Record-Setting Fitzpatrick

September 24th, 2018

New NFL record-holder

Those three consecutive 400 yard games by Ryan Fitzpatrick, including tonight’s 411 yards on 30 completions, they set an NFL record.

Per the Bucs communications staff, that was a first in NFL history. Fitz wrapped up his messy night against the Steelers completing 30 of 50 passes with three interceptions and three touchdowns.

So now what?

Bucs fans saw the worst of Fitz and the best of him in three short games. The upside was gorgeous. Tonight’s first half was the meltdown many fans expected, but he followed it up with a strong second half.

Regardless, Fitz deserves a big tip of the hat for setting an NFL record. It’s hard to believe that achievement escaped so many greats of the game.

Joe would gladly trade a bunch of those yards for a running game and a W, but that’s a story for another day.

He’s our guy folks. This team loves him.

  2. Tampabucfan88 Says:

Guys he had a bad game and he did bring us back from the mess he made someone did this before making a mess bring us back name escapes me but anyway yea I give him the Bears game cause he did give us 2 wins

  3. CanadianBuc Says:

Enough of rojo being inactivated barber is a bell cow type back but lacks the speed and elsuvness to be an effective three down guy lets see what the kids got.

  4. Wausa Says:

    He was awful
Jamies should start next week or we are 2-2

  5. SteveK Says:

Int 1- Dotson failed to pick up the DE and ball was tipped

INT 2- Evans ran wrong route

Int 3- over the 4’11’’ Quiz Rodger’s arms: a bad throw.

    One bad throw.

Fitz was getting rocked out there. He came back and balled.

If we can protect, then we will Winn

Godwin’s fumble and the punt return called back cost us this game.

One of the Fitz turnovers was on him. The others were not a poor decision by Fitz, merely a result of poor protection or running the wrong route.

  6. Vincente Says:

Proud of how they battled after that very ugly start. Fitz your still our guy. This loss means nothing as far as taking you out of the number one spot.

  7. Jean Lafitte Says:

Our weak pass rush exposed our rookie secondary. Unfortunately the pick 6 made the difference. Fitz was in a battle this game.

  8. Chips28 Says:

Thanks for the time Fitz, Franchise comes back tomorrow. Thank God Jameis is back

  9. Rod Munch Says:

Glad that Dirk took the ball out of his hands and rested the game on the defense by punting, wouldn’t want to let your record setting QB have the chance to win the game, nope, it’s better to hand the ball back over the defense and expect them to get 2 stops in a row even though they hadn’t done so all night.

  10. Eezy Says:

This loser gets that bears defense we are 2-2. He buckles under pressure and can’t figure out the 3-4 defense he threw in tight coverages all night.

  11. Ndog Says:

Nice story and GREAT job Fitz but now our starter is back so Jameis should start on Sunday and away we go.

  12. SteveK Says:

All I ask from Joe and the Jameis supporters is that you please use the same QB lense when judging Jameis’ play.

If Jameis has 3 INTs and 2 are clearly not his fault, does he get labeled with “tonight’s first half meltdown”? Bc last I checked Fitz made one bad play and a lot of other players had worse.

Fitz is fine. Can we run the ball on Sunday? If not, can we just dress an offensive lineman as RB and use them to pass pro all day.

  13. Lamarcus Says:

It’s all we got is a pass game and always been since Koetter on board. No defense. No run game. Barely a kicking game.

  14. Biggun Says:

Over 1200 yards 11 TD’s 10 Quaters of lights out Play and 4 Interceptions…. Please???? FitzMagic still in the house. Let’s go kick some Bears A$$…

  15. Wausa Says:

The Bucs have the best receivers in the NFL
Fitz was terrible tonight and is the primary reason the Bucs lost.
Coaches should be let go if they don’t put the franchise QB back in next week.

  16. BucsBandit Says:

The game was lost on the 1st down play to “air it out” to Evans up the sideline when he was double covered. BAD PLAY CALLING.

They were a FG from forcing overtime or TD to win the game. They were on their own 20 with plenty of time (3+ minutes).

They had to go for short yardage plays and put a drive together. Throwing a deep pass on 1st down was just too risky.

  17. Red86 Says:

Fitz needs to sit. All the redzone possessions, he only looks to Evans once. Evans is our guy in the redzone. Very few if not no one can guard Evan in that situation. He didn’t even look that ways all the time he didn’t throw it to him. Fitz was rattled.

  18. Jaywill Says:

He should had 5 picks steelers drop a lot of picks today. Evans saved Fitz in 2nd half.

  19. Posey99 Says:

He just broke an NFL record for passing yards in a game and had 3 Td and you call him bad what a bunch of idiots

  20. NewTampaChris Says:

    Stats are for losers.

  21. Trench War Says:

Expect the same next week with Mack and Co. Fitz needs a rest. Let’s see if Famous can elude that Chicago blitzkrieg. Fitz’s legs looked a little heavy.

  22. Lamarcus Says:

BTW. Fitz was embarrassing first half. I thought him and Godwin was throwing the game. It was ridiculous. Conte is embarrassment and glad my wife walked out of the room for that play.

  23. 911bucs Says:

I made a comment out of frustration, but I tell ya the Oline really picked it up in the second half to give Fitz a chance, I commend them on that. Tough call next week at Chicago with the big situation. I’d lean towards Fitz due to three 400 plus yard games in a row.

  24. Buc68 Says:

We had the football with a chance to win… He had time to throw. On three straight throws and he hit Steelers. All could’ve or should’ve been picked. That was the money drive. You measure QBs when it’s all on the line and he pooped the bed.

  25. Wausa Says:

Actually the rookie corners played fairly well Brent Grimes was terrible

  26. Anonymous Says:

I like Fitz, but let’s be honest there was about three other throws that could have very easily been picked off. This was a bad game for him. I say let him and Winston practice this week and go with whoever looks better in practice. Teams are going to start really pressuring him after tonight’s game and I’m not sure our offensive line can hold up for 60 minutes against the bears. Fitz isn’t good under pressure jameis is better than average. Not sure who I would go with next week.

  27. Etzel Says:

Skipped passes and hesitation. That’s the Fitz we all know. Should’ve had a pick on the final drive.

  28. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

He 100% will be our starter next week. Terrible play calling mixed in with poor OLine play and Fitz occassionally hanging onto the ball too long, thats what did us in during the 1st half.

The fact our guys kept fighting and actually had a chance to win it, honestly we should’ve won, whether it was a dropped TD or a foot hitting a pad, or a dumbass holding play that cost us a punt return TD. Combine the fight and desire we played with during the 2nd half and actually airing it out in the 2nd half leaves me feeling good about our team

We had the toughest opening 3 game schedule ever and managed to be 2-1 and very easily could’ve been 3-0. Keep throwing it downfield is the main thing. Stay aggressive and we have a real shot at the playoffs, with either QB imo

  29. SchwiftyBuc Says:

Did he also set a record tonight for most passes nearly picked in one game? Also he threw away a win tonight. Looked awful on that 3 and out drive. But he probably played well enough to keep his job. Another performance like tonights against Chicargo and we’ll see Jameis back in the starting line-up vs the falcons.

  30. SteveK Says:

Godwn’s Fumble and the punt return to called back are bad. Godwin needs to hold onto the football I do appreciate his amazing effort.

We need a running game and more defensive pressure.

  31. unbelievable Says:

    Who gives a f@ck?

3 first half interceptions sealed the loss.

Oh and the fact that our defense is incapable of stopping a pass.

But hey at least we’re okay against the run….

Oh except when it’s 1st down with 3 minutes left and everyone plus their mom knows the Steelers are going to run.

Then we m give up a 40 yard run to ensure we have no chance at getting the ball back.

Way to go Bucs. You sucked at every level tonight.

  32. Patrick Says:

I guess y’all want to go on a losing streak and see Jameis publix crablegs Winston getting squashed by Mack on Sunday.

How about that guy who ran into a wall and screwed up a DeSean Jackson TD punt return? That penalty was the killer right there

  33. BushidoEvans Says:

Man yall are getting distracted from the real culprit. We were about to run them out of Ray Jay and Conte got RKO’d into the turf and gave Pittsburgh life! Lololol

  34. NewTampaChris Says:

Shaun Hill is a crappy kick returner. The Bucs can’t run the ball. Might want to dress your #2 draft pick.

  35. Dewey Selmon Says:

CONGRATS MIKE EVANS!!! ALL TIME LEADER TD RECEPTIONS

  36. Mord Says:

Of the picks, one was tipped, and in another, his arm was hit while he was throwing .. Frustrating, but reflects great defensive plays by the Steelers more than failure by Fitz.

    Breathe. The season ain’t over.

  37. BuccaneEric75 Says:

SteveK, you believe Mike Evans ran the wrong route because the football gods, I mean TV announcers said so!? Lol! I guess Evans was supposed to catch the ball over the Saftey. Evans was wide open on the route he ran. Maybe Fitz made a mistake?

  38. BuccaneEric75 Says:

    TampaChris, who is Shawn Hill?

  39. Dirty Bucs Says:

    “SteveK Says:

All of this. SteveK is 100% correct on all counts.

I’ll add that the two drives we settled for a FG inside the 5 didn’t help. A TD on either one and we win this game.

  40. Nole4JabooANDdBucs Says:

Amazing how concessions are made for Fitzmagic, because he is not Jameis. No worry Jameis’s agent will find him a new home!

While Tampa Bay elevate the guy who has nothing to lose and dump Jameis like they did Doug Williams! This deference will bite the Bucs in the butt!

  41. VA Tom Says:

What the heck are you talking about?–Joe

  42. Wausa Says:

Just because Fitz threw for a bunch of yards doesn’t erase the fact that he stunk

The Bucs are a pass first offense and he was over throwing and under throwing players as well as stepping up into the pass rush when he didn’t need to.

Again he played awful and the franchise QB should start against Chicago

  43. NewTampaChris Says:

Shaun Wilson. Whoever. His 15 minutes have expired.

  44. Rod Munch Says:

“Over 1200 yards 11 TD’s 10 Quaters of lights out Play and 4 Interceptions…. Please???? FitzMagic still in the house. Let’s go kick some Bears A$$…”

…and yet Dirk took the ball out of his hands to punt it when the game was on the line.

Tells you everything about how much confidence Dirk has in Fitz.

Actually it tells you that Dirk is a coward since if he had Tom Brady and this defense he still would have punted the ball because that’s what cowards do.

  45. Sunny Says:

Dirk punting in first qt instead of FG cost us the game

  46. NewTampaChris Says:

I’m fine with Fitz. I’ll take the bad with the good. But the defense is horrific.

  47. Biggun Says:

^^^^^^^ Rod Munch^^^^^^^^ exactly why punt????

  48. Mord Says:

Not sure what to make of the Le’veon Bell-to-Bucs trade rumors after another game with poor run results, but … it’s intriguing

  49. NewTampaChris Says:

@Rod The better question is — How is it possible in this league to throw three straight incompletions?

  50. Pryda...sec 147 Says:

Many fans were callin for Jameis all game nice ride Fitz thanks for stealing 2 games

  51. Trench War Says:

I swear when I read this

“Just because Fitz threw for a bunch of yards doesn’t erase the fact that he stunk. The Bucs are a pass first offense and he was over throwing and under throwing players as well as stepping up into the pass rush when he didn’t need to.”
    ______________
I thought you could be speaking about Jameis as well.

  52. BuccaneEric75 Says:

I’m so pissed right now. Fitzpatrick didn’t play well, but the OL and WRs, particularly Godwin, didn’t help much. The play calling in the red zone was horrible. Evans had the outside many times and I was yelling at the TV for Fitzpatrick to throw it up to him, but he never even looked his way. You have the best 50/50 ball player in the league and you don’t throw the fade even once? Unbelievable

  53. Dirty Bucs Says:

Tampa needs to figure out the run game, and fast. I think part of it is O-Line play, but I also feel we don’t have the same level of starting RB as the top half of the teams in the league do. It’s frustrating. And I don’t think ROJO is the answer right now. He’s too small, and we need a bigger back that has all the tools.

  54. Nole4JabooANDdBucs Says:

Let a maturer JW go to the Jags or the Giants…amazing Fitz is benefiting for the improved installments, changes and play making Jameis had to play during the garbage days…

    GO BUCS!

  55. Tampabucfan88 Says:

Wtf are u praising fitz And bashing the defense yesss the defense gave up three td in the first half (one was on a short field) butasi said before the were a lot of plays fitz threw the damn ball away we be tied head to ot also the defense did shut out pit in the second half soooo @stevek you say treat him like we treat Jamies we are doing it all you Mother f}#% that wanna see him traded were quite and now u want us to treat him sighhhhhhhhhh good job fitz congratulations on ur 400 yard day thank you for ur three td that were in the third & 4th qt but mostly thank you for the two int that wasn’t ur fault and the one that was also it’s the defense fault u got sack for ten yards

  56. Oneilbucs Says:

Good try fiz but I’m not surprised at all cuz that’s who he is . And that was my hold point. Why not let Winston play the second half next week . So I will say it was a good run but I was trying to y’all that go bucs……

  57. NewTampaChris Says:

    Huge opportunity lost tonight.

  58. Pruritus Ani Says:

27 points and 400 yards passing should win a football game no matter who is the QB..

Hard to throw 50 times w/o an INT.

    Running game + Defense.

  59. German Buc Says:

BREAKING NEWS: Bad O-Line play leads to QB struggles like holding on to the ball to long, getting hit, inaccurate throws, throwing INTs – no matter if #3 or #14 is playing.

And rallying from behind seems to be more difficult than managing a lead. One question, dear haters: Wasn’t CG12’s TD a backfoot throw while getting hit? A throw – as you claimed – never to be thrown?

  60. Gene Deckerhoff is my hero Says:

Throw Fitz to the wolves in chicago. Bucs 2-2 and Jameis comes back healthy with practice reps to get the real season under way in week 6.

  61. Gene Deckerhoff is my hero Says:

Stats are for losers is a great quote.

  62. adam from ny Says:

the bright monday night lights seemed to throw the bucs off a bit in the first half…then they settled down and got back to their game a bit more in the 2nd half…to little to late though…

the steelers played much tougher in the first half…bucs looked soft compared to pittsburgh…

franchise qb’s don’t go 3 and out with 3 minutes to go in the 4th quarter…they march down the f’in field…

the o-line had a tough time tonight and couldn’t sustain a clean pocket for fitzie to get magical – especially in that first half…

it was crazy that pitt went into half time with 30 on the board…hard to overcome that ever…

if we played well we could have won this game…coulda, woulda, shoulda…

oh well…on to next sunday against bitch blowfitzky

  63. Bird Says:

    Only shame.

You guys no better. I was at the game.

  64. horse liver Says:

That pick six sure was a thing of beauty.

  65. Bird Says:

It’s funny. You guys think James is Aaron

  66. D1 Says:

JW has to get the start v the bears. He’s the best option and since fitz played like (oneilbucs, “like fitz”) JW, there’s nothing really separating them except JW has an advantage over fitz via game planning.

With no big difference between the two go with the franchise young guy. JW offers more options in game planning this week those options didn’t exist tonight and limited the options on the o side of the ball.

Bad playcalling is something that has been claimed repeatedly in support JW . Tonights playcalling shouldn’t be dismissed tonight. Especially, by the same people who had problems with them last year.

It is obvious who should start. JW is the #1 pick and the franchise. Fitz is a 7th round draft pick, career back up , who had 7 former teams and no playoffs. Comparing resumes it’s easy to see who has the pedigree and who doesn’t. Who’s old and who is a youngster.

What is confusing Is, the individual numbers stats don’t reflect the obviously superior franchise qb from a 7th round long shot that is lucky to be in league in the first place. Nobody’s acknowledged that in the argument for who should start. It’s fine to say JW is only 24, He is the best franchise qb ever, if he leaves he wins the super bowl. But it’s not sound reasoning and it’s not how you make a 100million decision. If the franchise makes a bad decision on JW it’s going to cost them in excess of 100 million dollars. They better have answers to questions that fans don’t or won’t ask .

  67. Pewter4life Says:

Just start Fitz against Chicago, if he has a good game then great, stick with him. If he has another bad game, then Jameis will have a total of 3 weeks to prepare, all this week, all of the week following the Bears game, plus the bye week. Besides, it wouldn’t be fair to Jameis to come back on a short week, and expect him to play that well. Because if he doesn’t play well, the excuse will be that he didn’t have enough time. I would want him to be as prepared as possible. That being said, if Fitz has a good game, Jameis stays sidelined.

  68. 1sparkybuc Says:

Fitz caught the league by surprise. The surprise is over. He’s not going to surprise anyone again. 2-1 is better than most expected. Start him against the Bears with Jameis as his backup. Start Jameis the rest of the year. He is the key. We have no ground attack and our defense is a work in progress. We need to know what Jameis can do behind this line with these weapons. I trust Jameis to continue to improve.

  69. reasonableOne Says:

From above “D1” above: “He is the best franchise qb ever, if he leaves he wins the super bowl.” Really??? Jameis Winston is the best franchise QB ever? Better than 6th round draft pick Tom Brady, better than Joe Montana, better than Peyton Manning, Russell Wilson, Cam Newton, Dan Marino, Brett Favre, John Elway, Steve Young, Warren Moon,…???

Someone needs to gain a little perspective. With a good couple of years Jameis may enter the conversation as one of the top 100 QB’s of all time, #1 is a long long long way off. There are no guarantees to win the Super Bowl. The greatest passer on that list above, Dan Marino, never won a Super Bowl. Warren Moon, who won 5 Grey cups never won a Super Bowl.
