Jameis Fighting Golden Age Of QBs

June 5th, 2018

Back in the olden days of the early and mid-1990s, eight Hall of Fame quarterbacks were playing in the NFL at the same time. And during a piece of that time, Randall Cunningham, who isn’t in the Hall, was the best QB in the game.

Cunningham’s 1990 MVP season remains one for the ages. Wow.

Below is the list of Hall of Fame quarterbacks who competed against each other in the early ’90s and the total years in which they played.

Troy Aikman 1989-2000
John Elway 1983-1998
Brett Favre 1991-2010
Jim Kelly 1986-1996
Dan Marino 1983-1999
Joe Montana 1979-1994
Steve Young 1985-1999
Warren Moon 1984-2000

That’s more than one-fourth of the NFL sporting a Hall of Fame QB! (Remember, there are no Panthers, Jaguars or Texans in the league yet.)

It was a rough environment for a young quarterback to enter with high expectations. Somehow, Drew Bledsoe found his way to the Super Bowl in 1996 — and having Hall of Fame coaches Bill Parcells and Bill Belichick alongside him sure helped.

Fast-forward to the present and America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, is competing against the likes of the following nine quarterbacks who are on a clear Hall of Fame track: Aaron Rodgers, Eli Manning, Matt Ryan, Drew Brees, Cam Newton, Russell Wilson, Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger and Philip Rivers.

Scoff at Rivers if you wish, but the ninth-leading passer in NFL history has not missed a game since 2005, and he has just three losing seasons out of 12 as a starter. He’s also coming off his seventh Pro Bowl season.

Newton gets a laugh at times, too, but the reality of his game tells another story. History eventually will see him as the best running QB of all-time. He already is the career leader in rushing touchdowns for a quarterback, and after this season, he’ll likely pass multiple Hall of Fame running backs in that category. And he can do it all.

Wilson is 65-30-1 as a regular-season, and he’s 8-4 in the playoffs, one of the best career starts in NFL history.

So there sits Jameis. One could argue he entered the NFL at the wrong time in the worst possible division.

Joe’s not making excuses for Jameis. The Steelers’ QB has nothing to do with Jameis making bonehead decisions throwing the football or fumbling it away like a slippery fish.

Joe just finds the historical context of Jameis in this quarterback era quite interesting.

On one hand, it’s wrong to beat the guy up for being an average and young starter at 24 years old, but on the other hand, there are no excuses for Jameis in 2018. He has to step it up a notch in order to compete against the greats in the game and many young QBs who have had more success.

If Matt and Cam are HOFers then, the standards have really been lowered; watered-down.

  2. AlteredEgo Says:

Accuracy ….hitting his WR’s in stride….taking the surest option and throwing to the spot…then maybe…move the TEAM down the field and the accolades will accumulate ….this ain’t backyard hero football anymore Jameis…grow up !

  3. mark2001 Says:

Thank you. He needs to step up…2018/19….. Honestly, I hope he does. Any real Bucs fan would. But if not, time to look around, for just as the HC and likely the GM will be changed, we need to at least bring a young guy in here that can really push Jameis.

Joe’s not making excuses for Jameis”

    Uhhh, yes you are.

“it’s wrong to beat the guy up for being an average and young starter at 24 years old, but on the other hand, there are no excuses for Jameis in 2019.”

Has Joe already thrown in the towel for 2018?

  6. RickiBuc Says:

If the Falcons win 8 games this year with Ryan, he’ll move into the top 12 all-time in Ws for starting QBs. He’ll be very deserving when he’s done.

  7. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “there are no excuses for Jameis in 2018.” Now THAT’S a GRRREAT bottom line Joe. And not just for Jameis; for ALL the Bucs players & coaches.

  8. Walter Seidel Says:

    Joe corrected the “2019” “typo”……lol

  9. Cover Deuce Says:

Matt and Cam are not Hall of Famers. Respect the heck out of the way they play on Sundays, but I would put them just a notch below the other guys you mentioned.
Both are on the clear track, which is what was stated. The numbers will put them in if they can go another three years doing what they do. Ryan had a stunning first 10 years in the league. And Cam Newton is going to be hard to ignore if he has a few more good years in him. Unique player for the ages.–Joe

Joe, my post is somewhat off topic but seeing this made me think of how much Jameis loves the history of Randall Cunningham and the Eagles organization. The Eagles was JW favorite NFL team growing up as a kid. I’m sure the Eagles front office know this as well. I wonder how would the Bucs fan base feel if a QB trade offer materialized between the Eagles & Bucs (Nick Foles & Jameis Winston) would the Bucs entertain such an offer?

  11. 813bucboi Says:

Winston is just as good as any of those QB’s imo…..sure he needs to improve but he also needs better coaching…..I think he’s plateaued with dirk…..

with that being said, no one at OBP has any excuses!!!!!

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!….#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  12. Robert Says:

    more excuses

  13. Cover Deuce Says:

Matt and Cam are not HoFers

  14. Eric Says:

Used to be guys were given time to develop.

I looked at Bob Griese’s stats for first three years. 50 interceptions. 6 more than Jameis. With way less attempts and 14 game season.

And he became known as a guy very careful with the ball.

Have a little patience. He played truly outstanding football the last quarter of last year.

  15. Destinjohnny Says:

3 is always going to have consistency issues , that’s who he is.
But he kinda has a teabow presence to him.
    I’m glad we have him

  16. Trench War Says:

If some of the QB’s you mentioned actually make it into the hall of fame then the bar has been set lower or they’ll get in posthumously.

  17. gilhealy Says:

Jameis isn’t fighting anyone, or anything. He’s gaining valuable experience and honing his craft. The impatience shown in these articles is borderline juvenile. Only those not familiar with professional sports write such opinions. At 23, Jameis was well ahead of the curve. Now, 24, he’s entering his 4th year. You can take Ryan’s 10 seasons all you want. Winston’s will make his look like backup material. His numbers and record will go down as one of the all time best. But to expect that level of winning from a young man drafted by the worst team in the league is asinine.

  18. Dapostman Says:

The only thing holding Winston back is the fumbles. QB fumbles are probably the worst turnover you can have. He’s played in 45 games and thrown 44 int’s as a 20 – 23 year old QB. You have to assume that over the next 45 games the int will decrease. If the OL plays better and the offense goes with more 3 and 5 step drop patterns instead the long 7 step drops I think the fumbles will decrease a lot. The arrow is definitely pointing up for Winston. The ball is now in his court.

  19. Blue-footed booby Says:

Matt Ryan and Cam Newton have both been to the Super Bowl and both have won an MVP award and both have been multiple time pro bowl selections. Hah I will be willing to put up $50 grands with anyone here who thinks those 2 aren’t going into the HOF one day after they retire.
Those two will be getting their gold jackets in Canton someday, along with Drew Brees of course. As for our QB, err not so much …

This is the kind of crap that must end…

  21. Gambelero Says:

Rivers sat two years under Drew Brees who went 21-11. He became a starter on a very good team led by MVP LaDaimian Thompson. He went to the playoffs for four straight years, though once on an 8-8 team. From 2010 on though, he’s never been better than 9-7 with a 60-68 record and only one playoff appearance.

In 2015, he had his best year, threw for 4700+ yards, 66%+ completion percentage with 29 -13 TD to Int ratio, 2nd rated QB that year. Only thing is, the Chargers went 4-12. I think Rivers will get his jacket, but only because he has a couple years left with re-invested ownership building some good things around him. A Super Bowl appearance or win makes him a lock. Even a couple good playoff runs put him in. Two more mediocre, non-playoff seasons leave him out.

  22. BuccoDav Says:

I think Cam will never overcome the play in the Super Bowl that he didn’t make when he didn’t sell his body out and jump on that fumble.
This will keep him out of the HOF.
