Mayock Says It Is…

April 25th, 2018

Lone mock draft is in.

He has spoken.

Mike Mayock does one mock draft a year. It is often the night before the draft. And it is often one of the more accurate mocks each season. In fact, it is the only mock draft Joe puts any stock in.

Tonight on the NFL Network, Mayock had the Bucs selecting Florida State safety Derwin James.

When the Bucs pick at No. 7 tomorrow night, per Mayock, “The Big Three,” Penn State running back Saquon Barkley, North Carolina State defensive end Nick Chubb and Notre Dame guard Quenton Nelson are all off the board.

The surprise, if you will, is Mayock has the Broncos selecting Nelson.

Make of this what you wish.

All-you-can-eat buffet available starting at 6 p.m. and runs all night long. Be there!! Joe and Ira Kaufman will be in the house with the Stick Carriers and The Commish. Raw energy and Bucs love everywhere.

We’d be lucky to have James.

  2. Bj Says:

    Bradley Chubb** I got you

  3. buc'd up Says:

Surprisingly Mayock has been one of the more accurate draft analysts, this data going back over the past 5 years. Hopefully it plays out tomorrow.

  4. Snookman Says:

    Bradly chubb

  5. Joel Says:

All of those 3 are definitely off the board by #7. Don’t be surprised if James is gone too. The QBs are overhyped by the media.

  6. Dewey Selmon Says:

James, RB rd 2, and CB falls to us RD 4. or vice verse.

  7. MadMax Says:

    (repost from other article)

I dont know, dont like it that much, not at 7. I know of some Panther fans who want him and its possible they trade up to 6 instead of buffalo to get him, then we can wheel and deal with buffalo….thats the best scenario I see for us if Barkley and Chubb are gone at 7.

  8. Gambelero Says:

If it’s a no trade mock, then it’s totally ridiculous. I think the gurus are petrified of this year’s draft. Thus, they restrict themselves to no-trade mocks so they can say, “well the trades changed everything” when they’re totally wrong.

  9. Gambelero Says:

So, he did include one trade. He expects Rosen to fall to 15. No way. Rosen won’t even be QB4.

  10. Gambelero Says:

He expects Rosen to fall to 15. No way. Rosen won’t even be QB4. He does have a Bills move-up.

  11. Ben the GA Buc Says:

Yahhhhh … Michel and Guice off the board in the first round in this mock. Michel to the Stillers? Ouch.

  12. RAS Says:

Last year he mocked us Malik Hooker , and the year before that Leonard Flyod so I take what he says with a grain of salt.

  13. SteveK Says:

    RAS,

Two years ago we traded back with da Bears 🐻 and they took Leonard Floyd with that pick. So magical was right on with Floyd’s slot. Malik Hooker went before us last year, thus pushing OJ Boward down the board.

    No one saw Howard dropping.

Let’s hipe Quentin Nelson is there at 7, or we kick it into trade back mode. Barkley and Chubb will be long gone.

  14. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Damn, everyone seems to think James. Ugh! Way too high for a safety that doesn’t even have good film. If they go safety I really hope it’s Fitzpatrick.

  15. donuts Says:

Mike Florio has the same thing. Denver picking Nelson and we get James.

I hope not; he is a bust at 7….way too high. We did that once with Hargraeves already. Did he not learn anything?

  16. Pa Privateer Says:

the draft will go nothing lie anyone expects tomorrow.

There is going to be multiple trades in the top 10 picks

  17. MadMax Says:

Im still all about trading down and drafting Vita or Landry, then hopefully one of the 4 rb’s or even Big Will if he makes it past the first (doubtful).

If we can recover a 3rd and still want a safety, then grab Jessie Bates, then CB Nick Nelson

    Dline
    RB or Oline
    Safety
    CB

then if Shaquim Griffin is still there in the 5th? Oh yeah, all over it!!! (again, doubtful)

  18. MadMax Says:

I’d actually rather have Roquan Smith over James if we have to pick between the two @7…..who knows how Beckwith will play after recovering from breaking his ankle in that wreck or how long it will take….

  19. ManzielMadness Says:

If a good trade back offer comes through take it… pick Vea, rebuild the trenches, if one of the top 4 QBs fall I think it’ll be josh Allen, Rosen goes early.

  20. Greecosuave Says:

“Stay off the WeeeeeeeeeeeeeEEEEEDDDDDDDDDD!” Stephen A Smith

He actually got his own show for this. I don’t think so Bucs fans. Stay tuned

  21. Pa Privateer Says:

I have arguments to this Mock Draft:

1: No way in hell Steelers take RB Michel with Leveon Bell on their roster.

Steelers draft OL in the first round. They have a need for OG and Hernandez or Wynn will be their pick. If it isn’t OL it will be CB.

2: Why would the Bills trade into the #6 when they can wait and trade into the #7 for less cost?

3: Cards and everyone else will have to trade up for a QB this year.

4: Giants cannot wait to draft a QB next year. When you are at the top of the draft and QB is a future need, YOU PICK A QB!!!!!!!

  22. Onebadbuc58 Says:

Minkah Fitzpatrick is a no brainer! He has way better highlights than d. James!

  23. Easy Says:

I could cre less who he mocks to us. I hope Licht has better judgement than this

  24. Eric Says:

    I’d be really disappointed if
that’s the pick. One year wonder with knee injury history and bad film to match. Basically a work out wonder who doesn’t wanna workout.
Hmmmm…..maybe he doesnt trust that surgically repaired knee as much a the FSU faithful do. I’d take Fitzpatrick over him and could live with the puck because I believe he can play as a big outside corner and at worst a pro bowl safety
James is limited to SS so heck no! I personally would take Vea and solidify the defensive line if we cant trade out. Injecting some youth with freakish qualities is a good way to plan for life after McCoy. For now thought imagine being a quarterback while facing JPP, McCoy, Vea, and Curry starting with Spence, Gholston, Allen, Unrein, and Stevie T

  25. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The only place where any of these mockers know what they are doing is in the men’s room…..and I’m not certain of that.

The only thing that is certain is that we either make a pick at 7 or we trade.

  26. OneBucPerson Says:

Denver is not going to take Nelson at 5, they have plenty of quality Guards right now and are clearly going to take a QB. One of the big 3 is falling to us and I would rather take one of them over James, hell I’d rather trade back then take James at 7.

  27. Jason Mclaurin Says:

I told you Joe that D. James will be the pick the whole time now the guy you put all your waiting stock in M. Mayock and he even told you. Priorities Joe, priorities man. You sat for the last three months selling this fan base on a fantasy fall. Even the Colts playing you for a fool now saying they drafting R. Smith. They are not drafting R. Smith over Barkley trust me this is no fantasy. Im kidding on the Colts mindset of wanting to fool the Bucs or keep us honest but don’t bite that bait on R. Smith the Colts will snag Barkley and Tampa probably more than likely gets that trade offer from Buffalo for the kings ransom of two first round picks to beat the Patriots and Dolphins to Baker Mayfield. That’s why we get the trade from the Bills. Mayfield is gonna get on the phone and force the Bills to trade up for him I’m almost certain Mayfield is a diva like that and his agent will be a diva the same way and beg a team to trade up for him. He would probably fall and a trade down is risky on our end but I feel we would still get Derwin James at #12 and I think Licht will feel the same way by the time we draft tomorrow night as well. They will trade down and it looks likely or imminent shall I say with the Bills they deperately want a QB in the words of Jason Licht and Dave Gettleman said at the Orlando meetings. The Bills front office formerly of the Panthers might I add seems more than willing to do business with the Bucs it just comes down to the Bucs and Licht believing our man D. James will hang from 7-12 which would be the deal. I doubt three DBs go in the next four slots from #8 to #12 but it’s a strong feeling two will go and James could be one of em but he’s not rated higher than Fitzpatrick who will also be available because I feel the bears go with Ward at #8 or V. Vea and the 49ers will probably go with D. Ward or D. Guice. John Lynch is a smart man and I’m of the mind he has his eyes on J. Bates to fill their safety void or they could get Fitzpatrick who I feel fits them and safety need a lil bit more, but I seen some reports and it doesn’t seem they are interested in D. James at #9,but if they select Fitzpatrick then look for the Raiders to take either Smith or Fitzpatrick, but I think the Cardinals maybe look to move up as well with the Raiders who don’t value their pick at 10 anyway and could profit from a trade down with the Cardinals. Look for D. Guice, M. Fitzpatrick, R. Smith V. Vea to all go before D. James if we trade down to #12 plus we would still have a another first round pick and another QB needy team to hustle with two first round picks but this time sell trading down to the Patriots for their two first round picks. Let’s make some moves Bucs

  28. Pa Privateer Says:

If the Colts pass on Nelson at #6 that GM will get fired. Andrew Luck has not been healthy for 2 seasons!!!!!

    Step 1: get a QB
    Step 2: Protect the QB
    Step 3: Kill the QB
    Step 4: Weapons for QB

The Colts need to protect the QB

  29. catcard202 Says:

There’s a reason Mayock is on NFL TV, instead running a NFL FO.

  30. destinjohnny Says:

I think the trade back option will be there for us

  31. Joe Says:

1: No way in hell Steelers take RB Michel with Leveon Bell on their roster.

How long? A week, a month, a year? Bell still has not signed his tender. He can still be traded at any time.

If the Steelers draft Sony Michel, Licht better be on the phone to Kevin Colbert ASAP.

  32. Garv Says:

It’s still a MOCK draft. That means it’s still a FAKE draft consisting of guesses. IMO it still comes down to this, either 4 QB’s go before the Bucs pick and we get one of the big three (Chubb, Barkley or Nelson or the Bucs will have a good opportunity to trade down. But if one of the big three is there the Bucs HAVE to take that player!

I think that player is Nelson and would be ecstatic if the Bucs got him.

  33. NFLNut Says:

    Mike’s mock was solid enough

  34. NFLNut Says:

    ***************

The biggest surprise to me was Rosen sliding to #15 … I really don’t see that happening.

I’ve got the top 4 QBs going in the first 6 picks and 5 QBs in the first 15 picks.

I’d honestly be pretty shocked if the Bucs don’t have a shot at drafting one, or even two of the “Big 3” players

HOWEVER, if the Bucs have to “settle” for Derwin James, I’m not going to be upset as the kid is a monster and could have a Troy Polamalu like impact and career for the Bucs!

    ***************

  35. NFLNut Says:

^ JOE IS SPOT ON WITH THE ABOVE COMMENT IMHO

Lev Bell is great and all but he’s threatened to sit out until week 10 in the past, has been dinged for drugs in the past, gets hurt now and then, and IF the Steelers don’t trade him before the season, this season is almost assuredly going to be his last season in the Steel City, so drafting an all-purpose back like Lev makes a lot of sense.

That said, I would be a little surprised if they drafted a RB in the first round if they don’t plan to trade Lev … drafting a guy like Royce Freeman in the 4th might make more sense … but for all we know, the Steelers are hoping they can get Michel so they can trade Lev before the season starts for a decent draft pick, rather than just have him for one more year and watch him walk out the door leaving them with nothing after next season.

  36. Gambelero Says:

So, after reading your post the other night, and then seeing the pointed clarification, “if the big three are gone,” with an implied, “and there’s no tradedown,” I can rest a lot easier. The idea that we would take James at 7 over one of the Three…

  37. Kobe Faker Says:

    Steelers drafting runningback round 1?

    Lol

They need defense. Their leader stud shazier needs to be replaced. They drafted the runningback from pitt panther s last year they really like

    Yikes mike the maroon

    Pathetic mock…rosen at #15???? Lol

  38. firethecannons Says:

    Jason–too much
You write so much-what for–none of us including Joe want to read this much material–stop it–summarize

Like this: No fok way do fok mock James

  39. mark2001 Says:

Jaboo…we will have a new GM and Coaching staff if we choose James.

  40. LargoBuc Says:

Didn’t Mayock have us taking a safety last year too? Malik Hooker. And msny, myself included, were beyond hyped.
If it is James that would be cool. I personally prefer Ward if the big 3 are gone tho.

  41. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Most of the Mock Drafts think the Bucs will take James.

    So clearly…we won’t.

  43. Jarhead Says:

You guys better start getting used to the idea of us taking Derwin James. I prefer us trade down like most, but if the big 3 are gone and we don’t have a trade partner…..Derwin James will be the pick.

  44. Jarhead Says:

    Bonzai, you don’t like Wynn???

  45. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    A dose of reality:
Mike Mayock was once considered the most accurate mock draft guy around. But…

In 2017, he successfully predicted 4 of 32 first round picks.

So no…I don’t buy it. He went off the rails from the second pick forward.

  46. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    @Jarhead
I think if we don’t get Nelson, we won’t get a guard…but I like Will Hernandez so I added him to the list.

  47. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I’m usually Mr. Positive but it’s hard for me to get excited about a DB at #7.

If it’s James or Minkah I can only say I expect them to be the second coming of Jalen Rose. If they do for us what Rose has done for the Jags then I’m fine with the pick. Anything less it’s not a good pick.

It takes a special athlete to be a difference maker at Safety. Are James or Minkah that special?
