It Is The Business They’ve Chosen

December 29th, 2017

“I didn’t ask who gave the order because it had nothing to do with business.”

Joe mentioned yesterday that Bucs offensive coordinator coach Todd Monken channeled Bobby Knight with a fantastic comeback about distractions.

Well, Monken also reached into Hollywood for an analogy to describe the state Bucs coach Dirk Koetter’s staff is in.

No one, not even Koetter, knows if they will be employed when the sun sets on the first day of the new year come Monday. The Bucs are 4-11 and very easily could be 4-12 considering their foe Sunday (New Orleans).

When a team finishes with four wins, nobody is safe, save for a handful of players.

Monken mentioned how the uncertainty doesn’t really bother him, but it does bother his family. In short, Monken reached back into a masterpiece of artwork, “Godfather II” and sort of sounded like Hyman Roth talking about when Moe Greene was whacked.

“I think it is harder on your families because they are the ones that have to move,” Monken said. “It is what we choose to do. There [have] been plenty of times throughout any career as a coach where it doesn’t matter what the circumstances are – we are paid to win. That is the nature of what we do. When you don’t, it’s tough. It’s not about the job. It’s not about job security. It’s about everything you put into it. I’m going to still coach. That’s the greatest thing about coaching – these players, they’ve got a small window to make money – I am getting better as a coach. My body is not, I can’t play, but you can still coach.

“That part of it doesn’t bother me. The thing that bothers you is when you put everything into it and then it doesn’t show up on film the way you want it to look and the way you feel like you are coaching it and teaching it. The reality is, once we come into the building, I don’t think of it at all. I think about what we’ve got to do this week to continue to get our guys to play. …

“We are all paid to perform in one way, shape or form. When that doesn’t happen then that is part of the business. That is what you have to deal with.”

Joe would hope that if there happens to be a coaching change, the new guy sees fit to keep Monken. He has done a good job with wide receivers.

But yeah, as Koetter confessed this week, the limbo the coaches are in has been a distraction despite the noble talk to the contrary.

As for Hyman Roth, here’s that famous scene from “Godfather II.” For fans of “The Godfather” and mob movies, there is so much to work with here.

I can empathize to a degree. I have coached for over 20 years. Undefeated state champions and winless teams. Sometimes your best is not good enough in man’s eyes. God has a plan that is good for everyone and getting to a place where there is nothing in your power you can do can be a good thing. (Even though it doesn’t feel good).
