Ugliest Defense

November 26th, 2017

Defenses getting worked over regularly.

This is enough to make you throw your beer at the backyard fence.

Yes, today Mike Smith’s defense coughed up 516 yards facing the Dixie Chicks. How bad, well, let Joe count the ways.

That was the most yards given up by the Bucs this season and only once has Smith’s defense been gouged worse, and that was when they let up 626 yards of offense in the vomit-session known as the overtime loss to the Raiders last year at home.

The 516 yards offense by the Dixie Chicks was the most they have laid on the Bucs in the post-Chucky era.

Further, only four times this season through 11 games have the Bucs not given up at least 400 yards of offense.

Not only can the Bucs not play defense on the road, how can anyone defend this non-production?

    Something has to change.

It’s safe to say the Glaziers will be paying at least one more coach to sit on the couch next year.

The worst part about it all is the fact that almost every game, the Bucs defense is involved in setting another record for the opposing team’s offense.

It’s beyond absurd and it must be stopped.

They have enough talent to not look this bad over and over again.

This defense has more holes than a donut shop! The zone scheme SUCK!!!

  3. HarlemBuc Says:

Yeah… Mike Smith nice guy buuuuuutttt I think the dude needs to accept that he’s gonna have to be one of the main scapegoats and keys to this SH-T Sundae of a season
Checking out… I’ll catch y’all a couple weeks before the draft… thanks Aguayo, Gmac, ME13, VH3, Coach Koetter, Licht and most of all “in”Famous Jameis WinsNONE for another season of unmet potential… speak softly cuz they ain’t bring no daggone sticks

  4. FortMyersDave Says:

This just in: speaking of D. Schiano to the Vols. Just for speculation purposes, how could a Schiano run D have worked out with this talent, it could not have been much worse. Kind of hard to imagine Schiano trying to sell Vol ball in living rooms in the South probably will work out like DiNardo at LSU or Franchione at Bama…….

  5. Season Is Over Says:

Remember in the preseason when they couldn’t stop the run or the pass? From first to last string teams were going up and down the field at will? No one saw this coming.

  6. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Man just wanted to confirm Fort Myers Dave’s report of Schiano to Tennessee.

Wow..poor Schiano…the Vol fans are in full blown revolution. They’re all screaming is Schiano the best we can do?

Actually I think they could do a lot worse…remember Lane Kiffin. Given how well Schiano did with a non football school like Rutgers he should be fine in an actual football factory like Knoxville.

I always thought Schiano’s biggest problem was treating grown men in the NFL like college kids. Coaching college comes much more naturally to him and now he has that post graduate degree at Ohio State where they certainly know how to recruit.

When Jameis Winston was playing, the ugly play of the defense would be blame on Jameis Winston.

Nice to see your girl lay down this week after her beastly performance against a crap miami team with thier 5th quarterback playing…. when it matters or its a quality team ms mccoy is nowhere to be found…

  9. Eric Says:

Dirk has run the bucs offense for three years.

Its getting worse. As is the team with the best talent in years.

Just don’t see it ending well at all.

Gerald McCoy did not lye down. He was pounding the middle of Atlanta’s Offensive Line. This loss is on players being out of position due to what appeared to be bad play calling and Ryan Smith efforts to cover Julio Jones. Also, Fitzpatrick was very inaccurate. I absolutely refuse to consider how awful the offensive line played that led to Fitzpatrick’s ineffective quaterbacking.

  11. tmaxcon Says:

    loggedontosay

He had zero impact you must have been watching another game

  12. Roy T. Buford Says:

Play the Bucs to get well. Julio Jones got three games worth pass yards. I quite watching when he had two TDs. He probably had more. I’m afraid to look.

This team sucks. Badly. All around.

    loggedontosay

The defense thst cancer93 captained gave up over 500 yards and never competed or looked they belonged on field… bucs never had a chance today nor was atl in jeopardy of losing today…

  14. Issic Haggins Says:

How can a Professional Coach not Scheme for Jones if Smith is employed come Monday the Glazers need to fire Licht and Koetter immediately!!!

People this doesn’t happen by chance you have to flat out be an ignorant moron to not scheme for the opponents best player. This is purely a case of Koetter having way way way to much trust for Smith and if that’s the case either Licht must step in or the Glazers yard sale all three. Truly incompetent!!!

  15. TDTB Says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if Smith is retained. 1) who would want DC gig since Koetter appears to be a dead man walking; and 2) if they fire Dirk next year it would mean three DC’s in three years with their own schemes since new HC will want his own guy. I think Koetter and Smith are a package. They both stay or they both go.

Another year, another failure. I guess this is the Football Gods’ punishment for us getting our hopes up that we could finally wipe the stain of losers off of us…

The absolute sheer Unequivocal HORROR..of being a Bucs fan. Reminds me of..Apopcalypse now!!

  22. Bucs14 Says:

Plain and simple, the defense simply gave up today. That last drive by Atlanta showed a defense that had nothing left and no heart. Atlanta simply pounded the ball on the ground.

I don’t think Gruden is the answer. Remember he won his championship with Dungy’s defense. And, after that year the team never did was well. he went 12-4 in 2002, then had 3 losing seasons out of the next six years. not a great coach if you ask me. Heck, he only had 2 winning seasons out of the 4 he was in Oakland.
    Chuckie is not the answer.

  23. Lamarcus Says:

I hope msmith gets the dm treatment for not producing

I knew the blow out was coming when that article came out about gmc ate too much. The excuse was laid early on as a disclaimer

  24. Destinjohnny Says:

    We don’t draft pass rushers
We let Bennett and Adrian go and we didn’t draft luke
What can dirk do? We don’t have talent.

  25. Eric Says:

    bucfan999

I like your suggestions. How about Jeff Garcia QB coach and Brooks as GM.

    Voila.

  26. tmaxcon Says:

    Bucs14

the only thing mckay and dungy the clown built was one of the most embarrassing offenses in league history… mr whyce handed dungy his defense. you can’t rewrite history because you have low standards in coaches.

The legend of dungy far surpasses his actual accomplishments.

Tom Flores got screwed and hall of fame is a joke with dungy in it.

  27. tmaxcon Says:

living in the past never works and is strictly for losers who can’t handle the future and rather hide in a failed past…

  28. tmaxcon Says:

you people need to let the failed past go… only 1 Superbowl with that defense is failure not glory years… and now you want to bring these underachieving has beens back to a franchise that needs to move forward not backwards. the bucs need to rid the organization of the losing culture not bring back past failures and bag of fertilizer help it thrieve

  29. Eric Says:

Gruden took over an aging team and the Glazer’s sold out for a last run at the title with that group, giving up two number ones and two number two draft choices. (on a team that had already given up a number one and two for K. Johnson).

Gruden delivered. But no pool of young talent remained and very few picks to rebuild.

Even at that considerable disadvantage still won two more division titles and three more winning seasons. (with Sims and Garcia quarterbacking).

He got great years out of Galloway and then Bryant. I can only imagine what he could do with Evans plus Jackson.

What exactly have we got to lose?

  30. firethecannons Says:

Nobody is defending it–we want someone like yourself JOE to ask Mike Smith or Koetter specifically how they can justify keeping their job next season considering the performance of the defense. We want to know what their answer to that question is. We need an outsider to give an honest evaluation of the play calling and the players. Then corresponding cuts should be made.

  31. tmaxcon Says:

    Eric

Let me ask you this then…. What do we have to lose by trying something new and exciting versus going back to failed philosophies of the past.

this is not a defensive team or town it’s a losing team period. 4 good years and 1 great year in 41 is laughable. going back to a miserable past makes no sense.

Old is never better… The past is the past respect it but never try and relive it.

  32. firethecannons Says:

Yes to Eric–nothing to lose–we are last in the division for the year–time for a regime change or at least a new defensive play caller and new offensive play caller, Glazers need to unlock the bank and Licht needs to make some defensive purchases in free agency.

  33. tmaxcon Says:

    firethecannons

it does not matter. every year we all get excited about the free agents and their past resumes filled with success then they meet cancer93 and get the will to compete and desire to win sucked out of them immediately.

  34. D-Rome Says:

Worse than Lovie. Simple as that. At least under Lovie the team was rebuilding. No excuse here.

  35. tmaxcon Says:

    D-Rome
no rewriting history sir… bad character lovie said multiple teams team was not in rebuilding mold.

  36. tmaxcon Says:

multiple times that the team was not rebuilding.

  37. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Schiano will NOT be hired at Tennessee, because of extreme fan backlash.
Schiano is reported to have known about Jerry Sandusky and his perversions, when him and Sandusky were both assistants at Penn State, under Joe Paterno.

  38. mark2001 Says:

Guys…get over Lovie. Have you seen U of I football? It is about as bad as you can imagine.

  39. cmurda Says:

Wow. Tennessee agreed to have Schiano be their head coach and have rescinded it because people were complaining about it because of his “ties” to Penn State scandal. That’s awful. I feel for Schiano. Dude has never been given a fair shake since leaving Rutgers and he’s a good coach.

  40. uckinator Says:

WE are one player away on defense ! Need to draft a smoking hard ass*d PASS rusher. TRADE up to get him. Makes the defense better !

  41. JimmyJack Says:

    Just to rock the boat…………..

Lovies team had a better offense then this filth Dirk has muddled out in the last two seasons.

  42. tmaxcon Says:

    cmurda

the PC police win again… from the best of my knowledge Schiano was not involved with anything bad nor did he hide anything from authorities. so now the mentally weak PC police get to destroy careers because you were associated with something or someone but committed no crimes. absolutely pathetic…

  43. tmaxcon Says:

    JimmyJack

but lovies defense was so bad we could not tell

  44. EA Says:

Tmax, what is your take on the current coaching staff ? Do you have anyone in mind that you’d think would be a good hire if this group doesn’t make it into next season ?
You keep saying stop living in the past but all the successful coaches in the league have been around for a while, I’d much rather take the chances with Gruden or Harbaugh than any other unproven coordinator youngster out there.

  45. MadMax Says:

Just look to the draft…..Arden Key hopefully!

  46. mike10 Says:

How bad has their 3rd down defense been!?

How many more times are we going to watch them rush 4 on 3rd down and get burned? Crazy to me.

  47. tmaxcon Says:

    EA

fair question… bucs stand zero chance in recruiting harbaguh he is not going to consider this mickey mouse franchise. he has a choice of anywhere he wants but all that is irrelevant because he is not leaving Michigan.

I am not really sure who I want yet. I was kind of hoping they would turn it around but clearly they will not. I want an offensive minded coach defensive teams win one and done where as offensive teams win multiple championships so I want an high powered offense. I hate conservative coaches who coach scared like dungy, lovie and that entire coaching shrub. It’s a fair question but I do not have a favorite as of yet. i am going to wait and see what shakes out before i pick a favorite. I am no licht guy anymore too many gambles on proven failures see doug martin.

  48. Red86 Says:

It’s not coaching that’s going to fix this. The defense sucked during the Josh Freeman era to now. It’s the players fault with the loser mentality. We need to clean out the defense with trades and cuts. And bring in newer guys. Zone defense isn’t obsolete the best teams uses zone and man to man. What make the zone work is talent and hunger to out work everyone. What I see, we suck with man to man and zone. Blitzing often get blocked, which lead to bigger gains.

  49. Duke Says:

    Stpetebucfan,

Schiano to the Vols is a no go!

  50. jj Says:

Issic Haggins you are absolutely correct sir. Mike Smith did not gameplay for Julio Jones. If he did, he should be fired immediately for incompetence because it was the wrong defense from the start. If he didn’t, then he should be fired immediately for not game planning for the leagues most dangerous receiver. All without having to worry about Devonta Freeman who was ruled out early in the week. Every team has figured out that when we play 15 yards off the receivers you audible to the slant or quick turnaround. Every team except Mike Smith somehow doesn’t recognize it. It is mind boggling, almost like an F U to the Bucs Nation. Its like the waiter at a restaurant that is quitting that day or know he is getting fired so he rubs his taint on everyones food.

  51. Owlykat Says:

It all starts up front but genius Licht never learned that. If he had gotten Campbell and a great pass rusher this year and used high draft picks for great Offensive Linemen the last two years, we would have been able to run on the Falcons and had a balanced offense which is essential when you run our play action Offense. With a strong DL and pass rush we could have thrown off the Falcon’s timing and we could have also stymied the run. Licht is the main culprit that has to go.
That said our DC was asleep at the switch in the first half running a vanilla defense like he did in preseason. You saw the difference in the second half when he finally got creative and Dirk finally started using his DEs. We almost caught up and could have won if we had played the first half like we did the second half today. Dump Licht and get a great GM who can improve both our lines and our present coaches can get us to the playoffs. The OL Coach needs to go too, however. We were one win away last year but the other GMs in our conference outclassed Licht this last draft and I knew that and said so when it happened. Now you can see the result I saw ahead then.

  52. BucEmUp Says:

Where are all the fans celebrating his extension? Hes an awesome DC remember?
Smith needs to be fired today

  53. Marlow Says:

No compliment to GMC like Sapp had with Booger. No rush end on the roster. 30-ish and undersized corner accompanied by a 2nd year corner and sub par safeties… and its Mike Smith’s fault we suck on defense c’mon man!

  54. I'm a Tandyman Bucs Fan Says:

Play Tandy and they will win like they did last year. Secondary is getting lit up like the Grisewalds Christmas Lights. Julio wouldn’t do what he did yesterday if Tandy was back there orchestrating the Secondary. He plays on kickoffs only and has 1 tackle and one assist. Ward and Conte play the entire game and have 3 and 1 respectively. Come on Man!!! Need to try my solution Mr. Smith!!! This losing SHAT is getting old!!!!!!

  55. pick6 Says:

lately, when the falcons beat the bucs, they BEAT the bucs…we have won our share vs them in recent years, but it seems like every loss to the falcons over the last 4 years or so has been a beatdown from minute 1
