“Let’s See What Happens”

Two Bucs games left?

Sometimes, teams lock up their best players for the following year before the current season ends.

It fosters harmony, keeps fans from doubling up on blood pressure medication and it often leads to a more team-friendly contract.

That’s not the case with 34-year-old Brent Grimes.

Your Buccaneers’ best cornerback told Joe last night he hasn’t thought at all about playing next year. So it’s safe to assume nobody in the Bucs front office has put a contract in front of him.

Joe pressed Grimes on the subject and asked whether he assumes and expects to play next year like a younger player would, or whether he’s in see-how-I-feel mode.

Grimes seemed most focused on the business side of things.

“I feel good. I feel really good. It’s just, you know, we’re going to see. I’ll be a free agent after this,” Grimes said. “I don’t know what’s going to happen. Let’s see what happens.”

The Bucs, in Joe’s not-so-humble opinion, are in no position to let talented defensive players walk out of the building.

And have you seen what else the Bucs have at cornerback? Veteran Robert McClain has had a solid season in his versatile role, but nobody at the position is near Grimes’ league.

Before the game on the Buccaneers Radio Network, general manager Jason Licht was talking about what an athletic marvel Grimes is.

If the Bucs can’t craft an offer Grimes will accept, then they will forced to pay dearly in free agency to land a No. 1 cornerback, unless they’re crazy enough to bank on a rookie corner in the first round. That didn’t work out well last time.

“I feel good. I feel really good. It’s just, you know, we’re going to see. I’ll be a free agent after this,”

Sounds to me like he’s already made up his mind and doesn’t plan on coming back.

  2. Zach Says:

Miko has said many times that he won’t be back next year with the team.

  3. C eh N eh D eh Says:

if Fuller on Chicago makes it to free agency, break the bank for him!

I was really proud of that defense last night. They got it handed to them but they got back up after every knock down. I think with a revamped D line and complete focus on the defensive side of the ball next year this is a playoff team. Grimes was great a lot of the time, but it’s time to move on. Justin Evans is going to be a stud!

Tampa is not a desirable destination for players or coaches. Its a completely dysfunctional organization that has had 4 good seasons in 42… players want to win… no state taxes and good weather is a selling point for retirees not talented football players…

It was nice to see the defense play with heart. Cancer93 must go

  6. LUVMYBUCS Says:

I respect what Grimes has done as a BUC.

You’re asking the wrong person. Miko wears the pants in the family. If she says no to playing in Tampa next year, then it’s a no!

  8. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Outside of a few quality defensive lineman.
Malcome Butler & Tre Boston should be key targets in Free Agency.

  9. Bucsfan951 Says:

tmax: yeah because the defense didn’t play with any heart during the pats game. You’re so lame, dude. Now go ahead and talk about me being a nut hugger of gmc and fan boy… you’re so predictable. I feel bad for your ex wife and kids!

  10. LUVMYBUCS Says:

*Malcolm Butler & Tre Boston should be key targets in Free Agency.

  11. Debilah Says:

Bucsfan951 you obviously don’t know my family, only what you read, Brent makes all decisions on his FB career, and I should know I’ve been with him 34 yrs.

    951

The results prove gmc is a quitter and cancer that is fact sir… try again… little man you are wrong again no exwife nor kids… raise your sstandards…supporting a career loser who has never won a single meaningful game in his entire 8 year career is laughable

  13. AlteredEgo Says:

The reality is …time to move on…I love his game but ….time to move on

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ 951

Correction…….it’s Tmax’s ex significant other….GMC & Tmax was the femme.

^^^Players play for winning so cute you think this. It’s the money Tmax nothing else matters to 99% of the players.

  16. Lord Cornelius Says:

I’d like to see the overall pressure stats from the game / hits on Ryan vs games with McCoy; because to my eye our pass rush was actually better without him.

I’d move him for a 3rd rounder. That’s how bad I want him out of the locker room for the sake of a culture change. It may not be fair but I think it’s just necessary.

  17. BigMacAttack Says:

They’d be fools to let Grimes walk, which is 100% what they are, a ship of fools. I know this much, I won’t be back as a season ticket holder. If they announce Gruden as the next head coach, that could change. I’ve had enough of Koetter and his ineptitude.

  18. DoNUTS Says:

Agreed MONEY is the sole motivator in today’s NFL. All that other stuff has little to do with anything. Hence, Campbell was the BEST D player in FA in the past 5 years and to not make an offer that at least was presented by the media is shameful. As a fan, it made me question the Glazer’s passion for the team and wins especially when you watch the money spent on Man U. We are like a step child in their mind.

    tmax-
I would have never guessed you have no wife or love in your life. It certainly does not reflect in your posts as an angry delusional fan. 😉

  19. BigMacAttack Says:

Btw Hargreaves has been screwed up by his Coaches. Most Cornerbacks come here good and within a season or two turn to garbage. That’s a coaching problem. The Bucs also have a lard problem with linemen. They feed them too much and work them out too little. If the Bucs played Cleveland right now, they’d lose. Officially the worst team in the NFL is right here.

  20. BucEmUp Says:

If Mike Smith is still here Grimes wont sign back….Smith needs to go promote Hayes to dc draft all defense and get a good center to move marpet back to guard.

    ^^BINGO^^

    and so have others!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  22. 813bucboi Says:

    @REALIST

    DONT HIDE!!!!!!

DIRK NOT CALLING A T.O. WHEN WE HAD 10PLAYERS ON DEFENSE HAS PUT THE FINAL NAIL IN HIS COFFIN!!!!!….THAT WAS ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF HIS INCOMPETENCE!!!!!!…..STILL MAKING COACHING 101 MISTAKES!!!!!GO BUCS!!!!

  23. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Brent Grimes 20 ints over the past five years are tied with Richard Sherman for tops in the league.

I’m not saying Grimes deserves Sherman money just trying to bring a little perspective. Sherman makes FOUR times annually what Grimes earns. How about we say Grimes is at least half as good as Sherman and pay him half of what Sherman makes. Pay the man!!!! It’s not a long term gamble!

  24. Bucsfanman Says:

I’m Hokie alum so yes to Kyle Fuller.
Regardless, we have to get a pass-rush first.
Some “played with heart” tmax. There were way too many missed tackles though. Oh, that and Matt Ryan ordered a steak from Bern’s. I’m told he ordered it well-done and put ketchup on it!

  25. BucFan4Life Says:

Its hard to offer big NFL contracts when you have a conflict of interest, namely Manchester United. The Glazer boys have little interest in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, evidenced by the low payroll.

Malcom would be appalled at what those 2 nitwits have done to the Bucs.

  26. Mike Johnson Says:

Good for MR Grimes. HE’s long in the tooth and knows this is purely a business. I suspect..another team will offer him more and he will scoop it up and run into the endzone. Hell, I would to. No such thing as loyalty anywheres anymore. Money talks.

  27. Pickgrin Says:

SPBF – Sherman made $13.6M this year. Grimes made $8M this year.

Obviously not “FOUR times” Grimes salary.

The $8M per is likely right on target for a guy in Grimes position who is still playing well but is 35 years old coming into next year.

A 2 year offer in that range with the 2018 portion guaranteed is very fair and perhaps even above market value.

Whatever the economics – I do hope Grimes comes back for at least next year.

  28. darin Says:

The new defensive staff is far more important than any corners the bucs might sign or draft. If mike smith somehow stays and keeps playing this lousy defense theres no reason to draft a corner. His soft d is set up for simply by pressuring the qb with 4 linemen. No reason to draft anyone other than d linemen. Then o linemen if its dirk. I hope we get an aggressive d coordinator. Tired of this soft zone mess and just rushing 4. For all you mock drafters theres no way to figure out who is gona be best cuz I doubt these coaches will be here next year. Hope grimes comes back tho he is good playing in any d. Hargreaves could and should be good with better coaching. This team is so poorly coached its beyond ridiculous.

  29. cmurda Says:

Translation: I’ll test the market and if some team (that has playoff potential) flashes serious cash, I might be down. Let me be clear. I would 100% feel the same way as Grimes and approach it the same way. 1 thing I like about Grimes off the field is he says it like it is. Same thing with Miko. As a fan, I most certainly hope Brent gives it another year in Tampa and it stinks that it may not happen. But, as a man I respect the heck out of whatever decision he makes. Brent has always given his all in Tampa and he and Miko get nothing but love from me.

  30. Milenko Says:

    And his loafing. Weak

  31. BucTrooper Says:

Grimes will be a Patriot, Seahawk or Cowboy next year.

  32. QBKilla Says:

Agree Joe, CB has to be a high priority this off season and Grimes is clearly the best we have.
