Bucs Won A Seven-Team Sweepstakes

March 20th, 2018

“We won the battle, Mr. Glazer.”

Interesting free agency recruiting news dropped on Sirius XM NFL Radio yesterday.

Your Buccaneers jumped into a bidding war for one of their newest recruits.

The chatter on Movin’ The Chains came from defensive end Vinny Curry, who earned a Super Bowl ring and added three sacks to his resume last season.

Curry explained that he had seven suitors in free agency and then narrowed the list to five. Without talking about money, Curry said he chose the Bucs because of the sales pitch from new defensive line coach Brentson Buckner, which included an explanation of how he wanted to use the soon-to-be 30-year-old.

As Joe noted earlier, yesterday at One Buc Palace, Curry also said Buckner the key to his Tampa relocation.

But Joe plays in the real world, and it’s clear the Bucs were determined to win the Curry sweepstakes by throwing big dollars at him. The final contract pays Curry $9 million or so in 2018; The guy replacing Curry in Philadelphia, old friend Michael Bennett, has roughly a $7 million salary in 2018 and in 2019.

Good for the Bucs for addressing their run defense, which was woeful last year.

All hail Brentson Buckner…the soon to be new DC.

  2. tmaxcon Says:

The bucs did not win any sweepstakes they bought the sweepstakes by overpaying. That’s what failed franchises with worst winning percentage in nfl history have to do

  3. Guzziep Says:

Dontari Poe, Torrey Smith plus others to the Panthers limited cap space, Kurt Coleman and a new LB to NO limited cap space, Tampa fixes pass rush adding 3 guys with 7.5 sacks combined not really excited that we hot any better on defense, I do like the Jensen and Buckner signings, no way we make the playoffs this year 8 wins maybe, 6 seems most likely, we get a dominant RB maybe we get 9

  4. TeddyTB Says:

Just look at the deals for better players. Bucs fans don’t play yourselves we aren’t out the woods yet.

  5. BucFanFromOhio Says:

We get Chubb or Barkley and this team could really get turned around in a hurry now.

  6. JimmyJack Says:

Tmax call it overpaid. They went out and bought themselves a new line. It had to be done……This is not the way to build a line in this league to do it in one offseason but that’s the corner we got painted into.

You can expect to see four different faces a lot this year. Yeah, your boy McCoy will be there but let’s face it he was awful for the first 8 or so games last year. They should start phasing him out if he comes out ineffective again. Maybe if you can get him off the field more he can come in and be more effective with a lower workload.

  7. JimmyJack Says:

They bought three players they are going to draft three lineman probably and we will probably be trying to find any roster cut or waiver guy we can for Dline. I don’t care if McCoy is the only guy we bring back. No other lineman that played here last year is worth anything IMO.

  8. 813bucboi Says:

they didn’t have to talk money to drive up the price……sounds like he used those “other suitors” to drive up the price…..and as usual we over paid……and some think a 3rd and 6th for Quinn was overpaying!!!!!

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!…..NOPASSESIN2018!!!!!!…..GO BUCS!!!!

  9. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

So we paid more for a player who is not nearly as good as Bennett. Bummer. Ah well, Bennett will never return to Tampa. He was just stirring the pot.

  10. tmaxcon Says:

    Jimmyjack

As much as I agree with you that they will phase her out it does not change the damage he does in locker room. CANCER93 must go

  11. Waterboy Says:

6.5 mil a yr isn’t over paying. He has incentives in his contract that can push it up to 9 mil a yr.

  12. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I’ve decided to have a wait and see attitude about the free agent signings. Although I have my doubts about a couple, I’m going to be fair to most of them and see if they can impress me.

The lone exception though is our kicker.

I just know Licht will regret that signing. Handing the guy the kicking job for the next 2-3 years was a huge mistake, since he has blown it everywhere he’s gone.

I wanted competition for Murray. But this ain’t that. They are handing the guy the starting role…and that worked out so well the last two times.

  13. The Buc Realist Says:

Those in the know, like the pick up of Curry while keeping the picks that could be very crucial in the upcoming draft!!!!!!! While the line right now does not look like a front 4 pass rush terror, It does look like they can get some 2nd and long and 3rd and long looks!!!!!!!!!! That is when we see the LB’s blitz with great success!!!!!!

NFL GM Licht has really set the board for the draft!!!!!!!!

The Smoke screen was so thick that the sheep could not see and were jumping ship left and right!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. Tom Edrington Says:

See you in September, until then it’s all just a bunch of blather…..

  15. Waterboy Says:

“DE Vinny Curry’s deal with Bucs is 3 years, $23-million. Only first year salary of $6.5-million is guaranteed right now. Bucs could walk away with 1 year, $6.5m. Another $5-million guaranteed against injury now, fully guaranteed if he’s on roster on 5th day of 2019 league year.”

  16. Its_A_Tough_Buc_Life Says:

This guy said Donatari Poe and Torrey Smith to Carolina, like those are huge additions lol. And Kurt Coleman to New Orleans like that is putting the Saints over the edge.

  17. StPeteBucsFan Says:

And Curry was even less desired than Jensen. We’ve scored twice.

I read a story yesterday about Kirk Cousins and how he ended up at Minnesota.
The story got sidetracked though because Cousins agent also reps Jensen. The reporter was detailing the phone calls coming in for Cousins but twice as many calls were coming for Jensen!!!

We may have had a sneaky good FA season.

  18. Bobby M. Says:

He’s another value pickup….productive but nothing special…..We overpaid because we have no other choice. Our big signing was Jensen….I’m guessing we go 0-line again in rds 1 or 2. I’ve said this many times, there’s no way to fill all the holes on both sides of the ball so lets at least focus on dominating on at least one side. The offense is by far the closest to be dominant. If we can draft Nelson or Barkley, we’ll at least be able to control the clock to a degree and put up 25 pts per game….As a fan, i can view that as true progress even if we miss the playoffs. However….after this offseason, Lichts 5th, if we still cant move the ball….They are all done. After 5 offseasons….no matter how you slice or dice it, your team should have an identity at the very least. Its time to produce or clean house.

  19. RobertG Says:

He’s only making 6.5 million 2018. Ayers was scheduled to 6 mil

  20. JimmyJack Says:

Tmax…..This is the year that our new leaders take control. Nobody gives a crap about a leader that doesn’t bring it on Sundays.

McCoy was absolutely awful last year. Yeah, he came on a little bit and had a few good games but his teammates have to know his day is done.

Forget McCoy dude. This is not his team. Kwon and Jamie’s wear a C too ya know. But they haven’t been stepping up and taking control. Instead we have to hear about how good of a locker room guy Martin was……Really? Give me a break with that BS.

McCoys day is over and that’s why they got rid of most of the Dlineman that play next to him. They didn’t just randomly pick Allen and Curry. They wanted them both because they were teammates….Our leaders here need to get in the weight room with them two and let them know what the pecking order is. They need to STEP UP and LEAD.

Joe wrote a story of how Curry didn’t mention McCoy. That better not be a coindence. Them two with Kwon Winston, Evans2… need to be the new dictators here. And McCoy can still wear a C because you don’t disrespect. It’s not about the C anymore.

  21. Bucsfan951 Says:

^See waterboy’s explanation of the contract. He’ll make 9 mill if he hits all of his incentives (which I pray he does!)

  22. JimmyJack Says:

One question I got is who is going to get in Gholstons ear? That guy was awful last year…….I don’t know what college he went to but it must have been in one of those soft spread conferences.

That dude is too big to get pushed around. Man that guy needs to get his ass up on Gameday! I don’t give a crap if he gets one sack, when that guy is in I want to see a pile of lineman getting pushed in front of him……..Talk about Glendon statue??……Friggen how about that Gholston statue! Move your ass dude!

  23. tmaxcon Says:

    Jimmyjack

Until the bad character career loser cancer93 is out of locker room these poor young men have no chance… the disease is strong with thge cryin clown

  24. BucThis Says:

The only way we are somewhat successful this year is to play keep away from the defense……OUR defense. There was no way this defense was going to turn it around in one offseason. Draft Barkley or Nelson, if available, if not trade down and add additional picks.

FYI Chubb is no Reggie White or Jevon Kearse or even Joey Bosa for that matter. Rookie DE rarely have immediate impact their first year so why not draft one in 2nd or 3rd round and let buckner groom him.

  25. JimmyJack Says:

Hey I wonder who our rookie DT will be? He is going to get a steady dose of Marpet and Jensen coming at him all day.

Might only be two options. Starting DT or cut

  26. tmaxcon Says:

    jimmyjack

can’t blame gholston he was not allowed to go max effort. no way in hell captain blowout would tolerate max effort from any of his players.

  27. tmaxcon Says:

    Joe

clearly you are terrified of the cryin clown. you have been making excuses for cancer93 for years now… so any chance after they run the fool you can open up about how bad it really was during the cancer93 led basement years.

  28. JimmyJack Says:

Tmax….I already told you what’s up.

These young guys we got are either winners or losers. The rookie status and second year status is all fine and dandy. These guys starting to get three,4,5 years in now and they are done being young players.

They are now our young veterans and there are no excuses anymore. McCoy came out last year(like I said) and started the season like garbage. He is done bro.

At this point blaming McCoy will be an excuse. This team now belongs to Kwon,Winston,Evans….and whoever else is leading behind the scenes. They all know it too.

This is their year to officially take the team away from Gerald. In fact they probably already did when they ran Baker outta town.

The fanbase is done with excuses, either these guys step up and get all 53 guys playing ferocious hungry determined football……if not they just aren’t leaders, they are losers……if not the franchise gets turned on its tail end yet again and w3 can hunker down for another 16 years….It’s put up or shut up time.

  29. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

    @Waterboy…

Bringing the heat! Well done sir on the true accurate dirt on the Curry contract. It was well structured, and a great pitch by Buckner!

    Go Bucs!

  30. JimmyJack Says:

Tmax….I can blame Gholston. But my point is that somebody needs to rip that guy aside and tell him what’s up….If he ain’t gonna up his hame and start using his huge frame to affect games he needs to get run off.

Same with any other player that plays soft ass football. I think they kept Will Clarke for a reason. I expect him to give us some hard nosed snaps this year.

And while they are at it…..Whoever is in our Dlineman’s ears, they may kindly let McCoy know he can help carry the pads for the rookies….But not for the Lineman. This line is too soft currently and needs to work harder

  31. 813bucboi Says:

@realist says: While the line right now does not look like a front 4 pass rush terror, It does look like they can get some 2nd and long and 3rd and long looks!!!!!!!!!!

it wouldn’t matter because incompetent smitty will still have his CB’s playing 12yards off the ball allowing an easy pitch and catch for a 1st down!!!!!!!…..why run the ball when you can throw on smitty’s lousy defense all day long!!!!!!!!

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!!….NOPASSESIN2018!!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!!

  32. tmaxcon Says:

    jimmyjack

nothing would make me happier than to tell you next year you were right but I just don’t think you are accepting how strong the disease is with cancer93…. cancer93 clearly has glazer support and the media (hacks) in town are in total fear of cancer93 they overlook and make excuses for loafing, quitting, being mauled in run game, celebrating loses and disappearing when it matters most yet pounce on Baker because he followed his captains lead in celebrating loses. the disease and force is strong with the crying clown…

  33. 813bucboi Says:

    JIMMYJACK

    I agree….no more excuses!!!!!!

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!…..NOPASSESIN2018!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!

  34. JimmyJack Says:

Tmax…..Everybody who have been caught playing soft football on defense are all gone….except Gholston. McCoy has not affected anybody on this roster.

Next year is a new era where our new team leaders must take control. If these guys are true winners they will not let McCoy get in their way. If he does then they are garbage leaders anyway and will never win crap.

If this team comes out and plays the same brand of soft football I will lose faith that Winston and our other young guys are good enough to ever turn this franchise around…..Letting one guy stand in your way and defeat you is incredibly weak and a pure excuse. I’m done with all the excuses year after year. These guys are veterans now. STEP UP!!

And I don’t care if I’m wrong in the W-L column…..I just cannot stand this soft puzzy football any longer….If we need more talent so be it, better coaching so be it…..But we will never win playing physically soft football with no fight.

  35. IsrBuc Says:

Waiting on the first FA to honestly say “they paied ne the most” instead of all the crap

  36. TOM Says:

Now if we could get rid of overpaid sackless Gholston, that would be nice.

  37. JimmyJack Says:

And th3 more I think about it the more I like what they are doing on our Dline. No, Quinn, Bennet, Peppers, Suh etc…….You know what? Those guys aren’t going to come in here and worry about the attitude of the team and trying to build up rookies and be leaders……..Them guys just wanna go where there’s a good line already in place and they can just do their job and be left alone…….while they chase a ring.

It’s like when Simeon Rice came here. He wanted to help a team dominate. He wasn’t intrested in going somewhere and doing all this culture change nonsense.

Quinn Bennett etc would probably give us one good lineman getting chipped all day playing next to a bunch of soft ass players on a losing defense……Get this defense playing fast and ferocious….then start adding talent. One talented stud can’t cover up an 11 man D playing soft as a unit

  38. JimmyJack Says:

Tom he has guaranteed money so he will be in Training Camp. If he can’t hack it and you got some UDFA playing better and tougher I say cut his ass.

Though the Glazers might get pretty danged angry about that one.

  39. Pickgrin Says:

    JimmyJack says:
“McCoy was absolutely awful last year”

That’s total and utter bullsh!t. McCoy had a good year in 2017 and to so boldly state otherwise means you are either just full of it – or have no idea what you are looking at on a football field.

Curry was about the best DE signing we could have managed this offseason without giving up draft picks for a trade which I’m glad we didn’t do. There just wasn’t much out there to choose from and over-pay this year – which is probably just as well because we need to be building both of our lines largely through the draft – not with high priced, over-rated free agents.

  40. Not there yet Says:

They did not overpay and it’s a bogus thought especially since your comparing an old expiring contact of Bennett to a new 2018 contact. You’ve been telling us for months that they should overpay for anyone they want but can’t accept a good deal when you see it?

  41. Pickgrin Says:

And Gholson could have been (SHOULD have been) cut prior to Saturday with no penalty to the Bucs. They chose to get rid of Ayers instead which I don’t understand at all unless they think he’s basically damaged goods and too unreliable which is the likelihood.

  42. DB55 Says:

cancer93 clearly has glazer support and the media (hacks) in town are in total fear of cancer93 they overlook and make excuses for loafing, quitting, being mauled in run game, celebrating loses and disappearing when it matters most yet pounce on Baker because he followed his captains lead in celebrating loses. the disease and force is strong with the crying clown…
    ————
This is so true. Bengals have a strong dline and they signed Baker within 24 hours? And the bengals do not allow soft lazy bums on the field. The bengals literally have straight gangstas on the def. like actual real life thugs. Not the thugs you southern are scared of like Bennet (nice funny guy) or Blount(man with an attitude) or Talib (a man) naw shun the bengals got killas on the squad and they literally try to kill you on the field as well.

    #Perspective
    #NoIceCream

  43. JimmyJack Says:

Pickgrin……I’m calling it 8 games but I may be off by a game give or take.

But you go back and watch the first half of last season and you tell me how good he was. And I’ve been a McCoy supporter even though he ain’t never been clutch but that first half of 2017 was bad bad football from McCoy.

  44. JimmyJack Says:

And the way I understood it is that they could not cut Gholston. His contr@ct was guaranteed…..A poster here told me that, forget who.

But if they could have cut him they should have IMO. And I really liked Will. But he was very bad last year.

  45. JJBucFan Says:

We only “overpaid” because it is free agency and there are no true bargains. These are all players that the teams let go for one reason or another. Get over it you bunch of whiney babies. The market is what the market is. The fact is we are considerably better than we were 1 month ago. Should Cousins be making more than Brady? Of course not- but he is, it is so funny to watch the same people come in here and bash the players over and over with the same BS, like you guys know more than the FO of teams, players, scouts. Now if you want to bash the coaches—I’m in!!

  46. Pickgrin Says:

    The “poster” was wrong Jimmy.

Bucs had an out to cut Gholston with no penalty or guarantees whatsoever if it was before the 5th day of the league year (3/18). But now his 6.5M IS fully guaranteed this year. Bad decision IMO. Maybe Buckner is the coach who can finally get this player who looks like Tarzan but plays like Jane on passing downs to actually breath on a QB once or twice this year.

McCoy played just fine the whole year in 2017. YOU are the one who needs to go re-watch 2017 games more closely if you think otherwise. If you can stomach watching the Buccaneers suck all over again that is.

  47. Eric Says:

Not really the fearsome foursome, steel curtain, or purple people eaters, but if they could not fold like a cheap suit with the lead we might get by.

  48. BigHogHaynes Says:

DB55 : you drinking too much of Realist juice! Ya’ll really need to stop the madness …team management has refused to build a DLine and you guy go after one player …you must have never played the game …so sick of the dumb sh* t! We are now building an OLine! McCoy ain’t no one man gang …it’s a team sport !! They say I have an agenda …im not the only one!! CONTINUE TO BUILD A WALL!!

  49. Mike Johnson Says:

Lets welcome back some old friends..with a brand new name..The Tampa Bay EXCUSES!!

  50. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Pickgrin

Let’s get all conspiratorial and plot some speculation.

Gholston is considered an adequate to good run stopper with poor pass rushing skills.

Our two new DL signees are the best run stoppers in the league. Buckner would love to make us impossible to run against and force other teams to become one dimensional…that would also indirectly help our pass rush. We have the talent to become a truly formidable run defense in 2018.

Curry has flashed ability to disrupt the passer. I think one of the reasons we got him in that seven team sweepstakes was for a reason that TMAX and others who whine about no FA’s wanting to come to Tampa never consider….OPPORTUNITY.

Buckner simply reminded Curry of our reputation of struggling to get to the QB.
He tells Curry what a shame it is that Curry was on such a deep and loaded DL that they pulled him off the field on 3rd down. That won’t happen to Curry in Buckner’s D. He’ll get a chance to really rack up some numbers.

I mean who is getting pulled on 3rd down and a passing situation…Curry or Gholston?

  51. JimmyJack Says:

Yeah Pick I’m not watching that garbage again.

But we will just disagree on this one. Maybe I was overly critical saying McCoy was awful but he was not impacting the game like he is capable of. I thought it was the least effective he has been since he came here.

If you have a different opinion that’s cool. I’m not into arguing too much about McCoy, he did have some good games last year. We shall see what he brings next year. I think McCoy could really benefit from getting some better depth at DT behind him that can take some snaps and lessen his workload. I don’t think it’s an amonaly the Gerald’s numbers are trending downward….The young players we are grooming on that line behind McCoy are much more important to the core of this team then McCoy right now.

  52. JimmyJack Says:

St Pete……Right now we really can’t count on Gholston for any snaps.

He was just terrible last year. Whatever we see on the field next year has to be better then what Gholston gave us. If that’s an improved Gholston, I’m cool with it.

The way I see it there is nobody we had last year I’m counting on except McCoy. Looking in the future I see our line consisting of McCoy, the three guys we just signed, and three rookies, maybe somebody you find of the streets. I’m not relying on anybody that had anything to do with this line last year.

LIKE I SAID … TAMPA IS A TOP DESTINATION FOR FREE AGENTS.

Every year, many of you whine and complain and LIE about Tampa … you also foolishly think free agents care about winning, when really, they don’t. This is a JOB to most NFL players and therefore they care about money, weather, lifestyle, state taxes, etc.

It’s not any different than if YOU were a real estate agent and had your choice of working in your company’s Tampa office or your company’s Foxborough office … you’d choose the Tampa office as it offers a better lifestyle and more money.

It’s not that hard to put yourself into the mind of players, coaches and GMs … yet many of you are such rabid team fans that you really can’t conceive of the FACT that most players view this as a mere job and don’t care about winning, playoffs and the like … they want to get paid, live somewhere nice, be able to have fun on their off-days, etc.

I’d sincerely say that less than 10% of NFL players care about their “playing legacy” … the guys that do are the guys gunning for the HOF … and there are very, very, very few of those guys … most players are just dudes earning a paycheck by playing a game, know they have no shot at making the HOF, and just want the best situation.

I told ya’ll Tampa would be a good destination despite it’s bad record last year, and it was … we beat out 6 other teams for Curry, got the best C available in free agency, re-signed Grimes who could have easily went to a contender, etc.

I understand a lot of you are rabid team fans, but, calm down people and try to live life in a logical way … with reason, sensibility and common sense.

no one wants to play for a lame duck staff

Have had no one tell Joe this, but guessing agents are steering clients away from the Bucs for this reason. They see a GM with only months left on his contract and a 5-11 team and agents see uncertainty in the near future.

curry and Jensen are cashing out!!!!!….Jensen was only a starter for 1 year a contract year mind you and curry just got a ring…..his production is on the same level as ayers……pleased that we got Jensen because protecting the franchise is top priority but we could’ve did better at the DE position…..and the bucs are the only ones giving grimes that kind of money…..he could’ve played for a contender but chose the money instead……

So does the “C” on GMC’s jersey stand for “Captain” or does it stand for Cancer93? or something else?

Doesn’t the team elect team Captains each year? Maybe he will not be selected team captain. A true team Captain would have stepped to swaggy very early in the season……not near the end of the season due to a game costing penalty. Being a team captain carries responsibilities and the players know it.

I was right and my comment should be required reading at the start of every free agency …

It cracks me up that people think players are all about their legacy and winning games and making it to the playoffs as they are NOT … the vast majority is about earning great money, living in a nice place and having fun on their down-time with their family.

Fans are silly … they actually think players care as much as they do … the players do not for the most part.

For every Jameis, a guy who obviously thinks he can be a HOF’er and is all about football, there are 10 Jay Cutler types …

Tampa will ALWAYS be a solid free agent destination due to the weather and no state income taxes, period.

  65. Capt.Tim Says:

    NFLnut.
You are a lil off there, buddy
Players very much want to go to playoff teams.
They make great money during the playoffs!

While the Bucs do have a few draws- their playoff drought definitely hurts them
And potenially a lame duck GM and coach also is a big turn off to free agents

^ I disagree and stand by my statement 100%. I never said that no players care about the playoffs; I said MOST players don’t care about the playoffs. In fact, I could also say that some players prefer NOT to play in the playoffs and would rather take the early vacation … the NFL is nothing more than a job to many, many, many players.

    Wait a minute
Some of you said that we didn’t want to over pay but Bennett the starter went for 7$ million and we paid $9 for the backup

    Hahahah

    Yea don’t overpay Bucs
Some of these fans will believe you lowered prices at the stadium

I love that Vinny, wearing a SB ring, has incentives tied to sacks and playoffs. That’s the absolute best way to make a dude with a winning attitude and culture want to keep it up in his new digs. Big time kudos.

Joe, I don’t mean to hijack the post, so pardon me. But I think the statute ran out on Jameis and his alleged follies in Arizona. Would be nice to confim no suit filed, and now start a full bore media blitz to get to the bottom of it.

^^That is Joe^^ you have written several stories lamening NFL taking so long. I have figured it was tied to the law, which has run its course for Statute of Limitations for a civil suit. So frankly, I think the NFL investigation “for the shield” can move fairly quickly. The issue, as I’ve though all along, is if the young man lied about the number of folks in the car. But it’s time to wrap this up IF there is no suit filed. I’ll add that “Kate” who no longer works for Uber I hear, having not filed a suit, really has MORE credibility now…with the NFL…as she is not a gold digger and clearly not in it for money via civil suit. So this lady talks and the NFL listens, or this is dead. But I don’t see any “settlement” IF there is indeed no civil suit. My take. Media, take it way.
