Hello, Vinny Curry

March 17th, 2018

New Bucs DE.

UPDATED 9:59 p.m.: The Bucs have signed defensive end Vinny Curry.

That’s the word from Jenna Laine of ESPN.

Joe isn’t sure this is any reason to raise a glass tonight .

Curry has a grand total of 9.5 sacks in the past three seasons with the Eagles, where he had a lot of help on the front line.

Is this really much of an upgrade from Robert Ayers?

It is an upgrade in payroll. Ayers was going to earn $6 million in 2018. That’s off the books now after he was cut today; Curry will earn $11 million in guarantees as part of a three-year deal with a $23 million base value and another $4 million in incentives, per NFL.com.

Curry primarily is an inside rusher. One would assume he’ll be in on passing downs for newcomer DT and former Eagles teammate Beau Allen.

It’s a steep price for Curry, who turns 30 this summer.

Last season was his first as a starter with the Eagles. Previously, he had been more of a rotational player who maxed out with a nine-sack season in 2014.

In simple terms, the Bucs dumped Ayers and McDonald for Allen and Curry. They got younger and brought in guys fresh out of a winning program. It’s not a massive upgrade, but it’s still an upgrade.

  1. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Yes

  2. JimmyJack Says:

Ayers was a stiff. We will see if it’s an upgrade. Upgrades aren’t had on a statsheet they happen on Sundays

  3. Tbbucs3 Says:

Just another underwhelming free agency signing by Jason Licht.

  4. SteelStudBuc Says:

    Ayers is toast
Currys three years younger and a Superbowl starter. Bye yeasting infection

  5. NFLNut Says:

I don’t get this at all … why not keep Ayers and sign Curry and release a guy like Bryan Russell or Will Clarke?

I sort of feel like our D-Line just got WORSE … and I didn’t think that was even possible!

  6. Maze Says:

    Do some more research Joe

  7. SteelStudBuc Says:

    Ayers is a bum

  8. Joel Says:

2018 free agency for Bucs fans:

Complain when team doesn’t sign someone.
Complain about who the team signs when they sign someone.

    Repeat.

  9. Clw JB Says:

It’s far better depth than what we have if he isn’t – at least they are trying thank goodness – couple more spots and we are in a lot better shape than it appeared about 3 days ago

  10. pabucsfan Says:

Yes it is. I watch a lot of Eagles games due to me living just outside of philly. This guy generates a lot more of a pass rush than Ayers. Also he didnt play as many snaps as a starter typically would due to how much they rotate their dline. Look beyond the stats its an upgrade. I dont typically put all that much into PFF but he was rated the 22nd edge rusher by them which is pretty good. Given Ayers age and recent health issues this is a nice move.

  11. buc4life Says:

Philly made him more of a run stuffer, he’ll be free to rush under Buckner.

  12. JimmyJack Says:

I think they want to get younger NUT. I also thought when they signed Ayers here he was brought in to bring in some leadership and attitude.

They may be getting his loudmouth out of the way to let their young leaders on defense, like Alexander, step up and take charge.

  13. Bird Says:

No go sign breeland to one year prove it deal. 5 mil.

He didn’t pass physical with Carolina cause of infection and they wanted to give big money so they couldn’t risk and wait.

Again bucs should take a risk that pays off and hope he is ready by training camp That way the draft is more best available

  14. Bucsfan1988 Says:

2017 stats: Robert Ayers 45 total pressures (26 hurries, 17 hits, 2 sacks)…Vinny Curry had 47 total pressures (27 hurries, 17 hits, 3 sacks)…almost a trade off except Curry is also younger. I guess we will see what thy’all difference looks like 🙂

  15. SteelStudBuc Says:

Did i mention Ayers is a bum? Watch the tape. Guy gets slapped around more than a 2 bit hold up wait a minute

  16. Broy3434 Says:

Dumbest worst fan base in sports. We overpay bum free agents people were stoked about and complain. We don’t sign overpriced free agents people complain. We sign good players at bargain cost that fit needs. People complain. Get over it. These signings have been great. Gives us flexibility in the draft

  17. Joeypoppems Says:

Don’t know if he will be an upgrade over Ayers or not. On paper maybe. We will know come November.

We all thought Swaggy Baker was an upgrade over Akeem Spence at this time last year. Look how that turned out…

  18. Greg Says:

Woo hoo! Way to go Jason light! Still have more work to do but on the right path

  19. Eric Says:

Looks like were kinda sorta improving. Definite upgrade starter on OL, and some solid rotational guys on DL.

Got some of our key people signed.

Might work out if we have a stellar draft and no freaking suspension.

  20. Bird Says:

    Pabucsfan

Thanks for update on this guy cause we don’t get to watch much of philly games. Good to know. Heard he is hard worker / winner

Again his deal is up to 27 meaning he has to hit serious escalators to get that. Probably more likely 6 or 7 mil and he is younger then ayers.

He could probably go inside as well on 3 rd and passing downs.

  21. Dapostman Says:

How many sacks do you expect Curry to get when he has to share the rush with Cox, Graham, Long and Barnett? He is definitely an upgrade over Ayers.

  22. Frank Pillow Says:

This is a good signing. I would bring Ayers back on the cheap too

  23. JimmyJack Says:

I still hope they are planning to mimick the rotation that Philly used on their D-Line. One of the biggest problems with our line was getting burnt out in fourth quarters……We may not have the same skill as Philly but those guys created a lot of havoc. If we can get younger and stay fresh maybe we can create a little havoc.

Would love to see two Dlineman added in the draft and will be interesting to see how we use them.

  24. Bird Says:

Can’t compare to baker. Baker had work ethic issues and bad practice habits when we signed

  25. Broy3434 Says:

Same fan base that said were tanking. Trying to move to London yadda yadda yadda yadda ya

  26. MadMax Says:

Well hes younger than Ayers so maybe Buckner can tap into something and upgrade his production.

    its better than nothing.

  27. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Okay, now we are talking. This signing I like very much.

  28. JimmyJack Says:

88 nice stat line……I would love to see those hurries side by side and see what constitutes a pressure. Basically, I’m not buying what is said that Ayers is some kind of pressure savant.

It may also be revelant to see how many passing snaps each player got. Not sure if there would be a drastic difference

  29. Bird Says:

    I’m sure Buckner had input

Buckner watched all tape/practices on all former /current bucs and ayers or gholston had to go cause they are same player with gholston obviously younger.

  30. TheRealJoe Says:

Check his PFF grades last year against the pass/run and qb hurries

  31. El_Buc941 Says:

If Ayers were going to join Philly and Curry was let go it wouldn’t make sense.but Ayers didn’t do anything but pressure last year and we are tired of it.Curry is a SB champ.been there done that.yea he may have only had 9.5 sack in 3 seasons FOR the eagles but this is tampa.new team fresh start guys.on a team of nobody’s (Philly) he produced 9.5 sacks.that should speak volumes.Beenet on a team of elite defensive players had way more because HE HAD HELP!if this guy can get 9.5 sacks on a team if nobody’s it should tell you something….if McCoy gets double team and can flush the QB out Curry will be their waiting with open arms.or Spence will be.lol

  32. WhatTheBuc Says:

This is better than doing nothing but not by much. This guy is what we already have. Averages 3 sacks a year. That’s 3 million per sack. If we had 3 of him we still wouldn’t have 10 sacks. All of the people that were all over this guy need to join the Michael Johnson fan club. I just don’t understand how these guys evaluate free agents.

  33. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

Don’t know about y’all, but last time I checked 3 sacks is better than 2 lol.

  34. Tbbucs3 Says:

Bucs fans tend to get hyped about these players until they actually hit the field. Not long ago I remember totally undeserved hype around Jeremy Mcnichols and that CFL Wideout Derrell Walker on here. Both of which are no longer members of the Tampa Bay Bucs. Some things look good on paper but that’s not how football works.

  35. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

Well if @Joe isn’t sure, then hell, we can’t be “sure”, right?

Well this Bucs fan is sure. It was a wise move for Jason to wait out the Eagles that needed to cut Vinny anyway, well done Jason. We will ask more of Vinny here than PHI did there, and he is 3-4 years younger, and he reunites with Allen here, maybe that’s worth a little.

Ayers will likely be re-signed at a reduced rate, and NO idea why Gholston is still on the payroll, or at a minimum at THAT number. Restructure.

    Go Bucs! Well done Jason.

  36. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

If he can start for a super bowl team he can start for me lol.
I’m starting to like this Trench makeover. 2 EXTREMELY good run stuffing DTs to rotate. Vinny Curry is more athletic than Ayers. The reason the didn’t cut Clarke or Russel is $$$$$. We know that Noah Spence can rush the passer when he’s healthy, and it feels to me like Chubb will fall to at least 5. We may have to move in front of the Colts to get him tho. But it shouldn’t cost too much because Denver wants a qb, and they know that the colts aren’t taking a qb. So moving back 2 spots won’t be much of a risk of losing out on the guy they want.

  37. Wausa Says:

He is a much better player than Ayers right now.
He was rotated out on passing downs with the Eagles first round pick last year.

  38. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

    Tbbucs3
There was a very select few excited for McWeapon lol. And only 1 that I recall touting Walker.

  39. JimmyJack Says:

Broy……Please forgive my rudeness but dude shut the f*** up!! This team has sucked for 16 back to back seasons. Fans have every right to complain. Get off your high horse bro.

And I would consider myself to be on the optimistic side of the fan base and I do debate with the complainers all the time. I even poke fun at Tmax from time to time.

But I would never condone their disdain because I feel their pain. The fact that you don’t makes me question your loyalty.

  40. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

    Elbucs
The eagles have fletcher cox (arguably better that McCoy) AND Brandon Graham. Hardly a cast of nobodies lol

  41. SCBucsFan Says:

There is also something to be said in bringing a guy with a ring into the locker room. This team needs winners .

  42. Joeypoppems Says:

I dont see how these signings give us more flexibility in the draft. We have the same exact holes on this roster that we had before FA started.

  43. Bucsfan1988 Says:

Yeah same here JimmyJack. I personally think this was a good move. It’s said Curry practices hard and is a good character dude. Polar opposite of Baker. Buckner will add more fire & aggression.

  44. Bird Says:

Curry hasn’t missed a game in 4 years.

Ayers missed 4 this past year and 4 year before. People can continue to bash this move. But I like it. Curry is a younger and healthier version of ayers. Both were leaders Similar contract. Curry coming off super bowl on a team that held players accountable.

Ayers can’t be upset. Missing 8 games last 2 years sold the deal.

  45. feelthepewterpower Says:

Vinny Curry is a beast! Good signing!

  46. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

Here’s hoping that Indy goes full retard and lets Chubb or Nelson drop to us.

Obviously Chubb would fit our most pressing need better. How sick would it be if we could get him in the 1st and Okoronkwo in the 2nd?

  47. JimmyJack Says:

Was Curry on the field for the last series in the SB when they forced that fumble. That was a Championship series there. The D-Line wanted that win and they emptied everything they had and came at NE every play until they got to Brady……They wanted it more and that is the type of attitude that wins in the league.

That line gave up a lot of offense but when the game was in their hands they raised their intensity and simply took it!! I commend that effort and am jealous of it.

  48. dixon Says:

curry was ranked 22nd pass rusher, 9mil
ayers was ranked 20th pass rusher, 6mil

    3 yrs younger

    am i missing something?

  49. sunshine Says:

If u think signings are great ok..so after a 5-11 record I should be glad to spend 3grand for 2 season tkts?

  50. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

May not have the sack total others do, but they say he is excellent at getting a ton of pressure on the QB, which is a heck of a lot more than anyone not named McCoy can say.

And if nothing else, he and Allen bring a winning culture to the locker room, so there’s also that.

Little disappointed to see Ayers go, but this is an upgrade.

  51. LakeLand Says:

Just another free agency where Jason Licht overpaid for a bunch of bums. If people actually think the Bucs will make the playoffs with other teams trash. Then I suggest they wakeup and come back to reality.

    3 years $27 million SMH

  52. SOEbuc Says:

Who gives a sh#t about his stats. Ayers was old and couldn’t ever get to the QB with GMC being double covered right next to him every down. This dude is younger and was a starting DE of a good defense that won the super bowl last year. Good sign Bucs. All you Yucs fans need to stop crying about not picking anyone up and then crying when we do make a good signing.

  53. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Gotta say, they sure are addressing the defensive line.

Now if they would go after Tre Boston…

  54. Skoorb43 Says:

Hmmmm. So many misses in trades and free agency. I’m sure he’s a solid player but I’m still meh

  55. JimmyJack Says:

88…..For the life of me I will never understand the Baker signing. I remember Licht once saying he wants guys on his team that love football. Baker does not fit that mold and is one of the few we have gotten that doesn’t.

Glad that experiment is over and glad to see us go back to getting guys who seem to love the game.

  56. JJV Says:

A good friend of mine lives in Philly and watched this guy over the years. Curry is a beast. Check out some of his highlights on Youtube including mic’d up. This was a great signing.

  57. bucs_365 Says:

    Life of a Bucs fan.

  58. LakeLand Says:

The Eagles has watched him over the years…up close and personally. So why did they cut him after trading for Michael Bennett.

  59. Joeypoppems Says:

Every player looks good on highlights. Thats the point of them……….

  60. LakeLand Says:

    Complain?

    Wait until December lol

  61. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

Oh btw, Vinny Curry is an upgrade over Ayers in terms of 2017 stats.

Rob Ayers had 2 sacks, 16 QB hits, and 45 Pressures on 587 snaps in 2017.

Curry had 3 sacks, 17 QB hits and 47 QB pressures on 578 snaps.

It’s not much but it’s something, plus Curry is younger and less injury prone than Ayers.

  62. LakeLand Says:

7 of 9 years as the NFC South BOTTOM FEEDER make some Bucs fans happy. They are content with losing…this don’t fly in Lakeland. We actually win in Lakeland.

  63. 1sparkybuc Says:

The fleagles wanted to keep him. They are tight against the cap and simply couldn’t afford what he deserved. Great move for the Bucs. I live just north of Philadelphia and look forward to their fans bitching on 97.5.

  64. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Ayers finished the 2017 season with just two sacks, his lowest sack total in any season since 2012. By cutting the 32-year-old Ayers now, the Bucs save themselves $6,000,000 in cap space for 2018, the last year of his contract.

  65. Bird Says:

    Jjv

I just watched highlights. He is a beast. He can play inside on passing downs. Man he is a guy that goes for strip sacks. Saw like 5

  66. Willy D Buc Says:

Ayers had more QB pressures last year. Should’ve kept him but maybe he comes back on a cheaper contract.

  67. Buccaneer scotty Says:

Joe is never happy with anything just like most the people on his site! You my friend are no fan you suck! You have zero inside information about anything everything the bucs do comes up here hrs or days later what a joke!

  68. SOEbuc Says:

    @Bird

“Curry hasn’t missed a game in 4 years.”

Getting good, healthy young players (Jensen all 16 last year). I remember there was a game last year where our entire starting team fell to some kind of injury at some point in the game. I can either blame Koetter for being soft as hell or the Glazers maybe paying way to much for the bio freeze tanks that could’ve totally back fired. But I’m all down for good healthy players.

  69. JJV Says:

Bird, that’s what I am trying to tell the Bucs fan. They will see for themselves. We got a good one.

  70. Bird Says:

    Not true

Curry had more pressures. See post above

  71. JimmyJack Says:

If they can bring in some good players for the secondary I don’t see any problems……I did hope to get a Bennett or Mo or Peppers but those guys are old and probably not the best fit for us.

This team is not built to make a run now and we are not one edge rusher away. Their are still young options to help our secondary that can also be a longer term solution.

This team needs to find players who are part of the future.

  72. LakeLand Says:

The Eagles never planned to keep him for the 2018 season. They traded for Michael Bennett. The only reason he wasn’t cut before last week, they couldn’t find a trade partner. The Bucs should have traded for Michael Bennett. This is what Bennett is due.

    3 years $22 million

  73. Bird Says:

    Building the trenches

  74. Deft Jeff Says:

Well what do you know, another negative post from Joe. The only thing worse than the articles posted on this site are the comments below them.

  75. Bird Says:

    Lakeland

Trades take both sides to agree Bucs wanted Bennett. Can’t do anything if other side doesn’t agree

Your right though. You are a die hard bucs fans so you think it’s you’re right to complain about everything.

  76. JimmyJack Says:

Lakeland……The last nine years don’t concern me any more.

I don’t care how bad we were with Dominick running the show and I don’t care about two years of Lovie.

This is a new era in the last two seasons. I could care less about the incapable front offices we have had in the past.

  77. todd Says:

    Sign Ndamakong Freaking Suh—PUULLLEEEEZZZZ!!

  78. Steven007 Says:

With the money we already had committed to Ayers, six million dollars, this is essentially a three million dollar deal for a younger player. Smart move.

  79. Broy3434 Says:

Jimmyjack- you can kiss my a$$ the truth is people whined and whined and whined and acted like a bunch of little girls ONE DAY INTO FA. Not even. I’ve dealt with it since the 90’s too but I’m a realist. I call it like I see it and the writing was on the wall about what signings were coming. If I’m not mistaken you were one of the many complainers. So right back at you

  80. LakeLand Says:

Well we will just have to wait and see how this thing play out. I’m just analyzing the moves. Some people may have another name for it, but that’s their opinion.

  81. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

So this is what we have so far…

    • QB Ryan Fitzpatrick – 1 Year
    • WR Mike Evans – $82.5m, 5 Years
    • WR Adam Humphries (Tendered) – $2.914m, 1 Year

  82. LakeLand Says:

I’m glad I was bless with the maturity to act like an adult instead of a snotty nose child.

  83. Steven007 Says:

Broy, preach. JimmyJack, you’re obviously a good, smart and dedicated fan but I understand exactly what Broy is saying here. We are all impatient. But I think we’re making reasonable moves here to address problems with the team. Let’s see how it all plays out.

  84. Broy3434 Says:

Oh jimmyjack- funny how I’m not even close to the only one saying the same thing

  85. SOEbuc Says:

  89. JimmyJack Says:

Good broy. Focus on me. leave the complainers(yes I was one of them) alone. They have a right to have a miserable opinion about the Bucs and I got their backs.

  90. Mike Johnson Says:

6 NFL seasons and 22 sacks for Mr. Curry? OK…beggers cannot be choosy, We’ll take him. I would have taken Bennett over this guy. However…Its a..BUCLIFE baby!!

  91. Broy3434 Says:

Thankyou Steven007- much appreciated. I’m a die-hard. I lose my mind every Sunday watching this team do stupid thing after stupid thing. New season new leaf. I told people days ago “ej Gaines Jensen curry beau” and most have come to pass. People just gotta have some faith. This website has just become a dive bar to whine to the bartender.

  92. Richbucsfan Says:

If I’m not mistaken this is the second Eagles D-lineman acquired. Not bad. Feeling some better.

  93. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I think a picture for the draft is forming. For example…Bucs exercised a 1 year option on Dotson. So that could mean they draft a RT to prep for next year…

  94. Broy3434 Says:

As for the signing – curry was in a deep rotation. He’s a good day end

  95. webster Says:

    Jimmyjack

Exactly. Buc fans complain about licht/koetter as if they have been here the past 15 years. This is a totally new regime so i am okay and letting them build this team. And no, 2 years is not enough time.

  96. NFLNut Says:

    *****************

I predicted the Jets trading up to the #3 spot a while ago … when it didn’t happen, I figured the Colts were trying to get an even bigger package from the Colts, but today the Jets got that #3 pick to take their next QB and PAID THROUGH THE NOSE to do so.

They basically traded 3,070 draft pick points #6, #37, #49 AND a 2nd rounder in 2019 for the #3 for a pick that was worth just 2,200 points … that is a 40% profit in draft capital for the Colts! GREAT WORK BY INDY.

Now, if the Bills want to trade up from #12 to #7 with the Bucs and we demand the same 40% profit in draft capital, the Bills would need to give us #12, #22 AND #96 for our #7 … THAT IS A KING’S RANSOM we should not turn down in all likelihood!

    *****************

  97. LakeLand Says:

    One thing I’m not,

    I’m not a Hypocrite

I make an analysis and stick with it

  98. NFLNut Says:

    **************

    UPDATED MOCK:

    Browns: Sam Darnold
    Giants: Saquon Barkley
    Jets: Josh Rosen
Bills (trade with Browns): Josh Allen
    Broncos: Quenton Nelson
    Colts: Bradley Chubb
Bucs: TRADE DOWN to Cardinals or Dolphins so they can take Mayfield

    **************

  99. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

I am with the fans that think that Buckner has has evaluated tape on all these available DL and we may have gotten a GREAT deal on this signing.

  100. Buc4life Says:

Curry is a definite upgrade over Ayers, dude hasnt missed a game the last four years. Great move IMO

  101. LakeLand Says:

    NFLNut

    That could be the top-6

  102. Geno Says:

Joe, hoping you can do more of an analysis on a player that had over 700 snaps on the Eagles defensive line last year.

  103. Rod Munch Says:

Interesting move. If you believe PFF, and I don’t, Curry was quite good at pressuring QBs – then again PFF said Ayers was quite good too. They do have Curry ranked just above Ayers, but outside of that I don’t know much about the guy. PFT said his guarantee money might be injury only, meaning it’s truky a prove it deal, if he makes the team he gets $9m, but if he doesn’t he gets nothing. I find that hard to believe he signed a contract like that, but if he did good on him for betting on himself.

  104. LakeLand Says:

But I have it like this,

    1.Cleveland Sam Darnold
    2.Giants Saquon Barkley
    3.Jets. Baker Mayfield
    4.Cleveland. Bradley Chubb
    5.Denver. Quenton Nelson

  105. Buc4life Says:

If we cant trade down just stay at 7 and take Nelson if he drops or Vea or Derwin…if we can somehow weasel back into the 1st take Davenport…guy has a crazy high ceiling that is worth the bust risk IMO but not at 7

  106. JonGruden4President Says:

I like it. The mid has potential and has had an 8 sack season under his belt. I don’t think we should release Ayers so. Let these boys all compete and see how iturns out.

  107. ninety9buc Says:

He’ll yeah Vinny Curry is an upgrade!!!!!

    Ayers was way overrated!!!!

    Good job Jason!!!

  108. Not there yet Says:

I’m not getting excited about any of these guys until I see production in a bucs uniform. Rookies are different and I love the draft but free agency has not been kind to this team so who knows if these guys will be a good fit

  109. LakeLand Says:

Every season Bucs fans get all excited about free agency and then curse the sky in December.

  110. Bird Says:

    Look at contract.

It’s actually 3 years for 23 base. Up to 27 on escalators.

The 11.5 is gauranteed for injury whatever that means It appears the bucs can back out if he is not the guy. Someone tell me if that is correct ?

  111. LakeLand Says:

I don’t take them serious anymore

  112. Bird Says:

    Rod munch

Yah. Saw that too. Never heard of that. See my last post. Base is actually 23.

  113. Defense Rules Says:

Good run-down on signing thus far Bonzai … thank you.

@Frank Pillow … “This is a good signing. I would bring Ayers back on the cheap too.” Agree with you Frank. If Ayers is willing to come back for less (and I suspect he will), it doesn’t hurt a thing to add him to the roster & let him compete. It’s all about getting the best players on the field, either as starters or as key rotational players or as depth. I’d personally re-sign McDonald for exactly the same reason. Plus guys like McDonald & Ayers bring a bit of nasty to the DLine that it desperately needs, as well as LEADERSHIP.

Good signing by Jason Licht. Now PLEASE add a starting outside CB to get us ready for the draft.

  114. Drew aka q Says:

All the fans in here… please relax and not get all hyped… weve been doing that the past few years and we always have a messed up season… im so sick of this team getting all the hype and we end up 5-11

  115. JAB83 Says:

    Rod Munch

    Excellent observation!!!

To add to it. That kind of attitude is infectious…. And thats not a JAB at the MERSA fiascos we all Indored over the last decade.

Cant blame GMC for that. I digress.

Your point highlights an X Factor! This is EXCITING NEWS that warms the heart of The 12th Man.

  116. JJBucfan Says:

Still some good Safeties left- only reason to not look is if you want Fitzpatrick or James. I think we will sign Ayers, I just hope they make it more incentive based maybe that is what the beast needs.

  117. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Hey Joe…..He has a RING!!! He has a RING!!!

That seems to be the measure of a player these days…

He also has 3 years and 4 lbs on Ayers…

If we can afford it, I’d like to keep Ayers….we need all the depth we can afford.

It’s not like the Bucs to cut guys late….perhaps some restructuring with Gholston & Ayers is in order….Especially after they believe they have been replaced.

Now let’s get a CB and I’ll be much happier.

  119. Tampabaybucfan Says:

OOPS….Didn’t see where Ayers was cut……good luck Robert.

  120. SCBucsFan Says:

The hope is there is a run on QBs, 4 going before us. Either way 7 gets us a pretty good player of trade for additional picks. This team has holes, no matter what it will be a good day.

  121. ATrain Says:

Hey I was wondering How is that overpaying working for the Jags

Thank God the Bucs didn’t go for a High Priced Guy like Campbell

And Fans a stupid because we complain

Some of you a simpletons Blindly following

Don’t Talk about GMC your stupid
Complain about not getting the top FA your dumb

The Bucs are the SMARTEST team on the bottom of their division

  122. LakeLand Says:

John Dorsey is holding all of the cards in this draft. He can mess up a lot of draft boards with the 1st and 4th pick.

  123. John meeks Says:

I think it is an upgrade over Ayers, I like that our GM has finally woke up!keep going jason, don’t stop now!

  124. LakeLand Says:

    ATrain,

They are overpaying for mediocre players. If you’re going to overpay, then overpay for the best.

  125. SOEbuc Says:

Just watched Curry getting his team pumped in the pre game huddle. Dude is mean and so is Jensen. Two nasty guys on each side of our lines is a nice addition to this soft ass team.

  126. JimmyJack Says:

SCB….That is the most likely scenario with 4 QBs going before us IMO. Teams that need QBs don’t just sit and cross their fingers. Bills didn’t move up to twelve to get a CB, I guarantee it.

  127. Tval Says:

From the BIGGEST eagle/jameis fan the only other guy id have wanted to complement the bucs draft is leg Blount. Det gave him a pretty rich deal tho. Vinny is a workhorse and beau is dependable if anything. True blue collar but great signings…and i like jensen MOST

  128. LakeLand Says:

But the Bills have a good chance of getting a QB at 12.

  129. JimmyJack Says:

Yes SOE!!! I was saying that last night. I love fat physical guys. If these signings get this’s team playing more physical I predict success. Jensen is a big fat physical guy, Allen is 330 pounds I think I heard he is a physical guy. How fat is Curry?

  130. SCBucsFan Says:

LL, here is a news flash… most players are overpaid in free agency. We only notice the Bucs doing it because we don’t care about anyone else.

  131. Bird Says:

    YAH.

Nate soldier is the best -highest paid left tackle. The dude is average at best.

Trumaine Johnson – highest paid db now. Yah. He is the best.

3rd tier running backs getting 7 mil.

I will agree , the jags are filthy. Coughlin is a beast.

  132. Alanbucs Says:

Joe is so focused on sacks and finding the next Simeon Rice! He ain’t out there, get over it! Football is a team sport and we just need Qb pressure and sacks will come.

  133. JimmyJack Says:

Lakeland I just can’t see the Bills have traded up to number 12 to just sit there and hope.

I’m quite certain they made that move to get in position to move up to the top of the draft and get their franchise QB. I’d be shocked if they just sit there at 12

  134. Broy3434 Says:

Jimmyjack-I agree with that. No way buffalo moves up and then prays

  135. LakeLand Says:

    JimmyJack

They may have an eye on Lamar Jackson

  136. Bird Says:

Curry is 6’3 270 lbs. will go inside on 3rd and long like ayers. Allen is run stopper 1st and 2nd

  137. Buco Says:

I like reading local websites of the city the player came from. The know the team and cover them. Read this piece. Dude sounds like an upgrade to me.
    http://www.nj.com/eagles/index.ssf/2018/03/vinny_curry_eagles_1.html

  138. JJBucfan Says:

Yeah Lakeland a clone of Tyrod Taylor, doubtful. I do however think Jackson will go in the first- someone may just overpay to get down and take him- more like the Cards though IMO

  139. JimmyJack Says:

Lakeland they may have their eye on Lamar Jackson but they are still going to likely need to trade up to get him. 4 QBs are almost certainly going to be drafted well before them.

  140. JJBucfan Says:

Has anyone seen anything at all about Gaines interviewing with any teams? I have looked everywhere and can’t find a word about him

  141. JimmyJack Says:

And for what it’s worth I could be way off. I if the first two QBs don’t get selected til 3-4 maybe QB needy teams gamble a bit and see if they drop. Just seems unlikely that teams gamble with possible franchise QBs out there.

  142. JimmyJack Says:

JJ that’s the scary thing right now. We need secondary help and we have only one RB on our roster(I think). The market has gotten thin.

  143. NFLNut Says:

I think Bills trade up to #4 on draft day, if not earlier … no way they get any of the top 4 QBs at #12 … and I HIGHLY DOUBT they want Lamar Jackson, though they may take him if they can’t move up …

  144. USFBUC Says:

@NFLNut – I hope the Bucs get that chance to trade down but I think either the Browns or the Giants are going to trade down with the Bills.

  145. JJBucfan Says:

Still good safeties, Boston, Vaccaro, Reid, Burnett. CBs is like down to Rodgers-Cromartie and Gaines. I would definitely take DRC on a 1 year deal. Gaines for a 1 year as well because if Smitty sits back in that zone and it doesn’t work, he will be gone and Gaines is not a great bump and run guy

  146. JimmyJack Says:

Thanks Bird….270 pounds is a decent slab of beef. This line just has to get more physical. I’m hoping that’s what they saw and will ask from the three guys they brought in.

The biggest disappointment has been Will Gholston and it’s not even close. The guy is the biggest guy on the field and I have seen him big the best lineman on the field for us before. Last year he just got his ass kicked and was pushed around……If that guy can get his game back it would be huge. But if they cut him I won’t be losing any sleep.

  147. NFLNut Says:

^ DON’T FORGET ABOUT BRASHAUD BREELAND … KID IS CRAZY TALENTED, DEDICATED TO FOOTBALL AND GOT SCREWED BY THE PANTHERS IMHO … I THINK HE’D BE A GREAT SIGNING!

  149. Ndog Says:

Lakeland show us one free agent that has not been over paid for. Dude this what happens in free agency and I for one was getting pissed 3 days ago but now I think we have done a pretty decent job. We got good solid contributors who are also hard working accountable players which this team sorely needs more of. Are they super stars no, BUT they are players that make us better therefore we are a better team today than we were yesterday. In addition we have done this without giving up draft picks so we have improved our depth on the dline and added a starting center, starting DE and starting kicker. If we can get a starting RB, DE and safety in the draft, which is not easy but not impossible either then we should not have any huge holes AND have decent depth for the first time in awhile.

  150. Bird Says:

    NFLnut

Agree. Breeland didn’t get signed cause of infection. Panthers wanted to give big bucks on big money. 1 year prove it for 5-7 makes sense. He should be worth risk. Kid can play

  151. JimmyJack Says:

I’d rather see us go younger then a guy like cromartie. We already have Grimes spot that is going to have to be addressed…..Our D-Line is still going to be a weakness in all likelihood, so we are going to have to keep building there.

If we could get a longer term solution at CB this year it will open our future options. Gaines or Breeland may be the smarter choices.

  152. Bird Says:

    Ndog

Agree. Stupid money out there. Nate soldier 15 mil per. Trumaine Johnson 15 mil. I mean give me a break. Cousins. Almost 90 mil gauranteed he is good but wow.

  153. Kobe Faker Says:

    Curry is a beast!

Kobe grewup from thr hard streets of philly

Philly is tapped out near the cap and needed to give their rookie more snaps

Curry will have the most sacks and be the best dlinemen of the 2018 bucs

We get a shutdown corner (fitzpatrick) in the draft. We will make the playoffs if licht gets a pass catching 3 down back in the draft

  154. JJBucfan Says:

Absolutely Nut, I did forget about him, he has 5 months to heal from that. Gotta question his intelligence though, they said on NFL Network he ignored his doctors and didn’t take care of himself and now has a nasty infection. Just need to keep him away from OBP, don’t need another Tynes or Nicks issue

  155. Gary Says:

    Draft Barkley!!

  156. godzilla13 Says:

Robert Ayers was our best DE and we cut him? Way better in run-stop percentage. We need another starting CB more than anything else. Please wake up Bucs and sign a CB.

  157. LichtsOn Says:

    Good luck up

  158. Rod Munch Says:

Licht’s free agency record says this will be a bust.

    • T/G – Austin Corbett, Nevada
    • C/G – Will Clapp, LSU
    • T/G – Toby Weathersby, LSU

  161. Rod Munch Says:

LUVMYBUCS – D-Jax isn’t going anywhere, also your math is way off, he’d be $7.5m in dead cap space. Also getting rid of D-Jax would be one of the dumbest things possible since it means Humphries would be one injury away from starting and thus tanking the entire season.

  162. LakeLand Says:

DJax wasn’t the problem. The problem was Jameis Winston, not getting him the ball. But it seems like DJAX was taking all of the blame.

  163. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Trade/Release Candidate(s)
    • DeSean Jackson – (Age:31) | Cap $ Saved: $11,000,000

    • Gerald McCoy – Cap Saved (2018): $8,501,250
    Total Cap Saved: $12,783,750

    Potential Grand Total:$29,033,750

That’s a ton of cap space – to make additional improvements to this roster – before the draft.

  164. Alstott up the gut Says:

I like the move. Offseason has focused on the depth of both sides of the line which makes complete sense. Jets trading to #3 in great for Bucs. We have a magic number of hopefully four QBs drafted prior to Bucs at 7, and it now looks like QB’s may go 1-3! Let’s go Bills or Cardinals…. get into the QB race! Here’s to Barkley, Nelson or Chubb!

  165. Bobby M. Says:

Guys like Ayers dont mesh with McCoy…..As talented as McCoy is, i get the impression he’s holding back the defense. Locker rooms tend to have an unspoken pecking order due to who has what contract…..McCoy is high man on the defense so he’s still viewed as the “leader”…..Until Alexander or someone trumps him with a new contract, he’s the lead dog….unfortunately he’s a labrador trying to lead wolves.

  166. LakeLand Says:

Mike Evans is a jump ball WR, Hump is a toss WR, but you have to hit DJax deep in stride. The QB has to highly accurate, that’s not Jameis Winston.

  167. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Munch

U can replace DJax production W/ Mike Williams.
The dude only runs certain routes – that’s WELL know by every damn body.

But U right about his contract – he was paid $12M of his guarantee.
Leaving $7.5 in 2018. But if he was traded not released. Are we still liable?

  168. LUVMYBUCS Says:

If U can’t use the dude propertly cut bait. And find a suitable replacement.

  169. LakeLand Says:

    LUVMYBUCS

I said that Robert Woods would be a better fit for the Bucs instead of DJax. DJax only run deep routes, the QB has to accurate on his deep throws. Jameis Winston is not there yet.

  170. denjoe Says:

There’s still a chance they can draft Chubb or Davenport. I think Buckner would love to get his hands on either one.

  171. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Rod Munch Says:
“LUVMYBUCS – D-Jax isn’t going anywhere, also your math is way off, he’d be $7.5m in dead cap space.”

Hence the ‘Trade’ portion of Luv’s post. If he is traded, he has zero dead cap space.

But I don’t see it happening. Would be great to acquire a couple picks in the draft though. Trade Jackson. Then Trade down to 12. That would get us 2-5 more good picks.

  172. JJBucfan Says:

You have to protect your QB so he is not running for his life if you want him to hit his WRs in stride, just sayin’

  173. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

We would not need a WR to replace Jackson. We have Godwin.

  174. LakeLand Says:

I believe Marcus Davenport will be the better pick. If he go to a team that can develop him into their system. Carolina and their DL coach Eric Washington can do wonders with him. I would take Davenport over Bradley Chubb, Davenport has more upside.

  175. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    LakeLand

Damn Skippy – U hit right on the nail.

  176. LakeLand Says:

But the Bucs will be better with Bradley Chubb.

  177. Rod Munch Says:

The reason Hump and Brate were open underneath is because safeties had to help with D-Jax – it’s not like defenses didn’t pay attention to him. You have to do more than look at the stats – if you watch how defenses reacted to D-Jax they were not paying attention to his stat line, they still saw a dangerous guy. In my opinion most of it is on Dirk and his terrible play calling, he didn’t use D-Jax on slants for example, it was go or curl. The timing last year was off but I think that mainly had to do with Winston getting injured. I said all last season it would probably take a solid 4 weeks (meaning the regular season) before they started getting on the same page, and Winston got injured in week 5 and lost his arm strength until basically the end of the year.

As for Mike Wallace he’s never been in the same league as D-Jax, he’s had a couple of nice years, but D-Jax is seen as a true threat with not only speed but quickness and playmaking ability – but Dirk has to do more than call two plays for the guy.

For trading him I think it would come down to how his contract is done and I don’t see any details on that, however based on how most contracts are done with the Bucs in a trade the other team would pick-up nearly all the tab, minus anything the Bucs already paid out for this year. For example Ayers was due $1m in the next couple of days – if D-Jax had a deal like that, only that part of the salary would count against the cap – that’s my understanding of it.

Tried to warn ya’ll about DeSean Jackson.

    Even presented Viable, Affordable Alternatives
So that we could sign Calais Campbell..

    • Marquise Goodwin (2017) $3M
    • Mike Wallace (2017) $8M

But all I kept hearing was how DJAX was far more superior

So lets take a quick look at DeSean Jackson vs…….

    2017 Stats
    • DeSean Jackson (2017) REC: 49 | YDS: 657 | AVG 13.4 | TD: 3
    • Mike Wallace (2017) REC: 37 | YDS: 559 | AVG 15.1 | TD: 3
    • Marquise Goodwin (2017) REC: 41 | YDS: 783 | AVG 19.1 | TD: 1

    Damn – woulda coulda shoulda

    Lol

  179. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Munch

Brate & Hump were open in 2016.
I watch ALOT of film in my spare time – Jameis was getting the same looks in 2016.
As he was getting in 2017.

  180. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Yeah just confirmed if he was traded – were not liable.

So the full $11M would come off the books.

There’s suitbale replacements on the market. So the wise move would be to make a trade. Pick-up additional draft capital & cap space.

  181. Rod Munch Says:

Bonzai – Yes, Godwin had like 3 good games last year, but that’s it. It’s a remarkably irresponsible decision based on a very small sample size to say Godwin is the go-to #2 and Hump is one injury away from being a starter again, which was a complete and total disaster in 2016. D-Jax stays and hopefully Dirk actually bothers to do offensive gameplans and maybe looks at some tape of D-Jax in action and realizes he can do more than run a go or curl. D-Jax should be everywhere and running everything and he should be returning punts at times, etc. Dirk is 100% to blame for Jackson not being successful last year, there was nothing on tape that shows a lack of effort, nothing shows him giving up on the season, it’s up to Dirk to actually do his job of offensive game planning and to get Jackson involved.

Also think of this, say you got rid of Jackson and then Evans got hurt, now you have Godwin and Humphries starting, literally the worst starting WRs in the NFL and it’s not even close and the season is tanked… and for what? Maybe a 6th round draft pick and some cap space that won’t be spent? Makes no sense those wanting to get rid of D-Jax this year, no sense at all.

    LakeLandBuc Says:

Robert Woods makes sense to me, because he’s 24 years old. In his 4 seasons with the Bills, he averages 51 receptions a season. He’s in the 60% catch%, he is a good fit in this offense. We’re not looking for a #1 WR, we’re looking for 2-3, and Woods can be a 2-3. We can draft another 2-3 in Round 1-2. Draft KR/5th WR in the 5th round, someone like FSU WR Kermit Whitfield. And it won’t cost us that much money. Buffalo was a running team, not a passing team like Washington.

  183. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Munch

If Evans go hurt – U still got

    Two Beastly tighends
    Brate & Oj

    Two Solid Receivers
    Godwin & Hump

+ The Viable Free Agent – U would sign to replace DjAX.

So the cupboards would far from bare. Sh!t after the short walk through in Arpil
    – if U don’t like would U see. U can still pick up another WR in the draft.

  184. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    LakeLand

    Amen – solid post brotha

  185. Rod Munch Says:

LUVMYBUCS – Brate and Hump were terrible at the end of 2016, they weren’t getting open at all which is why Winston was having to force feed the ball into Evans on every play. I watch tape too and I see a couple of guys who lack the speed to get open against good defenders. Brate is by far the better of the two but there’s a reason he was undrafted, he can not create separation. Brate will catch nearly everything around him, I’m not saying Brate is bad, but he does his best against zone defenses or when he’s lining up against 2nd rate LBs and safeties because teams are focusing on D-Jax and OJ.

As for Hump he has good quickness but again lacks the speed to get separation – he was absolutely terrible at the end of the 2016. Hump is fine as a #4 WR or if he’s playing against zone defense, but the thought of him being a starter, ugh – we saw it already, it was awful. Hump would be fine in an offense like the Pats that uses quick guys and has a lot less emphasis on speed, but in Dirks deep ball offense Hump is limited in what he can do which is why he mostly played around the line of scrimmage. Also Hump single handedly changed the course of the entire season by fumbling the game again in Buffalo, just another unforgivable sin by the guy. But he’ll be gone next year so we won’t have to worry about him for long.

  186. LUVMYBUCS Says:

I feel like we’re discussing Vincent Jackson all over again …lol

  187. Rod Munch Says:

LUVMYBUCS – Hump is not a solid WR, he’s a #4 WR that is good at running screens and playing around the LOS. Godwin looked great in the limited games he’s played – I think he’ll be a very good #2, but personally I’m not ready yet to bet on the farm on it. OJ is a beast, he’s a superstar, you can see that already. Brate, as a #2 TE, is amazing. But a deep ball offense without a #1 WR and with midget that can’t get open starting as #2, that is a disaster, and we know that since we’ve already seen it.

Anywho none of it matters since D-Jax isn’t going anywhere. You’ll get your wish next year, but not this year.

  188. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Munch

No ones scared of Jameis deep ball.
Deep crossing routes (15-20) – maybe.

So U can put a speedster (decoy) out at flanker – and hit him every once in awhile, and still get the same results.

  189. Tnoles Says:

Like the signing not a twelve sack guy but a tough hard nose dude kinda like Ayers on steroids. I’m digging it. Don’t forget new DC is supposed to be a DL wisperer so, I’m cool with it. It’s said that Poe was a waist of a contract, I lived in Philly for almost 20 yrs. But spent my first 20 in St. Pete, Clearwater and let me tell you from the folks I know up there this hurts! They liked Curry and really wanted him. So let’s be thankful. It’s better than nothing and I promise better than Poe

  190. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Essentially our passing offense – put up almost the same damn yards in 16′.
As it did in 17′. Minus 300 or 400 yards.

So U can replace DJax production and dump his $11M. It’s just that simple.

  191. Tnoles Says:

Sorry meant DL coach not DC

  192. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

    @Lakeland…

    Thanks, captain obvious.

Remember Bucs faithful, Licht has ALL draft picks for rounds 1-4 intact for years 2018-2020.

    Here comes SA-QUON, Say-gone BARKLEY.

    Go Bucs!

  193. LakeLand Says:

    Tnoles

Dontari Poe role is taking on blockers and occupying space. His greatest asset to the Panthers is allowing Luke Kuechly to make more plays. He also will allow Kawann Short to see less double teams. Grady Jarrett had his best season with the Falcons playing next to Poe. Kansas City linebackers made plays because of Dontari Poe. Ron Rivera has one of the best defensive minds in the game, he knows what he’s doing.

  194. LakeLand Says:

Look at the season Deion Jones had with the Falcons. He owe some credit to Dontari Poe.

  195. JimmyJack Says:

Hump won’t be gone he has a very good role on this team moving the sticks. He and Brate don’t get open because of Djax they get open because they are very good route runners and put in the work with their QB. It’s easy to see they have chemistry with Winston.

I though Humphries was off his game at the beginning of the season and I think it could be related to him not being our returner. Maybe he was coming off the bench cold.

And I don’t know how to look up numbers like some of you but I have noticed that Winston looks far more accurate throwing to the posts when the play is right in front of him. I just don’t understand why most every deep ball goes to the sideline.

I really hope Dirk tweaks his playbook and starts working the middle of the field next year……especially with a revamped OLine, and hopefully a running game, O.J. should be able to pick up chuck yards all year long.

There is just nothing more that should be needed to get this offense humming. If we struggle again this year it just proves that Dirk is a horrible HC.

  196. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Bottom line

If we can trade DJax+ Pickup addtional Capspace
Sign & Draft his lost products.

Use that additional Cap-space to sure Up the Defensive line w/Mad Depth

    Bennie Logan (Age:28)
    Kony Ealy (Age:26)

Or Add Additional Depth on the Backend

    Gaines
    Cockrell
    Vaccarro
    Boston

    Make the move
The Goal is to make the overall team better in 2018!!!

U can pluck Wallace or Butler off the market on the cheap.
And get decent production. So no biggie

  197. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Sign & Draft his lost product

  198. JimmyJack Says:

LUV…It’s not about total team yards with Djax IMO……It’s about the ability to get explosive plays.

Say Djax gets you a big play to ice the game and you can run out the clock. are you upset Winston missed a chance to get 300 yards because you ran out the clock?

would you rather take big yards from your QB trying to come back from a 2 TD depict? or rather have a difference maker to get you a lead and manage the clock.

Granted, that didn’t happen Last year. but that’s the upside of keeping Djax

  199. SCBucsFan Says:

I just want to wake in the morning reading Gaines has signed here

    One thing I’m not,

    I’m not a Hypocrite

I make an analysis and stick with it

You sir are the biggest Hypocrite around here trying to push your agenda through whatever that is that you call analysis

  201. JimmyJack Says:

Lakelads analysis…….Any decision the Bucs make=awful….So far his assessments have been near flawless

  202. LakeLand Says:

    Thank you Pit

Jason Licht has the bad track record in free agency. All I need to do is go against him. That alone will make me look good.

  204. LakeLand Says:

    It’s not difficult

    It’s playing the odds

  205. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Whats brotha

I hear U – I’ve enjoyed watching DJax from his early days at Cal W/Tedford. Followed his career from Philly to Washington. There’s no doubt the kid can move. But his overall game has regressed bigtime as he’s aged (naturally right)

Maybe he’s listened to Primetime too much lol. I don’t know.
But he sure is making a lot of BUSINESS decisions on the football field – now days.
U can spot that out quickly – on certain routes. The effort is just not there.

IMO there’s some similarties in both Mike Wallace & Brice Butlers game.
That can easily supplement DJax production in a spread system.

Sh!t Baltimore runs almost the same damn system as us.
And Wallace put up comparable numbers.

    So..

  206. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    JimmyJack

    Whats Up brotha

  207. JimmyJack Says:

Lakelànd. the only thing I will say in defense of Jason is that in his first two seasons he did not have control of the personal. Lovie Smith did. Just like when Gruden was here(post McKay) he had control over personal as the Head Coach.

If you look at Lichts free agency record in just the last two years it’s not as awful. In fact, if Djax bounces back and th I years free agents are productive Lichts free agency’s will look pretty decent post Lovie…..And yep…….That’s a lot of ifs……Same ole same ole.

  208. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Curry played with great players and had “ Ayers like” stats. How will he do with our weak, soft and talentless DL? Kind of like the players who put up stats playing with LeBron and Jordan, just without the stats. He’ll be a disappointment.

  209. BucEmUp Says:

Didn’t McDonald have 5 sacks in part time dury?

  210. JimmyJack Says:

LUV I hear ya……Personally I would have traded Djax in a player deal for an End if possible.

But at the end of the day if I’m Licht and I decided I’m riding on Dirk then I’ve made that decision with confidence. I’d go to Dirk an say “bro, here are our options. You tell me what you need to win”

If I’m confident in Dirk and he needs Djax then that’s what I’m giving him. If he can’t get this offense going then he gets his stupid ass fired. And I may be going out the door right behind him for putting my confidence in the wrong dude.

But as an armchair GM I am going to run my front office as a team and make decisions with confidence.

  211. LakeLand Says:

Derek Barnett had more sacks than Vinny Curry as his backup.

  212. lambchop Says:

    Eric75,

The draft is on the horizon bro. This will be a different DL by the end of the draft and definitely before the start of the season. These are good insurance plays up until the draft. Curry will be required to play at a high level here given that he has a chance to really shine on this DL without all the star power. Let’s not write it off just yet. I’m at least happy we got younger and they’re not sitting on the “we’re close” or “we’re fine with our OL/DL and the players we have” bit. Also, we have Bucker coaching the DL this year. I have a feeling he’s going to make his presence felt with the play from our DL this year.

Michael Bennett was not a realistic signing from both party’s perspective. Given his penchant for distraction off the field and the Bucs dealing with a dud in Fatty Baker, I don’t see the Bucs going after people who don’t fit the culture for a while. And from Bennett’s perspective, he wants to win now not later. I only mention him since some people think we should have got Bennett instead. It’s never that simple.

  213. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

1 Browns – QB SAM DARNOLD
2 Giants – OG QUENTON NELSON
3 Jets (From Colts) – RB SAQUON BARKLEY
4 Browns (From Texans) – DE BRADLEY CHUBB
5 Broncos – QB JOSH ALLEN
6 Colts (From Jets) – CB MINKAH FITZPATRIK
7 Bills (From Buccaneers) – QB BAKER MAYFIELD
8 Bears – ILB TREMAINE EDMUNDS
    9 49ers – SS DERWIN JAMES
10 Raiders – RB DERRIUS GUICE
11 Dolphins – QB JOSH ROSEN
12 Buccaneers (From Bengals Through Bills) – DT VITA VEA

OUR PICKS AFTER TRADE ARE NOW:
    1st Rd – 12 (12) – DT VITA VEA
    2nd Rd – 6 (38) – DE SAM HUBBARD
    2nd Rd – 21 (53) – CB ISAIAH OLIVER
    3rd Rd – 6 (69) – RB NICK CHUBB
    4th Rd – 8 (108) – DT DERRICK NNADI
    5th Rd – 7 (144) – DB QUENTON MEEKS
    5th Rd – 29 (166) – OG CODY O’CONNELL
    6th Rd – 28 (202) – S TRAY MATTHEWS
    7th Rd – 37 (255) – OT MATT PRYOR

Okay, I’m probably totally wrong…but thems the brakes.

  214. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    JimmyJack

    Lol I hear U – Good Sh!t

  215. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

DT Beau Allen and DT Mitch Unrein will be backups. Don’t expect them to be opening day starters. Our DT next to McCoy will come in the first round…VITA VEA!!!!

  216. WutdaBucisthis Says:

    @ WhatTheBuc
    HEY…FIND ANOTHER NAME!!!!
    i was here First…Damn yo

  217. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I don’t personally think Koetter has ANY say in free agency.

  218. Destinjohnny Says:

Jesus if we just would bar signed Suh wouldn’t it have made more sense?
Then if Chubb falls we officially have a d line.

  219. lambchop Says:

    Lakeland,

You’re comparing a 1st Rd pick (#14) to a 2nd Rd pick (#59). Derek Barnett is definitely more talented. But does it mean that Vinny Curry was a bad pickup for our DL? We were putrid last year. The new guys look like they have a desire to play and have a high motor. I’m hoping they have a chip on their shoulder to prove that they were more of a cap casualty than an easy castoff by their former team.

  220. JimmyJack Says:

Bonzai….Really? I think Djax has Dirk written all over it.

Hard to argue Dirk didn’t have any say in paying Doug. One of his first moves as HC was a public plea for the guy.

  221. LakeLand Says:

    lambchop

I agree, but I was only responding

  222. Phillip Says:

A fantasy trade isn’t coming for DJax.. He’s owed too much money and coming off a bad season..

Also everyone who keeps looking at the most basic numbers on the contract (3yrs/27) and whining we overpaid.. That is ONLY the contract if he PERFORMS to the stipulations in it(guaranteed money likely in the first 2 seasons only as well).. Honestly if he gets paid that then he deserves it because he will have performed and we would actually have a damn pass rush

Quit being debbie downers.. If nothing else Licht and Dom both knew how to manage the cap and actually roll over money ($16 million rolled over this season I believe) for the following season

  223. lurker Says:

“this don’t fly in Lakeland. We actually win in Lakeland.”

    Ummmmmmmmm
    But it’s f-king Lakeland! Smh

  224. cmurda Says:

Are you guys kidding me? Pining over only 3 sacks. That’s earth shattering numbers compared to any of our current DE’s. Philly’s D (coached by the guy that should have been hired to run our D) rotates linemen to keep guys fresh. Curry would have a ton more sacks on this team where he would be relied on heavier. This is a good signing. We still need to draft DE, Corner, safety, RB but the DE spot just became less important.

  225. lambchop Says:

In 2014, without starting any game but playing all 16, Curry had 17 tackles and 9 sacks. This guy will be more productive than 2017 Ayers.

  226. NFLNut Says:

    *****************

    Bonzai,

Your mock is incredibly unrealistic imho … the Jets did NOT give up 140% of the #3 picks value to draft a RB and the Colts are NOT taking a DB … they’d just trade to the Bills.

Also, if we trade with the Bills we can get their #12, #22 AND #96 … that’s 140% value and the market was set on picks by the Jets just today.

    *****************

  227. DB55 Says:

Curry 9mil 68 tackles 5.5 sacks in 32 games. 1 hurt mcl. 11.5 injury garuntee

    Ayers 5 mil 60 tackles 8.5 sacks in 24 games 1 hurt knee,shoulder,ankle. 1mil garuntee

Could have kept Ayers and signed legarette Blount. For the same 9.5mil

Shoulda signed Mike Pouncey for 11mil per yr. 3x pro-bowler who’s from Lakeland Florida and a natural/actual/real center.

Take the 8.5 you spent on Allen and Unrein and you make the trade for Bennett. 4th and his 6.5 mil contract for 2018.

Who would you rather have on your roster?
    Ayers, Bennet, Pouncey, Blount
    Or
    Curry, Allen, Unrein, Jensen

  228. RLichtsOn Says:

    He will be a stud

  229. NFLNut Says:

    *****************

    DB55,

I’ll play along but will add the pick you didn’t mention and the salaries:

    Ayers ($6.5m), Bennet ($8.1m), Pouncey ($11m), Blount ($2m)

    Or

Curry ($7.7m), Allen ($5m), Unrein ($3.5m), Jensen ($10.5m) and a 5th round pick (let’s say Bo Scarborough for the sake of argument since you included Blount).

I’d rather have Curry than Ayers and Scarborough than Blount … but I’d certainly rather have Bennett than Unrein … as for Jensen or Pouncey, that’s a tough call as Pouney MIGHT be better than Jensen but he’s also older and has a lot more injury concerns.

All in all, I think Licht did fine and I think your list was fine … it’s not a big deal.

Honestly, if you gave another GM the same $27.6m to play with he might have signed EJ Gaines ($7.25m), Honey Badger ($7m), Denico Autry ($7m), Carlos Hyde ($5m) and re-signed Charles Simms ($1.35m) and I would have that was a solid way to go as well.

  230. Snookman Says:

I think the bucs are trying to do the best they can with what is available and with what makes sense. Some of the big names do not make business sense as they will not provide the same ROI as some of the lesser guys. We are not a team that is just a few players away. We have some serious long term needs and we have a good core that we can build on. The bucs know that this year’s draft is going to be where we improve. Look for them to trade out of the #7 spot to a team like Buffalo, Arizona, or Washington for some extra draft picks. Realistically we need to be thinking about 2019, 2020, and 2021 before we think 2018 is going to be break-out year. Our division is way too talented for us to be successful with the team that we have. Those big name free agents are not going to make an impact that will justify the salaries that they will command. At some point we have to be realistic with where we are at as a team and that is not good enough to be a winner in the NFC south. Some if it can be mistakes made in the past by previous regimes and some by this regime(I.E. Kicker in second round when we needed a DE). The Draft is going to pretty much show you what direction this team is going for the future. We are in great position to gain more draft picks that will pan out in years to come……………2017 FA gave us all a false sense about what this team really is.

  231. MadMax Says:

    Welcome aboard Vinny!

Im getting it, go after SB winning teams players who werent the #1. Its a strategy thats been in place for years. Hasnt worked out so well in the past for us though (DT’s, Sweezy, others i cant think of)…..Be that different one Vinny.

  232. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

JimmyJack, I Meant this year, not historically.

  233. BuccaneEric75 Says:

I don’t know this guy, but what I do know is that the last time we signed a DE in FA that was low on sacks but great at pressures it was Michael Johnson. Not a good thought.
