When You Don’t Need A Quarterback

April 27th, 2018

You may thank America.

In the NFL, especially in the 21st century, a team that doesn’t have a quarterback is an NFL gerbil.

A team without a quarterback spins the gerbil wheel over and over again and doesn’t move an inch. And until a team finds a quarterback, that wheel just keeps on spinning.

And it is because of this that Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht undressed Buffalo for three prime draft picks last night, two of which are in tonight’s second round..

That gave the Bucs, who began the draft with just two picks through the first two rounds, a grand total of four through the first two rounds.

Buffalo hasn’t had a decent quarterback since Jim Kelly played in western New York. J.P. Loseman, EJ Manuel and three-plays, 75-yards Tyrod Taylor proved to be garbage quarterbacks who could only be trusted to hand the ball off.

Unless they played Mike Smith’s defense.

Buffalo spent a lot of draft capital to move to No. 12 in the draft order. And when two of the top quarterbacks began falling in the draft, and the Bucs were on the clock at No. 7, Licht knew he had had Buffalo right where he wanted them.

Buffalo was desperate and had already spent a lot to position themselves to draft a QB. The Bills couldn’t leave the stage Friday without a quarterback so Licht was able to fleece the them — and still get the man he wanted.

All this happened because the Bucs already have a franchise quarterback, and the Bills didn’t. It was beautiful how Licht worked over Buffalo.

Thank you, Jameis!

Licht, in so many words, made Buffalo squeal.

Sad part is the Bucs haven’t made many teams “squeal” when it comes to the regular season scoreboard….

  2. Buc4life Says:

Now with 3 picks this would let’s make things happen. If we could somehow get Guice, Hernandez and a cornerback it would be great.

  3. The Buc Realist Says:

I will thank him when the Bucs start drafting at the bottom consistently!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

This happened because the Browns (stupidly) passed on Chubb…..

And, what happened to all the ” the teams below us don’t need a QB so nobody will trade up with us” crowd? I have been saying all along….teams can’t gamble waiting for their pick to drop.

To move from 7-12 and get two 2nd round pick for it is fantastic…..this made our draft…..we will get three great players of need in the 2nd….and now we don’t miss losing our 3rd so much.

Having all these high draft picks will mean we have cheaper players for 4 years balancing out our expensive players….will be easier on the cap.

  5. Demetre Says:

It was a good trade for both teams. Yes, Buffalo had to pay a premium because of their QB situation but kept their other 1st round pick. Fortunately it worked out for us. Licht did well with the trade but now needs to hit on all three of the next picks. There is a history of poor choices in this round and this will make or break Licht”s future here.

  6. Wausa Says:

    Well said Joe.
I wanted us to draft Derwin James(still think he’s going to be a stud in the NFL). However, I love the mindset of turning a weakness into a strength and that’s exactly what the Bucs have done.
They have turned the worst defensive line in the NFL into one of the best.

Hey Realist, I don’t agree with a fair amount of your posts and generally think that you are overly full of yourself, but you seem to have some kind of Juju going on with predicting the picks.

So could you predict that we’ll be able to draft Isiah Oliver at #38 and Will Hernandez at #53. Please and thank you.

  8. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

    @Wausa

Easy now, I am a huge fan of the additions we’ve made to the Dline, but until they prove it on the field it’s all just potential.

A rock sitting on a hillside has potential, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to roll.

  9. feelthepewterpower Says:

Bills actually had a good first round. They still kept their other first pick and got Edmunds who will be great. Allen is in the mold of Wentz but it is much more of a project. Happy with the Buccs adding more picks and Vea, however!

  10. Joeypoppems Says:

Im curious what other people think about this. What would you guys think if they draft an Edge rusher in the 2nd round?

Like if Harold Landry is still on the board at #38? Or Josh Sweat at #56? Obviously it depends on who else is available, but I think it would be a smart move.

    Will Hernandez
    Josh Jackson
    DE/SS

Thats what Im hoping for in round 2.

    @Joeypoppems

I’m pining for Isiah Oliver and Will Hernandez, if they want to take a flyer on an Athletic DT project at #56, I’m more than ok with that, but would prefer a RB.

  13. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

    “…an Athletic *DE* project…”

  14. lambchop Says:

    @TampaBayBucFan,

It would have been a moot point had the Browns not reached for Denzel at 4. Bills and Broncos had a handshake deal for a trade until Ward went 4 and Chubb fell in Elway’s lap. There would have been no trade for the 7th pick had that not happened.

Thank you Cleveland for yet again being Cleveland. Denzel will ultimately help them, but it was at a poor spot. How do you not end up with one of the Big 3 with 2 picks in the first 4 picks?

  15. FLBoyInDallas Says:

His full legal name is Tevita Tuliakiono Tuipuloto Mosese Va’hae Faletau Vea.

Vita is short for his first name Tevita.

    No kidding. That’s his name.

  16. Buc believer Says:

Now let’s hope he doesn’t blow it by drafting in the second round a kicker a holder and a long snapper in that order!

  17. Chris Says:

Jameis keeps baking turnovers we sure will need one.

  18. El_Buc941 Says:

Go get Guice with the first pick of the 2nd round and then DE and CB with the next 2! Our situation sure worked out great! We traded our 3rd round pick and ended up with 2 more second rounders!now Licht doesn’t have to wait till the 3rd round to get his guys because he can go 3 more in the 2nd! It’s a great day to be a Bucs fan! Let’s see how well offensive lines guard McCoy and Vea! Those 2 will create the pressure up the middle and JPP and Curry can sweep the outsides for the kill because if the QB tries to run off we have Kwon and Lavonte waiting for him on the outside! And now that we have depth at the DL position we can bring the pressure all 4 quarters instead of the usual 3!

  19. Aaron Says:

Just want to give a shout out to the Browns! I knew they were going to go away from Chubb at 4!

I will thank him when the Bucs start drafting at the bottom consistently!!!!!!!!!

that’s on the coaches!!!!!!!……the reason why we were slotted #7 this year was because of the coaches not licht!!!!!!……if the coaches were competent, we’d be in good shape…..

if we start picking at the bottom, i’ll thank the HC….whoever he is….lol….

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!!…..GO BUCS!!!!!!

  21. 813bucboi Says:

I cant believe the browns screwed up yet again…..lol…..this is Johnny football and Justin gilbert all over again!!!!!….lol….

    they should’ve gotten chubb #1 and rosen#4…..or allen….but Mayfield….hahahahaha!!!!!….lol….

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!

  22. BringBucsBack Says:

Don’t trade up!! Stay-pat Licht, you do better that way!

  23. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Tonight’s going to be fun! I don’t care which order they get them, I’ll trust Licht, Spytek and the boys to have done their homework properly. I’d like to get a starting CB, RB, OL in whichever order Licht finds the best athletes.

I’d love to see us draft Will Hernandez but it wouldn’t shock me if we took a tackle instead of a guard and kicked Bennenoch inside to guard … Orlando Brown is a monster RT that might fall all the way to our #56 pick and a guy who could not only be a perfect replacement for Dotson in 2019 but could even beat him out and start this season
