Dirk Koetter Talks Loafs

November 7th, 2017

After Sunday’s beating in New Orleans, Joe called out the loafers on Alvin Kamara’s first-half touchdown: Robert McClain, Vernon Hargreaves, T.J. Ward and Kwon Alexander.

It was painfully obvious, and it was sickening to see four offenders on one play. That’s a very rare occurrence and a sad commentary on the state of the Bucs.

That play, among other reasons, is why many fans and some media are out there chattering about Tampa Bay quitting.

Formerly winning head coach Dirk Koetter was asked about bad effort yesterday, and he said it was evident and began to define it as it would be done in the film room.

“When you’re a coach, usually what you’re looking for on that is change in speed. Does a player, is he running a certain speed and then he either speeds up or slows down?” Koetter said. “That’s typically what every defensive coach I’ve ever been around [looks at]. Did we have some? Yes. We do in every game. You’re looking for every body to sprint to the ball, but they especially have a tendency to show up on screens that are down the field a little bit and they did. Those are also plays that we missed tackles on, so that’s a bad combination.”

Here’s the offensive screen-play video — from the 8-yard-line action. Justin Evans couldn’t wrap up Kamara but he becomes the hero of the play because at least he was trying.

Joe’s not sure how widespread lapses in football desire get fixed midseason among professionals. This has been such a painful 36 hours for Joe.

Welp I see McDonald hustling per usual. Not sure what 93 is doing oh wait he’s getting quadruple teamed lmao #LAME

And that’s what you want to pay 13mil a year for? Lol, 1st round pick? Okay!

Bucs were 9-7 last year with Lovie Smith’s team. Say what ya want but I’ve heard for 15 years Gruden won the Super Bowl with Tony Dungy’s team. After a full season and a half they’ve all quit on Jason Licht Dork Koetter The Glazers and the fans. Forget taking a knee they are laying down! It’s safe to say that right now it hasn’t been this bad since the days of Sam Wyche. Schiano was awful. Raheem wasn’t given much to work with and wasn’t ready. But this dude here tops those guys. He’s got talent on both sides of the ball. Franchise QB in his 3rd year who he has coached since he was drafted and if SOMETHING ISNT DONE TO STOP DORK HE COULD RUIN HIS CAREER…

  3. SmokeymountainBucfan Says:

Evans surely wasn’t loafing when he knocked the spit out of Lattimore. He’s coming up on a payday, wonder if his lack of loafing this past Sunday and a suspension will effect his bank

  4. BUC MAN Says:

THEY LOOKED LIKE THEY HAD THEIR FINGER NAILS PAINTED AND THEY DIDN’T WANT TO GET THEM MESSED UP , THESE ARE SORRY PLAYERS IF I WAS THE COACH I WOULD TELL THEM AFTER WATCHING FILM OF THE AFRAID TO TACKLE BOYS,,, IF I SEE THIS AGAIN IN THE FILM ROOM YOU WILL BE SHIP OUT THE NEXT DAY . I CAN’T BELIEVE WHAT I JUST WITNESS ON FILM , SOME OF THESE PLAYERS NEED TO CALL THESE SISSY BOYS OUT , SORRY SORRY SORRY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

With the 2018 nfl draft coming up, the bucs have many glaring needs on both sides of the ball. Quite frankly, I don’t believe in the Jameis hype. He still makes terrible throws, under throws a lot,and forces stupid turnovers. Our o-line is in shambles, our running core is weak (asides from Peyton Barber and Jaquizz Rodgers), on the defense, I see more problems. DE, DT, CB, S. You know why we have this many problems? Because of licht. We would be in much better shape if he hadn’t drafted so many busts. Noah Spence is pretty disappointing. I understand he’s injured, but the same shoulder injury is pretty scary and he might not last much longer if it tears again. Gerald McCoy, Ayers, Baker and McDonald are severely underachieving. Our line backing core isn’t as ferocious as before (LD54 is the only one balling out. Kwon may have had a bad game, but still). Our corners are shaky. VH3 has been playing okay the last 3 weeks besides the Saints game. Ryan Smith would probably be more consistent if Jason and Kotter put him in his natural position instead of stupidly putting him as a safety. This offseason we’re gonna need a major rehaul. Get rid of our coaching staff, HC, DC, GM. And trade some players for picks while replenishing the positions during the offseason. Our team won’t be good in one season, but two should be plenty considering the lions, titans, saints, raiders, jaguars did it. Listen bucs fans, you may disagree with me, but do you still want Jameis to turn over the ball plenty of times while he’s healthy? Or Dirk Koetter make predictable calls? What about Mike Smith and his defensive schemes?

  6. Clodhopper Says:

Then Koettler did nothing about it and spent the rest of the day in the quarterbacks room.

  7. DoNUTS Says:

DB55 expects 300 lb lineman to catch RBs running to the opposite field. DB55 what about KWON? Since when do you dive toward the RB when he is 15 feet away?

    Be fair u putz.

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I have been impressed with Justin Evans’ efforts….although they don’t always end up being successful, he is always near the ball…..I think he will improve with snaps and some coaching.

  9. Bucsfanman Says:

I’m at work so I can’t see the grab. I did see the play…unfortunately!
This team looks like it has just thrown in the towel, front to back.
LOAFS?! 60 minutes, that’s your workday! And you can’t lace them up for 60 minutes?!
If nothing else, this team makes a “ham and egger” like myself feel like I can play this game! I’ve got one good knee that I can trip somebody with! Put me in coach! I’m good for A play!

@tmax- Didn’t catch you yesterday but to your point, you cannot defend a single player from Sunday’s game. Yea, GMC stunk! Then again, did anyone play well?! With heart?!
Nobody got off the plane! This team is un-watchable.

  10. Oxycondoms Says:

It’s the kneeling mentality of NFL players it’s starting to affect effort level on the field

  11. MFife84 Says:

First post here, but I grew up in Indiana and never really got into football till about 20 years ago. I was then looking for a team to be “my team” and low & behold I found myself becoming a Buc’s fan. I never believed that you have to be a fan of the team(s) that play in your hometown/state. I did not ask to be born where I was born. Anyway, this year was the first time I was excited for this team in quite a while. I rarely get to actually see a game and listen to most on the radio. This one was the last of the season for me. I am just done the 2017 campaign and if there are not serious changes (front office/coaches/certain players) after this season, I won’t be supporting them in 2018 either.

This team is a joke that’s about as funny as a CBS sitcom, which is to say, not funny at all.

  12. Q Says:

There was the bootleg by brees in saints territory and Gerald slowed down on the chase just saying

  13. Mike Johnson Says:

Koetters gone. If I were him and Smitty, I’d already have my feelers out for a college job. Handwriting is not only on the wall, its been signed by the Glazers. They have already started there search. The chants of, We want Gruden are gonna be quite embarrasing come that halftime.

I guess McDonald is a buck fifty? It’s not about speed it’s about effort you putz. Read what Koetter said you illiterate sob.

    Mike Johnson

Did you notice that the only former hc that is still in the nfl is Raheem? All the other ones are back in college. I wonder if there’s some meaning behind that?

  16. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

Uhh I can see calling out a few guys on this play. But Kwon?

I think it’s pretty obvious that he assumed Evans had him down, and as soon as he realized he wasn’t, he put a 300 pounder on his a$$ in efforts to get to Kamara.

  17. I'm a Tandyman Bucs Fan Says:

Then why does Dirk the Quirk keep playing people that don’t give effort?

  18. 813bucboi Says:

did anyone see Skip and Shannon yesterday morning?…..

Shannon said the bucs and giants are finding out the hard way that they never should’ve fired lovie and coughlin….they hired an OC to manage a QB instead of having someone manage the team…..its no coincidence both teams are struggling now…Skip agreed 1000% percent and said dirk is a dead man walking and either were sold on the hires because they weren’t anything special….they are who they are…COORDINATORS….nothing more nothing less….

they also picked the saints to win the division….GO BUCS!!!!

  19. LargoBuc Says:

813 Dirk should have just been retained as O.Co. They could’ve told the new head coach that he can hire his own defensive staff but that Koetter is the offensive coordinator and he will be working with our quarterback that was drafted first overall. Kinda like when Dungy got to Indy and he was told to just let Tom Moore and Peyton Manning do their thing. Or from the opposite, Gruden and Kiffin. Hindsight huh?

  20. Evolvingbucfan Says:

I truly feel we are owed apologies from the Coaches on down from every position, to the fans for what they have been showing us every week and it’s been getting worse. We deserve better than this!!! They deserve better than this, for themselves as players and men, they have been giving up on their coaches, team mates, and fans!!! and i find it disgusting personally.

I am tired of being disappointed and embarrassed as a fan. Getting beat by a better team i can handle but laying down blatantly is sickening.

I feel that Jameis has put all this pressure on himself for this year with all the talk and hype and he and this team aren’t equipped to handle pressure of any kind.

Truly sad days to be a Bucs fan, again.

  21. Broy34WantsGruden+Jameis Says:

Busman you could stop with the caps at any time. All you do is spew negativity and do so loudly. I stopped reading your comments after the second one. Newbie comes to the site guns blazing and just types caps all the time while complaining

  22. Broy34WantsGruden+Jameis Says:

And guys – koetter is gone. He will not “turn this around” I’m expecting maybe one win the rest of the year. Koetter will go at best 4-12 and is toast. The coaches need someone to inspire belief and devotion. Period. If you don’t think the players will pay attention to someone like Gruden you’re crazy. That’s what this team needs. And Gruden would rip bakers AS* if he saw him taunting a kicker like that tub of lazy lard did in training camp. Baker is the worst player ever signed in free agency. I despise him and believe he’s the cancer of the locker room. Atleast Mccoy tries maxi pad. Build a dline build an o line and this team is fine. Everyone plays better with a good dline. The skill players are there. We need a coach a gm who while drafting ok has made massive mistakes. I’m saying it now and put it on the record. Bucs win the division next year

  23. Conte Piscateli Says:

I think Koetters only chance to stay is to start calling out the loafs on this roster. Benching and cutting the players that don’t want to win here. His only chance is if he can produce a team that will actually fight down the stretch for this team. I think if he can remove the problems regardless of draft positions and contacts and put a team that plays hard and be competitive maybe he can get another year. I feel like he has nothing to lose at this time, the best thing he can do for this team is to remove the problems. On a side note, I am not a fan of firing coaches every two years.

  24. Mike Johnson Says:

DN55..My guess is..you only get so many chances in the NFl. Especially at Koetters and Smitty’s age. They have both been in the NFL for a while. Smitty will probably take a nice little HS coaching job. maybe a Division 2 college school. Koetter could possibly get another shot at OC in the NFL. But I think his HC days are over at this level. NFL Raheem is still young and initially took a DB coaching job after Tampa. I think he get one more shot at being a HC in the NFL. Atlanta Owner Arthur Blanks decided to move on from Smitty and Koetter. And..we will too!

  25. crazy Says:

There’s not a single player on this team that doesn’t know how wrong and stupid it is to abandon his responsibility and not hustle to back up his teammates when he gets beaten on the play. They know what they’re doing wrong they just don’t care enough to fix it. All the coaching in the world can’t fix stupid. Only the stupid players can.

  26. FortMyersDave Says:

LargoBuc, I thought the Bucs thought SF was making a play for Koetter as he made their short list before they hired Coach Kelly, one of the few hires that worked out worse than the Buc hire right now….. Glazers were a bit late in pink slipping Lovie and it coincided with SF calling in candidates for an interview, perhaps it was the one nudge needed to off Lovie as that 4 game losing streak did not sit well to finish up 2015.
Broy34: 4-12 sounds about right for the 2017 Bucs, just enough wins to move Tampa back in the draft far enough to miss on an elite player ala Gaines Adams instead of Joe Thomas or Megatron a decade ago (thanks to Tampa beating Cleveland for win #4 and slipping from #2 to 4 in the draft order),…..
