Mike Evans Gets Paid

March 9th, 2018

Lotto time

Team Glazer signed off on a mammoth contract for wide receiver Mike Evans today.

He’ll be around a while.

Wow!

Per various reports, Evans’ fat new deal is $55 million guaranteed as part of a five-year, $82.5 million extension that puts him in Tampa through the 2023 season, if the Bucs don’t cut him sooner.

It’s a gargantuan commitment, one that makes Joe believe this will be DeSean Jackson’s final season as a Buccaneer unless he has a Pro Bowl-level year.

Joe is curious to see how the contract is written and in what year Evans will get the most Team Glazer loot. Yes, the Bucs can rollover a chunk of the $70 million+ they have under the 2018 salary cap if they don’t use it all. Evans was due about $14 million this year and that money already was part of the cap figure.

It’s hard to quibble with the Bucs’ decision. Evans is young and productive and he’s proven to be durable enough through four seasons. And he’s among a select few in NFL history with more than 1,000 yards receiving in each of his first four seasons.

Joe’s one big hope for Evans today is that his friend Johnny Manziel doesn’t hit him up for some cash in the next couple of years.

    I’m ok with this.

  3. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

Well deserved! Hopefully Jameis and the passing attack get truly back on track in 2018. Better to give Mike the $$$ now before OBJ gets his.

    Smart move Licht!

    Go Bucs!

  6. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

Gonna look like a bargain after OBJ contract

  7. Dre Says:

Let’s see if he’s worth it. Definitely a good wideout but NOT in the same conversation as Julio, Beckham or A.B, giving him 16.2mil a year is suggesting that he is…

  8. REdtop5588 Says:

    Love it lock him up

  9. Lord Cornelius Says:

Solid deal imo. The market was set at $16-17 mill already between Hopkins & Brown; and that was their deals last year. The cap rose like 6-7% since then so I could have seen this deal easily pushing $18+.

ODBJ want’s $20 mill + lol. This is similar to when we signed McCoy for like $13-14 mill per year 1 year before Suh got $19 mill on the open market.

Also – just was reading pewtterreports salary cap breakdown. They count ME as like a $16 mill hit against our available cap which is wrong. He was already on the books for $13.3 million. This only costs us $3 mill in our available cap space not $16

  10. SCBucsFan Says:

Come on negative fans, find fault with this

  11. Walter Says:

🤷🏻‍♂️ Cool? It was a no brainer. I’m surprised he was so willing to sign with us, but he’s been itching to get his big pay day probably. Coulda got more on the open market.

  12. Lord Cornelius Says:

    nvm PR had it right

  13. tmaxcon Says:

great deal beating the obj deal. i am surprised evans agent did wait out obj contract. great deal for bucs too bad they can’t make any free agent deals or trades…

  14. KenfromCanada Says:

First good news of the offseason! I’m sure OBJ’s contract exceeds this on per year value. Let’s just hope Evans is hungry to prove he deserves this. Go Bucs! I think this might mean big FA contract is coming. Pay your guys first to keep them content.

  15. Ricky Says:

    Congrats Mike!

  16. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I know we’re disappointed that we haven’t fished in the FA pool yet but we have sent a message to our team that we’ll take care of OUR guys.

Those three we just signed and now ME sends a message to the locker room that we’ll pay those who produce.

Sadly what’s happened to frequently in Buc history is that we’ve paid tons of money to players who did not produce.

  17. OneBucPerson Says:

Fantastic commitment to the best WR we’ve ever had. If he keeps producing like he has through his first 4 years then he’ll be the first Bucs WR in the Hall of Fame, no doubt.

  22. D-Rome Says:

Great news! This was a no-brainer decision. Congratulations to Mike Evans and the Buccaneers. One of the few bright spots in a decade of ineptitude.

  23. MJB Says:

I’m glad you brought up Manziel Joe, the guy you opined for during that draft class if I do recall…glad Licht didn’t listen to you!

  24. AlteredEgo Says:

Applause….happy for him….I feared he would play hard ball from what was in the press which said he would play his rookie deal out to the very end…..man that is a lot of money for a young man….set for life with proper financial advice
    Go Bucs !

  31. SteveK Says:

Does Jason Licht pull a Mark dominik and praise his WR’s blocking when mentions a contract? Hahaha Mike is a stud!

Remember when he pancaked aterrance Newman a couple years ago? Love this guy’s heart, talent, and size. He is like inspector gadget.

  32. pick6 Says:

market has been set. OBJ will get $100 mil over 6 years and then some lesser WRs will start to come due and 2 years from now this will look like a steal

  33. Jarod lauderdale Says:

I am very OK with this.. Now he just has to work on yak & jameis has to work on throwing guys open

  34. SteveK Says:

    Kobe Faker

What’s up with not loving on Mike Evans? He’s a beast!

  35. SteveK Says:

Obj is not that good. Sorry. True premadonna, and it effects his play. Lost most of the year to injury, and he is a little guy. The only WR worthy of a mega contract is Antonio Brown. Obj will get paid, but no way it’s 6 years/$100million.

  36. Waterboy Says:

Well deserved now get him some help.

  37. tnew Says:

Evans is worth the money. He plays hard and he plays hurt. Many diva WR’s have to have everything perfect to play. I thought he closed the year off really well. I’m hoping this contract will have him in charge of the WR room. I think he has a few really special years in him.

  38. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Great Job Youngman (ME13) – You’ve done your family proud.

  39. Waterboy Says:

Lol I missed that last sentence when I first read this article. He’d better put a call block on Johnny Manziel’s number and move to an undisclosed location.

  40. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

So the brilliant Mike Florio @PFT just composed an interesting piece Bucs fans, about whether or not Mike Evans’ new deal makes DJax available in trade? Interesting angle, that Florio thought that maybe the aggressive Howie Roseman in Philly might want to bring back DJax as their new deep threat for Wentz, now that they traded Torrey Smith, etc.

Problem is, PHI doesn’t have a 2nd or 3rd rounder in the 2018 draft.

Maybe we could land Fletcher Cox in a player for player trade for DJax, plus we throw in say a 4th rounder in 2019??? That would help PHI’s cap problems.

    ???

    Go Bucs!

  41. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Now trade DeSean Jackson for sack of Doritos – and we good.

  42. Kobe Faker Says:

MEME best has been seen and he will only decline from this point

He will only get slower and his body will breakdown starting this coming year…avg 12 games per year for the next 3 years

The most overrated player in the NFL

I would rather have had jarvis landry

Ask what dallas thinks of the bloated mistake contract to des Bryant

  49. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

I hope we trade DJax before the draft cuz we are set at WR with Evans and Godwin on the outside and Hump in the slot. Add a veteran WR and draft one around the 4th or 5th.

We have plenty of money over the next few years, even after resigning our own guys. Free agency hasn’t even started and way too many “fans” here are leading the chase with pitchforks and torches. This “manhunt” is absurd and I firmly believe Licht has a plan in place.

The only guy so far that we have missed out on is Quinn. The others are old and past their prime and still have bloated contracts.

  50. NFLNut Says:

    ***********************

I’m thrilled to see Mike Evans locked up for the next 6 years … and yes I do believe OBJ’s contract will make Mike’s look like a bargain … and ya’ll can THANK JAMEIS as if Glennon was still QB I think Mike would be forcing the team to franchise him and looking to bolt at the earliest opportunity.

To the guy who said OBJ won’t get $100mil over 6 years … yeah right … OBJ will get WAY MORE than 16.67mil per year and you can take that prediction to the bank.

My guess on OBJ’s next contract is 5 years, 100mil with $60mil guaranteed

ALSO … it’s now time to TRADE DESEAN JACKSON … if Cousins signs with the Jets, the Jets would be a perfect trade partner imho … otherwise I’d think the Chiefs (Mahomes needs WR help and loves to throw deep) would probably give us the highest pick, maybe something like their 3rd for Desean and our 7th and I would pull the trigger on that deal in a heartbeat.

  51. LakeLand Says:

Mike Evans need to improve on his YAC…….1.7 YAC isn’t helping your QB or the team.

  52. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

I personally think we will sign 1 maybe 2 offensive lineman and for sure a DT and CB in free agency. Safety is another position we can fill in free agency. Corner has several young options that can help immediately.

Someone like Pugh or Jenson would really help our O Line and Poe would be my pick at DT. I hope Wilkerson will at least give us an interview because I think him playing as a 43 DE would benefit us and him. He is still young and ultra talented.

Our best bet though for DE is the draft. Trading down and taking someone like Landry or Davenport would be a great move IMO.

As far as RB goes I hope we sign Hyde cuz I think he would be perfect for our system and is the ideal back for Koetter. I would still look to draft a RB in the 3rd round like Penny. If not I would be totally happy with a combo of Hyde and Barber.

  53. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    LakeLand

I hear U – but have U ever noticed that when guys -step outside of their zone.
Trying to do too much- they get injured? I don’t know how many times – I’ve heard a basketball coach – demand his star point guard, etc. To get to the foul line more.
And all of a sudden – the kid get banged up more. Misses a ton of games.

    Just a thought.

I’m cool w/ what Mike brings to the squad.
I just wish our QB would throw him -more cathable -jump “Deep Balls”.

  54. Bucsfan951 Says:

Now to trade McCoy and get some young hungry blood on the d line.

  55. Gambelero Says:

This will help us keep Jameis.

  56. LakeLand Says:

    LUVMYBUCS

    That’s true,

Miami is trading Jarvis Landry to Cleveland for draft picks.

  57. SteveK Says:

    NFLNut,

You’re silly. Mike Evans would’ve been extended regardless of QB. In fact, I argue he makes jameis better. Nice try with your funny interjection.

  58. Mike Johson Says:

Can Mike Evans Rush the passer?

  59. DBS Says:

If Mike wanted to bolt he would turn down the offer. Force them to franchise him then go to a winning team. 1 person is not a reason to want to stay with losers.

  60. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

EJ gains to the Bucs. Supposedly

  61. DanBucsFan Says:

That’s all we need as a fan base. A little excitement now flowing through our veins. Noww sign a starting guard and a cb or twoo and we will be making moves in the right direction.

  62. SteveK Says:

    NFLNut,

To prove you’re a “loon” for thinking Jameis made mike Evans able to get extended, I ask you to look at Evan’s rookie year when he caught 12 TDS from the likes of Josh McCown and Mike Glennon.

  63. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

I think nfl but is saying that mike WANTS to be here because we have a QB. If he was stuck with Glennon or McClown he would play out his contract and move on via FA

  64. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

    NFLNut ***** not but lol

  65. Pit Says:

none of our WR has good yac not only Evans.Do you know what it means? yes our QB throws don’t give our WR a chance to make any yac.
Another think i am scared of is that Winston might not handle pressure very well.
He started playing well only when our season was already gone.
I do love Jameis but if he doesn’t step up this year we will probably need to look for another QB next year.

  66. Bird Says:

    Stud

    Good to hear

Yah. Obj was gonna set the market at 18-20 per

  67. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

    Pit
Lol you want to move on from a qb because he isn’t absolutely perfect while still under his ROOKIE contract? Not every1 can be Rodgers. Winston has set nfl records thus far in his career. Unless something crazy happens I would bet my house that JW will be here a long time.
A lot of the Non Yac comes from the horrible play calling. Can’t wait for JW to get a real coach

  68. ZK Says:

    Send D.Jackson to the Ravens.

  69. Greecosuave Says:

Now all we need is Chris Baker and we’re playoff bound! Wait, what do mean “No!”. Baker is the new Sapp. Pink phone and all.

Nice to see Bug Mike squared away.

  70. SOEbuc Says:

Can’t wait to see Evans and Godwin at #1 and #2 at some point in the near future.

  71. Howard Cosell Says:

Good soul. Seems to be nice guy and care about winning as much as Winston. Physical talents are off the chain. Put him in New England and he’d have historic stats.

Glad he got paid…..STILL have little HOPE THOUGH!!!

    Get your spit together Bucs/Glazers!

  72. Bucballbaby84 Says:

Jackson isn’t going anywheres guys. That’s Jameis boy. He is here cause Jameis wanted him here.

  73. SteveK Says:

Evans is a great player. Thrilled we locked him up

  74. JonBuc Says:

Jarvis Landry only fetched a 4th and future 7th as he was just traded to the Browns. Evans and Landry have had similar annual stats…hope Evans works on YAC and not talking back to officials.

  75. JimmJack Says:

Im curious about the contract details too joe. With our capspace and future contracts to keep in consideration it makes the most sense to front load the deal. But does Licht have that luxary? He may have to hold back so he can sign who he needs in free agency. Not an ideal situation.

Either way great new to lock up a top wr who plays hard and is durable.

  76. SteveK Says:

Evans will get more YAC once Jameis’ shoulder is right and he continues to develop accuracy.

  77. Oxycondoms Says:

Hopefully he reinvests some of that money to keep his hamstrings healthy

  78. Wiscobucsfan Says:

Suprised that tmax was cool with this. Figured he would be against a “career loser” who’s never been to the playoffs getiing paid the big bucks.

  79. BuccoBruce Says:

If you have IG, look who Richard Sherman just started following…. might be a sign

  80. denjoe Says:

I guess they can’t afford FA’s now! People are stupid!

  81. Kansas95Buc Says:

man y’all be on tmax head a lot lol

  82. Rod Munch Says:

Jarvis Landry is getting $16m… so this is more than fair. Glad it got done before OBJ since whoever signed 2nd will get the bigger deal.

  83. Joe Says:

If you have IG, look who Richard Sherman just started following…. might be a sign

He’s going to the CFL to play with Da’Quan Bowers?

  84. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

“Wait. Now the highest paid player on the team?

But he hasn’t won any meaningful games!” – TMax

  85. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Sherman followed like 5 bucs players on twitter. Could a hint. Or a bluff.

  86. Arealbucsfan Says:

    Now sign Kwon

  87. THETRUTH Says:

Why does DJ being cut even mentioned. Joe no one needs to be cut when we make a signing till we hit salary cap! Which we are never close to any year. So when we are over cap than mention cuts make sense. We Ben 17m under every year.

Excellent signing !!! Let’s go Mike!!

  88. NFLNut Says:

    ***************

    STEVEK,

Once again, you have displayed a massive problem with simple reading comprehension.

I did NOT say that Jameis “made” Evans or that Evans was offered an extension because of Jameis. Please try to read what I actually type and then reply to that, rather than arguing against things I never typed.

OF COURSE Mike would have been OFFERED an extension by the Bucs no matter who the QB was. HOWEVER, I do NOT believe he would have signed such an extension had Glennon or McCown still been the QB. If either of those two guys was the QB I believe Evans would have refused to sign an extension, made the Bucs franchise him and then entered free agency as an unrestricted free agent. THAT is what I said and I stand by that 100%.

Please, for your own sake, develop some simple reading comprehension.

    ***************

  89. Duke Says:

    Nfl,

So McNown and Glennon are better QB’s than Winston? You say trade Mike Evans for a 4th RD pick from the jets and Josh mcnown. Nut You’re a bird or a sewing
    accessory.

    Specialk

  90. Frank Pillow Says:

Mike has earned his second contract- there no denying it. Now, it’ll be a test of his mettle to see if he’ll put in the work to take his game to the next level and continue maturing as a young leader on this team. His antics last year at NO were embarrassing and he still has a tendency to get lost like he did against MN and other press/aggressive CBs. Time to up it Mike. Time to become unstoppable.

  91. NFLNut Says:

    DUKE,

I have NO IDEA what you’re talking about if you’re referring to me as I never said anything remotely close to any of that, and usually when people say “Nfl” to start a post they are replying to me.

  92. NFLNut Says:

    Duke,

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, I see you were just messing with “SteveK” aka “SpecialK”, HAHAHAHA … I love it!

  93. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

He is a great receiver, and I am glad we locked him up.
