Godwin Was Not The Intended Target

Folks who bellyache about Dirk Koetter and his play-calling will have someone to chew on during the all too long offseason.

The game-winning 39-yard pass from America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, to Chris Godwin? That was not what Koetter called.

With 15 seconds left and no timeouts, Koetter noted there likely wasn’t time for a play and a spike to set up a field goal. So Koetter called for a down-and-out to the left, right in front of the Bucs bench for a receiver to step out of bounds in order to allow the field goal team on the field.

America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, had other ideas. The gunslinger in him took over.

Jameis saw Godwin in a one-on-one situation and believed Godwin could not just get separation but could score. So Jameis ignored Koetter’s wishes and decided to go for it all down the right sideline.

It worked, much to Jameis’ relief.

“I trusted Chris Godwin and by the grace of God he caught it,” Jameis said.

“When Jameis let that thing go to the other side, I was like, ‘Oh, my God!'” Koetter said.

“I could hear the coaches yelling, “NNNOOO!” Jameis added.

And it worked. Finally the Bucs won a close game.

“We were due I guess,” Koetter said.

That was 11 plays, 95 yards.

That’s why the Bucs drafted Jameis No. 1 overall.

And America celebrates!

The only meaningful thing Desean Jackson has done this year is hide Chris Godwin down the depth chart…..

  2. JWBUCS Says:

What thrilled me the most about this game is how hard every team member played and the Never Give Up Attitude….This Bucs Team earned this Win!

  3. BringBucsBack Says:

Jameis also called the 3 (should have been 6) TERRIBLE pics too, right?

Jameis won a game with Brate on the same play. Koetter keeps playing for FGs. So this just proves Koetter and bj have been holding jameis back from his true potential. Imagine if jameis had an oline and a running game. Good lort!

  5. AlteredEgo Says:

The guy has been playing hurt the last two games….impressive smarts and toughness…find his mentality is the draft

  6. El_Buc941 Says:

Joe how does this sound….trade desean Jackson FOR….A LEGIT PASS RUSHER.maybe say for ummm…Michael Bennet?or Adrian Clayborne?desean obviously isn’t connecting with Jameis’,unlike Godwin on the other hand.i think we will be fine without desean and we could trade him to a team that is seeking that missing piece on offense.we get a legit DE,Chris Godwin steps in as #2 wr.win win.oh and we can pick up another pass rusher with the #9 pick.

  7. USFBUC Says:

While I wanted the draft position I have to admit that was a beautiful throw and catch. Hopefully we see a lot more of that next year. Hopefully Winston spends all offseason working on his mastery of the game and maybe we move to a system like Manning had with the Colts where he basically ran the offense

  8. Pa Privateer Says:

More Winston to Godwin = touchdown PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!

If we can hope for this type of play every week, then we can expect to win every week.

I live in Steeler country, those fans think they will win every week. And there team rarely lays a goose egg.

  9. BrianBucs Says:

Like I said before, with Jameis you are always going to get a whole lot of good mixed in with a whole lot of bad. That’s just who he is and how he plays

  10. USFBUC Says:

El_buc – I don’t see us finding anyone to trade a good DE for Jackson. We might be able to move him for a draft pick though.

  11. Erik w/ Clean Athletics Says:

But we still had to get lucky to even get to that point bcuz Jameis threw a surefire pick on the 1st throw of that drive. SMH. That was such a (mentally) weak throw in that situation and luckily, they dropped the ball somehow…

  12. El_Buc941 Says:

@USFBUC From what I’m hearing it’s Michael Bennett’s last year in seattle.also it’s the end of Jimmy Graham’s contract.Russel Wilson needs a deep threat,we need a pass rusher.makes sense.or we could call Oakland and try to trade player for player for Marshawn Lynch.i been hearing they are getting tired of him and his mentality and swag could be useful rubbing off on some players *McCoy*cough*cough

  13. Rod Munch Says:

Wow, OK then I amend what I said earlier when I said this was the first time all season Dirk didn’t play for the FG…. I guess even here he played for the FG and Winston decided he had enough and made a play on his own.

Good on Winston for making it happen. Maybe for 2018 the Bucs will get an actual OC that can work with Winston and the offense for the first time since his rookie year. Or maybe Mike Smith can take over team coaching duties and Dirk can go back to being OC. But in either case I hope the team does Winston right and has an actual OC running things.

    Erik

Please go away. Can we just please enjoy the moment.

  15. LongSeason Says:

“The gunslinger in Jameis took over.” Exactly. I can take the turnovers if Jameis plays like that and we win. Stop trying to coach the wild stallion out of our franchise QB. You do that and we will win more games like this. Trust Jameis, Dirk.

  16. Bob in Valrico Says:

The gunslinger also threw a pic intended for Evans with 4 defenders around him.
The stallion still vneeds some taming .Glad we won won. But the truth be told
Jameis could easily had 5 pics in this game.

  17. Bkgrime Says:

This was the best game I have watched in the last decade

  18. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Godwin out there looking like Chris Carter making contorted and contested catches. This guy is at minimum solid AS A ROOKIE. Like Jameis said maybe not great at one thing but good at everything, a jack of all trades.
We have a great 1,2 punch and I’m sorry but Hump is one of the most slippery dudes out there. He is always breaking at least one tackle per play. I say if Desean Jackson has any trade value you pull it off.

  19. satchseven Says:

Exactly. I can take the turnovers if Jameis plays like that and we win. Stop trying to coach the wild stallion out of our franchise QB.

no the dumb pick forcing passes to a triple covered mike evans is dumb stuff

  20. nole4JabooANDdBucs Says:

James is not the only top QB who throws Interceptions! My goodness… the opposing team and especially in this case New Orleans have guys who play the ball, just like our defense strip and take the ball.

IT IS A TEAM SPORT…and when a team play you can overcome bad plays, like drops, missed extra points and interceptions.

Coaches coach, players play and fans or critics watch!
THE BUCS WON AGAINST AN EXTREMELY TALENTED TEAM!!! GO BUCS👏☠

  21. webster Says:

All you people loved farve and he threw into triple coverage his whole career. Gtfoh

  22. stvcl Says:

Coach stated he just wanted to get in position for a field goal. Jameis wanted the win. With his vanilla play calling all year playing not to lose I’m happy Jameis saw what was open and overruled Coach K and went for the win. Another looooong off season for us but hopefully we’ll address the glaring needs on defense this year. BTW Grimes is still the best CB we have on the roster. Hope he’ll come back another year. Go Bucs!
