Time To Be Great

June 23rd, 2018

America and “greatness.”

In some respects, Ian Beckles feels bad for America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.

While the former Bucs guard and popular local radio personality applauds the Bucs for surrounding Jameis with pass-catching weapons, Beckles believes the Bucs have done Jameis a big disservice by not addressing the running game (until this offseason, but the jury is very much out on rookie Ronald Jones).

In fact, the way Beckles spoke of the running game in a recent edition of his podcast “In the Trenches,” Beckles believes Jameis needed a good, solid, dependable running back more than he needed DeSean Jackson or Chris Godwin.

“It is hard to be successful in any era of football if you can’t run the football,” Beckles said. “That makes your quarterback that much better. Play-action becomes that much more effective.

“As far as Jameis Winston goes, it is important for him to win this year. Period. I have said that numerous times. Because he is getting to a point in his career where greatness never takes this long. And greatness has always won at this point.

“You have had a long enough time to put your signature and your stamp on this organization. You have been inside the building for a long enough time. Now it is time for you to show everybody there is a reason why I got picked first. Period. … He can’t [blame] those three or four bonehead plays every week to play-calling.”

Joe is torn on this issue. Joe pretty much agrees with Beckles when it comes to a running game but let’s not pretend Jameis was hot garbage last year.

Could Jameis improve? Of course. Yet again, as Joe stated previously, if the defense didn’t shat all over the field in the fourth quarter last year and if the kicking game hasn’t been a complete and total circus the last few years, that win-loss record last season would be drastically different and we wouldn’t be having this conversation that Jameis needs to step it up this fall or his career is a shambles.

Sure, Jameis could use a running game. But he has proven he can win without one (see: 2016 season).

What Jameis has yet to prove is if he can win a game without a defense.

Beckles encourages feedback on his podcast and welcomes e-mails at IanBeckles@radioinfluence.com

In the end, it was not assault. She said no, he stopped (if true). So not assault.

  2. mark2001 Says:

Hello Joe…my posts aren’t showing up anymore. Did I do something wrong? You could at least tell me if that is so?

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

For those who think Joe stopped the “America’s QB”…..think again.

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Bonzai…..groping is in the definition of sexual assault……nice try.

If she said OK or didn’t complain…that’s one thing but the definition of sexual assault is “unwanted sexual touching”…..(groping)

    Look it up.

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    mark2001

    Happening to many of us….

  6. mark2001 Says:

All I did is define Sexual Assault… Sexual assault is an act in which a person sexually touches another person without that person’s consent, or coerces or physically forces a person to engage in a sexual act against their will. You can argue it was more fear than harmful contact but if you just want to argue she feared his touch, the standard is that the victim must believe that the tortfeasor’s conduct will result in imminent harmful or offensive contact unless it is somehow otherwise prevented. And that sounds pretty much what happened.

  7. Doctor Stroud Says:

And, why haven’t the Bucs had a decent running game (or a defense) to help out the QB? The team invested a first round pick in a RB (Doug Martin) and stuck with him through thick and thin. We all saw how that turned out. Bucs fans are debating if and how many years releasing JW will set the franchise back, but it’s not just one player or one decision. The franchise has been set back by a series of bad decisions throughout the years. There is little margin for error to hit on a first or second round draft pick, and the Bucs’ front office just hasn’t delivered on enough of them to turn this team around and win.

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Defending Winston

It is very hard to defend Jameis Winston when he won’t defend himself….and that is what it looks like.
Sure, the whole thing may be some sort of scam….but who benefited? As far as we know, the Uber driver received nothing and asked for nothing….

You have to go with the preponderance of the evidence here and it is on her side….in particular because of Jameis’ behavior afterwards….he didn’t report it and he didn’t object to Uber….

If it were me and I were falsely accused….I would have gotten my attorney to contest the issue with Uber…reported it immediately to the team and perhaps filed some sort of defamation against the driver….none of that happened, so what are we to believe?

Jameis is now getting a 3 game suspension….subjected to the extreme embarrassing and negative press….blowback from fans and millions in lost income from endorsements and future contracts….perhaps even his job.

All of this and he is innocent….I’m simply not buying that.

  9. BrianBucs Says:

    @ Joe

    If Jason Licht does the smart thing and calls the Eagles about Nick Foles, it would be really great for you, because you could start off your posts by saying ;

“America’s REAL QB, Superbowl Winner, Super Bowl MVP, Pro Bowl MVP Nick Foles!

  10. jmarkbuc Says:

    Joe

Jameis has much bigger problems than no running game and a shoddy defense…hence so do all of us.

  11. Jff Says:

Joe has a good misdirection game.
Glazers need to pull out the scissors.

  12. jmarkbuc Says:

    Dead on Tampabaybucfan

  13. Chris Says:

    Joe,

I have a lot of respect for all the hard work you guys do. But please stop calling him “America’s Qb”. He’s not your typical role model. He’s more of America’s trash. I don’t care how he can get “better on the field” when he’s behaving like this off it. Heck even his behavior on the field is disgusting.

If/when the nfl hands out his official suspension, and the Bucs, the glazers and Jason Licht support Jameis Winston, I’m officially done supporting this franchise. I’ve been a life long fan of the buccaneers since I started following the game. But there are important things than football.

  14. Bobby B Says:

Running game wouldn’t have helped him with Uber driver. Common sense much more important. Let’s stop ignoring the elephant in the room. He needs to grow up. Probably too late for here and now since he lied to all of us with his statement of innocence. Up to Glazers now

  18. tval Says:

    Bye, Chris…waaaaaaaaahhhhhhh

  19. Defense Rules Says:

OK, this is really starting to get old Joe. Bucs as a T-E-A-M are a LOT bigger than one player. In the 3 years Jameis has been here, the conversation has always been predominantly about HIM. Oops, take that back … until you all decide it’s much better sport to bash Smitty & the Bucs’ defense.

And now we hear from Beckles that “Poor Jameis didn’t have a running game to fall back on. Boo hoo.” (Paraphrasing of course). For starters, Jameis DID have a running game in 2015, and the Bucs still went 6-10. They went into 2016 with a new HC but obviously thinking the run game would be good enough. It wasn’t, but ironically our record improved to 9-7. Licht & Koetter obviously thought they could improve on that in 2017 … they were wrong. Martin screwed the pooch, Jameis fumbled away opportunity after opportunity despite being surrounded by close to the best receiving weapons in the NFL, and oh ya, the defense slid from 15th in POINTS ALLOWED to 22nd. Bummer.

Jameis is now on suspension for the first 3 games, just like Martin was last year. We started 2-1 last year in case folks have forgotten, then hit a 5-game losing streak AFTER Koetter re-inserted Martin into the lineup after he hadn’t even been allowed in the building for 3 weeks. Wonder if he’ll use the same approach this time.

  20. tval Says:

Defense rules has LOST IT..BEST WR CORPS??? Roflmao!!!!!!! I’m done

  21. tval Says:

It shouldn’t be SO EASY to tell a jameis hater is a trump voter…lol!!! Isn’t that a sad state???

  22. jmarkbuc Says:

    Good point Defense

Maybe exactly what this team needs is to have JW completely away from the team to start the season.

We could benefit with a break from the sh!tstorm of JW3.

  23. tval Says:

If you think attorney Cline isnt looking for $$$$ I gotta bridge for sale in Dubai…lmao!!! Get a grip on reality..my god

  24. tval Says:

Trump voters hate jameis..lol!! Go figure

  25. Jff Says:

Joe says outlandish things about jameis because he’s a hack who uses jameis for site hits/money

  26. Maze Says:

Jameis Winston clearly needs all the help he can get. He’s not even in the same stratosphere as say a Tom Brady who makes everyone around him better.

  27. passthebuc Says:

Licht should not call Philly. That would be like posting a billboard saying fleece me. He should wait until the season starts and Philly calls them, but never before.
I’ll bet in light of events, Licht’s phone will be ringing off the hook. The Cowboys are probably asking if JW is available. The best move would be to bring back Glennon, just based on familiarity with the offense and find a QB that can be groomed. Then continue to draft core players. DL and OL

  28. Steven007 Says:

    @Tampabaybucfan

It’s clear now that one Joe is too embarrassed to tap out the eye rollingly embarrassing “America’s Quarterback…” BS (for obvious reasons) while the other Joe simply can’t help himself for stubborn reasons he won’t reveal. Yesterday I suggested a change:

Tampa’s Mostly Starting Quarterback For Now (see you week 4), Former Pro Bowler Jameis Winston. There Joe, I corrected it for you.

  29. Maze Says:

Bonzai get a grip man. Pathetic

  30. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Steven007 & Jff

Joe admits it’s a money making ploy and Joe admits it…..so now we know.

Joe- Still with the “America’s Quarterback” moniker huh?? What gives haven’t you learned your lesson yet?? You sound like a idiot and lose credibility daily by doing so.

Clearly you are not well-versed in how to make cash on the internet. Joe has numbers and data that tells him what works, not guesswork.

  31. Pickgrin Says:

So I see and read the article – thinking – “ah – finally something other than Ubergate to talk about”

    Scroll down – NOPE…

Those of you posters being the most reactionary about this Winston suspension thing would do well to realize that over-reacting to this now (which many of you are doing) is unwise – if for no other reason than that everything being talked about so far regarding this “situation” – is based on “reports” and hearsay. Nothing “official” has come out. Winston has not been suspended yet. NO actual details have been officially released.

We don’t know anything about this yet from the NFL’s point of view.

At least wait until whatever gets released from the NFL on this actually gets released before going off the deep end.

Winston isn’t going anywhere btw – so some of you might want to chill a little bit with that kind of talk….

  35. tval Says:

I wonder how many say “jameis needs help”, then support trump to THEIR DEATH…and MAKE THEIR WIVES OBEY!!!!

  36. AlteredEgo Says:

Hello….Jameis has done the Bucs a big disservice

  37. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Pickgrin

My 40-year media experience has told me that when multiple nationwide stories like this come out and there is absolutely no denial or even “wait for the facts” rebuttal…..the stories are predominantly true…..unfortunate…

Now, is there a remote possibility this is all a hoax by the fake news?……hope so, but don’t think so.

As for continuing the conversation regarding Jameis……that is simply human nature and the subject that trumps (no pun) everything.

This article looks like it was something ready to go before the Jameis news. The click-on was to a podcast 5 days ago.

  38. Defense Rules Says:

tval … “BEST WR CORPS??? Roflmao!!!!!!! I’m done.” The exact quote tval was “surrounded by CLOSE to the best receiving weapons in the NFL.” ME13, DJax, Godwin, Hump, Brate, OJ … not a bad receiving corps to start with I’d say. Can you imagine what someone like Brady could do with just that group of six? And BTW, not a Jameis hater at all; I’ve supported him since the beginning & truly believe that he’s got a bright future IF he can get his head on straight. But I’ve played enough sports in my life at various levels to know that T-E-A-M-S win. Winning is ALWAYS about more than just one player.

  39. Steven007 Says:

    @Tampabaybucfan

Thanks for pointing that out. I’d like to say I’m surprised and saddened as such a trite assertion (I’m not). JBF seemed to do just fine before we had JW and they assigned him that ludicrous and embarrassing moniker. But when I called out Trollmax a few months ago and unmasked him under his new name (Reality-Is-I’m-A-Sad-Troll) it became clear then that the Joe’s were either complicit or looked the other way because: clicks. Eyes on advertisers. I guess we can rope this into the same category but at the end of the day is you professional integrity really worth whatever extra peanuts this one particular conceit brings you (allegedly, because you can’t quantify those metrics in any kind of accurate fashion)?

  40. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Pickgrin…..this article was likely prepared before the Jameis news and was based on a podcast 5 days ago…..Human nature to continue the subject.

    Steven007

Be careful!! I was sent to the cooler for questioning Joe’s motives…..The only reason why I posted that is that it came from Joe himself….so I felt safe to post it…..

Certainly, all in the media do what they can to attract an audience….unless you are NPR and are subsidized….you need to do that, so I find no fault with it.

The “America’s QB” is a provocative term now, almost cynical and sarcastic and like I said, Jameis would be the first one to call for it’s termination.

  42. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Tampabaybucfan Says
“Bonzai…..groping is in the definition of sexual assault……nice try.

If she said OK or didn’t complain…that’s one thing but the definition of sexual assault is “unwanted sexual touching”…..(groping)”

And by law, the victim has to express that it is unwanted before it can be considered assault. When she voiced it, he stopped, preventing it from becoming assault. Had he refused to remove his hand, then it would have been assault.

Sorry, it may not be politically correct, but its the truth.

  43. Steven007 Says:

You all must not realise he still a kid…you must of never grabbed a girls booty while making a move either..must of not voted for trump cause he a fully grown man grabbing the meow. Of anything he can say he was following his President example..nobody said hpw number 3 told people to stand up for our flag or how hes the first man in the building and last to leave. Who the offense has been built around. Who has put up the highest stats of buc qb ever. So let throw awaay arguably the 2nd best player on the tv over a accusation of grope. A lot people need to grow up and stop being soft. I’m reading the comments and completely disguested by the fan base but whats new. Boo hoo im cancelling my season tickets. I bet money you dont even go to the games period losers. I go to the games the crowd is weak the fans are weak. They let other teams fans sound louder and take up all the seats. I really want to curse you out but im sure my post wont be read by you heavy opinionated losers who i guess never made a mistake or got drunk and touchy if that even did happen. Which none of you know..maybe he said he was with his bous because it was his word vs hers and his word has bedn threw the mudd over the fsu incident. I think anyone wanting to cut him is inbred stupid. Yes lets cut a 24yr old beast of qb for what a taxi cab driver said on a drunken super bowl night lol yall are plain dumb.

  51. Sc Bucs fan Says:

Ill keep saying it, the longer he stays silent the less I want him here. Have to believe with no denial he starts to lose the locker room too.

  52. Silent_Partner Says:

Yeah, Winston was the reason for the historically terrible defense. This fan base is hilarious. Addressing the offensive and defensive lines and the running game are important, but people who think he’s been a problem for this team in any way kill me. That’s not even taking into account the idiot that coaches him.

  53. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Silent Partner

I have often posted….give Jameis a running game and a decent/average defense and he will win a Championship……now, I would have to add a contract to that.

  54. Steven007 Says:

    Tampabaybucfan

I do appreciate the heads-up, thanks. I know the silly name thing separates them from some of the more conventional sites, but long before it became as provocative as it is now they were still doing it. How it started and why I don’t know but it’s hard to believe it was just for more clicks because honestly, unless you’re already on the site you’re never seeing it. So I just don’t buy that. I think they came up with it and are now stubbornly sticking with it. Simple as that as Lovie would say.

  55. Not there yet Says:

America’s quarterback…..I guess these are the type of allegations you have to have and be a loser because he isn’t called that for winning.

Can’t defend this or pile on until it’s over but sure does seem Winston tried to protect himself by lying

  56. donuts Says:

    Bonzai
I think the point you keep missing is this is not about the law or legal rather NFL CBA and Goodell. The NFL appeal process is a joke.

They/NFL shield have complete power. The players are powerless as proven in the Brady and Elliot cases.

When I first heard this podcast a few days ago, that quote rung so true in my ears. Im glad JBF used it because its so true. Win or you may be moving on.

  57. Silent_Partner Says:

    Tampabaybucfan ,

All you had to do was look at his first two years or in college. He’s a play action QB who manages games well. Your HC is the one who is deficient on those fronts. Since he’s been there, I can name on one hand the games where he was the problem (first Carolina game his rookie year, the Patriot game last year, and a few more), but I can name several like that Buffalo game last year where your defense and running game did nothing while he put you in position to win if your coach had any semblance of how to call a game.

  58. AlabamaBucsFan Says:
