Homecoming

September 26th, 2018

The return of America. (video)

It was Labor Day Weekend when America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, last stepped foot into One Buc Palace as he did early Tuesday morning. His three-game suspension now behind him.

And for the first time that Joe has seen from the Bucs head coach, Dirk Koetter actually broke into a smile discussing Jameis being back in the building.

In his weekly in-season sitdown with Dan Lucas of WFLA-TV Channel 8, Koetter seemed to express a bit of emotion when recalling seeing Jameis for the first time in weeks.

“It was awesome to see Jameis in the building,” Koetter said with a smile. “He had a smile on his face. He looked good. I am sure he was working hard. He told me he was ready to go.”

And almost like a preemptive strike, Koetter began to discuss his quarterback situation Sunday in Chicago before Lucas had a chance to ask. With a twinkle in his eye, Koetter said he would keep the news of who will be starting Sunday in Chicago in-house “for competitive reasons.”

You can see the full interview below which includes Koetter raving about the play of the rookie cornerbacks Monday night.

Welcome back Famous Jameis! There are the things important in life. 1.God 2. Family/Friends 3. Jameis Winston!!! Fire the cannons! Jameis isssss back!!! Wooo hoo!

  2. Ray Rice Says:

Man just get the “W” period!

  3. Dooshlarue Says:

    Dan Lucas is terrible.
Learn how to ask a concise question man!

  4. kelley rose Says:

i think fitz starts and plays the first half and unless he is just lighting it up and were up by a bunch JW comes in in the second half gives the team a boost and catches the bears off guard and give us a better chance to win.

  5. Buc believer Says:

The old saying a broken clock is right twice a day well we have had our twice thank you and you have done your job and been paid handsomely for it and had fun. Now it’s time to sit back and let the REAL QB of this team play! WE BELIEVE IN YOU JAMEIS!!!!

  6. Resurrection of Fitz Says:

    Ryan Griffin will start!

  7. Walter Seidel Says:

……Until we learn of another off the field issue. These things seem to require 2 years of percolation. PLEASE, Dirk, stick with the man that’s guided our team to a completely unexpected 2-1 !!! And TWO TIME player of the week!!! And THREE TIME 400 yards in the air!!!! Can’t argue with numbers.

  8. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Apparently, Jameis even had 11 on 11s to simulate games.

    Two-a-days four times a week.

Clearly, he was focused. All of that effort was put into preparing for his return.

Also, I was thinking about something this morning. Jameis was stuck watching the game on tv…so for the first time, he experienced the range of emotions Bucs fans feel when the team goes down and has to dig out of a hole.

It’s a perspective that he lacked before. No one likes a loss, but we learn from adversity. Losing this game might have some positives.

    Either way…2-1 baby!

Not 0-3 like the NATIONAL MEDIA predicted!

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Thank goodness the QB controversy ends Sunday…..or will it?

  10. Pickgrin Says:

Fitz served his purpose well. Great Job. 2-1 heading into Chi town is about as good as anyone could have expected prior to the season.

Winston is the more talented QB and there’s no question about that.

Jameis gives this team the best chance to win on any given Sunday – therefore – starting him this week in Chicago is what’s best for the Buccaneers.

Final thought – Fitz just started looking at the Bears tape yesterday. Winston has been lazer focused on studying the Bears and the best ways to beat them for the last 3 weeks…

  11. El_Buc941 Says:

Joe you were right,Jenna Lane reported Jameis flew in QB coach from California and 25 other guys including Louis Murphy and practiced 7 on 7s and 11 on 11s 2 hours a day and ran game day simulations on Saturdays. Yea it doesn’t sound to me like Jameis has any rust to shake off if called upon Sunday

  12. Curry-Winston Says:

If Winston doesnt start because of RYAN FITZPATRICK against Chicago….Then my fellow Buc fans u just be pretty much set ur own franchise back …I dont see how Jamei stays idc what the excuse is…we all kno he’s clearly better…just never mind how good he’s been since his shoulder injury or when everybody was crying about how terrible Fitz was compared 2 Jameis this preseason….miss me with the 3 week absence bs…hope fitz starts, lights it up and let Koetter listen 2 the media’s firestorm about the Journeyman…lol

  13. The Buc Realist Says:

Best outcome for Sunday is that the Bucs blowout da bears and JW3 comes in for the 4th quarter for mop up duty!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. Defense Rules Says:

@Pickgrin … “Winston is the more talented QB and there’s no question about that.”

We might have a little difference of opinion here Pickgrin. IMO, the proof is in the pudding as the old saying goes. And the pudding in this case is WINS & LOSSES. The most talented QB IMO isn’t the one who can throw it the farthest or the fastest; it’s the QB who’s the most effective FIELD GENERAL, who can best employ the ‘weapons’ at his command AND who can WIN with those weapons. Fitz showed us through 3 games against some pretty good teams that he can do that, and I applaud him for it. THREE games OVER 400 yards? Unprecedented in Bucsville. ZERO fumbles, despite being brutally dropped multiple times by the Steelers. Granted, FOUR INTs in 3 games, but review the film & really only 1 of those was on him (his receivers screwed the pooch on 3 of them). Despite our defense giving up 30 PPG, Fitz kept us in every game, and won 2-out-of-3 of them.

Could Jameis have done BETTER to start the season? We’ll never know, although Joe will most likely insist that’s the case, and then blame all losses on the defense as usual. This last game should’ve been a real eye-opener for Bucs fans. Relentless pressure by the Steelers’ DLine & LBs exposed our OLine weaknesses IMO, and our running game was close to irrelevant yet again. Despite that … and turnovers … Fitz came very close to bringing us back against a much more physical Steelers’ TEAM. Personally think that Fitz will start against the Chicago (an even more physical team) because of the short week. It’ll be interesting to see what happens after that. It’ll also be interesting to see how so many fickle fans respond IF Jameis starts and we start losing (starting with Chicago, 5 of our next 7 games are away).

  15. Bucsfanman Says:

Welcome back Jameis! Now, get to work. There’s lots to be done!

  16. Clarence Says:

The numbers tell us Fitz’s success in the sundown of his career won’t be lasting. Bucs need to continue to build around the future of the franchise. That’s Winston. Fitz, you did an amazing job and you’re a great backup QB. now grab your clipboard and a big ol box of popcorn.

  17. ben Says:

Winston is back and why care? Fitz record is better and wins do count!!

  18. Miguel Grande Says:

Thank God for Deon Sander’s Primetime Online Cornerback University because everyone knows the Buc coaches are not capable of teaching young cornerbacks how to play professional football.

I think I read that somewhere.

  19. LargoBuc Says:

Jameis has had some success against the Bears in the past. Just saying.

  20. BrianBucs Says:

Can’t wait for the day that America’s Crotchgrabber And Liar has his first early morning walk into his next team’s facility

  21. Kobe Faker Says:

“Fitz is starting vs Chicago. JW getting snaps this week and the bye next week. JW will be 100% ready by then.

Fitz will only replaced if he falters and clearly needs to be replaced by JW”

    Kobe “1BucMole” Faker

  22. ATrain Says:

So I have a Question Joe and Jamies Fans

If he comes in and loses then what

If Jamies comes back and throws Int and fumbles the ball
Can’t hit the long pass (because that is what is helping us)

Then what do we make excuses
Oh he is rusty. He needs time

    How long ??

Till we pay him 100 million

Just a question that No Fan Or Joe will answer
When do we cut are losses with him

Obviously if he comes in and is as good as y’all think there is no question

But will it take for y’all to call him out if it goes the other Way

    JOE? Jamies Fans?

  23. Godeep66 Says:

It’s funny to see all the JW snowflakes either change their user name OR hide under their bed. Mad props for Bonzai and Pickgrin for not changing your user name. Although, you should probably stop posting positive things about JW, Canada’s Pro Bowl to be QB. It makes you appear as dumb as the person you are promoting.

  24. Godeep66 Says:

    @walter and Brianbucs: much respect!!!!

  25. bucsince79 Says:

This is a good problem to have.. Kudos to the Glazers for staying with Dirk K.!!
I really like him as our head coach… GO BUCS 3-1 after sunday triple up on Mack!!

  26. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

This is team is not very good overall, the offense is shining but that pathetic semblance of a defense will have this team maybe 8-8 probably 7-9 at best, point being might as well play jameis, maybe koetter gets another year maybe not, licht doesnt deserve any more time, it is very apparent that he is on way over his head and thinks his crafty vision of building a franchise works, it doesn’t this defense and lack of running game would never work in the playoffs or when games become real like in December against the division rivals, that all are built to win…look what they all have a solid defense and solid run game

  27. DB55 Says:

Did Carlton Davis shut down AB? Yes!

  28. JimmyT Says:

    ATrain,
So u blow off the pick six & 2 other picks for FITZ. If Jameis had a game like that U JAMEIS haters would be screaming from the rafters. FITZ threw 3 PICKS & WE LOST!!!! What’s the difference? Are U BLIND? Then KOETTER Makes an excuse for each pick that FITZ threw blaming the PROTECTION. I certainly don’t remember when Jameis had a pick or a fumble KOETTER covering for him! When JAMEIS has Turnovers last year he was RUNNING FOR HIS FREAKING LIFE so I GET IT, u HATE Jameis but please SPARE ME THE STATS!

  29. Bucsfanman Says:

ATrain- IF, and I mean IF he fails, the Jameis fans will most likely roll out the excuses and forget about the last three years. They’ll point to being 4th in passing 2017 and lament the defensive collapses in between while never assigning responsibility to a turnover-prone, above-average QB.
That’s what we have learned about supposed Buc fans during this self-inflicted suspension. We DON’T KNOW how Jameis will play upon his return. We only speculate because Fitz is a backup.
When Jameis gets his opportunity he needs to produce. The Bucs owe him nothing, fans owe him nothing. He CAN be replaced. I’ll repeat it: He CAN be replaced.

  30. Clarence Says:

Might as well say it; Fitzpatrick gets cut slack that Winston doesn’t, and it’s 100% because he’s a white Harvard grad.

  31. tickrdr Says:

“Jameis is clearly the more talented QB” ?????
    ————————————————————————————
Did you know that in the three years since Winston was drafted (not even counting this year’s games), that there is a group of games that the lowly Bucs (of Buccaneer Cove fame) went 15-4. That’s right 15 wins vs. only 4 losses.
No, it wasn’t when Jameis passed for more than 300 yards, because the Bucs were 4-7 in those games.
No, it wasn’t when Jameis passed for 3 or more TDs, because the Bucs were only 4-4 in those games.
It wasn’t even when Jameis passed for LESS than 230 yards a game, though they were 9-4 in those games!
No, it was when they WON THE TURNOVER BATTLE!
Five game winning streak in 2016? Yep, they won the turnover battle in every game, and the “trainwreck” defense had 14 takeaways during that five game streak.
Oh, and when Fitzpatrick started those three games last year, the Bucs won the turnover battle every game, and went 2-1 in the process.
Everyone says that JW3 played his best ball during the last five games last season, but in those last five games the Bucs gave up 13 turnovers, with JW3 losing 5 of 7 fumbles, and he also threw 5 INTs, while the Bucs went 1-4.
BTW, even though the Bucs won that last game vs. NO, that was the only game that the Bucs were able to win when they had three or more turnovers in a game. That’s right, the Bucs were 1-12 in games with three or more turnovers.

So, let’s update the data to include this year. First game vs. NO, the Bucs won the TO battle, 0 – 2. In the game vs. Philly, tied at 2-2. Everyone knows the results vs Pitts, 4 TOs vs. only 1. So now, the Bucs are 1-13 W vs. L when they have 3 or more TOs in a game, despite FITZ throwing for more than 400 yards, and 3 TDs.

For the last three years plus three games:
    Win the TO battle: 16-4
    Tie the TO battle: 2-6
    Lose the TO battle: 4-19
    More than 3 TOs: 1-13

BTW: Fitz in six games: Won the TO battle in 4
Tied the TO battle in 1. Lost the TO battle in 1. Record 4 Wins vs. 2 Losses.

    ATain & goddeep66

I’m not baseing fitz prefomace on picks I’m basing on his individual throws heck koetter said it in the press on 3rd series he wished fitz would have thrown it out of bonds instead of taking that sack he left points on the field also u can argue that those picks he threw were not his falt but he had about two picks dropped in the 4th and another three beat picks of mike or Godwin didn’t catch the ball watch the game again and goddeep66 please ur a stupid piece of s$&@ troll who need to go root for another team cause ur completely stupid

  33. Miguel Grande Says:

Jameis Winston will be in the NFL’s Hall of Fame one day.

The only question is, will he be wearing a Buc uniform.

Why would I change my name? Proud to be a Buc fan.

I think Fitz is just great, much respect, but he will never be enshrined in Canton.

  34. Bucsfanman Says:

The race card?! Really Clarence?! It’s got NOTHING to do with, I don’t know, WINNING?!
Please tell me how skin color has anything to do with it?
Just as a reminder numbnuts, the 3 game suspension was Jameis’ fault. Fitz is taking advantage of his opportunity. Oh, and it’s a TEAM game. It ain’t about ONE player!
How did we go from so much positivity to ignorance in one game?!

  35. Clarence Says:

Bucsfanman, If Winston is only above average and can be replaced so easy, how come this franchise been trotting out hot garbage at the QB position for the last 15 years?

Simms? McCown? McCown’s Brother? Freeman? 40yo Jeff Garcia struggling to throw for 200yds a game?

I reckon there’s 32 nfl GMs who’d disagree with you about how easy it is to find an ‘above-average’ qb

  36. Clarence Says:

Bucsfanman, there’s no need for name-calling.

  37. tickrdr Says:

    BTW#2:
JW3 and “weapons for Winston” last year = ~ 19ppg.
    Fitz this year = 48+27+27 = 102 points = 34 ppg average.

  38. Defense Rules Says:

@Dusthty … “This is team is not very good overall, the offense is shining but that pathetic semblance of a defense will have this team maybe 8-8 probably 7-9 at best.”

I’ll give you props Dusthty, at least you let everyone know where you stand, as opposed to so many who jump back & forth to both sides of the fence, then make excuses for poor performances on top of that. But on your 3 points:

o Team “not very good overall”. I basically agree with you, but with a caveat: it’s young in several key position groups & it’ll take time for them to gain experience. Be patient.

o “Offense is shining”. I’m personally ecstatic with the offense’s performance (and especially with how Fitz has operated it), BUT … this last game exposed its’ primary weakness: the OLine. They’re run-blocking has been meh so far this season, but their pass-blocking was exceptional in Games 1 & 2. They stunk against the Steelers, especially in the 1st half (improved in the 2nd half I thought). Fitz got killed & was pressured all night as a result, and that pretty effectively shut down the long ball (which has been our bread-and-butter Games 1 & 2). POINTS SCORED has gone from 48 to 27 to 27, even though Fitz’s PASSING YARDAGE has been OVER 400 yds in EACH GAME.

o “Pathetic semblance of a defense”. Aah yes Dusthty, Joe is sooo proud right now. You and most JBFers have bought into his ‘Defense Sucks’ diatribe very nicely. Not much sense in defending our defense on JBF any more since I keep seeing the same, tired cliches (FIRE MIKE SMITH … which effectively manages to get all the sheep in tow). Missing 3 of our 4 starting DTs? Who cares? Infant Secondary that’s been improving steadily every game? Big deal (Smitty certainly can’t take credit for that). LB-play that’s also been improving steadily? Unquestionably that’s because of Kwon, and has NOTHING to do with Smitty’s game-plan & play-calling. Oh, almost forgot, did you happen to notice that the PATHETIC Bucs defense has created FIVE turnovers in 3 games? Oooh, and did you happen to notice that that PATHETIC Bucs defense scored a Pick-6 in Game 2 … the margin of victory? Oh, and did you maybe notice that the margin of victory in Game 3 was the Pick-6 thrown by our OFFENSE but that the POINTS SCORED counted against our PATHETIC defense? Nah, didn’t think so.

Just pulling your leg BTW Dusthty, I like your comments.

  39. Bucsfanman Says:

Clarence- The race card is what precipitated the name-calling because, IMO it is an ignorant statement. If you want to take it back, I’ll apologize.
As to Winston, there’s no logical explanation for this franchise’s inability to find a franchise QB. However, 18-27 is a win/loss record that can DEFINITELY be replaced. Holding on to Winston just because he’s a #1 pick makes no sense if he can’t produce wins.
He’ll get his shot and I hope he produces. I’m not a Jameis “hater”, I am a Bucs fan. I want wins! It doesn’t matter who the QB is, I’ll root for them regardless.

  40. 813bucboi Says:

    pickgrin

    I agree…..

start Winston…..simple as that….fitz has done his job….

why let fitz dig us into a hole in the first half only to demand Winston get us out of it…..start Winston, let the team rally around him just like they rallied around fitz……

Winston has had 4weeks to prepare for the bears….bears have been studying film of the bucs with fitz as our QB…..throw them a curveball and start Winston…..

run some of those RPO’s and bootlegs that were seen in TC…..a mobile QB like Winston can slow down that nasty pass rush…..

    #TUNNELVISION!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  41. 813bucboi Says:

lol….this team aint very good overall?….lol….that’s complete BS……are we the rams no, but we can compete with most teams in the nfl…..

as hard as i’ll been on smitty, I see huge improvements…..pass rush still need a little bit of work but im pleased with the run defense……

defense got the short end of the stick because fitz kept giving them a short field….and had it not been for conte, I think pitts gets 3 instead of 6…..

the player who needs to get put on the bench is grimes…..he cant play press and that off coverage is a wr’s dream…..davis played at the LOS most of the night and had great coverage on AB numerous times……

I said on Friday that we should’ve went with ryan smith and davis at CB because they both play well in man press…..folks laughed…..every big play that happened in had grimes getting beat……

this team is good…..stop making excuses…..

    #TUNNELVISION!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  42. Eric Says:

    Welcome back Mr. Driscoll.

  43. BucNAE Says:

Jameis has played the bears every year he’s been in the league… It’s the perfect game to come back.

  44. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Defense Rules, I absolutely like the young duded in the backend, I just think that licht good have done more to help them, and I am a gator grad and no way an FSU homer, but licht 100% should have drafted Derwin James esp after he felt he signed decent FA DL, JPP is 100% worth every penny and I wish his effort would go towards the rest of the defense, because he is using every ounce on each Sunday and hope he keeps it up…I used to be a mike smith supporter but, I do not know what he or his coaches see in practice to let him run the scheme he does, but if it was me, I would hang davis out on an island and bring more than they can block, davis sems like he can cover for 3 seconds, but then it goes to needing that eraser on the backend like Derwin James…..oh well, when james is on the NFL top 100 in the offseason, I am sure the Joes will have a great article about how he had more sacks than Vea

  45. Godeep66 Says:

@Miguel: put the bong down. JW’s only chance at Canoton is if a Janitors Job opens up. Or better yet he would probably be great at “shining the busts”.

  46. orlbucfan Says:

I bet Fameis starts Sunday. The Fitzster is just too banged up. Winston is ready and this Offense will continue to get better. Props to Jameis for all his hard work, discipline and dedication during the suspension. I like the idea of 3-1, too. Why not?

  47. orlbucfan Says:

Some of you yahoos on here have to be either pro trolls, or simply semi/ill/literate. That’s just the grammar; the football bloviating is another story! But hey, if it keeps those all-important clicks coming…………..

  48. ATrain Says:

    Hey Jimmy

I’m looking at the only QB in NFL history that throw for 400 Hardin first three games

Has gone 2-1 in one of the toughest schedule Starts

Oh sorry and still had less turnovers than Mr Fumbling

  49. Jameis Almighty! Says:

@godeep Famous Jameis Winston is first ballot HOFer. Can’t spell Winston without wins.

  50. Jameis Almighty! Says:

ATrain: Jameis completes 89% of non-dropped passes when healthy and receivers run the correct route. This saber-metric puts him already as one of the all-time greats.

  51. Sierra048 Says:

Jamies is a POS. God I hope they get rid of him. All talk and no substance. If he starts another game for the Bucs, then this 42 year fan starts rooting for the other team until he’s gone.

  52. Sierra048 Says:

Winston is a POS. God I can’t wait til he’s gone. If he starts another game for the Bucs, that’s the day this Bucs fan fepm their very first preseason game starts rooting dor the other team.

  53. Joe Says:

Jamies is a POS. God I hope they get rid of him. All talk and no substance. If he starts another game for the Bucs, then this 42 year fan starts rooting for the other team until he’s gone.

Nothing personal, but Joe’s hoping your are hating on the Bucs for the next 15 years.

  54. Reach87 Says:

How can anyone not a coach at practice proclaim who should start when one of the two hasn’t been in the building for three weeks? I believe Winston is and will continue to be the best QB we have had. But if you’re a Buc fan this season you have to have some faith that the ones watching practice every day will make the right call on this. Any Bucs coaches on here posting? No? Then perhaps this season, week 4 is a time to be reasonable. Root for and support all of the Bucs (players, coaches, staff) instead of pushing your own unlearned agenda. Same drivel thread after thread is funny. Sad because you’ll never truly enjoy the success we’ll have this year. Go Bucs!

  55. Godeep66 Says:

@jameis almighty: you also cannot spell SIN without Winston.
