Vernon Hargreaves Talks To Joe

Stop for a second and think that Vernon Hargreaves just turned 23 years old last month.

He’s very young and today Hargreaves talked to Joe about football maturity.

It seems Hargreaves now has a comfort level and the right attitude that will lead him to success. Joe asked Hargreaves about the challenges of playing outside and nickel cornerback in the same series, which it seems the Bucs might ask him to do regularly.

“It’s a lot to handle, two positions on one field. But now in my third year, you know, I’m handling it,” Hargreaves said. “I know the defense now. Now it’s a matter of mastering my craft.”

Hargreaves said he’s the about the same guy physically as when he entered the NFL as a 20-year-old. But he’s grown from the neck up.

“It’s more mental. That’s all the NFL is, is mental,” Hargreaves said. “You gotta know what you’re doing; you gotta have confidence in yourself and once you can figure those two things out, you’ll be alright.”

VHG will be fine….crazy how folks forget he entered the league as a young 20year old just like Winston….but unlike Winston, he’s expected to be a HOF in his 2nd year…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!….#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  3. AlteredEgo Says:

I hope so…it took Ronde 3 years surrounded by defense already established ahead of him… It took Ronde a year and a half. He was the Bucs’ second-leading tackler in Year 2. –Joe

  4. WestminsterCoBucsFan Says:

Hope this will be a breakout year for him. I find it hard to believe that this d-line looks anything like 2017…getting pressure on the qb will make the secondary that much better.

  5. AlabamaBucFan Says:

The past two seasons, VH was given the starting job, now he has two rookies pushing him. I think this will make him a much better player. Secondly, it hard to play defensive back when you have a poor pass rush. He has no excuses this year.

  6. Bucsfanman Says:

Get it together VHIII! Put away the finger-wag and get to work!

  7. Pickgrin Says:

Make it happen Vernon. Last year was last year.

  8. m0j0 Says:

When you are able to really understand the defense and where you need to be in any given situation, that’s more than half the battle. Then it’s about technique and making plays, and I am happy to hear that Hargreaves feels confident that he understands the defensive scheme and his responsibilities inside or outside, so now he can just focus on improving his technique and start taking advantage of his instincts and quick lateral movement to make some big plays for the defense.

  9. Brandon Wyche Says:

“You gotta have confidence in yourself…” man that is something I did not want to read from a guy who went MIA last year. This only helps add to the notion that his off season was due to him not having it all mentally. Cmon VHG, get ready to takeover Grimes starting CB position next season. Stop alluding to possibly being weak minded for us hardcore Bucs fans that want to see you win.

  10. Tony LA Says:

Ryan Fitzpatrick – the absolute worst starter in the NFL – is leading the Bucs.
But, yeah, let’s worry about VH3.

Does anyone remember when the Kaepernick thing first started and a lot of players were upset that Kaep didn’t have a job? Do you know who the most mentioned QB was in their tirades?

    Fitzpatrick.

People were literally screaming and blown away by the fact that Fitz – who led the NFL in interceptions as recently as 2016 – had a job in the NFL.

But, yeah, let’s not bring in ANY competition. Let’s give Winston 3rd string reps wile literally wasting oxygen on Fitz and the even worse Ryan.

    Wonderful. Inept.

  11. Buchead5588 Says:

The whole secondary will be a lot better because of our DLine GoBUCS I think a lot of people are sleeping on us

  12. Buchead5588 Says:

Didn’t mike smith help develope Desmond Trufant an Robert Alford when he was With ATL I think he can Devolipe young Corners some just need more time than others An as of right now the 3 rookie DBs we drafted are all looking really solid here’s to a new year An to Fitz going 2-1 in first 3 games GoBUCS

  13. SOEbuc Says:

Stewart picked off Jameis today. He’s straight up killin it. If he can show up in preseason VH3 might be sitting on the bench for another year.

  14. SOEbuc Says:

Really started getting back to Bucs now that training camp has started and before all that was talked about was Jameis. What’s the deal with Carlton Davis? Haven’t heard much and the stuff I have heard is not too terriff.

  15. BucEmUp Says:

As long as he is actually coving the wr and not playing “deceptive coverage” like the fearless idiot DC like to coach.

  16. BringBucsBack Says:

His third year in and he figured out (or not) the mental demands of the NFL. More epiphanies! Yeah!

  17. morgan1672 Says:

I think the “resurrection” of the 2016 draft class (N Spence and V Hargreaves) could be the X-factor for the playoffs.

  18. firethecannons Says:

So this dude has totally lost his luster, he will need to show us he has evolved, along with his sidekick Ryan Smith. I remember last year well he was the worst cornerback in the league, in case anyone forgets-go to youtube and watch the highlights of the Bucs/Cardinals game. Keep the barf bag close.

  19. Brandon Says:

It’s great if he can grow mentally but drafting a CB that is small and slow in round 1 is usually not good.

  20. Owlykat Says:

Here is the good news, Brandon, Rhonde Barber is just as small and slow as VHIII is. It might be he got tackling down in his second year as Joe says, but Rhonde was no star DB until his third year, and John Lynch wasn’t a star Safety until his third year either. I watched both of them from Rookies to Stars. This is VHIII’s third year and he is finally mastering the mental aspect of his craft. Stewart on the other hand is purely instinctual and he is way ahead of the curve right now; which is also the same with the play of Kendall Beckwith last year. I am hoping Jack Cichy will also be instinctual too when he is well.
