Zero Need To Play Jameis

November 29th, 2017

Should be shelved.

Joe knows this won’t go over very well in the halls of One Buc Palace, but it’s the brutal truth.

There is zero need any longer to rush America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, back into the starting lineup.

The Dixie Chicks last Sunday essentially ended the season for the Bucs. Though mathematically still eligible for the playoffs, common sense and reality tells anyone that the season is toast.

With the news this morning that arguably the two best offensive linemen for the Bucs are done for the season, putting Jameis back in the starting lineup with nothing to play for is borderline irresponsible. It’s all about the draft now. And saving both the franchise and The Franchise.

Jameis is damaged goods. His wing, which the future of the Bucs rests on, may or may not be ready to go. Of course, winning Bucs coach Dirk Koetter will say if Jameis is medically cleared to play, he will. This is a lawyer’s dodge. Bucs AC/DC-loving Jason Licht and Koetter should do the right thing: put Jameis on the injured reserve list.

Of course, Jameis won’t like this. Just like Joe doesn’t like going to the dentist every six months.

Joe can understand how Koetter would be inclined to play Jameis because, with a 4-7 mark, the lure of empty wins may cloud judgement in order to potentially save jobs. Well, the best way for folks to lose their jobs is for an already damaged Jameis to get blasted behind a makeshift offensive line for no good reason.

Team Glazer should issue a statement of confidence backing Koetter so that he won’t be tempted to use Jameis. And then Jameis should be shut down.

  1. Buc believer Says:

Team Glazer needs to announce that Jason and Mike Smith are fired effective immediately and that Dirk has one more year to prove himself or he will be canned as well. Then and only then will faith be restored. IMHO

  2. Mike Johnson Says:

Mark my words..Jameis comes back and plays. Jameis has a good game or two..in losses. Then Jameis goes down..completely down. Requiring even more surgery than before. Its the..Buc way!!! How dumb is Koetter? Defenses will concentrate exclusively on Jameis’s shoulder. And now we got 2 Off linemen on IR? Even ole Ray Charles can see this ending!!!!!!!!

  3. Lamarcus Says:

    Joe

I get that logic but it’s football and if jw can play let him. We all fans would love to see him play. I do. This is a boring team without him in there. I live the eating ws antics and that no bullying mentality.

  4. JMarkBuc Says:

    Joe

You are half right..JW should be shut down. No backing DK though!!

No trade value if he isn’t healed up.

  5. ndog Says:

The second that it came out that Marpet and Dot were done for the season then they should have done the same thing with Jameis as he should not see the field again this year. There is 0 to gain as if he plays great and we win games (still not probable with our defense and no running game) we lose draft status and he could possibly damage his shoulder even more and we are playing teams that need to win so it is not like they are going through the motions. This is not a tough call rest him the rest of this season as he is already hurt and we will not be able to protect him.

  6. DBS Says:

If he is healthy he should play. The excuses already ended. Year 3. Don’t try to make them up for him now. That or all teams with line problems and or a losing record should pull their starting QB for the rest of the season.

  7. Bob in Valrico Says:

Look ,if Jameis healthy and he has to decide that. I think he should play.
It is unlikely Jameis will improve enough if he doesn’t play and a suspension is
handed out.Don’t want that to happen but, losing 11 games of developement
would not be a good thing.

  8. 813bucboi Says:

this season is over….this staff will not be retained….sit Winston….simple as that!!!….GO BUCS!!!

  9. godzilla13 Says:

I agree with Joe. Put him on IR. Winston suffered an AC joint sprain in his throwing shoulder, why risk him re-aggravating his shoulder injury again? Shoulder injuries are the worst.

  10. DB55 Says:

NY should make a play from Jaboo and Gruden.

  11. Broy34 Says:

Interesting how the people who were bashing Winston finally realized what they were missing

  12. C eh N eh D eh Says:

Griffin time, tank like the Giants…the NFL is really destroying itself…hate the draft lottery idea but teams are blatantly tanking for the “Franchise QB”…just like Lovie did…I flew in from Canada for that ugly tank job to get Jameis…was disgusted with not trying to win the game..it was obvious..

  13. tnew Says:

No urgency to bring him back at all. If he is 100%, then ok, but if he needs off season surgery on his right shoulder, fire the entire staff, immediately.

Pewter Report, (I have tried to substantiate this with a second source and haven’t seen it yet) is actually stating JW was hurt prior to the ARIZONA game and the staff decided to roll with him anyway. I can’t buy off on this yet as I believe it would be reported on a more widespread basis, but it is out there. If this is true, I have some really serious questions about the coaching staff.

at this point, if there are any questions regarding the shoulder, start Ryan Griffen, see what he has and go from there, going into next season. He was spinning it pretty good in preseason.

  14. Bucsince78 Says:

Even better, just maybe the Bucs will request that he starts serving his 6 game suspension NOW. Heck, even retro back for the games he has missed. E Elliot got 6 games for slapping around his live in g-friend. You got to imagine that Winston will at least get the same (minimal) for groping a stranger. Particularly, with his track record back in his college days. This would also make him better trade bait prior to the draft. Winston for Eli sounds like a good one.

  15. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I think the DOCTORS should make this decision!

There are actually some GREAT reasons to play #3 IF he’s healthy.

He’s regressed this year. Will he ever stop moronic plays like that shovel pass turnover to Doug while he was being sacked? He still forces too many passes into too tight of windows.

We have a $125 MILLION decision coming up next year. I think that verdict is still out. Obviously the Arizona situation will impact that as well but I’m simply talking football now.

I would feel a lot more comfortable if #3 came back and actually managed some games…shows that he has learned from watching Matt Ryan. I’m not sure we are certain who our 2018 QB is…I would sure like to see more of him in 2017 to reaffirm our belief in him.
Jameis has two more years left on his rookie contract. So there is no $125 million decision next year. And he probably could be franchised for $30 million in 2020, if desired. So let’s take a deep breath. –Joe

  16. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    Matt Ryan…lol ..errr..Ryan FitzPatrick

  17. not there yet Says:

I remember someone in this site arguing with me because realistically I said Winston was the 4th best qb in the division. I think dirk realized that and realized how tough this division is. Winston won’t save his job and I think this decision had already been made whether he’ll keep his job they just wait until the end of the season to reveal it. You know what Winston is I say give the other backup some game experience, if he’s equal old man Fitz then at least we can settle on a backup and it’s one less thing to worry about

  18. Mike Johnson Says:

You don’t completely recover from an aggrevated severe shoulder sprain in mid NFl season. This ain’t High school peoples!! Jameis should have been on IR long ago. Just you guys wait..and see..what happens if he plays again this season. And I’m gonna be smilin sayin..I told Y’all so!!!

  19. I Bleed Red Says:

BS Winston needs to play. This is his team. He got them to a 2 – 6 record before departing and if he’s healthy he needs to prove he’s the guy going forward. Having him sit out the season on the bench does not give me faith in his ability to start fresh, and play better next year

  20. Bculaw Says:

@tnew: the Jeff Cameron podcast on this website has been reporting for weeks that Jameis was injured in the 2nd quarter of the Vikings game.

There’s a big difference between “can he play?”and “should he play?” When you are in a playoff hunt, the question is almost always “can he play?” If he can, then he should. The only question for the Bucs right now given this train wreck of a season is “should he play?” With Marpet and Dot out, if he is still dealing with any affects of the injury, the answer to that question should be a resounding “no.” Aside from the concern of reinjuring this same A/C joint- particularly behind a makeshift o-line, you have to be concerned that his current injury could result in altered throwing mechanics that could lead to bad habits or more significant injuries down the line.

He may be 100%. If he is, then let him get the needed experience (hopefully with an altered game plan to focus on shorter/quick release passes behind this o-line). If he has any remaining limitations or pain, then he needs to be on the shelf with Griffin starting.

  21. Bradinator Says:

Shelve him. We are looking at Hawley at Center, Benonoch or Wester at RT. We saw what that looked like last year. Not pretty. No sense in getting JW beat up in a losing cause. If one of those guys goes down, it’s going to be practice squad guys protecting Jameis. I’m not comfortable with the idea.

  22. D-Rome Says:

I disagree. He’s paid to play football. There are many season ticket holders that purchased those tickets to watch Jameis Winston, not Ryan Fitzpatrick. If the team doctor and Dr. James Andrews says he’s healthy then he should play.

  23. pick6 Says:

Just concede the groping case and tell the NFL the team is imposing a suspension proactively. The results of the investigation will determine whether the suspension is with or without pay. Preserve your QB and removes the suspension uncertainty.

  24. Bucsfanman Says:

At first I thought, sit him NOW! But, I kind of have to agree with StPete on this one. Think about it. How would this be different than if Marpet and Dotson went down in week 3 or 4. Yea, I get that he’s coming off of injury but the cream will always rise to the top no matter the circumstances.
We can’t bubble-wrap the kid and protect him from those meanie defensive players his whole career! He’s got a lot to prove still. Can he overcome adversity?
And to h3ll with draft position! I can’t stand that argument. This team should be going onto that field on Sunday to win. No excuses. Have some pride.

  25. ben Says:

Jamis is not gonna scare anyone with his play.. Bucs picked the wrong player-again. Every qb drafted behind him that has played before last year is rated higher and Winston has weapons ,but he is NOT accurate!

  26. Eric Says:

If he can play he should. As Mckay once said you don’t learn from the bench.

This is a great opportunity for him to man up and show his team mates how much he wants to win, as well as the fan base.

He needs to recapture that improvement he was making in his game so everyone can go forward with more confidence next year.

  27. SOEbuc Says:

TEAM SACKS 2017: 4. CAROLINA, 6. NEW ORLEANS, 10. ATLANTA. THREE OF OUR LAST FIVE GAMES INCLUDING SAINTS TWICE. BENCH JAMEIS. AND JUST SO YOU KNOW, 32. BUCS. DEAD LAST.

  28. SOEbuc Says:

*OOPS I THOUGHT WE PLAYED SAINTS TWICE BEFORE THE YEAR WAS OVER.

  29. JMan5 Says:

Extend him then trade him to the browns

  30. passthebuc Says:

    @Jman
Why would the Browns take him. They are not that stupid.

  31. JMan5 Says:

    @passthebuc

    good point

  32. tnew Says:

    thanks BCLaw

  33. passthebuc Says:

    @Joe
    30 million for mediocrity.

What the hell is wrong with this picture?????????????

  34. Joeypoppems Says:

The QB that needs to play is Ryan Griffin. Especially if Winston could be facing a suspension next season. Would be smart to see what he can do before that happens. Unless the plan is to pay Fitzpatrick

  35. Seminole Bill Says:

Whether he groped the Uber driver or not is irrelevant. In today’s atmosphere, a mere allegation is sufficient to prove guilt. Jameis will likely have to sit out the first 6 games of next year. And, we need at least a 3-3 record in those 6 games to make anything out of the 2018 season. What that means is that the Bucs need a starting QB for 2018. Put Jameis on IR and let’s see what the other 2 QB’s can do.

  36. Bob in Valrico Says:

    Ouch 30 million ! That’s a punch in the gut,not a deep breath!Given jameis’s play this year.

  37. martinii Says:

I am not sure Winston is the face of this team. I need to see improvement with the long ball and the maturity to finish out games. I am not willing to wait through another off-season and possibly pay this guy a fortune without seeing more improvement. Play him as much as we can and see if he can still win.

  38. Zwak Says:

Play Griffin the rest of the year!

  39. Locked In Says:

Winston needs to play, as long as he is healthy. He still has a lot of developing to do before he can be an elite QB.

  40. Hodad Says:

The Bucs don’t need to tank. Playing as hard as they can won’t get them anymore wins.

  41. RustyRhinos Says:

I would say there are $100 million-plus reasons to play Mr. Winston “the Messiah” “Americas QB” if he is healthy. Where is all the talk now about how “great QB’s” make their Oline play better, how they make those around them lift their game up on high, part the seas and allow running backs to enter the holes completely untouched? Where are those Wiseman’s words? Oh, we will just toss out the decisions on resigning the “franchise savior QB” to a $100 million-plus due to his enormous future potential, we have yet to ever see in the first quarter of almost all of his Bucs games. We are to simply just take it as a prophecy that Mr. Winston will get more accurate, will correct his uncanny ability to stare down his WR before, during, and after the snap of the football. Hey, I will say that I have had my hopes up that Mr. Winston will correct these blemishes in his skill set, yet next season will be season number 4. How much prophetic outlook should we have if he does not play the last remaining games THIS season, to make the decision next season about if Mr. Winston is the future for our team? Or will we saddle him up, pay him a fortune only to realize we made a bad decision in 2 more seasons. When we are stuck with his SSDD for the length of that contract that is guaranteed.

I want him to start, lead those lost souls on the Oline to the glory land call multiple consecutive Wins. How long has it been since the “Savior & Messiah” had a three-game in a row win streak? I am all for seeing him rise above his naysayers like me.
Missouri born over here you know “The Show Me State” show me, do not talk about it while eating your fingers, or we will get better rah! rah! rah! speeches after another loss and several bad passes and possibly a few INT’s, Pick sixes. Yeah, please show me the only thing that matters, it is not the yards, it is not the TD’s, It is the simple plan of being ahead on the scoreboard at the end of the fourth quarter. That is the only thing that anyone gives two chits about WINS!!
    Go Bucs!

  42. Dirty Bucs Says:

Play Winston. Let him get hurt due to the irresponsibility. Fire the coaches. Go get another QB and some OL and DL in the draft. Bring in some FA to fill out the trenches. Get a new coaching staff and let them work their scheme. Move on.

  43. DB55 Says:

Missouri born over here you know “The Show Me State” show me,
    —————
You should have led with this. He started the season 2-2 should have been 3-1 but we can’t kick field goals maybe Jameis should kick too.

He had a 5 game win streak last year.

He hasn’t even played in 3 consecutive games since week 6.

Man I can’t wait till Jameis leaves this god forsaken town

  44. Bucsfanman Says:

Stop it DB55! There are still a few fanatics around these parts that want to see the Bucs succeed.

  45. DB55 Says:

You could have fooled me. Did you not read these comments? Bunch of ass clowns if you ask me.

  46. JMan5 Says:

    its time to #MoveOn

  47. denjoe Says:

    statement of confidence

Have you seen the poll results?

  48. SOEbuc Says:

    @Seminole Bill

Jameis will likely have to sit out the first six games next year? They better come up with some damn good evidence against him for that to happen. They certainly don’t seem to have/mentioned any strong evidence against him except for that girl’s accusations.

  49. Waterboy Says:

Winston didn’t get carved up by Case Keenum, he didn’t let Adrian Peterson come out and march right up and down the field and put up 21 points on their first 4 drives of the game in Arizona in fact he only played 3 series in that game, he didn’t let Buffalo march 75 yds in about 1 min to take the lead at the end of the game or fumble away a reception while the team was trying to get back into field goal range at the end, he wasn’t on the field the 2nd half of the game in New Orleans. He played like very mediocre at best against Carolina so I’ll put that one on him. I’m not sure if a lot of us are watching the same games if you’re faulting Jameis for all 6 of the losses when he played.

Winston need to brush up on his pass rushing and pass coverage skills to live up to some of the expectations that you all have for him.

  50. nole4JabooANDdBucs Says:

Regardless of the outcome JW need some live play time with his weapons…some like to think Ryan was so phenomenal…Mike Smith seemed totally ecstatic that JW was back and he coaches defense.

JW has played much better given the circumstances…defense lagging, oline not up to par like it was the last few weeks and the lack of a kicker. The locker seemed more upbeat altho you people really believe the guys were excited about Ryan…

    Some just don’t understand comrade.

That’s why you don’t realize given more time with Djax and OJ will result in good things. Look at the Saints as sharp as Drew Brees was it didn’t start clicking til they got a running game and he doesn’t have to carry it alone. Same thing with Dallas no Zeke and Dak isn’t the overrated QB anymore! JW has played well enough for the Bucs during the period with no weapons…Oline, kicker and QB.

And where are the Bucs going to find this amazing, fantastic perfect, fantasy QB…still SMH…

  51. SOEbuc Says:

    @Waterboy

HERE HERE! This defense and it’s schemes smell of rotten catfish cesspool. That’s why Koetter and Smith both need to be tossed. Koetter has no clue how to run a defense which a good HC needs to know how to do and the defense that he gives Mike Smith to run is hot trash.

  52. Howard Cosell Says:

    Agree 100%

  53. Howard Cosell Says:

    …with Joe

  54. Tony from Los Angeles Says:

Joe – this would make sense if Jameis had fully established himself as elite. He has not. He has a lot of on field learning still to do.

  55. Joe Says:

Joe – this would make sense if Jameis had fully established himself as elite. He has not. He has a lot of on field learning still to do.

    Fair point.

  56. C. Alaka Says:

Jameis should DEFINITELY play. How else are you supposed to get better if you don’t play. Jameis has shown he’s a good QB, but there’s still some work that needs to be done for him to be great. Some of that work doesn’t happen on the bench. If he’s healthy then you play him & if he isn’t then he don’t play [Lovie Smith voice] simple as that lol
