The Pile-On Continues

November 8th, 2017

Unloads on Jameis.

The War on Jameis has reached boiling proportions the last two days, especially in the wake of America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, sparking a sideline hassle that ended up with wide receiver Mike Evans suspended for Sunday’s Josh McCown/ASJackwagon Homecoming Game at the Den of Depression.

Yesterday, gasoline was thrown on the fire by none other than the notorious Screamin’ Stephen A. Smith of BSPN. He torched Jameis so bad, SAS said he’d rather have a one-legged quarterback than Jameis.

Speaking on “First Take,” SAS wasn’t concerned about Jameis’ hassle with Marshon Lattimore. No, SAS is outraged with the poor play from Jameis.

“Oh, it’s a big problem. And I think it’s time we all recognize it,” SAS said. “I mean, you know, Louis Riddick can go to the behavioral issues and what have you. I am not going to go there with Jameis Winston. What I am going to do with Jameis Winston is to look in the mirror and look at his resume.

“You are 17-23 as a starter — 17-23! You play in the NFC South, the same division as Matt Ryan, Cam Newton and Drew Brees. You have to play better. And oh, by the way, if we are talking about young quarterbacks, this day and age, is Jameis Winston’s name really coming up other than the fact he was a Heisman winner with expectations?

“He has had respectable seasons but the Bucs haven’t won. I mean, when you look at it from that perspective, he is 17-23 as a starter. DeShaun Watson or Jameis Winston, who would you roll with right now? I would roll with DeShaun Watson, and he has an ACL injury! And I’d still roll with him because I haven’t been seeing enough from Jameis Winston. You have DeSean Jackson this offseason. You still have Mike Evans. Doug Martin came back. You drafted O.J. Howard. Offense was supposed to be booming. That ain’t been the case!

“I am more concerned with his absence of production [than his sideline hassle] from that quarterback spot.”

SAS may have gotten carried away later when he said he would take Tyrod Taylor over Jameis.

Joe is still in Jameis’ corner. The kid shows too much to be totally and thoroughly rash and throw him into the Gulf. But Jameis has regressed, Joe believes. The past couple of games, doubt about Jameis’ future crept into Joe’s head for the very first time.

(Again, the only thing keeping Joe from breaking out into a cold sweat is the knowledge that Jameis is hurt.)

While Jameis has shown flashes of greatness, with each start one has no idea if Good Jameis or Bad Jameis will show up. You can’t make a playoff run like that (not that any is expected right now).

The slow starts are epidemic. How much of that is on Jameis and how much of that is on Koetter, Joe isn’t really sure, but when Koetter ran a hurry-up offense against Buffalo, Jameis did much better.

It is frustrating when so many young quarterbacks like Carson Wentz, Jared Goff and Watson (before he was hurt) are leading their teams on what look like magical playoff runs and the Bucs are gunning for a top-five pick in the draft.

Joe remembers when Koetter was promoted to head coach he hired Todd Monken to specifically fix Mike Evans, and he did. If Koetter survives and is brought back next year, he may want to think of hiring someone to help fix Jameis. Koetter’s career is directly tied to Jameis for better and for worse.

At 2-6, there is no way one can say Jameis, a former No. 1 overall pick, is making anyone around him on offense better.

Cam Newton has 2 winning seasons in his career. Let’s settle down people.

  2. C eh N eh D eh Says:

Top 5 pick = new QB…I tried to back JameMISS but I’ve seen enough of this story before, a Bucs QB hype failure….He doesn’t have “it” and this team can’t continue to make excuses for him. Do or die the next time he hits the field. Time to show something or move on, quickly….

  3. Tampa Bay Tailgater Says:

Who is comparing Jameis to Cam? No one. What about JGOFF or CWENTZ?

It’s the culture of this organization that has caused his record. That’s why you see first round picks that go to the browns fail so often as well.

The players are a product of their environment.

It”s time, once and for all, the Glazers address it this off season.

  5. Hizzie Says:

I love Winston. I’ll root for as long as he’s on this team. As much as it pains me to agree. SAS is not wrong. To date Winston has yet to put in that on field performance start to finish of a game. That makes you step back and say this kids finally got it. He can takes us where we wanna go. He’s getting outplayed by younger QBs with less offensive firepower at their disposal.

  6. Tom Edrington Says:

Stephen A. Smith: So bad he almost makes you think about becoming a racist…..he’s that awful….best solution is to NEVER watch or listen to this guy and that’s my formula….

Let’em Heal Up for a couple wks.

    Especially Cleveland. Why?

Cleveland currently has *5 Premuim Picks (Rds 1-2)
    Two 1st Round Picks
    Three 2nd Round Picks

  8. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Cleveland could keep the Number One overall pick
And we could still walk away with….

  9. Not there yet Says:

I’m not really seeing where sas was wrong because he hasn’t loved up to the hype. These fans are finally outraged by the losing and overlooked his play because of garbage time 4th quarter stats. I still think he can be the franchise but not if he can’t read the field like it seems, not if he can’t hit the long ball like it seems. The two boxes we can’t check on Winston are reading through progressions and accuracy lol that’s a big deal.

Your calling this a pile on but it’s not. The speech he have at the school that was an overreaction and a pile on, he deserves what he’s getting right now because he still acting like he’s a college quarterback.

Things go so wrong when successful guys act like they’ve arrived when they get to the NFL instead of recognizing the journey is just beginning

  10. Kgh4life Says:

If the Bucs go the QB

  11. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Sign
    –Kirk Cousin

    Draft
    –Luke Faulk

    Trade (Lower Round Comensation)
    –Nate Sudfeld

  12. Kgh4life Says:

If the Bucs go the QB route in the draft next year then your starting from square one: learning a new offense, getting acclimated to NFL game speed and defensive schemes and if the new QB throws 3ints in his first game these same people will say he’s a bust. Drafting a new QB will not guarantee winning in the future. Jameis hasn’t played well of late but how can people give up on him after three years?

  13. Saskbucs Says:

People calling for a QB with the Bucs first pick already…. are out of their minds! Jameis has been very disappointing and it is hard not to say he has regressed but other things have to change before making one at QB.

Coaches are done. This season has been unacceptable and don’t tell me that changing coaches and scheme will put the franchise back years again… looking for a new QB would do that. Picks gotta go to the trenches and unfortunately a dynamic back.

  14. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

He was literally a top 10 QB in every major statistical category until all of 2 weeks ago.

He clearly should not have been playing after re-aggravating/ worsening his shoulder during the Bills game.

  15. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Stephen A Smith is a buffoon and is a big reason that MESPN is failing

  16. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

And as one of the smartest poster on here has mentioned multiple times, Wins are an organizational achievement.

Just think about it, if we have a FG kicker during the Pats game, and the Defense/ Hump don’t give up a 4th Qtr lead and fumble away the game, we are 4-4 right now.

But as it stands, Getting a top 3-5 pick in a QB heavy class, when we ALREADY HAVE A QB, well that gives us a chance to come away with a Kings ransom if a team wants to trade up.

This is just one of those Tank/Reload years, like what the Cowboys went through to get Zeke Elliot.

  17. Supersam Says:

The icing on the whole crap cake season is gonna be watching Josh Mccown throw 3 tds to ASJ Sunday, I hope they zoom in on Lichts reactions. Winston should be auditioning for the new finger lickin good commercials from KFC. We need someone like Tom Coughlin in here coaching immediately, look what he’s done in Jacksonville in 6 months.

  18. Armand Says:

    Jameis Winston career stats in 40 games 10,000+ yards – 60 Td’s 39 int’s

  19. BucThis Says:

  20. DB55 Says:

    Didn’t bother reading I’m sure it’s full of douche-ish-ness

  21. Kgh4life Says:

    @Supersam

A guy like Coughlin is definitely needed to instill some toughness and discipline in this team, another name i think of is Jim Harbaugh, look at what he did for Alex Smith and Kapernick, just not sure what his contractual situation at Michigan is.

  22. Supersam Says:

I would love to have Harbaugh

  23. BrianBucs Says:

As I said before, Jameis will be an NFL head coach killer, getting several fired while not living up to his potential.
Plus, now we can all see that stats are for losers

  24. DB55 Says:

We’re talking about the 3-5 Houston Texans right? Desean Watson? The guy how’s on IR after 6 nfl games? Hmmm okaaaaaay

  25. Lamarcus Says:

    I thot SAS was fired.

  26. Clw JB Says:

He is 23 and really should be a rookie this year – he lacks emotional maturity still- if he doesn’t show dramatic improvement by next year then we should start wondering aloud and not extend him -‘to me the kid needs another year of growing up before we can cast a true judgement

He should have stayed at FSU at least one more year…

  27. doolnutts Says:

I am still a huge supporter of Winston myself but I have pointed this stuff out. The defense has been a HUGE let down this season I really expected big things. But as far as Winston goes his consistency in his throwing and game by game is awful. Our defense holds Cam Newton to 17 points in a must win game and Winston barely gets over 100 yards passing middle of the 3rd quarter. These things CANT happen and to SAS point we have Brees, Ryan, Newton in this division. It is either Winston is up to this challenge or he is not and we need to look else were. We drafted him to compete with our neighbors and so far he is the 4rth best qb in the division…..

Ha!! Father Dungy was right, he was right all along….

  30. rashad Says:

SAS is a coon. I will support Winston as long as he is on this team. But how much of 17-23 is really his fault. Lovie’s d, fg kicker kotter’s play calling is tied into that 17-23. I feel that dirk should give up play calling to work with jamies a little more or run the ship like rams hc, and only work with offense.

  31. DB55 Says:

Yo find me a better completition percentage and a worse defense and then we can talk. Until then you people ought to be ashamed of yourselves.

  32. NCBucsfan15 Says:

So true BrianBucs and technically he already has gotten one coach fired but let’s be fair Lovie wasn’t much of a coach. Lol

  33. TBKing13 Says:

The media and “fans” are so quick to turn on a guy. Can nobody comprehend the fact that Jameis Winston has been battling an AC Joint sprain, and a rear deltoid issue in his throwing shoulder, that seems to continue to get re-aggravated each week. Just a few weeks ago, the Bucs had the number 1 passing offense in the league. Once Jameis gets fully healthly, he’ll be back to playing at a superior level. Winston’s a franchise Quaterback who will continue to get better each and every year.

  34. dooshlarue Says:

Why did SAS only use other young QBs that are black as a comparison?
No mention of Goff or Wentz?

    Oh that’s right….he’s a racist POS.
    I hate that MFer.

  35. Mike Johnson Says:

Joe says, If Koetter survives? Why should he? HUH? Give me a reason? I’m not placing most of it on Jamies. Although he shares in the blame. Its a hard road having to carry your Defnse also. I get this feeling..McCown and ASJ are gonna come into Ray Jay and Revive their careers. Why Not? Everybody else has!! No..its not a pile on. What the hell did you Buc fans expect..Mercy? Everybody wants a piece now. You were featured on HBO along with your 2nd comin of Christ coaching staff as being the..gateway to winning this season. Grab some wood fellow Buc Fans..you got lots more critics comin!!

  36. tnew Says:

I’m not surprised by the ESPN reaction. They have been waiting for this moment since he snubbed them on draft night. Like Blake said, probably shouldn’t have been in there after the Buffalo game. I told my son on his first throw in the Carolina game, the ball didn’t come out of his hand right.

All of this commentary, “he looks fine in practice”, makes little difference. I know we have very few athletes on this board, but those that are know, injuries are funny things. In a controlled, pre game or practice setting, you can work around them. Once the game is in motion, those little compensations that you were making are now forgotten and you either re-injure or perform sub par.

What I am surprised buy is the rancid commentary that is coming from the so-called Tampa Bay fan base for two poor games. There is a huge part that really want him to fail.

I have spent more time watching film on multiple NFL teams. Guys, this is not that well coached of a team. There are problems in every facet that relate to detail. Some guys just are head coaches, and I’m afraid we have one. The challenges of calling plays and head coaching are limited to a select few. We just don’t have that.

There are some major issues with the way this team has been constructed. I was a huge Licht fan, but I am now solidly on the fence. The O-line in particular is a mish mash of zone blockers and power blockers that means we don’t really do either well. Marpet has been misused as a center. I was in favor of him at center because I believed his athleticism would be put to more use, but its not. He is a good center, but he excels when he can get out in front to lead the runner through. He is the best Gap style blocker on the team, but he didn’t have one gap style block until after 12 mins into the 3rd quarter versus the Panthers. (Huge hole btw, Martin, a zone blocking style runner, just didn’t see it). I believe Licht and Koetter really want a power/man style scheme (like the Titans btw), but there best power style back is Rodgers. Also, why if you want to be a power, man blocking scheme team do you not carry a full back?

Jameis might turn into a “coach killer” but Koetter has had a huge hand in killing his career. I saw reported on several outlets that this was the softest camp that “most had ever worked” That is out there in several places. Google is your friend. This team looks butter soft. There was mention by Joe I believe about the contrast with what Jacksonville was doing versus the Bucs and how the philosophies were different.

Blame Jameis all you want but this is a total and complete organizational indictment. GMC, Kwon, Ayers, VHIII, Tandy (who was hyped early as the starter), Spence, Baker, Gholston, Grimes, Rodgers, Evans, DSmith, Marpet (hard to put him on this list but he isn’t as dynamic as a center as he was as a guard), Pamphile, Sims and Winston have all regressed versus last season. Martin is pretty much the same guy as last year so all of the excuses guys like me made for him was just a pile of optimistic garbage.

This much regression starts at the top, with failures in planning, preparation and motivation. I think Jameis feels this and is just grasping at anything trying to get the players going. His pregame was obviously a desperate and failed attempt to get emotion from somewhere on this flat team. Cast your eyes away from him for a bit and look around at the players, before he got ridiculous with the whole finger licking thing, the players didn’t care. They weren’t engaged. This is what made the scene so uncomfortable.

  37. tnew Says:

I meant, Some guys just aren’t head coaches.. Sorry

  38. Ed Says:

Winston will NOT be alright until he or a coach corrects-

    Decision making
    Pocket awareness
Seeing the entire field, not staring down Evans or Brate
Throwing motion, shorten it up please
    Long ball inaccuracy
Holding the ball or forcing bad throws when he can just throw the ball away
Start quicker put up some touchdowns in first quarter

These are things that after 3 years should have been coached out of him with corrections put into him.

He isn’t stupid, yes he’s a goofy nerd at time and immature but he is still a kid. He isn’t growing up,fast enough. Play with your head not emotions. Learn by your mistakes. Improve your weaknesses.

  39. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Can some of you old timers fill me in? I became a Bucs fan when I moved to the Tampa Bay area…before that growing up in Cincinnati of course I was a Bengals fan.

This means my “fan” memory only goes back to Trent Dilfer…so can you guys fill me in…

Was the chatter like this when Doug Williams was run out of town or was that totally a Culverhouse play. Where were the fans during all of this.

How about Steve Young. Did fans talk about him the way they do #3 now?

How about Vinnie Testerverde. I was here for Dilfer and it was very similar…fans certainly helped run him out of town.

Those are previous first round “franchise QB” selections. So was Bucs management that bad for selecting all these “losers” that Buc fans thought should be run out of two. Given the fact that three of them subsequently won SB’s elsewhere and Testeverde last twenty years with an appearance in the AFC championship game…hard to criticize the actual draft selection. So does that make Buc management morons for running all those SB winning QB’s?

How about the Buc fan base. Do we hold any responsibility in losing these QB’s? Perhaps most importantly are we getting ready to make four really stupid decisions into 5 by making #3 the next casualty of what have you done for me NOW?

  40. 813bucboi Says:

Steve Smith has a mouth bigger than the Gulf of Mexico. I sure wish Bspn would fire is sorry butt! Geez, I get so sick of hearing his stupid Opinion about stuff he has now idea what he is talking about. Anyone listens to him should have there head examined. All he does is say’s things to get ratings and half of it he doesn’t even believe. Wasted time reading this article. Another reason Bspn is firing people left and right but mostly right…Ha ha.

  46. Lakeland Says:

The reality is 2-6, this is not a delusion

  47. Erik w/ Clean Athletics 'The Kwon Alexander of Bucs fans' Says:

For once, I actually agree with SAS.

Jameis’ lack of execution on throws this year is definitely one of the main reasons we are 2-6 (Jameis, defense, kicking game, playcalling, untimely penalties, & untimely drops).

  48. Pierce Says:

SAS said Doug Martin. Really? He doesn’t pay attention to the Bucs. Winston is 23 and getting little help from defense and social teams (until Murray). I get tired of the sensationalism.

  49. DailyRich Says:

On the one hand, I think Jameis has been over-coached and is too scared to pull the trigger on some throws. On the other, when’s he going to start hitting open guys on these deep balls?

  50. DBS Says:

I can’t remember who use to say this. But something like 17-23 LOSER!

  51. NFLNut Says:

    ************************

Stephen A Smith is an idiot that talks about QBs beating other QBs as if he thinks they’re in a cell and fighting 1-on-1 … he’s a complete moron.

He’s killing Jameis when he was playing with an INJURED THROWING SHOULDER the past 4 weeks rather than “resting” ala Andrew Luck.

Before the serious injury he suffered in week 5, Jameis and the Bucs were 2-2 and a couple missed chip-shot FG’s away from being 3-1 and he was on pace for 4,792 passing yards, 28 TDs & 12 INTs and had a 95.5 passer rating, numbers which were obliterating Mariota, Carr, Ryan, Newton, Roethlisberger, etc.

He also had a HIGHER COMPLETION % and a LOWER INTERCEPTION % than both CARSON WENTZ and DAK PRESCOTT!

Then he got injured and the Bucs season went to pot and his numbers declined a great deal … though even playing half the year with a bum throwing shoulder his numbers are still better than Ryan, Cam, Mariota and many other so-called “top QBs”.

Screamin A’s comeback to the above FACTS (which any non-LAZY journalist could uncover in short order before spouting off on an issue they are entirely ignorant about) would be to lazily speak about “wins” =. However “wins” are a TEAM accomplishment rather than an individual accomplishment (remind me how many rings perhaps the three greatest pure throwers of the football: Marino, Fouts and Moon won in their 40+ years of NFL football … and how many three nobody’s like Trent Dilfer, Jeff Hostettler and Brad Johnson won),

And, the facts are that while Jameis win percentage does stand at .425 and was .472 before his injury, the Buccaneers win percentage in the four years combined before they drafted Jameis was just .250 … Jameis has increased the team’s win percentage by 70-88.9% since being drafted … a kid who lucks into a great situation on a 9 win team would have to go 16-0 to increase his team’s win percentage by a higher amount than Jameis as even 15-1 would be less of an increase than Jameis has brought the Bucs!

Those are FACTS which a non-lazy, ignorant and arrogant journalist or tv analyst could uncover with even a modicum of intelligence and some cursory research!

    **********************

  52. Neil Says:

If Fitzpatrick can perform well with a dejected group of players, then that speaks volumes about how much Jameis has regressed. We shall see. What is evident and consistent is the Bucs looking terrible on offense and the only time Jameis does anything is in the 4th quarter, except now we’re back to the same old Bucs wherein it almost seems guaranteed that we’ll find a way to lose close games or just get blown out.

  53. DBS Says:

People can’t say what Fitz did was garbage time and the D took their foot . But then turn around and when Jameis does the same things say Jameis is a God and genius. BS. Jameis is doing the same in garbage time.

  54. NFLNut Says:

^ My above post could have and should have been YOUR article JOE … whoever you’ve got writing these articles needs work …

  55. Grt2 Says:

Tampa fans are completely insane. Look at these post calling for Winston’s job. I can’t believe I’m reading this stuff. He’s 23, I don’t hear anyone calling for Matt Ryan’s job . Our team isn’t that good just look at the tape.Green Bay has had 2 hall of fame QBs and 3 coaches in 20 plus years and they only have 2 Super Bowls. It takes time so STFU and enjoy the ride .

  56. Finn1985 Says:

Couldn’t have said it any better myself, Grt2.

  57. mike10 Says:

I love Jameis as a person and leader of this team.

But kinda like Tebow, I like him more for his intangibles.

SAS kinda has a point, and look at all the talent he has around him. The opportunity to win is now.

When Jameis gets that fat payday, you think we can go out an acquire a DJax for an easy $12 mil… ha!

He’s got to play better, flat out!

  58. Bird Says:

Stephen a smith is so annoying. And is never right about his picks to win games in any sport.

But he is not completely wrong about #3

Has to play better. More consistent. Should be called
“Weapons going to waste for Winston “

  59. JerseyBuc Says:

Get Gruden in here and sign Cousins, a quarterback that is proven to be competent…….i like Jamies but he is just embarrassing at this point, stupid stuff before the games, stupid stuff during the games, and really has never been a dominant quarterback….i don’t remember one game where he has been “dominant”…..sorry but if we sign this guy to a long term deal, football is dead in Tampa for a long time, this guy just doesn’t have “it” and we better realize before it’s too late……..in fact I’m calling a win this Sunday because we have Fitz back there, he’s going to do what he has to do and that’s it, that’s all we need!

  60. JerseyBuc Says:

And definetely get Licht out of here…..the genius drafts a TE when we already had one of the best in the league….it was a lazy pick…..no wonder we suck

  61. Oxycondoms Says:

Licht makes all his important decisions over wings and beer

  62. Shane Says:

Clearly Jameis operates better in a hurry up style and there are things that he does well like throw the ball over the middle. Deshaun Watson has had a tailored game plan for his strengths so has Wentz. Feel like Koetter tries to tailor Jameis and make him conform to Koetters style of offense which is hurting Jameis. Stick to what he does well then let him evolve naturally.
