Mr. Beasting Bounced

March 17th, 2018

Gone.

This is a bit surprising to Joe.

It seems the Bucs have released “Mr. Beasting,” Robert Ayers. That’s the word from Jenna Laine of ESPN who brings word Ayers is out with the Bucs.

So a guy who busts his tail and can actually put some pressure on a quarterback but a highly-paid one-dimensional defensive end like Will Gholston who can’t come within a zip code of a quarterback remains?

Joe mentioned yesterday, just based on evidence, the Bucs simply do not value an edge rush. Some 12 years is amole evidence

Vinny Curry? I like this move a lot!

  2. CalBucsFan Says:

Ayers gone, Curry in. Love it!

  3. Bucsfan1988 Says:

Bucs signed Curry! 3 year deal up to $27 million!!!

  4. Eric2706 Says:

Could’ve kept both. Ayers plays inside as well. Would’ve loved to see ayers, curry, McCoy, spence on 3rd down.

I think if he would’ve silenced baker early in the year he may still be here as a locker room attidue and glue guy. It shocked me to learn he never checked baker. He was supposed to be the hard working tough vet.

  5. K_Bassuka Says:

He’s gone yet Sweezy still has a job. Gotta love it.

  6. LakeLand Says:

Vinny Curry is another Will Gholston

But he did have that one good season a few years ago

  7. darin Says:

Wow. Yeah you’re right Joe. I dont get it. Of course people will say he didnt get sacks etc etc. He by far got the most pressures of anyone on this team. Not in position to jettison a guy like that. Or they are. Now they dont even want the other qb pressured. Maybe they feel chubb is gona be there at 7 now. Or maybe like you said, they could care less about sacking the qb. I could see cutting him IF they were in cap trouble or When they found someone better. Not today tho.

  8. Joeypoppems Says:

Wish him the best of luck. I guess not enough room for him and Curry?

  9. Rrsrq Says:

    ^^^^
    What K_Bassuka said

  10. Bucsfan1988 Says:

Eric, I read somewhere that Ayers & Baker were close friends. That’s why nothing was done from his end.

  11. SteveK Says:

    Good luck, Ayers!

    Welcome, Curry?

  12. El_Buc941 Says:

BUC THIS SPIT!!!!IM TIRED OF THIS OFFSEASONS MOVES BY THE FRONT OFFICE!GO BIG OR GO HOME!you can’t really on no name players that aren’t even know in their home town!and then again you don’t wanna pay the guys that prove why they belong in this league.TAMPA HAD AND STILL HAS THE CAP SPACE TO SPEND BIG! APPARENTLY THEY SAID,”might as well have no defensive end position on this roster if we plan on going with the same ppl into 2018.BUC IT!it’s not possible that even THE CLEVAND BROWNS ARE DOING BIIIIG THINGS IN FREE AGENCY!

  13. darin Says:

Oh Curry signed I see you guys saying. Now I kinda get it, but I’d have kept him until I saw how the draft shook out. Glad they got Curry. Not sure if he is an upgrade tho. We will find out.

  14. Joel Says:

Ayers hasn’t done much of anything in Tampa other than talk.

  15. AKick'nTheBucNuts Says:

Played his last in the NFL. No one will take him.

  16. SteveK Says:

    Curry is an upgrade!

Now cut Sweezy and sign somebody else!

  17. Waterboy Says:

Bucs avoided the 1 mil roster bonus and his big salary. They may still bring him back on a cheaper contract. I like the Vinny Curry signing.

  18. JimmyJack Says:

Never thought Ayers was all that good. I’m all for making wholesale changes on the line. Getting younger and rotate.

  19. Andrew H. Says:

News breaks slow here. Curry signed…stupid fans here freaking out before seeing the facts. Sometimes I think we have some of the least intelligent fans in the league.

Some of you know your stuff, kudos.

  20. DB55 Says:

So let me get this straight you can’t swing a trade for Michael Bennett a 5th and a 7th but you can pay Vinny bumass curry 11.5 garuntee AND cut Ayers?!?! WHOA WTF IS GOING ON HERE!?!?!

You pay Jensen 11 mil but Mike Pouncey still available?

If he selects a linebacker at #7 he can complete the tri-fecta

  21. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

“but a highly-paid one-dimensional defensive end like Will Gholston who can’t come within a zip code of a quarterback remains?”

Will Gholston still has guaranteed money on the books for this season. They aren’t going to cut someone they absolutely have to pay.

  22. LakeLand Says:

Vinny Curry refused to take a pay cut in Philly. Derek Barnett had beat him at the DE position opposite Brandon Graham. I don’t think he’s worth 3 years $27 million. I think him and Will Gholston are overpaid.

  23. Bird Says:

You all complain about not getting guys. Blah bla blah.

Never said anything good about ayers and they bring in a new guy cause change is needed to replace ayers.

And still not good enough. From what I hear , philly hated to let him go.

  24. LakeLand Says:

Philly hated to let him go. But they wasn’t going to overpay to keep him.

  25. William Says:

Love it. Wish Ayers the best but he’s damaged goods.

  26. DB55 Says:

Or you could keep Ayers at 5 mil and pay Blount his 4.5 mil and boom playoff hunt automatically

  27. Tbbucs3 Says:

Don’t understand why Licht keeps wasting money on these mediocre players instead of spending big on actually game wreckers. This signing is just another average defensive end, nothing special.

  28. LakeLand Says:

You don’t build a COMPLETE team by overpaying players. You build a team by getting value from players.

  29. JimmyJack Says:

Yeah well Will Gholston needs to get his head out of his ass. He was awful last year. Guys like him playing soft as football is where leadership, if you have any, needs to step in.

  30. SteveK Says:

Ayers in old and injury proned. Curry is an upgrade.

  31. DB55 Says:

9 sacks in last 50 games does not an upgrade make

  32. I Bleed Pewter and Red Says:

I wonder why we’re not entertaining Suh?

  33. JimmyJack Says:

Lakeland worry about results not pay.

  34. Dapostman Says:

Getting high motor guys not the lazy swaggy Baker types. I like it!

  35. Bird Says:

The deal is up to 27 mil which means base is likely 6 or so range

He has to hit escalators like so many sacks and bucs make playoffs etc etc

  36. SteveK Says:

    Db55

    Ayers is injury prone.

Maybe bring Ayers back at a discount rate?

  37. BucEmUp Says:

I read Curry has 9 sacks in his last 50 games. Why did they cut AYERS?

  38. Destinjohnny Says:

Been saying it Jason is a scout

  39. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

The Eagles cut Curry, to sign Bennett, who we cut, then we sign Curry.
    Make sense now ?

  40. Hodad Says:

I saw Ayers get pancaked twice in one game last year. He later missed time do to concussion, he’s finished. We’ve gotten younger, and better with the resent additions.

  41. Bird Says:

Grimes gets 10 if he makes pro bowl , gets 4 int and bucs get in playoffs

    Dangling a carrot

He is a winner and 2 years younger than ayers

  42. Bird Says:

Ayers and gholston same player. Could only keep one

  43. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

Some of you guys make I good point. I wouldn’t be shocked if Ayers comes back at a discount.

Who else would sign a defensive end coming off a 2 sack season?

  44. Tbbucs3 Says:

Jason Licht just needs some common sense when it comes to free agency signings. The better players you sign, the better off you will be. These constant budget level players do nothing for us.

  45. JimmyJack Says:

Our D-Line is still going to be a weakness. As long as it’s not as incompetent as it was last year we’ll be OK if we can address the secondary.

  46. LakeLand Says:

The Bucs was right for cutting Robert Ayers. Will Gholston should never have been extended. 3 years $27 million is too much for a player of Vinny Curry caliber.

  47. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Ayers was only good when compared to our other trash DEs. He’d have a hard time starting for any other team. He’s a JAG. He had an attitude, but a JAG nonetheless. Curry is a JAG too, but I think he’s better than Ayers.

  48. gotbbucs Says:

    Ayers is all talk.

  49. JJBucfan Says:

Half of the equation is complete, now keep going J Licht and grab Gaines and either Vaccaro or Parker, would love Eric Reid but No!! Reading his comments- dude doesn’t get it. Great talent-wish he just would have chosen a different way to express himself instead of kneeling for the anthem.

  50. BuccaneEric75 Says:

9 million a year for Curry?? Just noticed the contract! Lol! Hopefully only the first year is guaranteed. That’s a lot for a guy who hasn’t exactly lit the world on fire and that a team with the best DLine in the league determined was the weak link and went out and upgraded the position. Hopefully he’ll play with a chip on his shoulder, kinda like Ayers! Lol! Wow

  51. NFLNut Says:

HOW MUCH CAP SPACE DOES CUTTING ROBERT GIVE US? That’s all that matters … and we need to use it on a guy like Kony Ealy or another DE … Denico Autry would have been nice but he’s gone …

  52. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

IMHO, Curry will be an upgrade over Ayers, who finished the 2017 season with just two sacks, his lowest sack total in any season since 2012.
By cutting the 32-year-old Ayers now, we save $6,000,000 in cap space for 2018, the last year of his contract.
Now, if Chubb falls to us ………

  53. bucs_365 Says:

complain complain complain complain complain complain complain complain complain complain complain complain complain complain complain complain complain complain complain complain complain complain complain complain complain complain complain complain complain complain complain complain complain complain complain complain complain complain complain complain

  54. Ed Kerber Says:

I think Ayers May come back on cheaper contract

  55. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Hate to see Ayers go. I liked him a lot. Good motivator.

  56. Jeebs the Honey Bear Says:

Ayers was productive when healthy, but couldn’t stay healthy and is only getting older which doesn’t help. Vinny Curry is a younger version. Would love to see Ayers come back for a cheaper price but probably won’t happen. Maybe we can get Kony Ealy to replace Gholston. Gholston isn’t worth his price tag.

  57. LakeLand Says:

    Complain?

Wait until December then you will see some real COMPLAINING!

  58. LakeLand Says:

If people think the Bucs will make the playoffs by signing other teams trash. Then they better wakeup and come back to reality.

  59. NFLNut Says:

    ********************

Okay, so the Bucs basically paid $3mil to swap Ayers for Curry … that’s not that bad, especially since we didn’t lose a draft pick.

THIS isn’t what I had in mind by “upgrading the DE position” but I do think it makes us marginally better at the DE spot, so there’s that …

And, I think we still have approx. $14.5mil in cap space, though I’ve seen estimates both above and below that figure. However, if we do still have $14.5m we should be able to add a #2 CB like Gaines or Breeland for around $7m and a starting SS like Tre Boston or Vaccaro for around $5m which would be nice.

    *******************

  60. Mike Johnson Says:

W hats Sweezy got going on with Lict. Sweez is the sorriest of’em all yet..he remains?

  61. Sierra119 Says:

If you don’t think the Bucs have improved their D line with these moves, your an imbecile.

  62. Conte Piscatelli Says:

Honestly, no one on the defensive line should get a pass for last year’s dumpster fire. Ok maybe I let Spence side because he missed the majority of the season, but otherwise they should all be fearful of that call from the GM.

    @Lakeland

You say to wait until December for the complaining, but I’m guessing it will be full blown by the end of September.

  63. Sierra119 Says:

Just thought I would add this from nfl.com

“The Eagles cut Curry on Friday after he declined to take a pay cut or restructure his contract with the team. He is ranked No. 18 on NFL.com’s Top 101 Free Agents on 2018.”

  64. BuccLuck Says:

This prices Will Gholston was a terrible contract extension signing

  65. Not there yet Says:

No one except gmc should be gifted a starting job, don’t be stupid and let the pay scale dictate who starts like you did last year with Baker

  66. ATrain Says:

Ayers was to strong for McCoy
Ayers demanded hard play and NEVER SAID HE WAS FLAT TODAY

    MY MCGoo doesn’t like that

  67. Bossmode Says:

The bucs way sign tier 2 and 3 player then when they flame out. 9 million for another back up role player. You could have sign Shu for 11 but some how the fan and Licht will justify the talent gap by saying we or close

  68. Tampabaybucfan Says:

New players bring new energy levels and new attitudes……just look at what our new addition, Swaggy brought last year…actually, though, I think we have at least slightly upgraded our Dline….a healthy Spence would be nice.

  69. Bossmode Says:

We say Licht scared to spend because of his pasts failures when this is the reason he fails. Because you pay average talent big money hoping the will be super stars but pass on the super stars. The Collins kids had a six game replace role but got paid to be Larry Allen when he never show he could play at that lol. Johnson the same year he always been a 5 to 6 sacks guy he have up that and we mad he didn’t give us 13. His 5 sacks would be a welcome these days. The corners was always a man corner come here to play cover 2 off the ball. Hence what’s happening to Vh3

  70. godzilla13 Says:

Why all the haters for Robert Ayers. He was actually more productive than Curry considering he played four games less. Ayers posted the the eighth-best run-stop percentage among 4-3 defensive ends. Curry posted the sixteenth-best run-stop percentage among 4-3 defensive ends. Curry was ranked at 21st for pass-rushing productivity, Ayers was ranked at 20th for pass-rushing productivity.

    Robert Ayers 32, 2 sacks 17 QB hits and 26 hurries=45 pressures $6M
    Vinny Curry 29, 3 sacks 17 QB hits and 27 hurries=47 pressures $9M

So the only advantages for Curry is being 3 years younger and staying healthier. Ayers was way better in run stops and about even in QB pressures. With only 3 years difference in age and Ayers costing 3M less per year, one has to wonder why?

  71. Bossmode Says:

Add early and hope Buckner can coach them up

  72. TOM Says:

Typical Bucs. Cut Ayers & keep sackless, worthless Gholston.

  73. bucs_365 Says:

^ B!tch and moan, B!tch and moan, B!tch and moan

  74. Off the Cuff Says:

Suh is nothing more than a cancerous mercenary these days.
The moment things aren’t going his way, he will quit performing on the field, or claim a season ending injury.

    Sound familiar?

  75. Ed Says:

Healthy and young, better than hurt and older. Plus when you sign a player that was on a Super Bowl winner at least you bring a better attitude on your team.

Sweezy needs to go next and healthy guard should be signed. He was seriously injured when Bucs signed him and should be released on an injury settlement.

A healthy C talent player will help your team more than an injured B talent suiting up with a serious injury.

  76. BigMacAttack Says:

The problem with the line is GMC. He makes every other lineman worse. Please trade him for a high pick. He’s a fat and lazy clown that gets hurt every year by the second game. Cut your losses and move on from this guy. Swaggy was bad but GMC was his buddy. Two peas in a pod.

  77. DB55 Says:

Curry 9mil 68 tackles 5.5 sacks in 32 games. 1 hurt mcl. 11.5 injury garuntee

    Ayers 5mil 60 tackles 8.5 sacks in 24 games 1 hurt knee,shoulder,ankle. 1mil garuntee
