“He Is A Homeless Version Of Cam Newton”

November 5th, 2017

Harsh words for Bucs QB.

It is getting ugly out there for the Bucs.

And in particular, for America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.

He had such a horrible game last week against Carolina, a talking head for a national sports outlet referred to Jameis’ current traits as those of a person living on the streets.

NFL yakkers prickly Pete Prisco, heavy metal, head-banging Jason La Canfora, gambling addict Nick Kostos and Will Brinson tore into the Bucs during their weekly picks against the spread on CBSSports.com, Brinson was direct in his comments guffawing and mocking Jameis, as heard on the “Pick Six” podcast, .

“Jameis against Carolina, he is a homeless version of Cam Newton right now in terms of inaccuracy and wildly throwing it everywhere he can,” Brinson said. “Receivers aren’t helping him out. That defense is a mess.”

La Canfora said the vibe he is getting of the Bucs speaks doom. He is of the mind there is significant chemistry or locker room issues and all but said the Bucs are playing games with Jameis’ injury.

“Would I be stunned if this is the week that Tampa gets off the mat and showed some pulse? Nnnooo… I guess I wouldn’t,” La Canfora said. “But I am also not really buying it. The fact that they finally had a defense last week and the offense offered nothing in return.

“I think Jameis Winston is more injured than is being let on. I don’t think there is a whole lot of any esprit de corps among skill positions on their offense right now. I think they are wallowing. I think they are feeling sorry for themselves.

“I think they are wondering, OK, who is my coach going to be next year and do they fire the GM too and can I still be here and will I get my contract extension if they fire the GM? I don’t get a great vibe there.”

Prisco added, “I think the Bucs have major problems.”

Joe gets a bad vibe about this team, too, but just can’t put a finger on it. Joe should have picked up the scent in training camp when winning Bucs coach Dirk Koetter groused just about daily about bad practices. That was a major tip off Joe brushed off.

There is no logical conclusion Joe can find how the Bucs pull off an upset today. The only reach Joe can find is that both teams are on five-game winning and losing streaks. Sooner or later those streaks snap.

Never have been and never will be a football expert, but typically when I’m paying attention and also genuinely care about something ( such as our Bucs) I can assess what’s going on fairly accurately. But I’m thoroughly stumped as to what ails this team (never just one thing of course). I believe there are people in that building that care enough to right the ship though.

  2. BucJ Says:

I think we developed a lazy, losing culture. Just a back up plan for veterans who don’t get signed by major teams. They don’t even play at the level of their contracts anyway. They barely scrape the barrel and I’m being generous. Think about it. Every nfl veteran wants to play for the Titans or Raiders because they built a solid team from the GM position to coaching and even the roster. The bucs are the complete opposite. Who would want to play for the bucs when most players aren’t that motivated other than to receive their game checks at the end of their game. It’s a recipe for disaster, joe.

  3. Pete Gavalas Says:

Every time I read the words “americas q.b.” , i laugh

  4. BucJ Says:

Also, I have an idea for our new coaching staff. Replace Mike Smith with our D-line coach. And offer Rice to coach our D-line. Oh and please replace our QB coach

  5. Bird Says:

Ouch. That is a little harsh

  6. Off the Cuff Says:

We need players who can’t stand losing games or loafing in practice. We need coaches who don’t accept complacency and aren’t afraid to call a complete game plan.

On both sides of the ball, we never give the opponent anything to think about. I swear it’s the same plays we run over and over again.

  7. Defense Rules Says:

Brinson & La Canfora comments were quite damning, but Prisco pretty much summed it up … “I think the Bucs have major problems.” Everyone (including you Joe) was so high on this team at the start of training camp … we’d finished 9-7 the year before & now it was going to be onward & upward: playoffs here we come. And yet just 7 games into the 2017 season, we’re now talking about a Top-5 pick in the next draft.

I agree with Pete Prisco … I also “think the Bucs have major problems.” Some of those seem to indicate a lack of talent at certain positions (mostly on defense but also at a couple of positions on offense). That’s on management. Some problems seem to indicate ineffective game-planning, predictable play-calling & consistently poor execution at critical junctures. That’s on the coaching staff.

But I’m now thinking that more than anything else this team lacks strong leadership. They lack the type of leadership that can DEMAND accountability on the field … in games AND in practice … much like Warren Sapp used to in our ‘glory days’. This team is playing soft, and I think the biggest reason for that is lack of strong leadership. I thought Jameis was the type of leader who could DEMAND accountability, but I don’t think that anymore. He seems to be doubting himself right now … and I’m convinced others are sensing that, and it’s being reflected in the team results. Maybe La Canfora is right, that Jameis “is more injured than is being let on.” Or maybe his coaches have turned him into something he’s not, and he’s caught somewhere in the twilight zone between who they are coaching him to be & who he really is. Jameis has to play better in any event for this team to turn this season around.

  8. Toe to Leather Says:

Even when times were bad last year you always felt Winston was there encouraging the team trying to insert a more positive culture. The team seemed to be growing in that respect. Trying to help this team, Licht brought in some free agents that perhaps have taken over the locker room which was once led by Jameis. I am not there, so I don’t know but could this be a big part of the problem?

  9. StAugBuc Says:

Bucs have only lost 4 in a row. You said 5 here and on GameDay thread.

  10. Tom Edrington Says:

Why is Jameis still “America’s Quarterback?”……..I think young Mr. Watson was taking that title until he blew out his ACL….

  11. BFFL Says:

It really isn’t a mistery. We saw players clowning aroung at camp and a HC that didn’t put a stop to it. When the HC is referred to as a players coach then you got problems. Its pretty simple. Watch how Belicheat does it. If you slack and clown around at practice then you’re gone no matter how much you make or how good people think you are. Belicheat doesn’t go on camera saying how great players are. He approaches everything with intentions to flight complacency because there is a fine line in the NFL and if you’re not focused or working harder than your opponent then you lose.

  12. Reach87 Says:

Yep, no mystery here at all. Simple as that. JBF posers got it figured out. Bucs didn’t do what you wanted in training camp, how you’ve seen (as presented in the media and by other posers on this site) one if 31 other teams supposedly do it, or IAW how you did it in your vast years as a head coach, so therefore our head coach is a bum and lets bring back gruden. Understand the passion, but just about 90 percent of this line of thinking is based on faulty presumptions and bad math. Lets play a more disciplined offensive game today and be agressive on defense. Must stop the run game and the RB in the passing game. Go Bucs!

  13. DoNUTS Says:

BFFL nice post. You are dead on correct with complecancy and this team. NE way is proven with new players each year. This is not luck but I greater overall method of operating a team.

  14. Buccaneer scotty Says:

Yeah that’s real bad because cam sucks so bad he made our D look good! But the truth is the truth and Winston is terrible

  15. Lakeland Says:

    Total Disarray!

  16. StPeteBucsFan Says:

“Homeless” version of Cam Newton? What the hell does that even mean. I certainly get the Cam Newton reference…Cam was no more accurate than #3 this past Sunday. He missed several deep balls….Oh noes!!! He made plays when he had to and that’s the difference.

But “Homeless”. Referencing the Buc’s locker room and a belief that nobody wants #3 anymore. Sorry…it’s just hard for me to buy the load even if these dudes are highly paid “professionals” and I’m a lowly blogger.

  17. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    BTW

Referencing both Cam and #3’s inaccuracy Sunday…we really should cut them some slack because the wind was almost howling…had to make timing deep routes pretty challenging.

  18. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Scotty you basically seem like a troll regarding JW. I am guessing you were a Mariota lover and waiting for JW to struggle a bit. He will turn this around eventually. As of now he is one of the highest performing QBs in the history of the league but a couple of bad games and you want him gone.

However, I do agree with the defense. The defense did not play well last week as much as Carolina’s offense just stinks. The Panthers didn’t seem to even want to win, but the Bucs couldn’t even make a real game of it.

  19. NCBucsfan15 Says:

Joe by now you should stop with the America’s QB,Pro Boweler writing in every article. I am a fan of Jameis but he was never either. Your argument calling him AMQB doesn’t hold up and never really did to want to call him that. The Pro Bowler part definitely needs to stop. He was what the 8th alternate that does not make him a true ProBowler. He got in cause no one else wanted to show up to the game. I hope in time both come true but he is not now by a long shot.

  20. Jim Says:

Winston is not “terrible”; it’s the idea that you take a bad team and just add a Number 1 draft pick QB, then cruise to the Super Bowl; that’s what’s “terrible”. Been watching this unfold for three years…

  21. AceofAerospace Says:

I’ll say it again. On Hard Knocks, I saw waaaay too much yuking it up and grab assing. Not nearly serious enough for a team that had proven nothing. Nothing! Now it shows on the field. 2-6, here we come.

  22. Bobby M. Says:

They went all in on a QB that simply isn’t there yet….That being said, there’s too much inconsistent play surrounding a QB that struggles with getting in a groove himself. The lure of the deep ball to Jackson seems to derail more drives then keep them going. I think Winston will be his best version in a system with much less emphasis on play action/bombs…and more on quick strike/mismatch reads. Basically get Howard on the field more…less of Jackson.

  23. Rob Says:

America’s turnover machine, the human ATM, Jame “miss” Winston, is not who Joe thinks he was. America’s quarterback…..cue the famous Ric Flair WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Each time I read that America’s qb nonsense I have to laugh. Jame “miss” is hardly America’s qb, he may not finish the season or this game as the Buc qb if he keeps turning the ball over. Pray for the Bucs today, it may get nasty real fast. Go Bucs!

  24. Not there yet Says:

You know we have a lineman with the skills of Sapp just not the hear of Sapp. We have a couple linebackers with the skills of Mr. Brooks as well. They both had to earn the status they have today not only on the field but in the locker room and in practice so this is where leadership falls short. Couple things can happen change the guys leading the locker room or change coach and gm to someone tougher but if they are tougher they’d end up getting rid of the cancer players anyway. It’s really that simple we’ve been losing over a decade despite the talent. The fact that o defensive lineman is not getting sacks is really an excuse. It’s bad when players don’t realize they are the problem

  25. BigMacAttack Says:

Jameis needs to stop listening to his coaches and just go out there and do his thing. He needs to wing it and put up 50 points. Hopefully our defense won’t give up 60.

  26. Buccaneer scotty Says:

Never wanted Mariota! I did want Winston and iam not trolling at all iam just sick of everyone including Joe kissing his ass because we took him #1 he has been terrible! Iam in shock of how bad his passes are shoulder or not he is so frustrating I can’t stand it! especially when you see went and Watson in the passes they throw they are on the money those guys are dropping dimes

  27. Supersam Says:

Time to call it as it is, Winston is not a good QB, psssh at this point I’d take Josh Mccown back, dude is have a great year completing 70 percent of his passses with a garbage receiving core. How bout that joe.

  28. Bucs Fan Since ‘76 Says:

Jameis is hurt and the defense stinks. That about sums it up.

  29. Bird Says:

    Rob.

The human ATM. Haven’t heard that yet. Pretty creative. Touché

  30. RealityCheck Says:

Jameis frequently locks on to his 1st option and throws no matter what the coverage.

Jameis forces plays instead of taking sacks, leading to crucial turnovers.

Jameis has no touch on the deep ball whatsoever.

Jameis frequently throws high, leading to dropped passes or messing up the timing on a screen.

Jameis’s best pass is 20 yard directly down center field to one of our TEs.

Jameis scrambles like a new born giraffe.

    Jameis is a spirited competitor.

Jameis shouldn’t take all the blame, but I expected more progression from him at this point, with these weapons. Been a fan for decades, and I’m just tired of the same old song and dance sell job, increased ticket prices, and then another poor performing year for the team. This team has no bite. I want to see mean. I want to see aggressive. What I see is guys going through the motions for a paycheck.

  31. Bird Says:

I like Jameis. I really do. Great kid. He will do great things after football as well… but. It’s ok to call it as you see it cause it’s plain as day
He is not playing well. To inconsistent.

Jameis misses open receivers , it’s bad route running.

Jameis underthrows or overthrow desean Jackson for sure touchdowns and it’s Jackson fault cause he is a cancer in locker room. (Meanwhile every other qb with desean has made that play)

Jameis puts up 3 points and it’s coaches fault.

But yet when they win , Jameis gets all the credit and posters tell everyone to go to hell. I carry about wins. Not his stats to date. Hope he turns it around
But so careless with the ball. And all these people claIming they need to dink a d dunk to move the ball, they have those short options but Jameis is a thrower. He is choosing to select the home run play

  32. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

My friend agrees there is a team chemistry problem, and thinks Licht helped destroy the team chemistry by bringing in DJax and Chris Baker.

  33. Buccaneer scotty Says:

Djack and Baker are cancer !!!!!!!! Never should have picked them up Eavans and Godwin are just fine . Wish we would have dumped those hood rats at the trade deadline!!!

  34. denjoe Says:

Jason and Dirk got drunk off of their Mild success, last year and took the foot off of the gas pedal and declared themselves gurus. Jason ignored glaring needs and Dirk decided he wanted the players to love him. “Hows that working for ya.” Dirk is still learning to be a HC, Jason just needs to go. I’m tired of his one great free agent and a bunch of bums every year, and out thinking himself in the draft. His Job is team building!

  35. Tdub Says:

any team on losing streak has problem soo this article is like many others from so called football experts like Jason La confora, telling us what we already know!! I dont think it is anything like what they saying . the qb needs to be who he supposed be, a star!! and the defense needs turnovers!! thats it!!

  36. Mike Johnson Says:

When you are playing a badly injured Qb game after game with the good chance of injuring him worst, that says all you need to know about this Buc team. Koetter is thinkin he can have the greatest seasonal comeback of all time. But it ain’t happening. I said from Jump the HBP thing was not good for our Bucs. The SOS calls are gonna get louder after this afternoon.

  37. DB55 Says:

I figured out why the Bucs are losing. It took a while but after careful film review I finally got it. Ready?

    DB55 Says:
    August 20th, 2017 at 9:59 pm
Alan Cross = team MVP. You heard it here first

We cut our most valuable player. True or false since he’s been cut we haven’t won a game.

Damn I’m good! (And also very hung)

  38. DB55 Says:

    Over. Hungover. I’m very …well I’m both I guess. 😝😏

  39. Destinjohnny Says:

Time to hire brooks as the gm.
We need to get a legit team president.
We need to spend money money money on the
Scouting dept and hire Jon back.
Jason is an okay scout and that is it.
    He has no vision.

  40. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Offense has been good most of the time. They had one bad week and everyone turns on them.

Tampa fans need to grow the heck up.

  41. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I had wanted Mariota, as many who are not new here will recall.

But Winston has won me over. That you short-sighted fans are giving up on him is stupid. The guy is 23 and is more advanced than QBs two years older. Of course he is making some bonehead mistakes here and there, that’s part of the growing process.

Tampa fans need to learn how to support their team.

  42. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Rick Stroud wrote a great piece in this morning’s Times titled…”Trashed too soon”.

Stroud examines how quickly we turn on our franchise QB’s.

Doug Williams…Steve Young…Vinny Testeverde…Trent Dilfer to Josh Freeman.
But out of all of them only JFRO was a genuine bust. The other four are OUR mistakes as Buc fans. We have the patience of a two year old!!!!

So we ran them and three of them go on to win SB’s!!!! And Testeverde played 20 seasons and made it to an AFC Championship game.

Yeah so you’ll forgive me if I ignore all this angst about #3. My only concerns are his health. If his arm is OK we’ll be fine. But watching Andrew Luck…realizing how many baseball seasons #3 has on his arm…just makes me a little apprehensive.

  43. Joeypoppems Says:

Coughlin just benched Fournette, their best offensive player, for breaking a team rule.

Thats the type of hardass leadership this franchise needs. Hold players accountable!

  44. I Bleed Red Says:

Now the experts have Mariota in the top 5

  45. adam from ny Says:

what exactly does it mean to be the “homeless version of cam newton”?…

that itself is a really crazy comment!…

is jameis now becoming a man without a country?

  46. unbelievable Says:

Good insight as usual St. pete….

Also, Hard Knocks curse is a b!tch
