Adam Humphries’ Kick-Six

The Bucs now have their version of a kick-six.

It was 2013 in the Iron Bowl, the storied rivalry game that divides the state of Alabama. No. 4 Auburn hosted No. 1 Alabama. The winner goes to the SEC title game, and with a win there goes to the national championship game.

With the game tied, Alabama decided to try a 57-yard field goal with seconds left to win the game. The kick was short and returned by Auburn’s Chris Davis all the way for the game-winning touchdown since deemed the “Kick-Six.”

Auburn would go to lose the national title game in its final moments to a cocky young prodigy of a quarterback who just won the Heisman Trophy, fellow son of Alabama and leader of Florida State. A guy by the name of Jameis Winston.

Well, the Bucs had their version of a kick-six Friday night. Though lacking in drama like Davis’ kick-six, it was nearly as entertaining. With seven seconds left in the first half against the Lions, the third preseason game of the season, Detroit coach Matt Patricia, down 13-6, attempted a 62-yard field goal by Matt Prater.

The kick was short and in the end zone was Bucs wide receiver and return specialist Adam Humphries. The pride of Clemson took the ball up the right hashmarks, cut hard to the left and up the left sideline, got a key block and cut hard to the right, turned upfield, dodged a couple of tackles and scored a 109-yard kick-six.

Humphries said he wasn’t sure he would score but the crowd that stayed through the lightning delay and deluge told him otherwise.

“It’s funny. The crowd kind of lets you know when you have it,” Humphries said. “I made a couple of cuts, got past the kicker, and I heard the crowd get real loud. I looked up at the videoboard when I was running in and saw it and there was just a bunch of white jerseys behind me. So, I knew there about the 20-yard line in that I had the touchdown.”

Bucs coach Dirk Koetter was downright giddy about Humphries’ play.

“That fires everybody up,” Koetter said. “You’re always working on situational plays like that, because in the NFL they always come up. And to see those guys execute that, that was awesome.”

Good instincts to get the endzone by Hump. Risky business going for long fieldgoal unless its at end of game. , but its the preseason.

  6. Bob in Valrico Says:

The Bucs special teams look to be much improved in some ways, with the return of Josh Robinson. He and Ryan Smith work well together as gunners. But we gave a big return that gave Detriot momentum.

Plays like that, as a Bucs fan, we rarely see, usually it’s a comedy of errors (or at least a penalty to wipe off a great play like that), so this could be something potentially different and special this year, #hopesup

“Humphries is SLOW!” “Humphries couldn’t even make another team”
“Hump is easily replaced by Bobo or Martino”

    Idiots!

  10. HowToSpellRhonde Says:

No discredit to Hump, but the Lions tackling and coverage looked like it had a Benny Hill score playing behind it.

We need guys to “make a play”. That was the epitome of “making a play”.

Ironically if it hadn’t been for our own ST suckking and giving up six Hump’s play would have been a game changer.

RJS went crazy and then crazier as we realized he was going to score. So much fun…..

I mean sittting only a few rows up in the end zone is such a great experience to see the players and wow amazing amazing run historical going to buy humps food next time he comes my spot.
