One Surprise On Cutdown Day

September 2nd, 2018

Former Bucs safety.

There is usually one surprise on Cutdown Day, the day the Bucs had to whittle the roster down to 53.

And there could be more to come. Remember, the Bucs currently do not have a long-snapper. The Bucs and the rest of the NFL are allowed to go shopping today at 1 p.m.

Yesterday, the big surprise was safety Keith Tandy. Joe never had any inkling Tandy was on thin ice. Tandy is one of those guys Bucs coach Dirk Koetter likes to call “glue guys,” They may not be stars but they are the very backbone fabric of a team.

Tandy is a very smart man and a tireless worker. A consummate professional. If there was a player on the roster who may have outworked America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, it was Tandy.

Joe has heard more than once from within the walls of One Buc Palace that Tandy wants to get into coaching when his career was finished.

Tandy never really was that good of a safety. He couldn’t hang onto a starting job and aside from one five-game stretch in 2016, when it appeared Tandy broke through, his game was just meh.

Joe will never forget how Tandy got clowned by Tavon Austin for a touchdown in a close loss to the Rams in 2016 at the Den of Depression. That was ugly.

Joe suspects rookie Jordan Whitehead and second-year starter Justin Evans helped push Tandy out the door with their play.

Tandy is a solid but unspectacular player.

When two guys are drafted at your position in two years, it’s an indication that management wants to upgrade.

I wish Tandy the best, but the Bucs S position is now far more athletic and fast than it used to be.

  2. Marc Says:

Was he that much worse than Conte? I don’t think so.

  3. The Buc Realist Says:

Not a super surprise!!! His name was on an injury report once or twice!!!!!!! And the Bucs have been trying to upgrade the safety position for years!!!!!!! And everyone can say what they want about C Conte, But the fact is he is playing on his second one year deal!!!!!! That is very telling!!!!!!!!!

#trust the coaches!!!!!! Fix the “real” problem!!!!!! The Roster!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!

CONTE IS NOT A F#CKING GLUE GUY. Works hard at trying to find Cheerleaders/Stripers at Mons in the offseason to get married to.

  5. Getaclue Says:

He will be in New England, Schiano man

  6. TheBucsAnthem Says:

They better resign the Tandy Man

And get Bo Bo Wilson. …that guy is a playmaker

And get rid of sorry ass Conte -ta-pation

  7. SchwiftyBuc Says:

lol that 5 game stretch and a few meaningless picks over 7 years with the Bucs really served to warp peoples perspective of Keith Tandy. By and large he was a below average safety with a couple flashes in the pan that quickly fizzled out.

It will never cease to entertain me how Bucs fans can fall in love with meh back-up players like Tandy and nobodies like Riley Bullough, and then turn around and hate on guys like Gerald or Jameis.

  8. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Keith Tandy has had years to prove himself. People forget that he was cut in the past because he disappeared during the regular season and then made a couple good plays as the seasons ended. Because fans always remember final impressions, they think he is good. He isn’t.

Meanwhile, people think Conte is bad because he comes in late on plays. But his position in the backside of the defense. He comes in late because he is the last line of defense in the scheme.

If you look at most plays that fans get mad about, from start to finish, another teammate almost always blew covering his man. Conte arrives in time to stop a touchdown.

Game three, VHIII lost his man along the right sideline. Player caught the ball and had a clear path to a TD. Then Conte hit him and stopped him. They had to settle for a FG.

But fans were saying Conte blew the coverage on that play…never mind that he came from mid-field to make the stop.

Conte gets blamed a lot by the ignorant masses. But look at the plays again and you will learn he is actually our best Safety.

THAT is why he stays on the team.

  9. Abucs75 Says:

Buccaneer Bonzai: I’ve been saying this for a long time. Conte is much better than people credit him for. I’ve seen him on touchdown saving tackles and many pass breakups. People just watch football from an emotional standup and never ask what could of happened assignment wise that could have led to a busted play. Its easy for them to just say Conte sucks all the time. People don’t think logically about certain players.

  10. alanbucs Says:

Buccaneer Bonzai: I have been saying this for a long time. Conte has made some key plays for us. I don’t understand where all the hate comes from.

  11. adam from ny Says:

the saints will snatch up tandy asap…milk him for info because he thinks like a coach

  12. Alanbucsfan Says:

Licht spent 3 draft picks on the secondary because it sucked…
Licht signed 3 free agent D linemen and spent a no 1 pick on DL because DL sucked
That’s the reality of the defense from last year

  13. teacherman777 Says:

I am a Chris Conte supporter too!

I am a huge fan of his!

The guy is in the NFL! As a white boy safety!!

White boys are still the underdogs when it comes to American athletics. Especially basketball and football.

Just to be on an NFL roster is a HUGE accomplishment!!

Chris Conte needs to love himself and realize how unique he is!!

Enjoy yourself Chris!! Enjoy the game and take your rage out on the other team like Shaqueem Griffin.

Anybody else notice Shaq Griffin playing like Beast Mode???

I told you we should have drafted him the 4th round!

    Damn!

    Shaq Griffin is KILLING PEOPLE!

  14. SchwiftyBuc Says:

With you on that for sure teacherman77 I wanted Shaq badly with that 4th round pick.

  15. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

NFL waiver claims begin at noon. Anyone with less than 4 accrued yrs service are subject to waivers.

  16. teacherman777 Says:

And all my respect to Keith Tandy!

    A true Schiano man.

I hope he signs on somewhere for a couple more years!

He is still a great special teamer!

    Iguegeku is the next tandy.

    Except with 4.4 speed.

Just watch. Igwegkewu will be on the practice squad.

He is not very fluid, but he is a hard hitter with nice straight line speed.

He just needs to get quicker.

But keep your eyes out for Igewkeku. He will contribute next year.

  17. SchwiftyBuc Says:

I was also adamant that we didnt really need to draft a saftey because we could’ve just signed Eric Reid or Tre Boston to play Strong safety. Sadly Boston has been signed by the Cardinals and Eric Reid remains unsigned.

We are all more ignorant after reading it.

  20. Easy Says:

There is a reason he was passed over as a starter his entire career. Wish him all the luck in the world though. Seems like a good guy

  21. Bucsfanman Says:

Safety play will be improved with improved D-line play. Be glad Conte is at least keeping fools from scoring on those plays.
Tandy is a bit of a surprise but, as Bonzai stated, he’s had ample time to beat out others on this roster and hasn’t. We probably could’ve used Tandy for depth, IMO.
    I wish him well.
Sorry Tandyman! Hopefully your boy lands on his feet somewhere.

    Go Bucs!
    Go HOKIES!

Agreed with all of this, especially the fact that as it stands right now he is the team’s best safety.

The Bucs have 21 players on this year’s final 53 that were not on the team last year. Guess who is *still* on this team? Chris Conte. Think about that, 40% of this roster is full of new guys. No one can convince me that over the past three years the Bucs haven’t been able to find a better safety to replace him.

Every FA that Jason Licht has brought in, that under performed, is gone. Conte still remains. If he was truly as bad as some of the slack-jawed mouth breathers suggest he would have been gone years ago.

I don’t have a problem with that O Envious One.

  24. Diesel Says:

Bonzai that was not on Vernon. Carlton didn’t recognize the check into zone coverage. You’d know this if you actually watched the game or listened to HCDK’s day after press conference. SOE apparently doesn’t know his mouth from his a$$ apparently. Conte is a stand up individual with an amazing wife who happens to be a former Buccaneer cheerleader .

    ‘SOEbuc Says:

Kind of an odd statement considering that there probably isn’t a single red-blooded heterosexual male on the planet that wouldn’t be doing the same. Just sayin’!

  26. mark2001 Says:

As you said Joe… the kind of guy that would likely make a great position coach in a couple of years.

  27. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Diesel Says
“Bonzai that was not on Vernon. Carlton didn’t recognize the check into zone coverage.”

We are probably talking about different plays, so I won’t argue the point. The one I am talking about started off with VHIII on the man, and he got juked and left behind.

  28. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

BTW, where was Tandy before he returned to the team?

On the street, wasn’t he? So 31 other teams did not want him?

I think he will probably get signed somewhere because the media is mentioning him as the most surprising cut. Personally, I think there are others that are more surprising…mostly due to injury.

  29. rrsrq Says:

I don’t think Conte is a bad player, but I think if he is your starter then your back line of defense may have some issues and really what I am saying there are better safeties in the league, including one nobody will sign, Eric Reid. Did Tre Boston sign with anyone

  30. RODNEY J ALLEN Says:

I liked tandy but conte is better n we have younger better safeties that will be our starters by next year. Then u contehaters will have to find someone else to complain about smdh

  31. Diesel Says:

Same play Bonzai. He wasn’t juked, they were in zone. VH had the flat out of the nickel position and CD had deep
