Among The Best

July 30th, 2018

Rated with elites.

When Joe read this stat, it fried his mind.

It didn’t make Joe want to jump out of bed and start chugging beers. Instead, it made him angry as hell how some are hellbent on destroying the Bucs for the foreseeable future.

The following comes from the PFF tribe so Joe is always leery of that. And throw in the fact it highlights passer ratings makes Joe even more suspicious. Joe isn’t much of a passer-rating guy.

That stated, Joe is also a pattern guy and the guys in the positive category of this list are damn impressive.

Pat Thorman of the PFF tribe decided to calculate the quarterback ratings of all quarterbacks in the past 20 years in the fourth quarters of close games. Take a wild guess who has the fourth-best quarterback rating in the fourth quarter with the score no larger than a seven-point difference in past two decades?

You guessed it, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.

Why is Joe giving this stat credit? Well, aside from the other seven quarterbacks on the list, Joe knows just last year alone Jameis gave the Bucs a lead four times in the fourth quarter only to watch the gutless defense of the Bucs throw away wins, often to garbage quarterbacks. And Joe hasn’t even factored in how having a garbage kicker allowed the Bucs to flush a win over the mighty Belicheats down the toilet.

Just look at the QBs other than Jameis at the top of the list. Everyone was/is elite (Daunte Culpepper was a three-time Pro Bowler before a second knee surgery trashed his career).

Oh, and at the bottom of the list are two former Bucs quarterbacks. Well now.

Just the thought of folks out there actively trying to run off the best quarterback this team has ever had over something that happened over two years ago; Jameis never stood in front of a judge or was even questioned by the law as a result. It just frosts Joe’s mind this nonsense!

Friggin’ people!!!

Haters will hate and the holier than though”s will never see the light they are too busy putting on their halos and then there are the gator fans who are still ticked off that Tebow actually does suck at QB.

  2. feelthepewterpower Says:

Jameis put up the third best pff grade in the fourth quarter of last season and fans want to get rid of him. Winston is the future of the franchise which is why Fitz sits in week four if he is 0-3, 1-2, 2-1, 3-0.

  3. feelthepewterpower Says:

I also think the time off will be good for Winston’s shoulder as it had been under diruess the last few years from baseball, pass attempts, and hits taken. He will be fresh with new perspective learning fromcthe sidelines on how he can improve his game, leadership role, and overall team.

  4. OneBuc55 Says:

For those who love to point out Winston’s win lose totals…

This is undeniable proof that JW is getting us in position to win games…Our problem since #3 has been under center is our defense and our kicking game can’t close out football games….

Love’em or Hate’em Jameis Winston is a gamer. The reality is the Bucs franchise is holding Winston back, not the other way around…

  5. HFXBUC Says:

    Hahaha.

JBF: “That stated, Joe is also a pattern guy and the guys in the positive category of this list are damn impressive.”

Those patterns you speak of. They are called analytics.

    Love the Joes!

  6. Kalind Says:

Finally. Thank you Joe. So tired of this crap. He’s not going anywhere. Thank heavens.

  7. El_Buc941 Says:

So your telling me the ONLY QB in NfL history to start off his career with back to back 4,000 yard seasons should be run off?the same one that is only 2nd to the best (Aaron Rodgers) when it comes to completion percentage when it comes to throwing on the run/out the pocket?the same exact kid who season after season has cut down on interceptions?and not to forget he did all that without a RB? You have to be kidding me right?are we talking about the same kid?so who do y’all expect us to replace him with?

  8. BucEmUp Says:

It’s all the defense. Doesn’t matter who the qb is at tis point. As long as our coverage unit continues to play off the line by 12 yards and trying to “deceive the wr into thinking he isn’t covered when he really is ” Mike Smith’s own words….idiot,
We are going to continue to watch loss after loss after…..

  9. DB55 Says:

I count 6 SB rings and at least 8 SB appearances but yea let’s cut the kid.

  10. Im tired and 87 is right Says:

Something all true Bucs fans were already aware of. I’ve been to all of his home games since he has been here and I for one can assure you Jameis was not the issue. I can’t wait to see how he performs with a defense he can trust and know that he can live another down. Go Bucs!

  11. Dooshlarue Says:

    Joe, Americas’ Stat Cherry Picker!
I understand though, it was time to throw the Soiled Messiah Worshippers a bone.

Now, please go back to covering the Team that will be starting the season and maybe we’ll see how Grabby McCrablegs does when he comes back, say around mid-season.

    Thanks.

  12. Walter Seidel Says:

We’re not running him off Joe. He’s running himself off.

  13. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Per: David Purdum BSPN

Jameis Winston, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (20-24-1 ATS, 44.4 percent)

The Bucs have been favored just 12* times with Winston starting, and they are 3-9 ATS in those games, the ‘”worst” mark as a favorite of any starting QB in the league.

  14. VeeJay24 Says:

    They have ulterior motives Joe.

  15. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I agree that Winston does well in the fourth quarter and doesn’t throw interceptions in the red zone…..but it’s usually earlier in games where the turnovers put the Bucs in a come from behind position….that and the very slow starts…..we need a much more explosive offense early.

Our defense has really hurt us badly late in games…hopefully, with our new depth, we will be much stronger.

  16. Buchead5588 Says:

Yes people are sleeping on Jameis he’s really good he gets a lot of slack because of the W/L column but he is a lot better the people think yes he has thing to work on still An he will get better at them he is going to show people this year after this humbling experience

  17. passthebuc Says:

Best college course taken was how to lie with statistics.

  18. Bucsfanman Says:

TBBF- Great points. While our defense certainly couldn’t stop anybody, the offense put itself in these positions far too often.
If only he had that same percentage earlier and THROUGHOUT games, he would have something those other QBs listed have, WINS!
A defense and kicker wouldn’t hurt either!

  19. 1sparkybuc Says:

He is by far and away, clearly our best option. I suspect that if Jameis was white, some of these “fans” would have absolutely no issue with an incident from two and a half years ago. As far as I’m concerned, Jameis drank too much, made a pass at a woman, and was rejected. Not smart, and certainly not gentlemanly, but hardly worth the death penalty. Our president has bragged about that, and he doesn’t drink. He has no excuse. Jameis has been a model citizen for two and a half years, and he’s the most prolific QB in franchise history. Anyone who wants to cut him at this point has other issues.

  20. Casey Morgan Says:

    Cut him

  21. Ed Kerber Says:

It is not how great he is in the 4tg quarter it is the bad in quarters 1-3 and off the field. The man should be lifting other people gear like a rookie and asking forgiveness instead of demanding patience! I don’t think he should be cut, but unless HE changes, he should not be renewed.

  22. Buccfan37 Says:

    Yeah, cut him a check.

  23. Buddy Says:

What? The Mariota fans that are hating certainly don’t like those stats! What was Mariota’s touch down to interceptions last season again? I still have a very hard time getting through my head that these people want a QB that throws more interceptions than TD’s!!!

  24. Alphabucfan Says:

love it joe keep up the good work.

  25. Jman5 Says:

It’s easier to light up prevent defenses

  26. Marc Says:

    JOE,

America’s benchwarmer did this to himself. And stop using the “it happened 2 years ago” excuse. Time doesn’t obsolve people of their sins. He was a young guy and hopefully — HOPEFULLY — he has learned from his mistake. Go with that instead. But stop acting like people have it out for him for no reason and stop acting like he is innocent of any wrong doing. Kind of sad that you and Ira sat on one of your earlier podcasts saying you wouldn’t support him anymore if the NFL found counclusive evidence that he was guilty of touching that Uber driver and now…… we’ll, here we are.

    – Dissappointed Bucs fan

  27. 813bucboi Says:

    that’s a damning stat…..

  28. Dapostman Says:

Take a wild guess who has the fourth-best quarterback rating in the fourth quarter with the score no larger than a seven-point difference in past two decades?

    ****************************************
    @Jman5,

Why would teams be in a prevent defense if the game is close? News flash, they weren’t. Sounds like more FAKE NEWS from the anti Winston camp.

    #Get After It!

  29. BrianBucs Says:

However, he was #1 in Crotchgrabbing and Lying.
Hey Joe, how many other QB’s on that list were accused of Sexual Assault twice and have a history of theft and vandalism?
Also Joe, how many of those guys led the league in turnovers?
And please stop saying that he is the best QB the Bucs have ever had. Makes you sound football ignorant.

  30. JimBuc2 Says:

Enough hyperventilation already, sez this fan. Strap on yer helmet and beat the man in front of you. Get it right this year, show the fans you mean business. Go Bucs!

  31. RODNEY J ALLEN Says:

Marc Joe n Ira said irrefutable evidence which without a second witness or video that’s hard to do n the NFL knew that hence a 3 game suspension to say face. Something happen but it wasnt sexual assault. If making an unwanted advance is sexual assault I’ve been sexually assaulted alot in live by drunk women

  32. Jman5 Says:

Prevent us not always used only in a blowout

  33. Jman5 Says:

Is* and one can still be probucs and anti embarrassment only fools can’t see that

  34. Dapostman Says:

    @Jman5,

Spin it any way you like. My question to you is why DO YOU feel embarrassed for Winston’s actions? I might be embarrassed for him but he doesn’t embarrass me. That to me is foolish.

  35. webster Says:

This is why tampa has some of the most stupid fans. We have an idiot on this thread claiming teams play prevent defenses in one score games in the 4th qtr. Even if that stupid logic was the case, are teams only playing prevent defenses against the bucs in one score games and not against other teams? So according to this idiot poster, teams do not use prevent defenses in blowouts only. News flash, that would not change the fact that jameis is still #4 in the past 20 years. According to your stupid logic, jameis is not the only qb facing prevent defenses in one score games so why do you look to diminish his accomplishment? Because you are a butt hurt mariota lover. That is all.

  36. Joe Says:

I also think the time off will be good for Winston’s shoulder as it had been under diruess the last few years from baseball, pass attempts, and hits taken.

That is a good point but there is not one bit of doubt in Joe’s mind that Jameis will be throwing footballs (somewhere) almost daily during his suspension.

If Jameis were wise, he’d drop a couple of grand on Bruce Arians and work out with him and watch Bears tape with him during the suspension. Or even Peyton Manning.

  37. Joe Says:

I suspect that if Jameis was white, some of these “fans” would have absolutely no issue with an incident from two and a half years ago.

Joe really doesn’t want to think like that but am pretty convinced otherwise. 🙁

  38. Walter Seidel Says:

Joe, that’s just wrong. You’re basically accusing anyone that is not supporting America’s Groper as racist. Please consider recanting.

  39. Tony LA Says:

    @BrianBucs
at least you are consistent with your nonsense. I’ll give you that.

To all the above still making crablegs jokes…
Guys, it’s old. Not funny anymore. Don’t be that cringe-worthy guy making lame jokes to the waitress at Denny’s. If you’re still making crablegs jokes – you ARE that guys. They’re only laughing in the hopes it gets you to stop.

    Joe,
Obviously I’m a fan of your work. But you really can’t pick and choose what analytics to follow and which ones you don’t. It devalues your opinion. You can’t slam PFF like you do, only to then use them to support a view of yours. Analytics are good and they are very real. And that’s okay.

  40. Joe Says:

Joe, that’s just wrong. You’re basically accusing anyone that is not supporting America’s Groper as racist.

Absolutely not! There is no way that A = B here. That’s a grotesque generalization.

But you can’t tell Joe some aren’t motivated by this.

  41. Buc1987 Says:

Buddy…it’s called an agenda and any fan that has been a fan as long as I have and wants Jameis Winston gone…… is either NOT a real fan and is posting in Iowa somewhere. OR They are a real fan and never really wanted him anyways because of FSU. The kid kept his nose clean for 2 1/2 years. Unless of course he didn’t and there is something waiting to drop.

Forgot…they also could be some 12 yr old girl that just recently became a Bucs fan.

Many Bucs fans have waited longer…but THIRTY years for a franchise QB is far too long for me. Why is it been that long? Cause they are THAT freaking hard to find!!!! Ask the Glazers!!!!

    Exclamations for YOU Realist!!!!

  42. Buc1987 Says:

Jameis Winston IS the best QB the Bucs have ever had.

    That’s for you Brian…..

  43. Mike Johnson Says:

Winston rated with elites? Guess I need to change my smoke suppliers. I’m not going as HIGH..as I’m suppose to. Because somebody here be smokin pure fantasy. Winston is the worst QB in the NFl South. And arguably one of the worst in the league. He needs to step it up when he comes back. He’s a No 1 fraft selection who has NOT..lived up to the hype. I give him a C-… at best. He’s got maybe..2 more yrs before he is regulated to the official NFL Back-up Bend!!

  44. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I support Jameis 100%. And will continue to do so unless something more recent is proven. And something a bit more serious than a crotch grab that he stopped once she rejected him…if he is even guilty, which is unproven.

Which is why he only got 3 games.

  45. Godeep66 Says:

    @mikejohnson: spot on.

  46. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Mike Johnson Says
“Winston is the worst QB in the NFl South.”

I do not believe that for a second. You can look at wins and losses all you want, but the thing about them is it takes a complete team to win.

How does he compare to the other QBs stat-wise?

  47. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Jameis Winston (injured)
    Games Played: 13
    2017 Attempts: 282
2017 Yards: 3,504 (on pace for 4,312 yards in 16 games)
    2017 Yards per Game: 270
    2017 Passing Percentage: 63.8
    2017 Total Touchdowns: 20
    2017 Interceptions: 11
    2017 Lost Fumbles: 7
    2017 QB Rating: 92.2

    Matt Ryan
    Games Played: 16
    2017 Attempts: 529
    2017 Yards: 4,095
    2017 Yards per Game: 256
    2017 Passing Percentage: 64.7
    2017 Total Touchdowns: 20
    2017 Interceptions: 12
    2017 Lost Fumbles: 3
    2017 QB Rating: 91.4

    Drew Brees
    Games Played: 16
    2017 Attempts: 536
    2017 Yards: 4,334
    2017 Yards per Game: 271
    2017 Passing Percentage: 72
    2017 Total Touchdowns: 23
    2017 Interceptions: 8
    2017 Lost Fumbles: 0
    2017 QB Rating: 103.9

    Cam Newton
    Games Played: 16
    2017 Attempts: 492
    2017 Yards: 3,302
    2017 Yards per Game: 206
    2017 Passing Percentage: 59.1
    2017 Total Touchdowns: 22
    2017 Interceptions: 16
    2017 Lost Fumbles: 1
    2017 QB Rating: 80.7

According to the stats, Winston is not the worst QB in our division. Winning is a team stat. Not an individual stat. That’s why the win are not listed in single player stats.

But in truth, according to the stats, Winston is much better than Newton, and about equal to Matt Ryan, who is older and more developed.

2017 was Winston’s worst year, yes, but his worst was much better than any of their worst years.

Without question, Drew Brees is the best QB in this division. Maybe the best in the league stat-wise. But Ryan and Winston are neck and neck in the #2 spot.

  48. 1sparkybuc Says:

I’ve been been a fan of this team since before there actually was a team. I don’t have decades to wait for another SB victory. Starting over from scratch with a new QB, HC, or GM is not an option for me. IMO the best shot this franchise has ever had at becoming a dynasty is in place right now. We have key pieces in place on offense and defense like never before. Let Licht and Koetter finish what they’ve started with Winston. Keep it together. Focus on preparation on beating the Saints in a few weeks. It’s 2018

  49. Jeffbuc Says:

Haters crack me up. Teams were playing prevent in a one score game in the 4th quarter. Good one jman5 yeah just shows that you will hate no matter what. And let me guess the other quarterbacks on the list in the same game situations were throwing agains press man coverage while the blitzed two linebacker every play.

  50. Eric Says:

Same people saying the same crap

  51. 541BucsFan Says:

Do you watch the games? If you want to talk stats how about picks and fumbles? How about W and L? Our losing record under Winston isn’t on the defense alone. I’ve watched Winston’s turnovers lose games and demoralize the team. Some random stat does not change anything.

  52. DislocatedBucsFan Says:

BS stat. For not being one to place much stock in stats you sure do it for JW. He’s unreliable. He’s just not that good.

  53. Oneilbucs Says:

That’s why I hate they every started talking about W n L to quarter backs that don’t play defense.

  54. Bucsfan951 Says:

Slow play by the offense the first 2-3 quarters tired the defense out by the fourth quarter. Not that hard to understand. Not defending the defense but can’t place all of the blame on just them. Just as many games lost by the defense in the fourth, that many games that same defense held the opponent to under 25 points and the offense couldn’t do ish!
