Ronald Darby Claims He Was In Uber With Jameis, Says Jameis Wrongly Accused

November 19th, 2017

Has witness.

UPDATED 9:11 a.m. – It seems Jameis Winston has a witness.

And that witness likely knows who did what in the alleged crotch grabbing of a female Uber driver without permission in a fast-food, drive-thru lane in March 2016.

Eagles cornerback Ronald Darby told Jay Glazer of FOX Sports that he was in that same Uber car in Arizona with Jameis and a third passenger he referred to as a “friend.” Darby, who played with Jameis at Florida State, in so many words, said the driver is full of it, by way of the creator, curator and overall guru of Pro Football Talk, the great Mike Florio.

“I felt the need to come forward and clarify some inaccurate accounts of the evening of March 13, 2016 when myself, a friend and Jameis Winston took an Uber ride in Arizona,” Darby said in a statement issued to Jay Glazer of FOX. “There were three of us in the car, not just one as has been reported. Myself and Jameis were in the backseat. I am confident that nothing inappropriate in nature happened in the car that evening and Jameis did not have any physical contact with the Uber driver. The accusations are just not true.”

Well, if it wasn’t Jameis, and Joe assumes Darby isn’t throwing himself on a sword, then it means the “friend” may be the guilty party, if anyone actually grabbed anyone.

The Uber driver, whose last name was not revealed in the initial BuzzFeed exposé, apparently claimed Jameis was the only the passenger in the vehicle when the alleged groping occurred.

Darby, as followers of the Jameis rape accusation at Florida State know, was slapped by FSU for school conduct violations relating to Jameis’ sexual encounter with his accuser back in 2012.

Now, Darby has thrust himself into the middle of the active NFL investigation into Jameis’ Uber fiasco. And the NFL will demand all kinds of phone records from him and more.

Of course, loads of details must be flushed out. Darby didn’t necessarily shed a lot of light today.

Joe has a hunch this football drama will last into the 2018 season. At least Joe will have more to write about during the too-long offseason on a near daily basis.

    FREE JAMEIS

  2. Dewey Selmon Says:

And Darby was with Winston when Jameis was accused of rape. Maybe jameis needs to keep away from Darby?

  3. Mbfists Says:

He may have never done a thing but because his past will always be in question he will always be second guessed.

  4. teacherman777 Says:

Accusations must never imply or equal guilt!

Anybody can accuse anybody of anything!!

    Stop jumping to conclusions!

  5. orlbucfan Says:

What timing. It’s no coincidence either. If a woman has been sexually assaulted, raped, harassed and threatened at her job, that is serious. This sort of nonsense is not. It also makes women like me look bad. Hypocritical to the max. Hey Joe, can you write about more important Buc doings in the off-season? Appreciate it if so. Go Bucs!!

  6. Joel Says:

    3rd person is Bernard Reedy.

That’s a joke but seriously… why was Reedy cut out of the blue?

  7. WyomingBucsFan Says:

    Good point Joe

  8. AlteredEgo Says:

Looks like Ron Darby will be getting $ome………

  9. Joe Says:

why was Reedy cut out of the blue?

Can only guess Bucs think Martino is a better special teams guy. (Not referring to returns, but special teams — plural.)

  10. lightningbuc Says:

Well, if Ronald Darby says so, it must be true.

  11. Roy T. Buford Says:

Innocent until proven guilty, no doubt. At least for a court of law. This is good news for Jameis himself.

Still, Uber called Jameis to say they were suspending his account. Why did Jameis, who knew he is under a mircroscope due to his own doings on the past, who knows the Glazers placed great trust in him and took a risk in paying him millions and making him the face of the franchise, fail to tell anyone in the organization (if he indeed did not report it)? His very first off-season as the Bucs QB.

Just because he is (maybe) not in trouble with the legal system doesn’t mean he’s clean with his employer. Far from it. A very quick way to get on NFL team owners’ bad side is to make them look bad or to blindsind them with negative information about their organization. At best, he avoids suspension and lawsuits, but is still in the doghouse with ownership–who no doubt want storys about their franchise face to be about football success and not sexual abuse accusations.

  12. Jim Says:

Darby has zero credibility. He was with there when the “alleged” rape took place and gave two completely different accounts, one damning and the later one forgiving. Both on record, by the way…

  13. Nate Says:

I support jameis IF he didn’t do it……but @ least tell the buccaneers and your coach???

WHY LIE?? Especially if you have an idea this could come out>>

Glazers STILL make gruden agree to drafting a emergency backup Mayfield or Josh Allen…..

WASH YOUR HANDS OF ALL OF IT!!!!!!

  14. Rick on the Jersey Shore Says:

If the accused is found guilty, Jail‼️
If the accuser is found lying, Jail‼️
Rape and Sexual Molestation is a serious matter and no one is above the law, Celebrity or Regular Joe. Falsely Accusing anyone of anything is a serious matter and should be procecuted with equal vigor of the crime they falsely accused.

  15. Supersam Says:

It’s pretty clear Darby is the guy Winsnone calls when he needs a “witness” or a “fall guy”, Darby has ZERO credibility at this point, and I doubt they even take his statement serious, he says it wasn’t Winsnone and obviously he isn’t gonna accuse himself so who’s the Mysterious crotch grabbing man that was riding up front?…

  16. WyomingBucsFan Says:

Reedy is to much of a saint to be the 3rd person in the uber. I mean he literally helps old people cross the street. Ready must have been cut because they plan on calling up Bobo Wilson at some point.

  17. Kobe Faker Says:

    Great news.

I believe it would be very easy to tell if there was more than 1 passenger. Ist the uber fare more for more than 1 passenger? Winston uber bill will show this

Also they bought food at the mexican drive thru for 1 or 3 people.

Think this will be exposed in 3 weeks

  18. Joe Says:

Darby has zero credibility. He was with there when the “alleged” rape took place and gave two completely different accounts, one damning and the later one forgiving. Both on record, by the way…

Have zero idea what one has to do with the other, unless the Uber driver moved to Arizona from Zephyrhills and once went to school at FSU. A witness is a witness.

  19. Tony from Los Angeles Says:

Those of you who think Darby would just take a fall for Jameis are clueless. Darby is on a different team and making tons of money in his own right – he would never just say something to say it.

Two things are at play here:

    1. Information was about to come out that would put Darby at the scene and he wanted to beat the story to the press. This could be as simple as credit card receipts at the fast food window in question or other eyewitness accounts from whatever place/event they boarded the Uber from.

    2. The onus now comes upon the third person in the vehicle. There is no police report or charges at the moment so there is no obligation to name the third person or for the third person to reveal themselves as the perpetrator. The question now becomes whether Jameis and Darby can strike a deal with investigators to name the third person without revealing that info to the public…

The problem with that is that both Jameis and Darby need that person revealed publicly in order for their public reputations to stand any chance of surviving this in the current landscape. This is not an isolated incident for the two of them and it is being revealed during perhaps the largest time of national awareness about sexual assault in our nation’s history.

They cannot play coy here. If something did happen, then this is a time to throw that third person under the bus and run them over repeatedly.

  20. Roy T. Buford Says:

@orlbucfan, so you think a stranger coming up to you and putting his hands on your crotch, holding it there for three to five seconds, is not a big deal…because it didn’t happen at your job? You think it is nonense and makes women like you look bad? I have a hard time believing ANY female would say that…ever.

Nevertheless, FYI, in most states that act IS sexual assault under the law, and in Arizona, it is a class 5 felony called sexual abuse. But, if you think that’s no big deal, you must hang around the same kind of guys Jameis does.

  21. Horice Says:

Some people can’t see the forest for the sake of the trees! Jameis statement was clear that he wasn’t snitching on the person who actually did it (a dumb rule that young people cling to). Darby also spared the person in his statement. Which leads me to believe that is is someone else that’s a nfl player. For those that say he shouldn’t have put his self in that position.. get off your high horse! He was at a charity event, responsible enough not to drink and drive (like the majority of nfl’ers). Hindsight would say stay away from Darby, and others. I say that after the beating our fans and media give him at the drop of a hat. Turn into Warren Sapp and stop doing for people who will take even your charity and blast you at all costs. Don’t do an interview unless your employer tells you too. He should assume that ALL are out to set him up! Pay some to run your charity. And if you must go out, do it in your hometown! We have proven as a media and fan base to rush to judgement and prove him guilty FIRST! Think how you would feel if the so-called fan base and media did this to you when you haven’t did anything wrong!

  22. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Roy T. Buford Says
“Still, Uber called Jameis to say they were suspending his account.”

Uber always suspends accounts on the word of its drivers. They always take the word of the driver.

A driver accused my wife of leaving a huge mess in his back seat, charged her $100 extra. She didn’t of course. When she complained, Uber suspended her and refused to refund. Our attorney even spoke with them. We decide not to sue, but there it is.

    Don’t trust Uber.

  23. Eric Says:

the gleeful Jameis lunch mob is going to be disappointed again it appears.

  24. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

As I said elsewhere, if that is assault, then I’ve been assaulted dozens of times by women over the years.

    Its not assault.

Its rude and improper, yes, but not assault.

  25. SilverBuc Says:

Ronald Darby did NOT give different accounts of the incendent at FSU. He gave 1 written affidavit, under oath, of the accounts that took place that night.

  26. Kobe Faker Says:

Darby has alot to lose if he is lying

If its proven darby wasnt in the car, nfl would suspend him for lying

15 years of law and order and 8 years of criminal minds, Detective Kobe has figured out the secret friend in the passenger seat

    Kurt Warner

  27. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

In most states, an assault/battery is committed when one person: 1) tries to or does physically strike another, or 2) acts in a threatening manner to put another in fear of immediate harm. Many states declare that a more serious or “aggravated” assault/battery occurs when one: 1) tries to or does cause severe injury to another, or 2) causes injury through use of a deadly weapon. Assaults and batteries can also be pursued via civil (as opposed to criminal) laws.

  28. Roy T. Buford Says:

@Buc Bonzai…not saying Uber is in the right at all, but the fact is they called about an alleged incident as both Uber and Jameis stated so much…and so it’s an issue, that perhaps Jameis didn’t report to the Bucs. And allegations are often as serious as the crimes alleged, especially when/if the allegations are not true and someone innocent is being accused…which by the way, is all the MORE reason to tell your employer about it.

  29. Nate Says:

taking a savior from a guilty witness darby fined by fsu……GREEEAAAT

PS I’m a supreme hetro….ladies love kool nate…..but IF some of yall ever been in a club and had

  30. Tony 12" Pepperoni Says:

    I say B.S

  31. Roy T. Buford Says:

@Buc Bonzai…don’t mix up assault/battery with sexual assualt. In most cases, what is alleged is “sexual assault” in most states; in Arizona, it is a felony of lesser degree, called “sexual abuse.” Yes, it’s rude, improper, but it is a crime. Thank God, so.

  32. tnew Says:

There is a third witness, but I get the sense, many Buc fans are hoping he won’t come forward. It truly is disturbing how many “Buc Fans” want this story to be true. No one here or in the media knows all of the facts, and there is probably no way to ever prove any of it.

The only things that are known is:

    1) Winston was in Arizona and took a ride in a Uber

    2) There was a report filed with Uber alleging that Winston was involved in an incident that Uber deemed inappropriate enough to suspend his account.

    Thats all.

Everything else has been agenda driven spin.

I quit assuming public figures were telling me the truth during the Clinton presidency, but I also realise for every 4 accusations made against a public figure at least 3 come out as not valid.

The shame from my perspective is the glee and vitriol coming from so many “fans”. Winston, to this point, has done little to create public embarrassment for the organisation or the community. The only misstep as a Buc that is verified was the comment regarding girls at the school. Thats all.

This groping incident will play out. If he did it, then he is really not really bright and he will get everything he deserves. If he didn’t do it and didn’t report it, as a former 21 year old, I’m not heaping the blame that some of you are on him. I made strategic choices in every job I’ve had to withhold information that wouldn’t serve me well, especially things I felt could be put in the past. This incident happened 20 months ago, its pretty safe that Winston thought it was dead and buried.

Darby coming out is a good thing for knowing the facts. If he was in the car, and it can be proven, the Uber driver has to account for a pretty big omission of fact. (BTW, I do doubt Winston was rolling around by himself at 2 in the morning, that isn’t something that 21-22 year olds do much of) If it can be proven Darby wasn’t there, then it will imply a coverup, then Winston will be the one having to answer questions regarding his account of the event.

I hope the allegations are false. I am in no way surprised to the response of the media both national or local. Unfortunately, the Buc fans reacted exactly like I would anticipate. I will NEVER understand the desire from so much of this fanbase to hope for the failure both on and off of the field for Winston.

  33. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

To me, this is a clear indicator that at least significant elements of the drivers story have been fabricated.

  34. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Then I want to sue a lot of people and at least two schools.

  35. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Well said, tnew.

    And I agree, Blake.

Apparently there is no help for Joe unless the Uber driver’s name is Erica Kinsman.

  39. JimmyJack Says:

Boy, I sure am glad to hear this and hopefully Darby is being honest and Winston is cleared of this……Still gotta wait for everything to come out because it’s still a he/said/she/said bit.

At least for now we can feel a little more settled about our team and enjoy the game. It was looking very bleak the past 2 days.

  40. TheArmchairAthlete Says:

Couldn’t have said it better myself, Tnew – I agree completely.

Many of you who call yourselves Bucs fans should be ashamed of yourselves.

  41. JimmyJack Says:

Christ Bonzai you are one sick puppy if you think it’s no big deal for a cab driver to get grabbed in their privates.

I don’t know who raised you dude but you really got some serious freaking problems man.

  42. Karl Says:

What is even more interesting is where Jamis was the weekend before. Sounds like he was out west for doing good. https://www.christianpost.com/news/nfl-quarterback-jameis-winston-girlfriend-baptized-athletes-spiritual-retreat-159051/

  43. JB Says:

Where is the “America’s Quarterback” moniker, Joe? LOL

  44. Silent_Partner Says:

Well, if it wasn’t Jameis, and Joe assumes Darby isn’t throwing himself on a sword, then it means the “friend” may be the guilty party, if anyone actually grabbed anyone.

No, it means that they didn’t believe anyone in the car did anything, which is what Winston said he argued with Uber with after the fact when a voice mail was left for him. As I said yesterday, this is how this went. She complained after the fact. How that’s Winston’s problem or even Darby’s problem to identify an anonymous guy when they didn’t learn about this until later is beyond me. She’s already gotten the number of passengers wrong and has already gotten the description of who was sitting next to her wrong, but yeah, throw your franchise QB under the bus for an anonymous Uber driver. SMH. Next, Buc fans will say Winston needs to be cut because a girl at a night club says he pushed up on her butt.

If anything though, Buc fan is predictable. You should be protesting that dumb HC I told you should have never been promoted, which is the real root of your problems along with the GM that has whiffed on high picks and has a defense and offensive line that stink.

  45. Silent_Partner Says:

    Jim ,

So we’re just making s– up now? He gave the same account of that night over and over again as did Chris Casher from day one. The only person’s story that changed 6 or 7 times (not a typo) was Erica Kinsman’s story. SMH.

  46. Lord Corn Says:

lol at anyone thinking Darby would just make up this story or make up the fact that he was in the uber as well with another person just to help a friend. If he wasn’t there then making this statement is about the dumbest thing he could do for his career.

At a minimum they will search his records to verify it as best they can ; as he’s now part of the investigation. If anything it’s more logical that he was in fact in the car and is making a statement knowing he’s going to be involved in any investigation.

This is an insanely huge blow to the credibility of the drivers statement (if there were indeed multiple passengers). We already know the uber call stated “you or someone else in your vehicle”

  47. Lord Corn Says:

    Silent Partner

I read every page of the case files / investigation / statements / reports and do not recall Darby ever changing his statement or story

  48. mark2001 Says:

tnew…no Bucs fan would want this allegation to be true. It would be a disaster for the organization. Glad to see a witness step up, and would find it even more credible for the other guy to step up as well. That being said, if the driver said there was only one person in the car and Darby was in the car with Jameis and can somehow prove it, at least she has lied on at least more than one count of events and tarnished her statement.

  49. Silent_Partner Says:

    Lord Corn ,

It never did. Meanwhile, Kinsman’s story changed literally 6 or 7 times, including leaving out that she had slept with her boyfriend she was keeping secret from her family earlier in the day and who she was trying to avoid all that night when her friends were asking her where she had gone when he was looking for her and she wasn’t answering her texts or phone. It’s something that has always bothered me about that case is that is totally never brought up like it’s insignificant.

  50. AlteredEgo Says:

There is a TON of back channel chatter…the media/the NFL for various reason legal and ethical can only only print and say what we now know….

  51. mark2001 Says:

And please Jameis…please…for your own sake…don’t ever ride in a car alone with a woman unless it is your girl friend, sister or another close female relative.

  52. Lamarcus Says:

Jw needs to stay away from darby it seems. But I heard this is why we didn’t draft cook. Just bad company

  53. Lord Corn Says:

    Silent

For me it was the hunting ground documentary. They used Erica as a witness and from what I heard they present her story as if she was drugged; while omitting the fact that multiple toxicologist reports scientifically proved she wasn’t. They’re also tweeting about this already assuming Winston’s guilt. It’s absolutely disgusting.

  54. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

Darby has zero credibility in my eyes after the way the investigation, or lack thereof, at FSU went. I pray this isn’t true with these new allegations but either way this is the kind of mess we don’t need. The way the league punishes players will make this a worrisome time if you are a Bucs fan.

  55. LakeLand Says:

  56. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

  58. The Anomaly Says:

I’m just tired of Winston being in the news for the wrong things.

It’s old. It’s tired. And it’s done. No more.

  59. NFLNut Says:

JAMEIS should SUE her for defamation just like he sued Kinsman … do NOT let these scammers get away with dragging your name through the mud!

AND … even if the lady did get touched that night, as long as Jameis was not the one who did it, she should still be sued!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As for Ronald Darby … the Police found him credible in the past and he’s now a millionaire himself that has everything to lose and nothing to gain for lying for Jameis … I absolutely believe him!

    **********************

  60. Waterboy Says:

I’m not sure of what happened but I do know that Winston is a target so he has to be extra cautious of the situations he puts himself into. Much more cautious than the average person. It’s a tough life for a young person but like Derrick Brooks said awhile back while discussing the teachable moment after the elementary school incident “That’s the world you live in”.

  61. Silent_Partner Says:

    Lord Corn ,

I was more disgusted by this other Winston guy who was falsely accused in either that documentary or another one where he and the girl had drunken sex, and then the guy got sent up the way for that. Guy was like in Harvard law school or something and ended up having his life ruined.

Kinsman’s story was totally unbelievable on so many fronts from day one, even her friends said she willingly left with Jameis and his friends. It seemed obvious to me that the girl got caught in a huge ball of wax owed to her having her secret boyfriend to appease, her family to appease, and she turned to the obvious quick line of “he raped me” to get out of it, not knowing the repercussions that would have when she continued to take it down the rabbit hole. I mean her aunt’s proclamation that her niece would never sleep with a black guy as to why she knew she was raped lets you know the rocket scientists in that family we’re dealing with. Of course, that other DNA profile in her panties said otherwise.

  62. Bobby M. Says:

One last thought on this situation…..Winston does anything that doesnt exhibit full cooperation, he gets suspended. Whether he did anything or not, here’s the issue for management. If the Bucs crap out this season, ownership wont know whether Winston will be suspended next season….which means they wont know whether to just ride out the current staff for another wasted year. It makes deciding on a new coach, that much harder as well as recruiting a new coach. It makes signing D-Jax to all that money, a total waste. And the team is left with a very limited window to determine if they should sign Winston to an extension, bring in a new coach, how they should draft, etc. Its an absolute mess behind the scenes….even if he’s innocent simply because he’s been uncooperative. Now he HAS TO PROVE INNOCENCE because Goodell has shown no concern with he said/she said….You make the NFL look bad, you pay.

  63. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Darby has ZERO credibility at this point,

Agree. This is like getting backing from Bill Clinton or our p grabber in chief or Roy Moore.

Isn’t Darby the moron who used his cellphone to record the sex…then wiped before the cops got it?

At some point when bad stuff….even if it’s only horrible PR keeps happening when your around a certain group of guys…you figure it out and change friends and habits.

The law has NOTHING to do with this. #3 is not in jeopardy there. This will NOT be decided in a court of law but rather the court of public opinion. #3 has already soiled that so he needs to be squeaky clean.

Again what amazes me most is wondering who the F is advising and taking care of #3? If he needs baby sitters PROVIDE THEM!!! It’s just a cost of doing business!!!!

  64. Macklemore Says:

Before the police could question Darby and Casher for the first sexual assault case, Winston’s attorney met with them and they “crafted affidavits.” The police never interviewed Jameis Winston. Never. The State Attorney’s office never interviewed him. The police did not even attempt to do an investigation. “”Senior Florida State athletic officials met privately with Mr. Winston’s lawyer, they decided, on behalf of the university, not to begin an internal disciplinary inquiry, as required by federal law.”” This last sentence explains why FSU ended up paying 950,000$ to the victim as a result of the civil lawsuit. And as we all know, despite saying he was innocent, JW ponied up a settlement as well. Now a reasonable person has to ask why Darby didn’t step forward when this happened and Uber suspended Winston’s account.

  65. Kobe Faker Says:

This whole mess should clear up in a week

The uber fare for single passenger is totally different price than with 3 passengers

Winstons credit card, uber driver and uber company should have that information easily available

**it seems jameis doesnt want to rat out his friend who groped the driver. As long as jameis is not involved of the groping, nfl and bucs dont care

It seems the uber driver knew this wouldnt be a big splash news if it was just jameis friend i stead of jameis himself

  66. tval Says:

    Macklemore is a liar

  67. The Anomaly Says:

Oh geez…another race card. Joe, can you please do something about these race card dealers?

  68. Tackleblockwin Says:

  77. The Anomaly Says:

LOL. Weak and lazy. I have no argument so I’ll play the race card.

Again I accept that this is very much like the crab legs…shouting grab her by the P in the cafeteria…the bb gun incident…it’s a youthful prank. Who knows that they said to the driver? Even if we feel the driver overreacted which is a distinct possibility…there is NO excuse being out at 2AM…loaded…with a friend who was there for the most serious incident of your life.

#3 came within a whisker of losing his spot as the #1 pick in the draft…did he learn from that lesson? Hire some freaking bodyguards and baby sitters if you MUST go out drinking with a person of Darby’s reputation.

  82. tval Says:

Darbys reputation is sterling, idiot. Racists defame him. He’s a devout Christian and outspoken about it. To hell with you if you don’t respect that.

  83. tval Says:

You guys have NADA. MOVE ON. you can’t debate me on this because I actually respect women, and good men. You do neither..only race matters to a racist.

  84. tval Says:

You are no “anomaly”..fairly common, actually..rofl!!

  86. Silent_Partner Says:

Moral of the story, next time use Uber Eats or Grub Hub. Otherwise, people who don’t go to sleep at 8:00 themselves will tell you that you should have been in bed at that time when you’re in your off-season because any accusation against you must be true based on one that was obviously false from 5 years ago.
