohnny Says:

Where are all the big mouths who called me out for picking him?
Let’s see if I get the 20 people saying I was right and you were wrong
    Haha
Actually I hate that I was right

  54. LakeLand Says:

They cut OT Bushrod to make room for Williams

  55. Anonymous Says:

It doesn’t matter. Our defense is so bad I don’t think we can score enough points to win.

  56. John B Says:

To me It means we actually have depth that our 3 top picks do not HAVE to start Day 1 – that’s what made us the yucs btw….

In NO other professional sport are more than the very top picks expected to start

  57. Matthew Says:

This really is all they had to do to begin with. Just admit defeat and that he’s not ready for the nfl yet. That’s all they had to do. Instead they dragged him on and made his ego crumble and it was wrong . If he isn’t ready someone needs to let him know so he can focus on improving and making the roster . This inactive sign week 1 says just what we all clearly new week 1 of preseason. It shows us that the bucs are afraid of telling fans and people that the guy they just took sucks. . I get it but c’mon were gonna find out. Cause eithr he’s starting week 1 or he’s a bust lol.
