Licht: Beau Allen Passed On A Lot Of Cash

March 24th, 2018

The Buccaneers’ new defensive tackle, Eagles free agent beast Beau Allen, is a man with a lot of cheerleaders at One Buc Palace, especially the guys in charge of the money.

General manager Jason Licht told quite a tale during his recent appearance on the Sports Day Tampa Bay podcast.

“He wanted to be a Buc and it was apparent that he wanted an opportunity, No. 1, to come be a starter. I know that the Eagles wanted him back; he liked our situation because he could start. After we had agreed to terms with him, when it was ok to agree to terms, he had another team coming in and offering him more money. And [his representatives] let us know that, but they let us know Beau said he would never renege on a deal. A deal’s a deal.

“So as soon as he landed, I had one of our guys meet him at the airport, and had him sign his contract the minute he walked into the hotel just to make sure we had him.

“Ended up having a beer with him and coming back and saying, ‘We ended up getting a great guy here.’ So I like a guy that, you know, stands by his word and wanted to be here.”

Cool stuff there. So how much did Allen turn down?

Per Spotrac.com, 26-year-old Allen will earn $5 million this season and has $7.25 million guaranteed in his contract. Did another team offer him $8 million guaranteed for example?

Whatever cash Allen turned down, Joe suspects it was a fat pile of money the Bucs surely would have matched. But Allen did the classy thing — something he might regret in 20 years.

Licht went on to suggest (as Joe speculated previously) that Allen has significant capability as a pass rusher but didn’t get a load of opportunities. “He does have some impressive quickness for a big guy,” Licht said, noting Allen played in some Eagles defensive sub-packages.

Joe’s been very impressed by everything he’s learned about Allen. He’s certainly no Chris Baker, which is very comforting.

Love the signing our defensive line has alot of talent now go get us a shut down corner in the draft and a safety worth talking about!

  2. Joeypoppems Says:

Idk if I like the idea of them possibly just handing him the starting NT spot.

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

He really wanted to play with GMC….so badly he gave up millions….”Nobody wants to come to the Bucs”

  4. Capt.Tim Says:

    Sapp/Culpepper 2

This young man is a massive upgrade at Nosetackle. He is just coming into his own, and Already has proven to be a rock at point of Attack

Cant wait to see how great Beau’s game will become- now that he is a starter.

Expect big things from him. He wont disappoint us.

  5. Alan Says:

We need help in the secondary we don’t have anyone worth writing home about let’s change gears here who is the best corner and safety that will make it to the 7th overall?

  6. C of Buc Says:

    Joe,

What if Licht is pulling a Gruden and it’s just smoke and mirrors?

  7. Leroy. P Says:

got to remember no state income tax in fl so did he really turn down more money ? I think not

  8. Pick6 Says:

sounds good but i’m betting it was similar\same salary with slightly more guaranteed, like Joe is speculating. in other words, it would only have been a better deal if he Chris Bakered it in year 1, otherwise the bucs deal was probably the same or maybe even slightly better with state tax impact and cost of living factored in. but, it sounds good so the agent won’t miss a chance to bring it up.

no way he passed on an extra million or two of real money just to be a buc.

  9. Waterboy Says:

That never would’ve happened with Swaggy.

    ______

I am almost certain they had a long talk about the Chris Baker experience, subsequent expectations and the fact that the starting gig is an opportunity not a guarantee. if there was any doubt about it they dispelled it by basically signing his competition (Unrein) the next day. and that’s before you consider Stevie T and whatever young big bodies they target out of college. I doubt Allen, who has fought for every snap in his career, is coming into this assuming he can cruise through this contract

  11. Ndog Says:

Love the pick up but it is always a risk hoping for players to be more than they have been there entire time in the league. We are doing that with both Allen and Curry so lets all just hope it works which it has a chance simply because they are good PEOPLE. If anyone remembers Alvin Harper we did the same thing with him but he was selfish and was not the kind of person you bet on.

  12. DR FEELGOOD Says:

If you do the classy thing, you’ll never regret it, not even in 20 years. Our defensive line is significantly upgraded, especially if Noah Spence can stay healthy. The way things are shaping up, I’m now of the trade down group if Chubb, Nelson, or Barkley are gone. I LOVE Minkah for our secondary, but if we can get those two Bills first rounders, I would take Vea/Davenport/best DB available/best OL available. Any combo of two of those and we would be looking sweet, then best RB available in round two (Would love Guice or Michel). At 12, we should be able to get one of James, Vea, or Davenport. Go Bucs!!

  13. SB Says:

Lol…..TBBF, you really lobbed that one over the plate didn’t you. Tmaxi must still be sleeping off the liquor.

  14. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “But Allen did the classy thing — something he might regret in 20 years.” If it’s the right thing to do, money has nothing to do with it Joe. No reason at all for a man or woman to regret ever doing the right thing.

And Joeypoppems, I doubt that he’s been handed the starting NT spot. Beau will have plenty of competition in the DLine interior before this is all over I’m convinced. We’ve seen what happens when there’s no competition (it’s called LOSING). Licht will add another big-body DT to the mix, either in remaining FA (Bennie Logan?) or Vea the draft (that was too easy). Actually there are several quality DTs in this draft, and I doubt Licht will use our #7 pick on either Vea or Payne (although I’d love it). More likely that in the first 2 Rnds he grabs a DE, RB, CB/Safety, OLineman, then grabs a beastly, big-body DT/DE in the 4th or 5th Rnds. There’ll still be someone there IMO.

  15. SB Says:

Moderation this early in the morning? Smh

  16. K_Bassuka Says:

That is if you believe the agent. There’s no reason at all to think the agent will make that up so that you don’t come back to your senses and pull back the starter money offer you made to a fringe back up.

I just don’t get Licht’s negotiating techniques. But oh well, whatever as long as he is not a cancer while on this team.

  17. Walter Says:

Shoulda leveraged that into a nicer guarantee from the Bucs. Oh well, played himself.

  18. SOEbuc Says:

Oh boo hoo Joe. He’s gonna be mad in twenty years that he missed out on $750,000 from a guaranteed $8 million. I’d be crying my eyes out if I couldn’t barely afford to buy a Bugatti that I wanted.

  19. TheDailyCoroner Says:

Hoping Beau Allen does for McCoy what Brad Culpepper did for Sapp!

  20. StPeteBucsFan Says:

This guy wants to start. Curry is tired of coming off the field on 3rd downs. These two guys have overlooked TMAX’s negativity about coming to Tampa because of a critical element in any player’s decision…opportunity…guys want to play!!!

Buckner has done a good job of explaining the OPPORTUNITY that awaits these guys by coming to Tampa. That’s 3 significant DL moves in a very short period.
We are basically remaking our DL and the new guys are as aware as we are that the Bucs have had no pass rush. They see a golden opportunity to help turn things around.

  21. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Leroy P, Florida isn’t the only state with no state income tax, and also has 2 other teams that could have offered him a deal. We’ll never know.

  22. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    SOEBuc

You think that’s bad imagine the poor plight of Ray’s FA pitcher Alex Cobb. Last year when the market was absurd folks made Cobb believe he would get 62 million. Imagine how upset he was when this year’s market collapsed and Cobb was only looking at 42 million. Oh the humanity!!! How’s a guy supposed to feed his kids.

Happy ending of sorts though…Cobb got 57 million from the Orioles so he only has to figure out how to replace that five million difference from last year’s deals.

These stories make me want to puke. This is like freaking monopoly money. This is the part of sports that leaves a horrible taste in my mouth. Millionaire players with billionaire owners all of them expecting us to subsidize them by paying for their stadiums with our tax money.

And then we’re supposed to feel any compassion for a multimillionaire who is only earning tens of millions?

  23. BuccaneEric75 Says:

If you read between the lines about Allen wanting to be a starter, then it looks like Vita Vea is probably not going to be a target with 7 or even if we trade back to 12 or further.

  24. BuccaneEric75 Says:

I think the Bucs take Nelson if he’s there. If not, it will be Fitzpatrick, James or Ward. Our secondary is now the biggest defensive need on the team. I’m very skeptical about Fitzpatrick, and I think James is the better Saftey and playmaker. I think Denzel Ward can become a top 5-10 corner in this league by year 2. Elite speed and is not afraid of contact. I don’t care that he’s not 6 foot. Sign me up!

  25. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

Draft articles now….trade scenarios. Maybe an article on 2nd and 4th round targets. Changes to Bucs scouting department, if any, to shed more insight into possibly where Bucs draft might target. And..Saquon stuff, the for with Oline personnel, scheme at Penn State versus for with Bucs scheme, etc…

    Some ideas. Forward-looking themes.

    Go Bucs!

  26. Owlykat Says:

We don’t need Vea now. Don’t forget we have another capable N/T in Stevi T who is an ample backup for Beau. Glad to hear Beau has the ability to go after sacks too. We already know he can do more than stand his ground because he is the best run stopper on our team now. We also know that Piere Paul and Vinny both can stop the run on the way to the QB. So if we trade down we can get a big capable LG like Utah’s as well as Penny who at 220 lbs. can run inside the Tackles with both power and quickness with the speed to out run the secondary, which was why he had more yards last year than any back, including Michele, Chub, and even Penn. States’s No. 1 RB, and he returns kicks for touchdowns too. You then can get a good CB in the second round or Safety if you move Tandy to CB, take Miami’s DE in the 4th who is almost as fast as Chub, with good size and length, and only needs to learn more moves from Buckner, Florida’s PK in the sixth who only missed one kick all year and can kick an 87 yard Field Goal (see Pinero’s video); another CB or Strong Safety in the second 6th, and a speedy Special Team player in the 7th.

  27. Pickgrin Says:

Integrity never goes out of style.

Welcome to Tampa Bay Beau Allen.

I really wondered why they wouldn’t want to bring McDonald back. Figured it was because he kept getting hurt – maybe because he is 25 lbs smaller than they like at NT. But just maybe the Bucs believe they have signed a major upgrade in Allen. And additionally intend to get younger at this position via Stevie T (who they like) and a draft pick from this year’s more talented than usual crop.

DTs are a strength of this class and DEs are a major weakness. If you intend to rebuild your unit via the draft as per stated strategy – then you “take what the drafts give you” – not just player wise but position wise as well.

You don’t reach for a DE in a weak class – you trade for a bridge defensive end who can produce well for a couple of years and improve your unit by drafting from the draft’s strength which is interior DL this year. Then look to next year with a much better crop of ends coming out to draft a couple young DEs for the future.

  28. Bama79 Says:

Boys Minkah is coming and all this speculation that he isn’t is a joke !!! Elite and will play opposite Grimes. Go Bucs and wouldn’t mind seeing Gaines come in, but two years in a row we get All Pro players from Bama.. also need a RB, but don’t be surprised to Barber have a breakout year !!! Go Bucs

  29. jmarkbuc Says:

    SO

if you have to choose between Barkley and Nelson, who do you take?

In Nelson you get a beast who could solidify the position for ten years. No doubt Barkley is special. Nelson could make a lot of running backs look great though.

Ricky Williams was the last ” generational ” running back in my mind. How did that work out for Ditka.

To me you take the OLineman, who could help any good RB. The draft is all a crap shoot. Nelson could = T Mandarich. Barkley could =R. Williams

    What to do?

  30. SB Says:

Dam Owlykat, I didn’t know Pinero was leaving UF! That kid is worth drafting. But not in the Second please Licht. 🙂

  31. Perimeter Blocker Says:

Would have been good if Licht would have sweetened the pot for standing by his word. Actions like that could get around and encourage others to want to be here. The Bucs could look at it as an investment of good will for Allen and future FA’s.

  32. WutdaBucisthis Says:

    @Pickgrin…
    Dilly Dilly

These signings are awesome. Love each one so far. Trade back IF possible. If not grab Vea @7. Vea MUST be had!!!

  33. Piratic Says:

    @Joe: Now THAT’S a well-deserved jab!
Chris Baker was an embarrassment of epic proportions!!

  34. Litgthningthunder Says:

All the signings were overachievers – that is a good sign.

    Joeypoppems Says
“Idk if I like the idea of them possibly just handing him the starting NT spot.”

They are not handing it to him. He gets a fair chance to start. He and the other guy will compete.

  36. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    WutdaBucisthis Says
“Trade back IF possible. If not grab Vea @7. Vea MUST be had!!!”

I want him too, but looking at things, it doesn’t seem we’ll get him. If they were to draft him, Vea would be starting beside McCoy. No doubt about it. That would undermine Allen, who wants a ‘fair’ shot at starting.

So I don’t think we’ll get him. A real bummer. But there are others out there we could get that we like.

  37. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Perimeter Blocker Says
“Would have been good if Licht would have sweetened the pot for standing by his word…”

Could you clarify please? I don’t quite follow you.

  38. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Way I see it…LG RT CB & RB are the remaining big needs, and RT we actually have a year to wait for if we have to.

  39. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

RB Orleans Darkwa is still out there…

  40. Duke Says:

Anyone think it’s odd that a rd 7 pick who is almost at the league’s retirement age
But hasn’t played a snap ever is less controversial, universally praised and has higher fan expectations than a guy like JPP.

Stevie T, isn’t good hasn’t shown anything yet but He’s looked at as a valuable asset to build with

Seriously, is there more meth heads in Tampa than Bartow and Lakeland.
If there is an epidemic, it explains it

  41. Bnomo Says:

    A deal is just that.

Still the Bucs could have given him a bit of the difference.

Thank you for your integrity that is so lacking elsewhere.😇

  42. BucEmUp Says:

    No tree humping?

  43. Mark Says:

Good points jmark. That’s a tough call.
