The Art Of The Deal

April 30th, 2018

Poker.

Friday, Joe brought word via Buffalo general manager Brandon Beane of how Beane worked out a trade with Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht Thursday night that netted the Bucs two extra second round picks, which Licht parlayed into another pick later on in the draft.

The Bucs began the draft with one first-round pick, a second and no third-round pick and ended up with one first round pick, two second round picks and a third round pick.

A big reason why is the trade Licht made with Beane.

Earlier today, Beane appeared on “One Bills Live” heard on WGR-AM 550 in Buffalo and offered more details on how the trade came together.

Pick No. “5 was a spot where I thought we could get a reasonable deal,” Beane said of Denver’s pick. “But five was a pick that was going to cost us [No.] 22. I had checked already with Indy and they said unless our guy (Quenton Nelson) was gone, they were picking. Tampa had said, ‘We have a guy,’ [but to give up the No. 7 pick] is going to take a lot.’ And Chicago had a guy.”

In other words, Licht had Beane by the family jewels. After talking to Denver and John Elway and knowing he was going nowhere with both Chris Ballard at Indianapolis and Ryan Pace with Chicago, Beane admitted he was scared he was going to lose Josh Allen.

So Beane began to talk turkey with Licht.

You can watch the interview below.

It’s called using “tact”. That’s what Jason Licht has and he won a lottery ticket in that trade.

quote: The Bucs began the draft with one first round pick, one second round pick and no third round pick and ended up with one first round pick, two second round picks and a third round pick.

It should read three second round picks.

I was just writing the same thing to Joe as well Mark. Great minds think alike 🙂

  4. Joe Says:

Yup. Got confused with math. Again.

Joe’s head often turns to ASJ when math is involved.

  5. Lord Cornelius Says:

Only the most vain arrogant I think I’m the best Scout in the History of Mankind person would have any big problems with this draft.

  6. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

Sounds like the Bucs would’ve taken Nelson if he was there. Was also interesting that on NFLN during the draft they said the Bucs were trying to leapfrog the Phins (presumably to draft Vea…I thought for sure MIA was going to take Vea to “replace” Suh)

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Wrong Joe…….A first round pick…..three seconds and a third…..not two.

Licht has a history of questionable moves up….(except Marpet)

I think he looks at the extra picks as bonus picks and somehow not as important as the regular picks….

I will say this…..it appears that Vea was his top choice at 7…..probably after one of the big three….he still had James on the board…..but nobody is considering that it may have been Ward or Minkah (already taken)

  8. Chris K Says:

Great job by Licht turning one pick into multiple picks. If he hits on 3 of the 4 top picks it’s gonna be one of our best drafts in team history, excluding the one where we landed both Sapp and Brooks in round 1. That draft may never be matched again.

  9. feelthepewterpower Says:

While the Bills didnt give up their number one pick(s)…they wound up giving Tampa Bay way more value than what the trade chart called for…Licht made off well, and it will be talked about for a long time if this trade becomes a springboard for tampa bay.

I think derwin was plan b or c….strong safety is devalued in today’s NFL.I knew James wouldn’t be the pick at seven. Free safety is the coveted position (even with Evans on our roster, id still pull the trigger.Fitz will be elite if used at FS.) Hard to know if they had Fitz slightly ahead of Vea, or Vea ahead of Fitz. They had to know the Raiders (who traded down) or Dolphins was in the market for a db…and that of the two, Vea would likely be there, and that they were fine/happy with that prospect that came to fruition.

    LC

    respectfully disagree.

  12. John meeks Says:

Great job jason, you done good in the draft!the man deserves credit for getting extra picks and getting cornerback help as well as Ronald Jones. He liked vita vea, I did not.however,Jason knows more than I do and I hope the guy is a beast!good job on rebuilding this team in 1 off season!very impressive job JL!

  13. Lord Cornelius Says:

    @DB55

I can understand hating some picks because that’s a given no matter what especially in the mid rounds but in general I can’t see thinking that getting Jason Pierre Paul, and 4 players in the top 56 at DT/RB/CB/CB – all in the relative range they were rated i.e. no reaches – plus an OG in the 3rd and a S in the 4th; when only having 4 total picks in the top 4 rounds to start with is just something I’d have signed up for months ago and not given a sh1t what players we took if it met all of that criteria lol

  14. USFBUC Says:

If the picks pan out then this draft will go down as one of our best. Licht also probably secured himself at least one more season regardless of the team’s record in 2018.

  15. Kobe Faker Says:

Hate to be negative nancy but….

Licht should have demanded what elway wanted before chubb handed in his hands

    #12, #22, and 2nd round pick

Buf beane was desparate and would have given in if licht was a better poker player

    Aka JBF paid poster

  16. FortMyersDave Says:

So it sounds like Denver had a deal of: their #5 for the 12 and 22. Bucs got the the #12, 53 and 56 for their #7. So which was actually better value? Jimmy Johnson’s chart gives a great edge to both Denver and Tampa and in fact Tampa got slightly better value as Johnson’s chart makes the 2 mid 2nd rounders equivalent to the number 21 overall. So my question: would Bucs fanes rather had the #22 in place of the two 2nds one which got the UNC CB and the other which was traded to NE for the #63 (CD Carlton) and a mid 4th rounder? There were still a lot of good players on the board at 22….

  17. Kobe Faker Says:

    Dave,

Im sure elway deal was #12,#22 and a 2nd rounder

Still a good trade but buffalo bean was desparate!!

  18. FortMyersDave Says:

Yeah Kobe, you never know until you ask! Remember how Lynch fleeced the Chicago GM to move up one spot in last year’s draft! Bills did have a pick at #65 as well, perhaps that was on the table for the Broncos but looking at what Beane said in the interview is that he was adamant his picks next year were off the table for both Tampa and Denver: “In the end, Buffalo general manager Brandon Beane surprised many. Not only did he make one trade in the first round, he made two. With the two moves, the Bills’ executive likely had a lot of discussions with potential trade partners.

A number of different assets were likely involved in a number of hypothetical trades, but according to Beane, there was one asset that was always off of the table: the team’s first-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.

“Two teams we spoke with were adamant about a one for next year and I’m like ‘No, I’m not giving you both one’s this year… a one this year’s draft, you know, the 22nd pick, is more valuable than a next year’s one, so I’m giving you more right there.’ It was off the table,” Beane said during an appearance on WGR 550 on Monday morning.”

So it sounds like Licht may have wanted something from 2019. You know unless Buffalo thinks they are gonna do a Brownie and get a top 10 pick next year why not use 2019 picks? Its almost as if Beane thought his 2019 first rounder was more valuable than the #22 this year and he seemed to value next year’s second rounder as well. Anyhow Licht did get value but perhaps Kobe is right,as Chicago was not dealing the Bucs could have squeezed them for a bit more…..

    ***************

So many posters on this site flipped out on me and said I was insane to say MONTHS AGO that Licht would either take one of the “Big 3” or trade down with the Bills for a King’s ransom … yet that is exactly what happened.

Licht won this draft and deserves to be commended for the work he put in.

It was friggin beautiful! He shouldve jumped in the pool!

As long as JW3 and Coach K (and the kicker) do their part this year, we’ll be close to playoffs or in them. Hopefully Coach Smith has learned from his mistakes and will get the proper guys in the right positions.

  21. NFLNut Says:

^ If we don’t win at least 9 games, coaches should be fired, period.

  22. lurker Says:

of course kobe does not know any of the conversations, nor any of us. but keep dreaming.
