Savage Chris Godwin

August 2nd, 2018

“Man, this rookie facemask’s me and still he can’t stop me.”

Man, this got Joe fired up Wednesday night!

The Bucs sent out a video on their Twitter account of second-year wide receiver Chris Godwin catching a pass. Big deal, right? One of about 40 passes caught in a two-hour practice, right?

Well, not like this.

Most people in the NFL, locally and nationally, rave about Godwin. They believe he is the next wide receiver to blow up after what he showed his rookie season.

Who could forget his catch of a bomb from America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, to beat the Saints on the final offensive play of last year?

Well, Joe can tell you he has seen Godwin make physical catches in training camp so far, something he was known for at Penn State. Yesterday, he pulled off a highlight reel of a catch when he had to fight for the ball.

Rookie corner M.J. Stewart was on Godwin like a second skin. The pass was slightly overthrown down the left sideline. Stewart seemed to think he was going to have a pick.

But Godwin reached over Stewart and the two began fighting for the football like two overgrown children fighting for a foul ball at a baseball game. In the process, Stewart grabbed Godwin by the face mask and pulled down on Godwin’s helmet.

It didn’t work. Godwin came up with the ball as he had touched down, pulled off his helmet and stared briefly at Stewart. Godwin is a total class act but Joe imagines what went through Godwin’s mind may have been him yelling at Stewart, “Yeah, mother!@#$%^, go ahead and face mask my @ss, rook! I will still come down with the !@#$ing rock, %&tch!”

Then Godwin dropped his helmet and walked away.

Mic drop!

Damn, isn’t it great to have a talented wide receiver with a linebacker’s mentality?

This got Joe fired up.

Until Joe remembered the Bucs start the season without their starting quarterback.

A dog of a player. Big dog. Woof! Woof!

  4. BoJim Says:

Man. He’s so much better than I thought he would be. Gonna be fun watching him this year. Crap. It already is.

  5. JP_09 Says:

Dirk better occasionally run a hurry up with 5 wide (and not just in the typical 2-minute situations). Evans, DJax, Hump, Godwin, and either brate, Howard or Watson.

  6. ShutTheBucUp Says:

Trade djax. His services are no longer needed

  7. BigHogHaynes Says:

Good Dog Fight! There should be plenty of turn over in that much maligned defensive backfield!!

  8. firethecannons Says:

    Superfocused dude!

Nice seeing a rook Bucs cornerback fight back–yeah–he facemasked him but any other reciever would not of likely caught the ball and he would not of needed to to fm him, any other except AB-he catches everything

  9. firethecannons Says:

shut the bucup is right–if at all possible let us get a 2nd round for DJax even a 3rd plus

  10. Chris in WA Says:

Obviously that was an egregious facemask but in an actual NFL game would a zebra have flagged Godwin for taking off his helmet? Taunting?

I love it in training camp don’t get me wrong, I just would like to know for my own knowledge.

  11. Christopher Schiefen Says:

Like it, but you’re sorta missing half the point—-Stewart seems to be a goddamn player.

  12. BucsFan90 Says:

All this means nothing if Klueless Koetter keeps underutilizing Godwin and OJ Howard in favor of vets

WR Year REC YDS AVG LNG TD
    Jackson 2017 50 668 13.4 41 3
    Humphries 2017 61 631 10.3 43 1
    Godwin 2017 34 525 15.4 70 1

TE Year REC YDS AVG LNG TD
    Brate 2017 48 591 12.3 35 6
    Howard 2017 26 432 16.6 58 6

  13. Dooshlarue Says:

Love me some Godwin. I think he is gonna be Fitzpatrick’s go to guy.

  14. Bob in Valrico Says:

    Great article, Joe
I think the corner- WR matchups will help both be ready for this season.

  15. Bird Says:

Here is the thing I do to think they trade desean Jackson , especially since they are making conscious effort to get him the ball. However , the cupboard is full of talent at receiver

Have you seen the patriots situation. Brady has no one to throw too. Could we give up someone for a decent pick. I like humphries a lot but would you get a 3rd rounder for him right now. Evans and Godwin are the future. Desean has to catch 10 tds for them to consider keeping beyond next year

  16. Defense Rules Says:

BucsFan90 … Can’t help but wonder if maybe those stats only tell but part of the whole story. For instance, how much were they on the field (coach’s play-calling) versus how often were they targeted (defensive coverage, QB’s decision AND play-calling).

Chris Godwin was on the field for 449 offensive snaps (41%) even though he was targeted only 55 times (34 catches as you noted). He also played quite a bit on S/Ts (another 194 snaps). OJ was on the field for 608 offensive snaps (over 55%), but was only targeted 39 times (with 26 catches). He didn’t get nearly as many S/T snaps as Godwin though (only 47), so they both ended up on the field roughly the same number of times during the season … actually quite a bit for rookies.

Personally think it’s understandable for coaches to kinda use a player’s first season to ‘see what they’ve got’ so to speak, but would expect both to be more heavily used this year in terms of play-calling. And yet, whether they get targeted or not depends on what the defense is giving them (coverages) and on the QB. Jameis, for instance, seems to have a preference for ME13, Brate & Humphries. Fitz seems to be willing to spread the ball around more (for instance, he targeted Godwin 10 times in the Bucs win against the Jets last year). Too many weapons? Nah, nice problem for a QB to have.

  17. AlabamaBucFan Says:

Godwin appears to be a better player than Jackson. This is no knock on Jackson but I believe Godwin deserves a chance to start ahead of him.

  18. Mbfists Says:

His play is his voice!!!!! And his voice is getting LOUDER! Go Bucs

  19. Dooshlarue Says:

    Bird,

I was thinking the same thing yesterday when I saw The Pats lost another receiver.
Hump seems like their kinda guy. Not saying I want him gone, but business wise, it would be a good move. I don’t think Hump would mind too much either.
But, I would rather deal DJax if at all possible.

  20. George Says:

I say we move Jackson to the slot and make Evans and Godwin the starting WR

  21. Bucsfanman Says:

Chris Godwin will become a household name in very short order! The kid is a beast!
    Fanman has spoken!!!

  22. Wausa Says:

If Fitz can lead the Bucs to a 1-2 record or an almost unimaginable 2-1 record while Jamies is out. This team will have an opportunity to do some really special things this year.

Jameis and Chris have a really good connection on the football field and I would expect that to increase exponentially this year starting in week four.

  23. stpetebucsfan Says:

But how can he be a “real” football player…a DB55 “Alpha” LMAO.

He’s nothing but class off the field. Quiet and mild mannered. Doesn’t cheap shot guys…that was the PERFECT “drop the mic” moment. Guy has it all. Drop the helmet, make your point and walk away quietly. The quiet guys are the scary guys not the freaking loudmouths.

This guy is now my idol and clearly my next Buc jersey. This has to end up being the play of training camp! Finally an “Old School” Buccaneer.

Thanks for that awesome video Joe!!!

  24. Buccernutter Says:

Don’t kill me for this as evans is my favorite player but godwin has the potential to be more well-rounded and possibly better than Mike. Dude is legit.

  25. 813bucboi Says:

    fan90

your right…..all that talent will go to waste if dirk continues to be predictable and use the wrong personnel…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!

  26. Harry in Costa Rica Says:

    SWAG!! That was absolutely awesome!

Thanks Joe for the great video.

  27. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

That would be lovely to see in a game against the stankin Putty Tats! Big year for Godwin and OJ.

What are you talking about trade DJax??? If Welcome Back would utilize him better he would take all of Humphries catches away. He is more versatile and much more talented. Some of you guys I don’t believe.

  28. Billy_43 Says:

I don’t think Koetter letting these dogs eat this year will be an issue at all. Winston to Howard has already developed in OTAs and Training Camp.

Let’s just hope Fitz can find them both as often.

I truly believe he will be better at the 2nd and 3rd reads right off the bat, than Winston would be, so these 1st 3 games could be a blessing in disguise.

I also think Winston is gonna light the Bears up in week 4.

Here’s to a 4-0 record going into the bye and the NFL flexing some Bucs games to Prime Time!!

  29. Destinjohnny Says:

I was kinda hard on M.J. early as I thought we should have drafted Guice over him.
I think this guy is a tuff dude and baller.

  30. Dooshlarue Says:

Maybe Godwin can start mentoring our Mental Midget QB?

  31. ChanEpic Says:

    BEASTING!

  32. Buccfan37 Says:

Dang I push the spot to see the video and only get a whiteout twice. Can’t figure out why.

  33. feelthepewterpower Says:

Chris Godwin is a God Send! Actually good coverage my mj, but just a great catch. We need all of our receivers with the same tenacity and mindset they theyll do whatever it takes to catch the ball.

  34. BigMacAttack Says:

I called Godwin the steal of that draft. I believe it may have been highest potential receiver in the draft. Said he would blow up to the level of Marvin Harrison. Supreme Talent and Licht spotted it. He will become better than Evans and with the right passer these guys are going dominate any DB.

  35. chuckabuc99 Says:

    Godwin is a monster

  36. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Desean Jackson who?

  37. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

They need to trade Desean. Might get a 2nd for him.

  38. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

With him and Evans on the outside and DJax in the slot, watch out

  39. gp Says:

Love the spirit, the drive, the tenacity, the grit, and especially the attitude!
But PLEASE!, don’t take your helmet off in a game situation like that

  40. Bobby Says:

    Yep Get used to it.

  41. Neil Says:

What a beast and class act! He is literally the ideal player / teammate / person. Damn!! I’m a fan of all the wideouts. Evans is the most inconsistent. With my eyes, DeSean Jackson did what he was brought in to do (while on the field). He caught everything in his vicinity and did not lose speed. Humphries was super consistent as well. I live in NJ, so I always was aware of DeSean Jackson and his talent. Some of the greatest punt returns I have ever witnessed were by him. Naturally, the Bucs special teams is terrible, but do they utilize Jackson? C’mon now! Who are we? An organization that makes smart decisions? No wayyyyy.

Anywho, Godwin is my new favorite player. Go Bucss!
