Kemoko Turay & The Bucs

April 27th, 2018

Suppose the Buccaneers grab their cornerback and running back with two of their first three picks in tonight’s second round.

Then what?

Film guru Lance Zierlein has a clear thought. The college film guru and the son of longtime NFL offensive line coach and ex-Marine Larry Zierlein sees Tampa Bay pouncing on physical specimen/project defensive end Kemoko Turay from Rutgers, via his second-round mock draft at NFL.com

Turay stands 6-5, 253 pounds and he can fly. Think a bigger a faster Noah Spence.

Turay has a quite a story. He was born in Africa and played one year of high school football and led New Jersey in sacks with 18.5. He evolved at Rutgers into an every down player. Joe’s ready stories about how intelligent and coachable Turay, and about how scouts drool over his upside.

Joe would be good with Turay in this spot, assuming the Bucs have him rated as a second-rounder.

New defensive line coach Brentson Buckner is supposed to be a guru, and you can’t have too many pass rushers. Plus, Turay sounds like he’d be a terror on special teams.

I’m cool with that if we hit on RB/CB. Would love Austin Corbert or Braden Smith there though to finish the O-line.

Also for anyone who thinks Vea can’t rush the passer or disrupt a pocket; he had more sacks and passes defended than Daron Payne & Taven Bryan combined over the last 2 seasons.

And those guys played on better D-lines and likely weren’t being triple / double teamed as often.

But yeah running a 5.1 40 vs a 5.64 40 means absolutely nothing apparently and we got Danny Shelton 2.0

    lol.

  2. Guzzie Says:

I’m cool with Turay or another DE last 2nd or 4th pick, Jpp and Curry are 29

  3. Wesley Says:

We need a lot more safeties and corners.

  4. Atlanta Buc Says:

What happened to all the talk about the D-End speed pass rusher from Oklahoma, Okoronkwo that the Bucs seemed to love earlier in the process? He also makes great sense in the second, but will probably go very early. Another cost saving rookie insurance policy if free agent Curry doesn’t work out for us.

  5. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

    Ehh,

Bucs still would have holes/bigger needs at OG, OT, and S.

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

He’s projected to go in round 3-5. I would certainly hope they don’t have a 2nd round grade on him & there are 10 DEs ranked above him…..probably would be a good 4th round pick.

  7. BucNole Says:

    Ummmm no, just no
We have to address the OL in the 2nd too!!!!!!!
The DL will be fine for now its about the OL baby!!!

  8. Robert Says:

    We need a QB!!!!

wat we gun du wen crab legs mcgee get’s booted from the league?

  9. Buc2015 Says:

I know “you can never have too many pass rushers”, but ….. don’t we have four defensive ends that we’re committed to, financially and otherwise, this season? JPP, Curry, Spence, Gholston. We need a fifth? Going to permanently bench one of those four? I think it needs to be CB, RB, S, OL before another DE.

  10. Atlanta Buc Says:

    TBaybucfan,

That would be great if he fell that far, hopefully. I do Love Hernandez the guard with our 1st second rounder, especially if the RB we want is gone. Another major cap helper if we have to cut loose Sweezy.

  11. 813bucboi Says:

imo, we need to fill the OG/OT and DE with those first 2 picks…..continue the offseason trend……

    will hernandez
    conner Williams
    arden key

cut sweezy and sign cj Anderson or eric reid…..draft bo scarbrough late along with kevin toliver or tony brown…..let benenoch battle it out with the rookies…..

nasty front 7 will make our current secondary look great!!!!!

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!

  12. Marine Buc Says:

We need CB, OT/OG, RB and SS. I like the Vea pick but we desperately need a corner back followed by offensive line help at guard\tackle. Running back and safety are also needed but not a priority at this point.

  13. Atlanta Buc Says:

    Buc2015,

I don’t see any real outside speed rush DE’s on our roster other than Spence, who has a bad shoulder. You can never have enough speed! Lesser quality DBs coverage needed, if we have it.

  14. MadMax Says:

Lance also has us picking up Connor Williams since Big Will and Chubb are gone (im good with that)….then he has us picking Guice with that middle pick (also good with that)

Then we need Jessie Bates or Shaq Griffin or this guy, Turay….thanks, more film study….need another DE though and he’s way under the radar.

  15. Robert Says:

we need a QB, hopefully they can get Mike Glennon back

  16. Pickgrin Says:

If Jason Licht can manage to identify and draft 3 starters that will match or exceed the expectations of their draft position – today could really be a turning point for this franchise.

We need RB, CB and either Safety, OG/OT or DE out of these three 2nd rd picks in whatever order gets us the best players and value.

    OG- Hernandez
    RB – Guice
    CB – Josh Jackson

There’s 3 players that all carried mid to late 1st rd grades by most all draft pundits – yet are still available heading into the 2nd rd.

5 picks in front of us. Might one of those 3 be available at #38?
    Fingers crossed.

If not – then there’s a pretty good chance that Nick Chubb will be there. Chubb would be my pick at #38 if he’s there and the above 3 are off the board.

Here are other players that I like for the Bucs with these 3 second round picks depending on how things fall and which position gets the 38th pick.

    CB – Isiah Oliver (CO)
    CB – Donte Jackson (LSU)
    CB – Carlton Davis (Auburn)

RB – Ronald Jones II (USC)
    RB – Kerryon Juhnson (Auburn)

    S – Justin Reid (Stanford)
    S – Ronnie Harrison (Bama)
S – Terrell Edmunds (Va Tech)

    OT – Orlando Brown (OK)
    OT – Brian O’Neill (Pitt)
    OG – Braden Smith (Auburn)
    OT/OG/C – Austin Corbett (Nevada)

    DE – Harold Landry (BC)
DE – Sam Hubbard (Ohio St)
    DE – Josh Sweat (FSU)

  18. Robert Says:

we’re talking about licht, the guy who drafted a kicker in round 2, can’t count his draft picks

not like the chucky days anyway when we were contenders. now it’s all crab legs and patrol cars 🙁

  19. Robert Says:

is he about to stomp that guy in the pic above????? what kind of character is that????? what happened to help a brotha up?

  20. MadMax Says:

Another good vid, highlight plus interview

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Cj7AJPWDak

liking this guy, he gets busy.

  21. MadMax Says:

@robert, he’s stepping over him, my gosh, chill ya dang snowflake!

  22. JimmyJack Says:

The one thing we know about Licht is that he stays true to his big board. At least it seems that way.

You just wonder how much Lichts board resembles Bucs fans boards. Most Buc fans would have Hernandez,Guice, J.Jackson & Laundry close to the top of their boards.

I’m hoping for another BIG player. Hernandez is my biggest hope

  23. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Pickgrin

Nice work. I agree with your approach. We should come out of tonight with a significantly improved team…much as New Orleans did last year with a big draft.

    GO BUCS!

  24. Lord Cornelius Says:

@Pickgrin I feel like you’re reading my mind with that breakdown.

Edmunds the S went in R1 though to the Steelers but otherwise that’s perfect imo although I’m not high on Josh Sweat. Would rather go Duke Ejiofor or Obgonnia or whatever his name is lol

I’m so stoked for tonight. May the draft gods be kind

  25. MadMax Says:

@Lord C, hows you music and band coming along?

  26. Mike Johnson Says:

These next 3 picks will be a chess game. They luv Hernandez on the O line. But he might not be there. I think the Bucs want to DB with the next pick. But if there is a RB they really want and he is still there? They grab him.

  27. MadMax Says:

Man, the more I look at Connor Williams, and knowing Dotson’s days are unfortunately numbered, and knowing Big Will is gone when we pick……Williams first on day 2 for us? Looks good. Then Guice….or Guice then Williams. Needs, and talent at needs met. Then Turay with that last 2nd.

  28. teacherman777 Says:

Ade Aruna from Tulane has the same story!

African immigrants who come to America are tearing it up in 1 generation!

Kamara from Liberia, jude Adjeh-Barimah from Ghana, Ziggy Ansah from Ghana, and many NFL players from Nigeria alone.

I lived in Morocco or 6 years researching African immigration through Morocco to Europe.

When my Nigerian, Senegalese, Liberian, Malian, and Ghanian friends discovered I was from America, they couldn’t believe I left!

Thood luckey ALL dream of coming to America. No joke.

So, when they come, they are HUNGRY!!!!

Good luck to this guy Turay and Ade Aruna! The next Ziggy Ansahs!

    The key?

    They played SOCCER growing up!

    Like Suh!!

@joe- good story, now write one on Ade Aruna.

  29. teacherman777 Says:

*They ALL dream of coming to America.

  30. Pickgrin Says:

LC – yea – scratch Edmunds.

I would rather see us bolster the Oline instead of Safety or DE – but aside from HAVING to pick a good CB and needing to pick a good RB it really becomes a question of player value vs positional need.

Licht is all about value and BPA and sticking to his board (thankfully) so its really going to come down to who is available when and how the Bucs have these players rated.

Regarding the Ends – Landry and Sweat both have the one thing that can’t be coached. SPEED! and lots of it – Sweat especially. When is the last time you heard of a 255 lb edge rusher running a 4.53 40?? That was Mike Evans 40 time – LOL

We are in pretty decent shape with traditional 1st and 2nd down 4-3 ends atm w/ JPP, Curry and Gholston. Now add the relative speed of Noah Spence and the extreme speed of Landry or Sweat coming off the edges to that mix on passing down (with Via and McCoy creating serious push up the middle) – and the Bucs go from having one of the weakest DLines in the league – to one of the best – in ONE offseason…

  31. thespiritof1976 Says:

Shaq Griffin. He can play multiple positions and be the ultimate defensive floater. LB, Edge, SS.

  32. Robert Says:

our defense is already a floater

  33. Dave from the ROCK Says:

With the middle now clogged up front … we need to shut down the back end middle and draft a SS. Got to be able to stuff the run from that spot … like Johnny Lynch was able to do. RB will be addressed in the 2nd and probably 5th round. CB/OL after that.

  34. Marine Buc Says:

@ Robert – shhhhhh. The adults are speaking.

  35. Bird Says:

Shaq griffin. That would be fun. He could fill 2 needs. Hybrid.

Strong safety on run defense. Edge linebacker that rushes the qb too on passing downs.

    He ran a dang 4.38

    Ucf stud.

  36. jmarkbuc Says:

Robert GMac is the “help the guy up” member of our team…have you been living under a rock

  37. Rrsrq Says:

Chad Thomas with the 3rd second round pick

  38. Not there yet Says:

Bucs need two corners a safety, running back, guard or tackle if Caleb can truly move inside. With will gholdston on the roster taking up space I just see it as a wasted pick this year, don’t have time to develop a guy with this type of depth they should be in win now mode.

I think they need more than one corner for backup and injuries they will suffer trying to guard the receivers in our division. We don’t do so well with late picks and udfa’s.

  39. DBAG56 Says:

way too small, we tried small DEs with no success. 280+ with decent speed and more than one freakin’ move. Not sure why Bucs can’t figure out how to draft a good DE, hopefully Buckner helps the scouting department.

  40. Joeypoppems Says:

OG, CB, DE/SS. Thats what I want to see addressed tonight. Trade into the 3rd for a RB if one is sliding. They have the resources to do it.

  41. Rod Munch Says:

Bucs need corners, with an ‘s’, as well as a starting safety, they need to address that before worrying about anything else. They have 3 picks in the 2nd and if they have any sense they’ll get two corners and a safety.

  42. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Robert,

This is a big boy conversation.

  43. German Buc Says:

Robert, what ’bout looking for another team to “cheer” for?

  44. SOEbuc Says:

No Hernandez= Braden Smith or Connor Williams in the second (if there-4 QBs in the top 10). This dude does look sick, but DBAG56 is right. Too small. Maybe if we ran a 3-4. After Hernandez/Williams/Smith, CB and Jessie Bates in the second. Mark Walton in the fourth and sign C.J. Anderson. Barber, Anderson, and Walton could turn into a sick ass RB rotation.

  45. Papa578 Says:

Hey Robert, back in the cooler, the temperature is nearing 80 degrees! Geez, be happy will ya?! Our team has improved big time and there are more improvements forthcoming. Where in the he!! do some of you cats come from?..

  46. Pistol Pete Says:

    Today
    1 Guice or Chubb
    2 Braden Smith
    3 Shaq Griffin

  47. John meeks Says:

Rod munch, exactly! We need to fix the backend of the defense!you are today’s winner of a brand new bottle of fine Jack Daniels whiskey!ding ding ding ding ding!Rod munch, come on down!

  48. MadMax Says:

@Rod and John Meeks…..please tell me you realize that D line and pass rush directly affects our DB’s. We were last in that area last year in case you didnt know. (i know you knew that Rod)

  49. passthebuc Says:

Fine, grab Hernandez, a CB and the project. I’m fine with waiting on the running back. Remember there is still another RB FA out there.

    https://www.nfl.com/prospects/kemoko-turay%20?id=32462018-0002-5599-9667-00031057c4e6

“Shoulder injuries and subsequent surgeries ravaged his sophomore and junior seasons”

“Rigid pass rusher with tight hips”

A few of the negatives on this guy concern me enough to bypass in round 2… Maybe worth a look in round 3-4.

  51. Lou. Says:

    Linebacker warning.

Seems Licht is building the D from front to back and Smitty has his large DTsckles. Bucs are being built to be a multiple defense, shifting in and out of a 3/4. But that takes more LBs on a roster.

I expect we will see a LB pick this round.

Not a need anyone talks about but will be a need if the D transitions.
