Mike Glennon, Backups And The Bucs

February 28th, 2018

Reportedly unemployed soon.

Joe can see this coming right down Central Avenue.

Today, per several reports out of the Second City, the Bears plan to release former Bucs starter Mike Glennon, who for two years served as the No. 2 Bucs quarterback, behind America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.

Choo… choo!

I hear the train a comin’
It’s rolling round the bend
And I ain’t seen the sunshine since I don’t know when

Choo… choo!

Today, both on the podium and behind the curtains for Joe and other Bucs beat reporters, AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht and Dirk Koetter talked about a need for QB backups. Koetter used the plural form of the word “backup” — and both sang the same song as they did for Brent Grimes; they like Ryan Fitzpatrick and they want him back but

Depending on what Fitz wants to do, the Bucs could be looking at Ryan Griffin at the No. 2 backup to Jameis. You know, Ryan Griffin, the guy who has a grand total of zero snaps in a regular season game?

Given the fact Jameis has this Uber investigation over an alleged crotch grab hanging over his head — Joe asked Licht if Jameis has been interviewed yet by NFL goons and Licht said he didn’t know; with all due respect to Licht, Joe doesn’t buy that for a second — a backup quarterback is now, shockingly, a need.

And since Nick Foles came off the bench and led the Eagles to a Super Bowl title, the price for a backup signal-caller just went up. Now more funds must be allocated to a guy you pray does nothing more than fart in team meetings. Previously, those same funds could have been used to lure a running back, or a guard, or a corner, or a defensive end. Dang.

As for Glennon, Joe is almost willing to bet you will see Glennon wearing those dreaded Bucs alarm clock numbers this fall.

Just as Johnny Cash famously sang, Joe can see that train a comin.’

Choo… choo!

    I’d take him back as a back up…no problem…

  2. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

Hmmm. Ink Ryan Fitzpatrick, not Glennon, come March 14th.

    Go Bucs!

  3. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

Not a lot of better options. Too many QB hungry teams – Bridgewater and Bradford will be signed by teams looking for startings (if the vikings go with Keenum) AJ Mcarron looking for a starting opportunity as well.

Bucs will have the options of Glennon, Fitz or signing a different less than mediocre QB.

Personally id stick with Fitz, but Glennon also knows the system and I would take him over others

  4. Mike Johnson Says:

Fitz over Glennon anyday. But I get this feeling fitz will go to the highest payin gun..which will not be Tampa. Welcome back Mike G.

  5. Greg Says:

They were prepared to give Glenn and starter money to keep him as a backup And I don’t see anyone signing him as a clear starter. He still is in his prime age wise and now we can get them cheaper than what we were prepared to offer just last year. He knows the offense. And we will need somebody capable of starting once the suspension comes down for Jameis.

  6. Bucsfanman Says:

Not the worst choice given his playbook knowledge. However, I still like “The Beard” over him.

  7. JonBuc Says:

Glennon is hard on the eyes, less mobile than Dan Fouts and probably wouldn’t win a single game in relief. Licht’s Out dodged a bullet when Glennon didn’t sign his 8 million/year offer from the Bucs ( Bears even more foolhardy ). But as was the case with Doug Martin, Licht will probably insist on paying full freight for a return of The Giraffe 🦒

  8. LakeLand Says:

6-16 as a NFL starter, and he’s being discussed as a backup.

    smh

This. Mike Glennon is equivalent to losing your erection during sex. Dan Fouts however, would have atleast slung the rock all over the field and won games for us. Basically things Glennon will never do

  10. BUCKMAN Says:

PUT THE OLD TIRE (GLENN) BACK ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE CAR, EVEN THO IT GOT KNOTS AND BANDAGE ALL OVER IT !!! IT WILL HAVE TO DOOOOOO………LOL…HERE WE GO AGAIN …NO S/B IN 2018 ..FIRE THE WHOLE BUNCH !!!

  11. Joe Blahak Says:

frig that…he’s proven that he sucks…Griffin is better

  12. Defense Rules Says:

Hopefully this is just an early April Fool’s Day joke Joe (tomorrow’s March 1st, not April 1st). Bucs finally get a solid backup (Fitz) who can actually HELP Jameis mature AND who can WIN games if Jameis is out of the lineup (for whatever reason). We’ve seen enough from Mike Glennon to know that he’ll win about one-third of his starts (if that) & doesn’t really have enough experience himself to help Jameis much at all. Nice guy to be sure (like LOTS of ex-Bucs were ‘nice guys’) but Mike’s not the answer to our backup QB situation. And BTW, Ryan Griffen may have ZERO starts, but we’ll never know what he might be able to do until he does start. I have a suspicion that he’d do better than Glennon at running the Bucs’ offense.

  13. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I do believe I’m learning to figure out which Joe writes an article, lol. Hi, Lee.

  14. zzbucs Says:

Not an easy situation till we have a clear situation on the UBER/Jameis novel…… If he gets suspended for let´s say 6 weeks…I would go for a QB that can compete seriously against Jameis, like T Bridegwater if he can perform, you have a good asset to trade next season or even trade jameis…….I don´t see how we can have any expectation with Fitz or Glennon, I think both are good backup players, they are not starting QB for a long period

  15. Onetrickpony Says:

    Zzbucs
What he said, problem is when will this uber thing be settled is the question

  16. Rod Munch Says:

Glennon is a very good backup QB for the Bucs as he already knows the system and doesn’t put a voodoo curse on the starters to get them injured (unlike some Harvard nerd we all know).

  17. Pickgrin Says:

    Rather have Fitz.

If Fitz wants to go elsewhere though – Glennon makes the most sense considering how well he already knows the offense and has good relationships with most of the players as well. (including Jameis)

  18. Lord Cornelius Says:

I’d rather have Fitz or even take a shot on Griffin or a late round pick for development.

  19. tmaxcon Says:

glennon is a proven failure not a backup… he is NOT an experienced backup where do you fools make this crap up at… he has extremely limited experience as an in game backup. he has entered the game has a backup qb 3 times in his ENTIRE career. Last time I checked even the optimistic delusional nuthuggers require more than 3 games to listed as an EXPERIENCED backup… All you everything is positive clowns just make crap up to feel good about failure.

  20. sBucs Says:

Rest assured whatever decision the Bucs make will ultimately suck.

  21. DBS Says:

That is unless you want to go by the famous tmax list of people he had to work with. And they were all a POS. Murphy ,Bell, Winslow, VJax ,Martin, Underwood and more. Of course Dotson. All infected byCancer93 and the owners. It was all No excuses with the defense giving up 31 points a game. Just like they let Seattle run down the field and win the game.Just Glennon. But Winston? Now that is another story. Which is 100% BS. Because the Organization causes all to regress.
And Winston has had the same OC and QB coach.

  22. JimmyJack Says:

Rather go into the season with Fitzpatrick. The upside with Glennon is he is a better option for the future.

He could be efficient as a game manager which is what I would want from the 2nd stringer if this team ever becomes a contender.

  23. 813bucboi Says:

I don’t care…..neither fitz nor glennon can take us all the way……

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!…..GO BUCS!!!!!!

  24. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

    FitzMagic > MG8.

MG had his chance. He blew it. Bye bye 👋

  25. tmaxcon Says:

    DBS

glennon has been given every chance in the world and could not beat out josh mccown and failed miserably in chicago. there is no more defense for he heartless loser.

  26. tmaxcon Says:

you guys and the bring back every ex bum are completely entertaining though so keep up the stupidity.

  27. Alanbucsfan Says:

Glennon has stunk since his first start against Cardinals years ago when defense played their hearts out and Glennon threw 2 picks to Patrick Peterson in 4th qtr to lose game… he hasn’t improved…and worse- he won’t help Jameis improve

  28. Tony from Los Angeles Says:

    What??

I’m sorry – bring back the guy who has failed twice as a starter for two different teams?

    Uh… why?

Because he “knows the playbook”? That’s the worst reason I’ve ever heard. Nick Foles had one of the best seasons as a starter in NFL history a few years ago. Glennon isn’t even in the same stratosphere as Foles. If the Bucs sign Glennon and Jameis misses games – al the Bucs will be playing for is the #1 overall pick.

There are SOOOOO many veteran QB’s available this offseason that are leaps and bounds better than Glennon.

I did a quick scan of available free agent QBs – Glennon didn’t even make my top ten (and I did not include Cousins and other obvious starter free agent QBs).

Just say NO, Licht. He stinks. Just say NO.

  29. Bradinator Says:

But, but, Johnny Manziel is available. Why would anyone consider Glennon when Johnny Football is on the table?! Ok, that was sarcasm.

  30. Mr. Ed Says:

I would hope we see Fitz.

Glennon makes me puke. Duminik reaches for his gangly, long wind-up, no pocket awareness, NC State butt in a 3rd round ripe with other choices.

Glennon proved that he sucks. He does hold a clipboard well, I’d give him that.

    Keep Fitz.
