Did Lavonte David Get Hosed?

December 20th, 2017

Short end of the stick?

Joe was getting Twitters last night (@JoeBucsFan) from Bucs fans who were outraged that stud outside linebacker Lavonte David was screwed by the Pro Bowl selection process.

(David was named “second alternate” at outside linebacker for next month’s game in Orlando.)

Remember, fans’ votes only count for one-third. Players and coaches get the other 66.6 percent.

It seems Jenna Laine of ESPN leans towards the outraged Bucs fans who believe David got the shaft.

In 11 games this season, David has five forced fumbles, second-most in the league, and his five fumble recoveries are the most in the league. In fact, David’s five fumble recoveries are tied with J.J. Watt and Justin Tuck for most among any player in a single season in the past 10 years.

Joe answered one unnerved Bucs fan; if David played on a winning team, things would be different.

It’s not right, but guys with winners get more of a benefit of the doubt than players on teams playing woefully below expectations.

Chandler Jones (Cardinals), Ryan Kerrigan (Redskins) and Anthony Barr (Vikings) are the outside linebackers named to the NFC squad.

There’s only three players on the bucs worthy of the Probowl:

    Grimey

    LVD

    KWON

    that’s it!!!!!

it’s a crying shame Mr GMC aka “Mr Softie” gets selected again. I guess all the crying and wincing in pain of the field is good for something like fooling the masses and probowl voting.

  2. Sg5821 Says:

And David played in fewer games than the rest of the players. Yes he was hosed

  3. jtwright Says:

    How about Anger?

  4. jtwright Says:

Isnt the problem that as an OLB he is being compared to rushing LB’s like Kerrigan and Jones?

  5. Bucsfanman Says:

You could make a case for him above Barr and Kerrigan but Jones has 15.5 sacks. He missed some games too. Maybe that was a factor along with being on a horrific defense.
    We still love you LVD!

  6. WyomingBucsFan Says:

Why do fans and media think David is so great? I mean what has He ever done? This guy is not any better then 70% of NFL linebackers. He is a pretty good pursuit linebacker. He also does ok in coverage. Is he a leader? Does he shed blocks and get TFL’s consistany? Does he make it home on his blitzes 50% of the time? Does he score on defense more than once every 5 years? Just because he is one of only a handfull of competing players on this team does not make him a game changer.

    very good points

    @ WyomingBucsFan

    What games are you watching

LVD is always there making big plays and especially at times when you need them (not GMC)

    LVD is always causing fumbles

LVD is always in the back field chasing down the ball carriers

LVD is a helluva Covered LB…..very few LB can play like him

    LVD is dependable

I mean…..what more could you ask from your LB?

  9. DoNUTS Says:

If you look at NFL history, this is the way it has always been. The players on losing teams that have players on the cusp of the Pro Bowl do not get selected. Winning does count and when this franchise makes that the priority then things will change. I think the lack of effort for Campbell made me question whether this team was serious about lifting the Lombardi trophy again. It takes a team to do that and they thought they could get it done with no top 5 talent on either DEF-OFF lines. This is a staple item for every championship team. The skill position players cant excel without it.

  10. Bradinator Says:

I hate that pass rushing “OLBs” are in the same category as an actual OLBs. They are DEs, they don’t drop in coverage or run sideline to sideline. The only stat they are held to are sacks (you know, that thing that happens when a defensive player tackles the QB when he drops back to pass? That is what a “sack” is. Thought I should clarify for this for Bucs fans. I saw other teams do it. Really!). Honestly, who in the league would actually say “I’d much rather have Ryan Kerrigan than LVD? Nobody except maybe Ryan Kerrigan’s Mom.

  11. WyomingBucsFan Says:

LVD is a decent pursuit LB but is terribly undersized. He gets pushed 10 yards back and watches the runner go by. Then he gets on his horse and chases. Some times he will surprise a guy and punch a ball out. That’s not being a great LB.

  12. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ WyomingBucsFan

Any LB is gonna get blown up by a 300 pound offensive lineman or the schemes they call “blocking” in the NFL if that’s what you’re referring to.

I don’t see what you’re seeing so I’ll have to disagree with you

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Shame on Buc “fans” who chastise GMC’s selection. That has nothing to do with LVD…..I think the deck is stacked against LVD and has been….I don’t know what he has to do to win.
    Buc Pro Bowl Linebackers:

    LVD
    Derrick Brooks
    Hardy Nickerson
    Hugh Green
    Dave Lewis
    Shelton Quarles

  14. AC Says:

    @WyomingBucsFan
this aint the 90’s where all LB’s are 250 lbs plus..smh stupidest take/comment i have read in a minute. Might go back to skipping over the comments because clearly some of you guys are on drugs

  15. WyomingBucsFan Says:

Also look for Beckwith to move to MLB and Kwon to slide over to weakside when LVD’s contract is up. Kwon has better power and thump the LVD and is actually faster.

  16. The Graham Tram Says:

I think this ties into the whole moral victory thing. This is a bad defense, the last thing they need is a bunch of players going to the probowl. Right the ship, then recognize star performers.

  17. mark2001 Says:

Newsflash…this is what happens when no one respects your team. They don’t see the guys play, as they don’t see the games. There is no buzz about them during the season…just derision and laughter. So why is there anything surprising about it?

  18. Joel Says:

Amazing how our D wasn’t any worse without McCoy on Monday…

  19. 813bucboi Says:

LVD is the only player that deserves to be in the PB from the bucs…..simple as that!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  20. WyomingBucsFan Says:

    @Joel

    Or without the famed LVD….

  21. HowToSpellRhonde Says:

    @ Wyoming

Look up LVD’s TFL stats and sit in the corner like a dummy child.

  22. SB Says:

Put the Crack pipe down Wyoming. I didn’t think they had that problem over there.

  23. Mike Johnson Says:

You kiddin me? With a 4-12 record, I’m even surprised GMC made the Pro Bowl. However the players voted him in. And you gotta respect that. They know more than us. Our Bucs rightfully deserve where they are..at the bottom of the toilet bowl!! You are..what your record says you are. This is what I luv about the NFl. No hidin, no fakin and no cover-ups.

  24. WyomingBucsFan Says:

Hahaha, say something critical about this team’s personal and your some kind of delusional drug ueser. Maybe you fans are the delusional one’s.

  25. Joeypoppems Says:

The team youre on has nothing to do with it. If it was about that then GMC wouldnt get voted in 6 straight years.

The problem with LVD is the position he plays. The NFL lumps all the pass rushers into that position. Sacks are the flashy stat so if you dont get sacks you dont get votes. Its simple.

Does he deserve to get voted in? Yes. Did he get hosed? No.

  26. Phil Says:

I’m not sure anyone on a 4-10 team deserves to be in the Pro Bowl.

  27. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ WyomingBucsFan

I know it’s cold and nothing to do there in Wyoming (I know cause I lived there for a few years in Cheyenne)

……but take that suggestion of HowToSpellRhonde

  28. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    Yes he was hosed.

  29. derrickbrooksforGM Says:

This linebacker group isn’t very good honestly. Can fill holes to stop the run, can shed blocks very well, decent in coverage but stopping the run effectively… that’s like linebacker 101.

  30. derrickbrooksforGM Says:

    er meant can’t

  31. John Says:

Lavonte and Kwon are overrated and are constantly being pushed around. I’ll give it to Lavonte for getting those strips down but that’s about it. It’s hard to really evaluate any position without having a d line though.

  32. DB55 Says:

    Wyoming

He’s actually scored 2 TDs in the past 5 yrs. truth be told is you can put lvds stats along side Derrick Brooks and you can not be sure who is who unless you have the names next to the stats. LVD beats Brooks in every category except Ints. He was on pace with Schiano but fell of drastically after that.

LVD is the best player on the defense bar none.

    Who your favorite player? Mr.#54

  33. Bucsfan951 Says:

Wyoming: look up David’s stats and compare them to luke kuechly. David has 52 less tackles, 12 less pass defensed and 5 less ints but has 8 more sacks, 1 more safety and 12 more forced fumbles. Very comparable stats. Don’t know what the tfl is between the two. To say he’s overrated or overhyped is just crazy talk!

  34. Pelbuc Says:

You know who got hosed? The fans once again year after year. Terrible GM and coaching staff not to mention lots of busts, I.e. Hargreaves, Baker, Martin, Sweezy, Spence, Ward…..Housecleaning time!

  35. mark2001 Says:

And Pel….let us not forget that Jameis’s contract will be running down in a couple years. Can you imagine what would have happened in Green Bay or New England if they hadn’t developed Rodgers or Brady properly, and were left with moving on to someone else because of poor coaching? You know, it can happen.
