Dirk Koetter Detects Frustration, Improvement In Jameis

August 3rd, 2018

Jameis Winston watching the first-team offense without him under center

Joe spent a lot of time through training camp studying Jameis Winston, America’s Quarterback, when he’s on the practice sidelines.

It was apparent quickly; Jameis sometimes looks like a punished and remorseful kid when the first-team offense is taking reps and he’s not. Joe discussed it last week at JoeBucsFan.com world headquarters and on podcasts but is typing about it here for the first time.

Dirk Koetter said today that he detects frustration in Jameis when he’s working with the backups.

It just feels like a different Jameis at times. Part of that is probably throwing to receivers in third-team duty.

“He’s handled it fine,” Koetter said of throwing to a different group of receivers.

“I think it’s probably a little frustrating for Jameis to not always be going with the top guys,” Koetter said. “But what I’ve talked to him about, I think the best quarterbacks in this league make anyone they’re playing with better. There’s not better example of that than Tom Brady. I mean, for years, it’s not like he’s always had an all-star cast of receivers, but he makes them look pretty good.”

Koetter also praised how strong Jameis’ throwing and arm strength has been. “He’s really finishing his throws … as good as I’ve seen, Koetter said.

  2. __TGH__ Says:

So he’s pouting now? I guess that’s better than the full blown tantrum he threw on the sideline last year.

See everyone, he is becoming more mature.

  3. AlteredEgo Says:

The coaching staff and FO is analyzing and filming every moment Jameis is on the practice field and sidelines between snaps…..we are talking about IMPROVEMENT here…if Jameis is flat lining …trust me…they are not just thinking of down the road…they’ll bring in a predictable QB THIS year….

  4. BucaneroDorado Says:

    sound great!
Thank you for your hard work Joe. Best site for Bucs fans.

  5. The Graham Tram Says:

Hey Joe- Any idea what the patriots did with Tom and Jimmy in training post-deflate gate?

It feels like with the quick passing attack, that Tom has such good chemistry with his receivers. I don’t know if that’s just because Tom is that good or he really learns his receivers. it’d be an argument for Jameis seeing the majority of reps with the 1’s in camp.

  6. Eric Says:

Id be more concerned if he liked the practice demotion.

  7. Buc50 Says:

Pouting??? Try human nature. I guarantee that you would not be happy working in the mailroom when you know you ran the whole show the previous year. Jameis knows it’s for the best of the team but that doesn’t mean he has to be happy about it.

  8. donuts Says:

Pouting and being a professional don’t go together. Grow up already!

    So now he’s pouting? Smh

As for making everyone around him better, Hump and Brate called they said “We got Jameis’s back!”

  11. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

Gosh it’s tough for Jameis to go through the after affects of groping someone. If only people would support him more.

  12. Seminole Bill Says:

He did this to himself, and has no one to blame but himself. In fact, he got off easy with a 3 game suspension. A mature Jameis would endure his suspension without sulking; once over he will need to take control of the team again. If Joe is seeing him act this way, the rest of the team is also.

  13. louis Says:

Having Jameis work with the backups will elevate his game, and subsequently will also elevate the backups games as well. This also will enable the other quarterbacks to be more familiar with the first team players should the need arise for them to step up as next man up. The team will thus be more prepared in the event of injury. The long term effect of his suspension will light a fire under his butt to be a smarter and more complete quarterback. His observation skills will be enhanced. Watching an experienced vet like Fitz use his different skill set albeit less than Jameis’ can only make him a better leader and player. Thank god this setback happened early in his career!

  14. DB55 Says:

This fan base is just used to seeing their star player lose with a smile. Slowly but surely this fan base will suck the winner out of jw.

It still is incredible to me how awful the fans of the Bucs are on this site.

  16. Seminole Bill Says:

We play in a division that has Matt Ryan (Falcons), Drew Brees (Saints) and Cam Newton (Panthers). And we have a guy that gropes Uber drivers, does something with crab legs, and did (or did not) do something to a woman at FSU. And now he is sulking? We fans are the ones to be sulking. We (in my case) have paid a lot of money for season tickets for the last 11 years and thought we would be banging on the door to the playoffs by now. Instead, the guy who was supposed to be the franchise sits on the sidelines.

Joe – the next time you see Jameis sulking, kick him in the butt.

  17. JWBUCS Says:

The pain that Jameis is experiencing right now just might be the reminder to stay away from alcohol while away from home at least, and to also keep his damn hands off of women other than his fiancee… Serving as a Franchise QB is a tremendous compliment for your personal development as an athlete, however, this label comes with significant responsibility… The payday over his potential career lifespan is a nice reward!

  18. T REX Says:

  19. Oneilbucs Says:

Tom Brady is a dink and dunk quarter back. People act like he throws the ball up the field. The last time he did he had moss on his team . That’s why he is not the goat to me. How many 7 steps drop back plays he has done in games over his career. Every body who played quarter back since Tom Brady been in the league for the pats have won there. MATT Castel, Jimmy G , n the Colts qb have won the team n coaching is the reason why he win. When he sit out those games they still won .

My favorite comment (from an earlier thread). “He (Winston) is maturing at his own pace!”

  30. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Joe…..you should go over and remind him that he’s still “America’s Quarterback”

  31. Tony LA Says:

Man, there are a lot of moron commenters on this site.
It’s actually painful to read what some of you write and to realize that you’re actually out there walking about the earth and spreading that cynicism everywhere.

    Come on people.
Joe chose a very specific frame for the picture above. If I took 1000 pictures of each of you, I’d easily find one of you that covers every range of emotions whether you were actually feeling them or not.

I flew in and was actually able to watch a practice and watched Jameis quite a bit. He is a bit quieter, but still VERY good at congratulating and pumping up his teammates. He watches and pays attention. He’s being… wait for it… it’s a new word for a lot of you…

    RESPECTFUL

I came away impressed. But, sure, let the rest of you judge everything from a single still frame with zero context. Sounds super intelligent.

  32. tnew Says:

I know I get bashed because I believe words matter. Joe writes that Winston is “remorseful” Just a little help guys

according to Webster… Remorseful (adj). filled with remorse; sorry.

Go further and look at Remorse.

Remorse (noun) a gnawing distress arising from a sense of guilt for past wrongs

Now, I’m gonna take Joe at his word and believe that Joe had intention in his word choice.

Sounds like most of you read this as sulking, pouting, petulant, moody etc.

If Joe says he’s pouting, then we can beat up Winston for that and I will join in.

Remorseful is exactly how he should appear at this time.

  33. Bob in Valrico Says:

Not a big fan of Brady personally but, he has averaged averaged 55 passes over 20 yards and 10 over 40 over the last three years. If thats dinking and dunking
then Jameis should be doing more of it.
Jameis averaged 44 over 20 yards and 6 over 40 yards.

  34. Rob Says:

Every time I see the “America’s quarterback” I want to let out a hysterical Rick Flair inspired WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  36. Jeffbuc Says:

Bob in Valrico. You now that a 5 yard slant can go for 20 yards. Or for 40. So that stat you posted means nothing. Go look at his average distance traveled on throws. That is the stat that matters. To reveal how far he actually is throwing the ball. I have seen gronk turn 5 yard catch into 20+ times. Same with eldeman and a lot of throws to the running backs get huge yards. Just cause he does a hb screen and the running back takes it 80 yards for a touchdown. Doesn’t mean it still not dunk and dunk.

  37. Jeffbuc Says:

Jameis Winston was second in the league behind only Deshaun Watson in distance ball travels per attempt at 7.7. Tom Brady was 15th at 6.6. So yeah he dinks and dunks.

  38. Oneilbucs Says:

Bob go watch Brady play he moves the chains. That’s why they win . We need to focus on moving the chains. Winston is a good quarter back. If dirk would let him play his game but he don’t so that’s the real problem. Look what Freeman did 500 yards rushing and 25 td n 6 ints . Then he started saying I’m not running no more and he is out of football now . Teams that win in the league win by any means necessary go make a play look at Rogers.

  39. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

That’s my face when the mouth breathers beat me to the buffet.

  40. Bob in Valrico Says:

    Jeffbuc
There are analysts that have pointed out the work that Brady has done to improve his deep ball.
Jameis gets most of his air yards in the in the intermediate range 10-25
yards. There is plenty of room for Jameis improvement on the deep ball.
If he improves this ,then his air yards could approach ten yards.

  41. Reach87 Says:

Yuck it up haters! Enjoy your imaginary “See – I KNEW that boy was scum” moment..

You’ve got 2 more months to give this your best – your all – to trash Jaboo’s character. Legally apparently…

Don’t worry Joe will feed you plenty of opportunities.

But come October when Winston starts his season and comes out kicking ass from the getgo – I will gladly watch so many of you slink back into/under whatever holes or rocks you climbed out of when news of the suspension first broke. Never to be seen or heard from again in many cases.

Definitely looking forward to that point in the season regardless of what our record is the 1st 3 games.

Winston is going to show you THIS year why any thoughts that he isn’t or might not be a franchise QB were in fact quite foolish, shortsighted and – well – just wrong…

  45. BrianBucs Says:

Winston has absolutely nobody to blame but himself.
Licht has spent the last 4 years getting offensive weapons to make Winston look better. However, the great QB’s make the other players around them look better

  46. Bob in Valrico Says:

    Jeff Buc,
Air yards can be derived from both short and long passes and Jameis gets most of his in the 10- 25 yard range. That is his strength,so far. One of the best QB
air yards average I remember, was accomplished by Kurt Warner.I attribute that to the many 10-12 yard patterns that they were able to complete mixed in with their deep passes.
I believe that Jameis wants to complete deep passes as much as Koetter does.
He just needs to take that next step and complete more of them.

  47. Ed Says:

The Bucs have had other inaccurate quarterback’s like Josh Freeman Trent Dilfer and Doug Williams and now Winston. Williams was a winner Freeman Winston and Dilfer Have never had career winning records. We will never know about Chris Sims because of his spleen injury. Brad Johnson and Jeff Garcia probably were the most accurate and decisive quarterbacks the Bucsof had in their won/loss records reflect how well they knew how to manage their offenses. I won’t compare Steve Young Vinny Testaverde or Steve JT Berg because they were in the Hugh Culverhouse era where no quarterback could have a possibility of winning. My point is quarterbacking requires a mental strength and control something that Winston needs to get more of. This has Nothing to do with race as Dilfer and Testaverde both being White did not possess strong understanding of the quarterback position. Winston has to become less reactive on the field and play under control developing a more academic understanding of how to manage your football team

  48. Buccfan37 Says:

All I took from this segment was that Koetter said Jameis looked good and is healthy and likes to throw to his number one receivers. Good news!

  49. Gene Deckehoff is my hero Says:

Dilfer is an NFL champion… he obviously did something right…

  50. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

    Two words: Nick Foles.

  51. BrianBucs Says:

    Homer

    I Agree.

Nick Foles will be the Bucs starting QB in 2019 and Winston will be a backup somewhere else in the league. Right at this point however not another team in the NFL would touch him and he has zero trade value

  52. BrianBucs Says:

I also see where Nike cancelled their endorsement deal with Winston today. Just the first of many I’m sure

  53. Oneilbucs Says:

BrainBucs you just a hater just like homer Nick foles sucks. He was on a good team. Any body could have won there . Won’t y’all just leave. Jamies is the quarter back here so why don’t y’all just not watch the bucs play .

  54. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

Yup. This team is a dream gig for a solid QB. How do you think Brady would like to have all these WRs and TEs

  55. Walter Seidel Says:

Look, the Bucs could start 0-3, and Winston comes in, goes 13-0 with a passer rating of 125, 30 TD’s and zero INT’s, and zero fumbles….and he’d STILL be a jerk and an assaulter who shouldn’t be on the team.

  56. Oneilbucs Says:

Yep just like big Ben. But he’s white so he gets the pass. Then that means Trump shouldn’t be president. But y’all wouldn’t never say that. So just deal with it Winston is our quarter back rather you like it or not just like Trump is the president rather I like it or not but I’m over Trump n big Ben so you get over Winston.

  57. Buc1987 Says:

    Like DB said.

    Look…. I’m a Buc fan…. for life.

Also a pretty damn big Jameis fan too, but DB%% is right Jameis.

This area and it’s Bucs fanbase does NOT deserve you. Some of us sane ones deserve you, but for the most part it’s 50-50 and no need to give your all for that. Go win your Super Bowl kid.

    #RunJameisRun

  58. Buc1987 Says:

Yet looking into my crystal ball…. I see Jameis balling out and the Walter’s of the world needing to find a new team….cause Jameis stays for the next 10 years.

That would make me and MANY Buc fans happy. The Bucs are winning again…and no more Walters…..

    🙂

  59. D1 Says:

    Jeff Bucs,

First, 1.1 yd less doesn’t take you from down the field thrower to dink and dunk.
Also, you understand how avg is different than actual # of deep balls attps.
JW avg doesn’t include a lot of short passes.

  60. richbucsfan Says:

The picture is Jameis’ response to hearing that Nike did not renew their contract with him.

  61. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

OneilBucs: like it or not, other people here who are Bucs fan are allowed to have opinions that are different than yours. If I was a Steelers fan I wouldn’t want Rapisburger on my team. I went to FSU and explained away the rape allegations there by saying the girl wasn’t credible. And I was happy when the Bucs drafted JW. But after watching him play for 3 years, after watching him make goofy decisions on the field and possibly criminal ones off the field and really thinking about it I feel exactly like Damien Woody does: enough is enough. I don’t believe JW any more and if I would cut him. If you don’t like my opinion too bad.

  62. Walter Seidel Says:

If you think I believe it’s ok Ben to be in the NFL, you’re dead wrong. If you think it’s a race issue, you’re just another race baiter, and I have no time for you. If you think the Glazers are all gung ho over losing potentially half their fan base, you don’t understand the Glazers. And if you believe Winston has been an angel since March 2016 (highly unlikely), go ahead and believe, but his track record is what it is. GO FITZ!!!

  63. Walter Seidel Says:

    Nike gets it.

  64. Dapostman Says:

    Last 3 years:

    Carolina 32 – 16 lost SB in 15 season
    Atlanta 29 – 19 lost SB in 16 season
    New Orleans 25 – 23

    Jameis Winston is 8 – 9 vs these 3
    Ryan Fitzpatrick is 0 – 1

That’s without a defense except for a 5 game spell and ZERO running game the last two years.

I would find it hard to believe that Winston is going anywhere especially after the Bucs go 10 – 6 this year and he cleans up his act.

    #Get After It!

  65. Oneilbucs Says:

Homer why do y’all love to say race baiting when the truth is the truth . I’m not calling you a racist. But I know how the national media is n how black quarter backs are looked at n treated. And then you do have other blacks in the national media who go along to get along. Look how Vick every game he started they brought up him going to prison, n never brought up big Ben cases they let him move on with his life. Watch how they do Winston the hold year . Ps what about Trump you didn’t say nothing about him .

  66. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

Oneilbucs: I don’t doubt for a minute that race plays a factor in how some people perceive or talk about athletes. It’s not the reason I’m disgusted by JW and his antics, lying to the team, etc. I don’t know what people in Pittsburgh say about Roethlisbuger but maybe if he gets a pass it’s partially race based. But I do think it’s a mistake to assume that anyone who thinks what JW has done is wrong is saying it based on race. I loved the dude until this last event. Made excuses for him at FSU where I graduated. But this last thing and how he handled it changed my view and made me wonder if I was wrong for giving him a pass before. Not sure how Trump is relevant in a sports blog but I think he’s a fraud and possibly the most damaging President we’ve ever had. Plus a criminal and offensive in many ways. If I had to pick I’d take Obama in a second over Trump. But again, I don’t see how it’s relevant on a sports blog. Have a good one man.

  67. Rick Says:

None of us have a right to assume it is pouting. Can’t tell you how many times I have been perceived in the wrong way just because of a look on my face. What could look to be pouting is genuine remorse on the young man’s part. Your angry about the about the position he put the team in? That’s fine but stop assuming and playing Mr. or Mrs. Psychoanalyst and expert in human interaction

  68. Jimmyt Says:

    Terrye25,
What crime r u talking about? Another Jameis hater that has no clue! It amazes me that 90% of the replies on this site have used the suspension of Jameis as a reason they want him out of here. Nice try but you can go back to the first game in his rookie year to see the HATE from so called Buc fans toward Jameis Winston. For every record he has broken they have a negative counter point. They act as if they don’t realize there are 21 other players not including special teams that determine the outcome of football games. I believe the damage has been done beyond repair. Jamie’s will NOT want to be here after his rookie contract expires. As Jameis thrives he will do what Kirk Cousins did in Washington. After franchise tags expire Jameis will take his talents elsewhere. Also I blame the local columnists as well. Tom Jones has become a so called expert on who should play for this team. This is the same columnist that supported Joe Paterno. Go figure!

  69. Jimmyt Says:

Homer, what did he do that bothered u in college? Crab legs & Facebook prank? Don’t even ATTEMPT to count the allegation as an issue. It is not illegal, the last time I checked to have consensual sex in college. So after Jameis rookie year, 3 years ago, Jameis lied. I’m sorry that has ruined your life but all I know is that in this community for more than 3 year JW has NEVER even had a pic taken of him in a club partying and NEVER ever has he been arrested for even jay walking. Josh Freeman used to have to be carried out of bars on game day weekends. I have never even heard a rumor that JW has been a problem in this community since being drafted. Now Tom Jones has a deep rooted issue w Jamesi, he had an issue w a motivational speech Jamie’s gave to classroom of KIDS! Really? This is the same Tom Jones that had an issue when Joe Paternoster was fired yet yesterday said Urban Myer should never coach another game. He has ZERO CRED! All this JW hate will result one day in you getting your way because I am sure Jameis will not forget. He will get a Super Bowl win, unfortunately it will not be in Tampa
