Three Draft Picks Remain

April 27th, 2018

Is another fourth-round linebacker gem lurking?

The Bucs have been dealing since the draft began Thursday night.

It’s been a flurry of activity that led to five picks through the first three rounds.

Round 4 kicks off tomorrow at noon, and the Bucs have the 17th pick of the fourth round. It used to belong to the Patriots, who gave it to the Bucs for swapping second-round picks on Saturday.

The Bucs own their original fifth-round pick. And they’ve got Pittsburgh’s 28th pick of the sixth-round. Joe’s guessing but pretty sure that one came from the J.J. Wilcox trade last summer.

And that’s it.

No seventh-rounder for the Bucs. General manager Jason Licht never seems interested in keeping seventh-rounders, whereas former rockstar Bucs GM Mark Dominik did some of his best work in Round 7.

Get your rest and grab a sandwich for Day 3 of the draft.

This regime scored Kwon Alexander in the Round 4 back in 2015. Solid guard/tackle Kevin Pamphile was a fifth-round pick in 2014. Kenny Bell, well, never mind.

  2. TXBuc Says:

They do have a 7th, they got it as a comp pick…. its the next to last pick of the draft !
It is gone! Look it up.–Joe

SHAQUEM GRIFFIN!! Nuff said….Licht, trade up and snag this guy!! Let him change the culture of this franchise!!

  4. bucsfan1988 Says:

TX Buc, it was given to Buffalo with the trade down in the 1st round!

  5. TampaTown Says:

My heart is rooting for Shaquem. Plus his family lives here. How awesome would that be?

  6. Thespiritof1976 Says:

Shaq in the fourth. Then Dimitri flowers in the fifth. Parry Nickerson in the 6th.

  7. passthebuc Says:

Will he get picked or is he likely to be a walk-on.

  8. Marques Says:

Next pick Antonio Callaway. Give the kid a second chance.

  9. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

Shaquem the dream needs to be our next pick. He is a stud athlete and he can be used as a situational pass rusher and on special teams.

I personally think Licht did an amazing job in the first 3 rounds. The MJ pick is questionable but the other picks were on point.

Vita gives us a beast to play beside GMC and Jones is the perfect back to compliment Barber.

We also got a good corner and a potential freak at Guard. I can see our inside line being Marpet at LG, Jensen at C, and Cappa at RG. Talk about some attitude and strength there.

I hope we trade our 5th and 6th to get back into the 4th so we’ll end the night with 2 more talented players.

  10. Couch Fan Says:

Callaway has had a 2nd and 3rd chance already. All the talent in the world but he simply cant be trusted. I wouldnt spend anything more than a 6th on him, probably not even that.

  11. teacherman777 Says:

    Damn.

We could have had Harold Landry and Arden Key in the 2nd.

  12. teacherman777 Says:

I wanted the best 10 man D-line in the NFL.

  13. JJBucfan Says:

John Kelly Tennessee, Rodgers has run his course here, Koetter buried him last year. I don’t like Sims, Kelly can catch, run, block. 2 FSU guys-Sweat and McFadden would be steals and Shaq Griffin of course. If we ignored Safety for a reason, I hope it is because we are signing Tre Boston or Eric Reid, both young both studs. Hopefully the protests will end and these players will step into the community more and be a voice there and get back to playing football on Sundays (JMO). Reid already said he is done kneeling will now be out doing just that.

    DE josh sweat

  15. Lamarcus Says:

    No DE?

  16. Kevinator Says:

Ade Aruna, DE out of Tulane. The guy is a project, but he can get it.

  17. BucsFanScout3 Says:

DE Josh Sweat. Dudes a 1st round talent.

  18. OneBucPerson Says:

Shaq Griffin, our LB depth is bad. He’s fast as hell, has great technique, and even greater heart.

  19. Gambelero Says:

Not having a 7th may be a blessing in disguise because we can concentrate on signing some good UDFAs. That process may be even more nerve-wracking for Licht’s team; phone calls need to go out immediately after the draft ends. We’ve gotten some real UDFA gems, key contributors in the near-past

  20. Horse Liver Says:

“Rockstar” Dominik was so great he can’t even get a job in the league making coffee. When your best work as a GM is in the 7th round……………c’mon man, that says you SUCK. 7th rounders and UDFAs are the same animal.

Dominik is perhaps the worst Buccaneers GM of all time. And that is backed up by facts — W/L record, draft record, free agency and trade acquisition record. Oh and coach selection. But besides that he’s a dream.

  21. Gambelero Says:

Of the two guys I’ve seen a lot of, Sweat and McFadden, I like the former, but not the latter. Sweat was really misused—literally a victim of criminal coach abuse—by Charles Kelley. You can’t have too many edge rushing sack-meisters.

  22. Maybe next year Says:

FSU fans are such Homer’s! Still mad you didn’t get Derwin so of course you gotta hear the ridiculous comments about how we messed up by grabbing Vea instead. GET OVER IT PEOPLE VITA IS BETTER BY A MILE AND MORE IMPORTANTLY HE IS A BUCCANEER! SO STFU ALREADY!

  23. Horse Liver Says:

The remaining guys are all crapshoots, glorified UDFAs. Or nutcases with off the field issues. Go with raw physical talent, good intelligence and interpoersonal skills, and oh by the way, good production and coaching evaluations from high school and college. Go one more time on OL, DL and DB. There ya go.

  24. Maybe next year Says:

    Josh Sweat 1st round talent….Rofl! 🤣

  25. teacherman777 Says:

    Armani Watts for SS?

He didn’t have a great 40 time, but his football speed is great!!

He flashes so much on film!

    Bring Justin Evans friend home!

  26. lambchop Says:

Shaquem Griffin, Nyheim Hines, Antonio Callaway.

  27. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Licht might surprise everyone and draft QB Kyle Lauletta to groom as Winston’s backup.

  28. FLBoyInDallas Says:

If not Lauletta my money’s on Nyheim Hines.

  29. MadMax Says:

    Shaq Griffin hybrid lb/db
    Ade Arunna de
    Nick Nelson cb
    Desmond Harrison RT
Ryan Nall Full back (Alstott type)

  30. Bird Says:

    Shaq griffin baby

    All in.

  31. Tampabaybucfan Says:

rockstar Bucs GM Mark Dominik did some of his best work in Round 7.

Yea….really 7th round instead of the first 6…….who are these great players?

  32. Guzzie Says:

    Wishlist
S Kyzir White Siran Neal or Armatti Watts
    DEs Sweat Ejiofor Aruna Okrowoko
    OT Jamarco Jones
RB Nyheim Hines (kick returner Sims replacement) John Kelly Mark Walton (Quizz is toast)
CB Nick Nelson (can we have too many corners nope)
    C Brian Allen (stud)

  33. Bucs Guy Says:

Equanimeous St Brown would be a fantastic depth WR pick in the 4th. Can’t believe he didn’the go yesterday – 2nd talent.

  34. Topcoach1978 Says:

Darrell Williams LSU’s big in between the tackles back to complement RoJo…

  35. Doctor Stroud Says:

Thompson Twins-lovin’ ex-GM Mark Dominik often practiced the platoon approach to drafting, or drafting two players at one position of need. Licht has continued this practice by drafting two corners (in the same round!). Let’s hope that the results are better this time around.

  36. Doctor Stroud Says:

Just because Licht has three picks left doesn’t mean that he has our permission to draft a kicker.

  37. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

JJ – they drafted MJ to play safety. They didn’t draft back to back guys to be cornerbacks. Watch the film of MJ too. He plays like a safety and will be a nice fit with Evans back there.

  38. MadMax Says:

^ yep, if we’re going to draft a kicker, do it next year…Quinn Nordin!

  39. ManzielMadness Says:

Would like to see us take a look at another DE. Eijofor and Sweat are still on the board.

  40. ManzielMadness Says:

    And Okoronkwo

  41. JabooBuc Says:

so…i am one of the “FSU Homers” so if you don’t like it you can eat it for all i care. However, though i wanted James because he is stud, i am extremely happy with what the Bucs have done both in the draft and during free agency.

As for remaining targets, Josh Sweat is a 1st round talent who has real issues with his knee. He’s coming out as a Junior basically because he know’s the writing in on the wall regarding his longevity as a Pro. That is why he has not been drafted.

As for McFadden, and I am saying this again as an FSU homer, DO NOT waste your time with him. Slow and lacks mental toughness.

  42. Lord Corn Says:

DE / OT and maybe another DB and we’ll have nailed all the positions of my dreams for this draft. Not sure about the DBs but I admittedly struggle evaluating CB…

    DT-Vea
    Outside physical CB-Davis
    SS/nickle DB-Stewart
    DE-?
    RB-Jones
    OG-Cappa
    OT-?

Looking good so far. Now go Ogbonnia if you want pure speed off the edge or Ejiofor for more of a technician

  43. Ed Schwartz Says:

Watched tape of Hines, looks very impressive, faster than Jones, runs lower and finishes hard for a small back. I’d take him, we need the depth, if Jones does well early I’d be concerned Bucs will feed him too many carries and he isn’t strong enough in his lower body to take a pounding. Let another speedster, Hines share some carries. Barber-Jones-Hines, decent backfield to rotate. Sims is a waste because of his inability to find holes and his hesitation, he just never looked decisive. Barber-Jones-Hines all know how to find holes and extend runs.

  44. Mikep4bucs Says:

I jumped on here to share my opinion on Shaq Griffin and see there is a lot of you that want this kid too!! This player is inspiring to kids and adults, and is a hard nosed football player that WE all will rally around. The community outreach by him and Bucs could be incredible. Imagine the inspiration to kids like him, military vets who lost a limb, etc., because this guy isn’t looking for a handout, but is seizing the opportunity and making the most of it!! Draft him!

  45. Doctor Stroud Says:

@TDTB: According to Jenna Laine of BSPN: “Jason Licht just told us that the Bucs envision MJ Stewart as more of a cornerback than a safety, so there goes that. They do like his versatility though. They’re looking at him at nickel.”

  46. JabooBuc Says:

MikeP4bucs: Don’t think you will find anybody that would have a problem with the Bucs taking Griffen, especially at this point. Unfortunately, his is a position where we do have some talent. However, no doubt he could be used as depth and special teams.

  47. Mike Johnson Says:

I’d actually go with another DE, Ol and another running back. Lets see what we do.

  48. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    bucsfan1988 Says
    “SHAQUEM GRIFFIN!! Nuff said…”

Got my vote, so long as we get a right tackle too.

  49. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Doctor Stroud Says
“Jason Licht just told us that the Bucs envision MJ Stewart as more of a cornerback than a safety, so there goes that.”

Except that Stewart himself said that he was told he will be tried out at both CB and Safety.

Perhaps Licht put it out that he will remain at CB so that teams think he still wants a safety to muddy up the waters.

  50. JabooBuc Says:

Bonzai: I am sure they asked Stewart if he was willing and able to do both if needed.

  51. Dapostman Says:

7th round draft La’el Collins. Nevermind Joey Iosefa is still available. SMH.
