Smooth From 50+

August 2nd, 2018

“Dear football gods, this better not be a cruel tease.”

The Buccaneers’ kicking game has been a complete circus ever since Connor Barth got hurt in a basketball game before the 2013 season.

Bucs fans have been aching for relief.

You know the names, the shame and the embarrassment. Joe doesn’t need to rehash it.

And it seemed the Bucs might have been playing circus/soap opera again this offseason. The irony of dumping Roberto Aguayo last year for the Jets’ full-time kicker in 2016, Nick Folk, and then ditching Folk this year for the guy the Jets wanted instead last year, Chandler Catanzaro, who they didn’t keep this year, is too stunning.

But Catanzaro, 27, is here with a big contract and he’s been having a strong summer. Heck, he’s made Bucs kicking boring again, as it should be.

During today’s indoor, underwear football practice at One Buc Palace, Catanzaro wowed the crowd with a smooth-as-silk 54-yarder. Here it is below. And no, this isn’t some sort of Michael Carbonaro special trickery.

Enjoy!

    Thank GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Lord Cornelius Says:

    Thank God is right.

So far my biggest positive takeaway from TC is that the D-line so far seems to be living up to their pedigree; and that MJ Stewart seems to be balling both in the slot and outside on whoever he’s covering. Even on the Godwin play from yesterday the guy was on him like glue.

Plenty hated that pick. But he was supposedly the best CB at the Senior Bowl and every year it seems we put a lot into how players play there (Marpet/Cappa as other examples)

  3. Buc believer Says:

That’s nice we have a player actually doing what he is paid to do…in camp. Let’s see what happens on Sunday when it is 27-27 with 5 seconds left and he tries to make it 30-27

  4. Robert Says:

indoor and no pressure. should they not ALWAYS make these? and he barely made the 54yards.

it’s like teeball justr hitting between the 2nd baseman and short stop. should be 90%

    not impressed.

  5. Bucsfanman Says:

Yay! A kicker that can kick! Who knew it was a thing?!
Now, lets do it consistently in games. Get’r done Cat-man!

  6. Lord Cornelius Says:

    @Robert

When our K situation has been so bad and we’ve heard of a lot of misses in past TCs – it is not necessarily impressive to hear this but it’s damn sure more comforting than hearing about more Aguayo or Folk or whoever struggling.

Also that kick looked to clear the 54 yards by at least another 3-4+ yards- although it’s hard to tell on that angle.

  7. SC Bucs Fan Says:

54 yards is a sand wedge, he should make it

  8. Pickgrin Says:

$3.75M guaranteed for the year is a very steep price to pay for a kicker.

Catanzaro better work out to justify that kind of guaranteed expenditure.

At least we know he’s got a pretty good leg for 50+ yard attempts. But being consistent from 45 yards in is the most important thing you want to see in a kicker.

  9. Dooshlarue Says:

    Oh, how quickly they forget.
This is GREAT news for Bucs’ Fans!

  10. Defense Rules Says:

@Pickgrin … “$3.75M guaranteed for the year is a very steep price to pay for a kicker.” Bucs GM Mark Dominik didn’t seem to mind paying kicker Mike Nugent $2.5 mil to replace Matt Bryant after the 2008 season (Bryant was making half that much at the time). Bryant BTW just re-signed with the Falcons … a 3-year contract for $10.5 mil AT AGE 42. How’s not re-signing Bryant worked out for the Bucs? Great kickers can really impact the outcome of football games today as you well know (Bucs probably could’ve won 2 more games at least IF we’d had a kicking game worth a hoot last year). Hopefully Catanzaro is one of those great kickers, and stays with us for a LOOOONG time.

  11. Godeep66 Says:

Great news on the kicker. He will go dback wn as one of the GM’s best signs.

  12. 813bucboi Says:

    DR

why do you always fell the need to correct someone or talk about past regimes…..

@pickgrin is one of the smartest posters on here….pick doesn’t need your help digging up dom’s BS….

all he was saying is that he better be worth the money….just like Jensen, just like curry and just like everyone else we brought in during FA…..

go play tag with your booty partner rhealist…….

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!….#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!

  13. Eric Says:

I remember when McKay got so pissed at a kicker he had an offensive lineman kick an extra point.

  14. Defense Rules Says:

813bucboi … Pickgrin is one of my favorite posters on JBF. And BTW, so is Realist and StPete and TBBF and Lord C and Bucsfanman and a number of others. And no, you’re not included in that list. To be quite frank, I don’t give a hoot what you think. Negative people don’t impress me.

  15. Pickgrin Says:

“How’s not re-signing Bryant worked out for the Bucs?”

Turrible. Just TURRIBLE. (best Charles Barkley voice)

    Yet another “Thanks Dom!” decision….

And thanks for the compliment bucboi – but I’m pretty sure DR wasn’t trying to talk ish. Just adding to what I said and saying he hopes the new kicking investment pays off long term. Are you boys not getting along again?

Play nice people. This whole football thing is all for entertainment yaknow….

  16. Stanglassman Says:

That linemen McKay sent out to kick was center George Yarno. He made it toemo style. Bill Cappice was the kicker. “ Cappice is Capput “ I’m not sure if that was a McKay quote or if fans were all just saying it after that game.

  17. 813bucboi Says:

    DR

boo hoo….im not on your list…..lol….

you call it negativity…I call it reality…..

Pickgrin Says: But being consistent from 45 yards in is the most important thing you want to see in a kicker.

    AMEN! to that.

Anyone know how many games we lost due to missed field goals last year?

    GOBUCS!!!!.

  19. unbelievable Says:

Was going to say it ,but DR basically beat me to it.

Imagine if we had never let go of Matt Byrant (for no good reason)… so much agony we’ve had to endure since then.

  20. JimmyJack Says:

If Licht winds up getting canned his inability to get us a decent kicker will be a big part of the reason.

In the fours years he has been here kicking has cost us at least ten games. It almost seems unreal that kicking could cost us that much but we have all witnessed it.

  23. NFLRealist Says:

Some of you NEED YOUR EYES CHECKED!

I’m talking to those saying “he barely made it.”

Go fullscreen with the video and watch it again… the ball bounces off THE BACK WALL behind the stands. That would have been good from 60+ yards.

  24. BuccaneerScotty Says:

What did you care who gets paid what? It’s no your money……. and everyone in the NFL get paid a lot now its not 2001
