JPP Better Run Defender?

March 31st, 2018

Run defense overlooked?

Some interesting words from an NFL analyst over at SI.com.

Yeah, Joe is still buzzing over the fact the team finally got an edge rusher. Yeah, Jason Pierre-Paul only had 8.5 sacks last year, but compared to the schlap the Bucs have largely masqueraded as edge rushers the past 12 years, JPP might as well be Bruce Smith.

In breaking down the trade, Andy Benoit of theMMQB.com thinks the Giants, who traded JPP to the Bucs, may come out ahead on the deal. Why? Benoit isn’t all that smitten with JPP as an edge rusher and believes Bradley Chubb is a better one — and he hasn’t even played an NFL snap yet.

In fact, Benoit believes JPP is better at defending the run than chasing down quarterbacks.

Both clubs benefit from the deal. As a pure edge rusher, Chubb is almost sure to be better than JPP, who remains an upper-level defensive end but primarily for run-stopping purposes. The Bucs gain at least a semi-viable edge rusher joining recent free agent pickup Vinny Curry and third-year pro Noah Spence, who played just six games in 2017 because of a shoulder injury. A year ago, Tampa Bay’s only pass rusher was Gerald McCoy, and opposing quarterbacks had all day to pick apart the secondary’s passive zone coverages. With three meaningful forces now accompanying McCoy, the Bucs have a chance to look like the defense they did in the second half of 2016.

Joe is just going to guess that the addition of Vinny Curry may be very important when looking at the JPP trade. With Noah Spence, GMC, Curry and JPP all on the field at the same time, opponents, in theory, cannot double-team all four on each passing play.

Banking on Spence’s shoulder for that scenario. And I love the moves too but man are we top heavy. Would still like to see us get some more D-Line help in the draft

  2. BigHogHaynes Says:

It’s gonna be one hell’va training camp! CONTINUE TO BUILD A WALL ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BAY!

  3. Mr. Ed Says:

Benoit apparently doesn’t consider 8.5 sacks as a pass rusher’s production. Not concerned with Benoit’s opinion at all.

  4. William Walls Says:

    So, you’re sayin’ there’s a chance…

  5. lambchop Says:

    A little off-topic but……

The Jags and Titans are tweaking their jerseys this season. Why can’t we tweak ours and get rid of those horrendous alarm clock numbers? Other than that, the jersey looks good.

Would love to see an alternate black and red or black and pewter jersey. It would kinda resemble to 49ers and Saints alternate jerseys.

The Glazers should seriously do a social outreach with a fan survey next time they tweak the jersey. Or at the very least with the Season ticket holders……all 10 of em.

maybe in camp jpp will smack the doobich right out of hargreaves mouf !

lambchop – The Bucs can’t do anything with the uniform until next year I believe, hopefully they’ll scrap them and start over as the current uniforms are awful. At the very least they need to change the helmet so they can do throwback uniforms again.

  8. Bird Says:

Keep the helmet though. The terminator pirate skull is bad a$$

    The jerseys not so much.

  9. Buc4life Says:

I love the JPP move but we cannot rest thinking that he is the entire solution. If Chubb fall to us we must pick him, or if Buffalo or someone trades back with us grab ur DB and pick up Davenport later in the first round. The more good DEs we have the better our overall defense will be.

  10. Alan Says:

Great responses we have the best logo in the NFL but I agree the alarm clock digit numbers just look tacky. Still best uniforms in the league

  11. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

I would love to see an orange alternate jersey or a black even would be nice.

  12. Alan Says:

    Me too

  13. DBS Says:

Keep the helmets. Rest of the uniform is garbage.

  14. BringBucsBack Says:

C’mon, Chubb a better NFL pass-rusher than JPP? Does this guy receive a check for this oral refuse?

    Popsicle orange= not so much.
Burnt orange= sweet (it works for U of TN & others)

  15. DBS Says:

The jersey that was proud to be worn by 99% of fans was the previous jersey. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

  16. Cobraboy Says:

I would not be counting on Spence. If he can get and stay healthy it’s a bonus. But he has proven he cannot.

  17. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Well I do not read Benoit and now thanks to Joe I realize I haven’t missed anything.

That was just a stooooopid post!!!!

Chubb has about a 50-50 chance of not really being an impact player. That means he also has a 50% chance of being good…how much does that number drop if you’re betting he’ll contribute double digit sacks each year.

JPP has two double digit sack seasons including an amazing 16.5 sacks one year! 12.5 in another.

Chubb did get double digits his last two years…10 each year.

I certainly concede that Chubb could be better than JPP eventually. But the odds do not suggest that’s a really high probability.

Most of all though I never do what Benoit did in this comparison. Whenever I compare potential or early success of an NFL player to a legitimate success…when Chubb hits 16 sacks then we can compare him…or at minimum can we at least wait until he gets double digits. I frequently speak highly of Noah Spence’s potential. But I do not compare him to any star players…yet.

I just find it disrespectful to the veteran who has ACTUALLY ACHIEVED success to compare NO success…Chubb hasn’t even been drafted to them.

  18. Ndog Says:

Our jersey is unique and can be distinguished from all the others in the league. That was why it was changed from the old version, and they should not be altered in any way.

  19. StPeteBucsFan Says:

BTW the premise of this story is absurd as well. If Deacon Jones, Reggie White, or any great pass rusher was actually a better run stopper than pass rusher what freaking difference would it make….it would ADD to their success.

I mean I get the fact that if you’re recruiting a DE to primarily rush the passer, you want them to be able to rush the passer…as in 16.5 or 12.5 sacks…in fact as Joe has pointed out…last year’s 8.5 are acceptable. So now we’re going to whine that in addition to his pass rushing skills he’s an even better run stopper?

Bottom line to me is that Benoit is simply playing to the GMen base which obviously dwarfs the size of our base.

  20. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    NDOG

Sorry you lost me on that one. Are you saying because our unis are DISTINCTLY ugly and no other uni in the league is nearly as poor that makes it a good thing?

I certainly agree that our uni’s stand out and are “original” but not in a good way.

Give me the red and pewter and I deal with the boredom.

  21. Stanglassman Says:

I don’t agree with the premise of the article to begin with. The Bucs traded JPP for a 3rd and a swap in the 4th. That’s it. Chubb shouldn’t be in this equation.
If the Bucs picked 1st overall and trading that pick to the Giants for JPP and the announced Chubb would be their pick then this article by Benoit would make sense.
Look at the mid 3rd round players in this years draft and that’s who we gave up for JPP.

  22. unbelievable Says:

Current jerseys are atrocious. Simple as that.

    The previous versions were perfect.

  23. lambchop Says:

I like the helmet with large logo. When I look at the old helmets, the logo looks so tiny now and the old pewter looks too dark on the helmet. Just change the numbers and these jerseys will look 100 times better. I like how they integrated the creamsicle color into it.

  24. Rod Munch Says:

I like the helmets as well – I just want the Bucs to be able to do throwback uniforms. Also I’d love if they went with more of an orange/white/pewter look, but for some reason they want red – which I don’t get, it’s not a color you associate with this area until it’s red tide.

  25. LostinPa Says:

JPP is an upgrade until proven otherwise. Show me another buc that got 8.5 sacks last year.

  26. Buccfan37 Says:

Agree with Rod on color mix for uniforms. More orange, I don’t the red either. Numbers blah, this ain’t the year 2525.

  27. CarolinaBucFan Says:

I’m all on board if we get Chubb, but what would our d line rotation look like?
