Derrick Brooks Talks Defense, “Disappointment” Of Defensive Line & Defensive Coaching

November 9th, 2017

Iconic No. 55 speaks

Finally, iconic Derrick Brooks came out of wherever he’s been hiding and treated Buccaneers to fans to deep insightful breakdown of their beloved team.

Order was restored for a change yesterday as Brooks sat down with the dean of Tampa Bay sports radio, Steve Duemig of WDAE-AM.

Asked about the Bucs’ defense and who’s to blame, Brooks first said he would provide the “political answer,” which is everyone is at fault.

But then Brooks opened up passionately.

“In breaking it down, you gotta start up front, the defensive line, in terms of getting pressure to the quarterback, is a disappointment,” Brooks said. “For whatever reason, they’re not getting it done. You cannot sit up here eight weeks into the season and not have figured out a way to create pressure. If the four-man rush is not getting it, you start bringin’ other folks. You start risk-reward in terms of the blitzes and disguising, and exploiting match-ups.

“Every offensive line that we’ve played across the board, you can’t tell me man-for-man they were better than what we had put on the field. You just have to find a way to exploit it. Now how do you set up those exploitations when it gets to passing? You gotta stop the run. (laughs) You gotta stop the run. We’re losing the 1-on-1 tackling battles. Teams are scheming up our defensive backs to be 1-on-1 making the tackles. How you combat that? Somebody has to win the 1-on-1 to not allow them to be in that position — to assist them. When you’re cracking a safety and putting the corners on the edge to make the tackle, you gotta disguise some run blitz to take the options away from the offense, you know, switching those things up and being more consistent.”

Fantastic stuff from Brooks. And Joe’s going to dare to offer a translation of the Hall of Famer. Hey Mike Smith, the plan is broken. Fix it. At least change more up.  …Of course, Brooks also knows it’s a players league and no coach wins a 1-on-1 battle. That’s on the player.

“You can’t allow injuries to be an excuse,” Brooks said. “We just haven’t done a great job of figuring it out.”

Brooks also directly addressed those who are calling for defensive coordinator Mike Smith’s head. “I don’t think that’s going to happen,” he said.

    Derrick for GM!!!!

And I sure hope he’s wrong about Mike Smith sheesh…

  2. JonGruden Says:

Yeah bring 55 back as the GM and I’ll fix Jameis next season after we draft Bradley Chubb, Minkah Fitzpatrick, or Saquon Barkley.

  3. Not there yet Says:

Mike Smith is done!!! He’s been exposed as a fraud. that 5 game win streak was a mirage. When ex players come out like this and all of them talk about how bad the coaching is, think about what the players that have to execute it are saying. Don’t wait for the exit interviews at the end of the season to pack up your things

  4. tmaxcon Says:

great player but he has NO BUSINESS in a front office role…. for every elway their is far more Matt Millien’s.. Brooks would make Matt Millen look intelligent arena eague is not the NFL… Stop living in a past that was not that special. great defense on a bad team that had 1 great year. you can’t rewrite history because it feels good.

  5. BrianBucs Says:

Bucs may have the worst, least talented defensive line in the NFL. And That falls squarely on the GM. Overpaid, overhyped players that can’t get the job done. The next draft should be very interesting

  6. BlogTalkFootball Says:

I bet the Glazers love reading this blog and the responses of the “cans on here…lol.

  7. Gerald McRuud Says:

GM Brooks’ first move would be to cut Gerald McQuit on the spot.

This soff, flat D has QUIT in 2011, 2014, and 2016. Find the common denominator. Hint: it’s the guy who was GIFTED a leadership role in 2009 when #55 himself was cut one year too soon, leaving a leadership void that’s felt to this day (Mr Ayers isn’t good enough to BE THE MAN).

If this defense quit, it’s just playing follow the leader. #93 is the leader, and he quit on Sunday.

  8. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Maxi pad

    Are you questioning DBrooks intelligence???

    Karma is a bitch

  9. JonGruden Says:

    @tmaxcon

I think John Lynch is doing just fine in the GM role over in San Francisco. Brooks is respected throughout the league and knows how to build a team, specifically a defense.

  10. BlogTalkFootball Says:

    Fans… not cans

  11. Gerald McRuud Says:

11, 14, and 17 — whatever. #93 has made 10 million dollars in his last 12 games, in which he has 2 sacks.

  12. ruggyup Says:

Jmark, he’s not totally wrong about the DC but, the whole staff coaching process and priorities need a fresh look and example. Players need to belly up to the bar and perform up and over their abilities. Coaches should know if they are not and if that’s the case there should be no misunderstanding about, ‘if you don’t want to play we don’t want you’. And we will make that happen. No threats – promises.

  13. JonGruden Says:

    @GeraldMcruud

McCoy isn’t even the leader of the defense. That’s Kwon. The problem is that the man is only 22 or 23 and injured half the season.

  14. JonGruden Says:

Gerald McCoy is definitely one of the most talented players on the team. You can’t say that he is a quitter either. That man has played through injuries more than JJ Watt.

  15. Kobe Faker Says:

KOBE FAKER- NEXT HEAD COACH AND GM

“Dont throw away the last nasty Jason Licht Ale ”

Licht has been awfully quiet and has not vocally endorsed Koetter to the public

The Glazers ownership still likes Licht (symphany?) and his last draft (no-no on the FAs)

Licht has given koetter the offensive tools but koetter has not effectively used them to win…out

Licht knows Glazers want Gruden but Glazers wont make Gruden joint HC/GM. Gruden doesnt want a dominant GM so he accepts licht (symphany?)

licht will lose responsibilities as GM and Gruden will be in charge of the 53 man roster ala Lovie years. Gruden will have much input in the draft/Fas

  16. tmaxcon Says:

    jmark

how did the failed living in the past attempt with the worst coach in bucs history lovie smith work out. brooks was apart of an underachieving team that only got the job done ONCE… facts suck loser

    jon gruden

john lynch has NOT done dick yet nor has he won anything. he will fail.

  17. buckingdown Says:

Remember Veterans to boycott the NFL this week!!! Go America!! Stand up for the Flag!

  18. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Ruggyup

It will change with a new GM, coach and scouting dept

  19. Tom Says:

How about Sapp for DC or the very least DL coach?

  20. Tom Says:

OH I forgot A-Train RB coach?

  21. JonGruden Says:

    tmaxcon

Your opinions are a joke on this website. Everyone in the league believes that Lynch has crushed the offseason and trading deadline. The team had less talent than the Browns and will probably be in the division race by next season.

    Kobe Faker

    Good points.

  22. Not there yet Says:

    Hey tmaxcon

Get a clue!!!! Brooks is already in a front office role as team president for the storm! And has a role with the NFL as well and is probably the one who decided on the one game suspension of Mike Evans.

Before you insult the guy know that he is in the hall of fame for more than just his play on the field most of these guys in the hall have one thing in common besides talent, they are smart enough to translate what’s learned in the classroom to the field. Agreed by that logic Sapp is smarter than gmc in terms of football but I’d take that Bet any day.

  23. 813bucboi Says:

it may not happen mid season, but smitty and dirk are as good as gone on BLACK MONDAY…

brooks is right about everything else tho…GO BUCS!!!

  24. Kobe Faker Says:

“I was peeking thru the front window of Hooters and i saw…

Manboobs Jason Licht wearing a Hooters girl outfit smooching all over Jon Gruden…Licht wasnt wearing a bra”

    Kobe Faker

  25. tmaxcon Says:

storm is not the nfl. you fools living in the past are laughable. you are the same type that still live at home with mommy and tell your friends that mom and dad live with you.

  26. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Joe

some reason my posts arent posting..surely if maxipad can post I should be able to.

  27. Bucssuccs Says:

Mike Alstott for GM! Pays much more handsomely than coaching a high school football team

  28. tmaxcon Says:

none of that BS you spew matters on sunday… none of it. 55 deserves to be in the hall of fame for his play but the offield stuff is garbage. He does the right thing and helps people that is great but should not be special… everyone regardless if you are million dollar sports figure or poop scooper at gmc’s doll house you should do the right thing and help your neighbors and be active in the community…. i’d be more impressed with a mailman visiting an old lady in the hosptial that he has been delivering mail to for 20 years than some athlete with a pr staff and a camera crew.

bottom line bucs need proven football people to fix this disaster. not a first time gm who has proven NOTHING….. bucs have been gambling on I hope they turn out types for decades yet only 1 successful season in team history.

  29. Lord Cornelius Says:

“Every offensive line that we’ve played across the board, you can’t tell me man-for-man they were better than what we had put on the field”

It sure looks that way though. The D-line doesn’t win any battles against anyone in any game with any actual consistency. The Giants have a terrible O-line and we still had minimal pressure. I don’t care what the f*ck the scheme is those players should be blowing by those OTs and collapsing the pocket on the interior if they are better players. You don’t need a 20 page playbook on defensive line stunts to make a good pass rush lol. GMC’s quick first step is useless if he’s just being O’lay’d like a Bull fighter off to the side and away from the play; and it seems he’s never developed much of a counter to that.

In this freakshow of a season; there at least is one thing I believe i was right about in terms of a prediction: 2018 = rebuild the D-line. Hell we may need to just rebuild the defense and go to a 3-4 at this point just for the sake of change lol; although I’m unsure how Kwon/Lavonte/Beckwith fit into that. Spence would be better served as a 3-4 OLB/DE though; and those type of players seem a lot easier to find throughout a draft in terms of effective pass rushers vs a traditional 4-3 DE.

  30. 813bucboi Says:

since @realist is in hiding, I guess i’ll do the infamous repost:…LOL…

    OMG its another 813 repost:

YEAH…LIKE NOT BLITZING LVD & KWON MORE!!!!
YEAH…LIKE NOT SENDING A CB OR S BLITZ!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  31. Gerald McRuud Says:

The Storm were a joke a few years ago. They were in the Arena bowl last year.

The difference between Elway and Brooks is….what now?

Two of the best GMs in recent memory are Elway and Ozzie Newsome. HOF player, HOF GM. Brooks didn’t take on that role with the Storm so he could stay with the Storm forever. That’s a steppingstone, folks.

The Glazer-Brooks relationship can be exactly what we’ve seen with Bolen and Elway in Denver.

  32. Dooshlarue Says:

I have a ton of respect for Mr. Brooks, however, the talk of him being GM is ludicrous.
Defensive Coordinator……hell yeah, in a heartbeat!
I would be all over that.
Bring the fire back on D!

  33. Atrain4047 Says:

Tmax, Your facts about the defense not having only one great year or incorrect. That defense was top 10 for a decade so I would consider that to be great. They underachieved because of their incompetence on the offensive side of the ball due to dungy not holding them accountable

  34. Not there yet Says:

Be specific next time third grader! You said no business in a front office not NFL front office and he if and John Lynch are intelligent enough to continue supporting the league with game commentary and assisting the league with discipline decisions it means they are smart enough to do many jobs and immediately get the respect of the players.

No GM gets all the picks right which is why teams make trades so you don’t need to hit on them all you need is a good team around you and I think he’s smart enough to simply have a vision for what a football team should look like and execute it. Saying he has no business in a front office is an opinion. Saying he’s been successful in what he attempts to do in life career and family wise is fact for Lynch and Brooks. You are useless

  35. Bucsfan951 Says:

haha tmaxi and him trying to figure people out. Let me guess your current situation. Your cockiness sounds like you own your own business or you’re a manager. I’m gonna guess it’s a thoughtless job like sticker maker or t shirt printer. Something that doesn’t take much skill. I’m also going to guess you’re divorced (your still bitter about that) have two kids, pay or paid child support, lives in a double wide (not hating, I had to grow up in one) and you have 2 dogs. No girlfriend and haven’t had one in years. Please be honest and tell me I’ve hit on at least a couple of these. NOTHING ever positive comes out of your mouth. I mean, NOTHING!!!

  36. Lamarcus Says:

    49ers are 0 and 9. Lynch ain’t won nothing

  37. Lamarcus Says:

But I thot all this losing was on jw not hitting a deep ball??? Bucs fan we became a joke.

  38. JMarkBuc Says:

    Maxi

If DB isn’t “proven” football people, then I don’t know who is.

The only way to prove he can be a GM is to give him a shot. My money is on DB to succeed.

  39. tmaxcon Says:

    jmarkbuc

if DB is a guaranteed success why did they only win 2 playoff games in 6 years with potentially 3 hall of famers. great player that deserves respect but he does not get a free pass for the underachieving years either.

  40. 813bucboi Says:

    LC SAYS:

GMC’s quick first step is useless if he’s just being O’lay’d like a Bull fighter off to the side and away from the play; and it seems he’s never developed much of a counter to that.

    ^^BINGO^^

I wish hayes would tell him to use that quick first step to go right at the OG and hold the point of attack….enough of “shooting the gap”…it aint working….the rb runs right behind him every time which then allows the OG to get to the second level….

if all he wants to do is shoot the gap and rush the passer, line his a$$ up at DE…I don’t care if its a 34 or 43…let him rush the passer from the outside…GO BUCS!!!

  41. Costa Rica John Says:

We are a bad team that lacks effort. The only thing to look forward to now is next years draft.

  42. tmaxcon Says:

    951

nice job on the analysis. self employed, never been married it’s much more fun to nail ladies 10 years younger and swap them out as needed than live a boring white picket fence life with the same hag. i do also own screen printing company as a hobby so very good young man… I am retired software developer who has much higher standards and yes I am very cocky. it’s hard not to be cocky when you are always right… let’s see I have been right about everything from gmc to murphy to glennon to lovie to lvd to doug martin. it’s tough to be humble when you see things so much more clearly than the common man.

  43. Atrain4047 Says:

Tmax, incorrect again, they won more than 2 playoff games. secondly football is a team game and you need to play well in all phases to win championships consistently.

  44. 813bucboi Says:

    TAX

Elway couldn’t win the big one until he got a great defense and run game….shanahan saved elways career…he was on his way to being the next dan marino….just saying….GO BUCS!!!!

  45. jjuice 32 Says:

hey tmax, how’s the 1st time GM who’s proved nothing working out for the Lightning?

  46. tmaxcon Says:

    Atrain4047

read it again SIR!!!… they only won 2 playoff games during dungy’s 6 years…He only won 5 playoff games in his ENTIRE career… hardly a consistent winning pedigree… i get the love of the feel good stories and popularity trumping reality but let’s compare greatness would you rather have brady’s 5 rings or db 5 playoff victories and 1 ring. buc fan thinks good is great far to often. hell brady has more super bowl appearances than bucs have playoff wins for the entire franchise.

  47. tmaxcon Says:

    jjuice 32

apples and oranges two different sports in case you did not know that… lighting actually has an owner that cares. lightning does not have the losing culture led by cancer93 to contend with either

  48. BigHogHaynes Says:

TAKE A KNEE T-MAX…KEEP AMERICA FREE!!!! This Coaching Staff sucks ….yet you raved about them over LOVIE FAMILY & FRIENDS, the team is lost, the team has given up, regression from the start of the season, THIS IS WHST HAPPENS WHEN YOU LET A BACK-STABBER TAKE THE LEAD!! It’s about to get even worse on Sunday!!! TAKE A KNEE…KEEP ANERICA FREE!!! TAMPA LIKE HOUSTON …YOU HAVE A PROBLEM!!

  49. tmaxcon Says:

    BigHogHaynes

one thing consistent is the anti american racist little hog will chime in with his cowardly racist self. I’d like to see a veteran take a knee on your throat now that would be great family entertainment. It certaining be more exciting than buc football lately. you need help sir. i am an undisputed a-hole but you are a pathetic racist.

  50. jjuice 32 Says:

you are correct because yzerman (like brooks) would not put up with any cancers.

  51. Lamarcus Says:

The only players that should stay on defense next year is mcdonald, kwon, lvd, j evans, vh3 beckwith. All the rest should be packed out of Tampa. The whole freaking defense. Enough is enough. Get serious talent

  52. tmaxcon Says:

yzerman also comes from a winning organization with multiple championships at multiple levels. brooks does not come a winning organization. he comes from one of the most dysfunctional sports franchise the world has ever known… it not the same. bucs need proven experienced football people not ex coaches and ex players who do not have a proven winning history.

the question is do you want the bucs to end the curse once and for all and win consistently and become the next patriots or do you want to relive a failed past and rebuild every two years that is the choice. say no to reliving the failed past and yes to a bright future with multiple championships.

jameis will win a championship. those that have given up will be eating dung… similar to the dung gmc fanboys have been eating all year long while their girl quits on another set of coaches.

  53. JMarkBuc Says:

    Maxi

“Great player that deserves repect”. And yet you question his intelligence:
Brooks would make Matt Millen look intelligent

DB wasn’t the reason we lost playoff games, but he might have been a big reason we were in playoff games.

You insult Bucs fans everywhere by Running down arguably the best buccaneer ever. And an even better human being. You’re a piece of work.

  54. Brandon Says:

I think its definitely a combination of scheme and coaching. DB is absolutely right in his assessment. If the players we have aren’t able to execute the scheme efficiently, DC Smith has to adapt to something that fits our players abilities. The same thing can be said about our offense as well.

  55. JMarkBuc Says:

    Maxi

Who do you choose for GM? Head coach?

  56. Bird Says:

    Miss him

  57. Bucsfanman Says:

This is what I don’t get. Everybody everywhere knows and sees that there is a problem. Yet, nothing is done about it.
Obviously our d-line isn’t getting any more talent so……well, lets do something DIFFERENT!

@buckingdown- I’m a veteran (Semper Fi!) and football has always been a respite from my day to day. I don’t support kneeling, but I’ll be damned if I’m going to let anyone get in the way of my weekly flogging, er, I mean watching!!!
Veterans should boycott something more substantial. ONE % of Americans are veterans, yet, those who have served cannot get health care to cover issues from their service. Boycott kneeling?! Please! Boycott the people that throw their patriots in harms way but can’t take care of them when they return.

  58. derrickbrooksforGM Says:

@Jmarkbuc HELZ YEAH. THE GM SPEAKS! You think DB would know the right guys to get the job done better than Licht, uh YEAH!

  59. wewantgruden Says:

I should be getting paid for my entries for keeping it REAL.

+ the D on any NFL team feeds off of the success of the Offense.
+ The Bucs have a 3 and out offense.
+ The Bucs D automatically enters the field with the attitude of “here we go again”. It is demoralizing.
+ We have had a QB that cannot lead a team due to his inability to perform/think under pressure. He could not read a defense.

Let’s see how our Bucs do this weak since FItzpatrick has a full week under his belt with the first team.

  60. Kansas95Buc Says:

So am I the only one that noticed how passionate Brooks, Sapp and Rice are for this team? Why not bring them in the building and get some fire on this team. Sapp and Brooks were part of the great turn around for us. Bring them in, at this point what can it hurt. Its obvious they know what they are talking about

  61. tmaxcon Says:

    JMarkBuc

you are the ultimate fanboy who thinks with his heart versus raising your standards and using logic. you keep living in the basement which will continue to result with the bucs in the basement. don’t fear you still can relive the 02 team…

facts are the bucs organization is dysfunctional the bucs underachieved during that time frame and produced some of the most putrid offense units the league has ever witnessed. they need to appreciate the previous stars but move on and set a new course of winning…

  62. Lamarcus Says:

    Wewantedgruden

Ur giving Sega stats or ps4 madden stats?? We ain’t going nowhere with sorry defense even if jw hits 100 percent of his passes. It’s a fact that u hate. U swing the blame jameis way but any normal person knows defense is whack

  63. tmaxcon Says:

    Kansas95Buc

sapp needs to be on tv not bucs locker room. forget the past people move on.. new is exciting… do not be scared they can’t do any worse

  64. JMarkBuc Says:

    Maxi

I’m a 50 yr old man. I am not a fan boy of anything or anyone.

You seem to have all the answers so who do you choose for GM? HC?

Funny how you avoid answering pertinent questions. Not funny how you run down DB.

You got real answers? Or just your usual canned nonsensical remarks?

  65. wewantgruden Says:

    Lamarcus:

The only thing I “hate” is losing. We would never win with JameisNOT. I was at the game in NOLA and saw everything with my own two eyes. He stood at the end of the sidelines by himself….not even listening in on the offensive plays or supporting any of his teammates. His altercation with the DB began from that same area. He is an I guy, preacher boy, dumb as a bag of hammers backup QB. Name one other QB in the NFL who would have performed his same antics on the sideline…..NO ONE.

  66. Kansas95Buc Says:

    tmaxcon:

what im saying is that they help turn the team around before and these guys aren’t dumb, so why not bring them back to help us right the ship? Again these guys are HOF so they know what they’re talking about. why not let them have a position coach job, what is it gonna hurt? I agree we cant live in the past but by god the future stink right now

  67. tmaxcon Says:

    Kansas95Buc

bucs need aggressive forward thinking successful football people not popular local celebrities and has beens. sorry thinking backwards never works. i understand where you are coming from and I really get it but it never works. what the bucs have been doing for more than a decade plus has failed including attempts to relive the past with lovie. the glazers need to accept they have no football knowledge or intuition and bring in a proven president not someone the fans are getting excited about a person that makes a real change in the culture of a failed organization

i readily admit I am not so sure who is the best candidate for that job is that being said I damn sure know it’s not a has been like dungy or a first time gm like 55.

  68. Eric Says:

Just about everything 55 has done has been a great success. National Title, Super Bowl, His High School, charity, the storm.

Same with Chucky. Turned the raiders, Super bowl winner, number one announcer.

Id take my chances with those two.

    Winners.

At the very least it would not be boring.

  69. JMarkBuc Says:

You don’t know..but you do know

    Lmao

Tony Dungy and Rich McKay (Rich McKay for hiring Dungy) were the only people to ever make a change in the culture of this failing organization. No one before, no one since.

We have nothing more to lose with Derrick Brooks. Only upside.

  70. tmaxcon Says:

    Eric

those types of gambles on front office and coaches coupled with all the gambles on injury prone mentally weak players is exactly why the bucs have spent a better part of the decade in the basement. the goal is to win not provide feel good stories and fan favorites with income while the on field product is more embarrassing than B level porn flick.

  71. tmaxcon Says:

    JMarkBuc

getting through your thick skull fool….DUNGY AND MCKAY FAILED…… gruden had to come in and clean up the mess from the one dimensional incompetent fool. dungy did far more harm to the bucs than good. he wasted 99, 55 , 47 over being ignorant and stubborn. dungy is a hypocrite joke move on…

  72. tmaxcon Says:

dungy’s pathetic offenses could not even score on lovies horrendous buc defensives. the dude is a one dimensional nice guy and a complete embarrassment to the hall of fame.

2 playoff wins in 6 years is not turning it around… dungy the failure had a great defense handed to him and choked.

  73. JMarkBuc Says:

    Maxi
You don’t know any more than any other Buc Fan

All indications are you know much, much less than most.

You talk to hear yourself talk…lonely man

    Go Bucs!

  74. tmaxcon Says:

i know what the win loss record was and witness every single home game first hand under the failed dungy years… so yes I do know exactly what will happen when you repeat failed mistakes.

it’s ok to have a mancrush i get it but i usually try and pick winners not failures.

  75. Kansas95Buc Says:

    tmaxcon:

you don’t think Brooks would command respect? the man is in contact with some of our current players, hell even Sapp and Rice. our issue is that the defense is flat like a 2 year old soda. If you can think of someone better than these guys to get things turned around, please name them

  76. Lamarcus Says:

Gmc has chair or seat away from everyone yet he praised as dt god. What’s ur point? Blaiming a 23 yr old for a tampa team losing franchise is smart. Did u know tampa defies losing? We went 2 and 14 the yr we earned the number 1 pick. We matched that already. Ur hate is personAL not football related so u have no merit grow up

  77. DB55 Says:

Inwatched Remember the Titans last night and it reminded me of Jameis.

The the Replaacments came on and it reminded me of the Bucs.

  78. JMarkBuc Says:

    I witnessed the same..section 221

Back in the days when you and I and 65,000 others were in the stands as well.

    Obviously a complete failure.

This is a bidness, you ain’t to far gone to see that

  79. tmaxcon Says:

    Kansas95Buc

getting rid of cancer93 is the first step in fixing the defense heart issues and coming out flat. just like dungy gmc get’s that i go to church and smile nice guy free pass. No captain in team history has led and so many flat and uninspired performances.

the bucs NEED a president that has full authority and can make an example out of ANYONE in entire organization and at any time. the bucs leadership structure needs to put fear in some of the mentally weak losers that the free ride is over… Brooks is not the right guy for this job or situation.

  80. tmaxcon Says:

    JMarkBuc

1 ring with that defense is failure sir… raise your standards and never settle

  81. USFBUC Says:

@813 – I have commented several times about putting GMC at DE and it looked like the Bucs might actually try that. I think it might be a better position for him.

at the very least the Bucs should consider bringing DB in some role to develop him into a GM if he isn’t ready now. I would love to see some of our guys more involved. They should bring Sapp and Rice back to coach up the Dline, get DB involved with coaching the LBs, then promote Hayes to DC if he is ready and capable.

  82. destinjohnny Says:

    next GM!!!!!!

  83. JMarkBuc Says:

How many rings did Baltimore win, with their vaunted defense. ( the second was years later)

  84. Kansas95Buc Says:

    tmaxcon:

so why wouldn’t Brooks be the right man for the job? $50 says the players he’s in contact with have respect for him, which we need right now. Sapp would be a great dline coach, you say we need some nasty on the line which I agree with

  85. TampaTown Says:

Hey John Lynch is a GM so Derrick should be next. He’s already an executive. I bet he could change the culture of losing and loafing as well since he’s already been through it as a player. And he could bring in Tony Dungy as a consultant ala Tom Coughlin.

  86. Kansas95Buc Says:

    USFBUC:

You sir get what Im saying

  87. USFBUC Says:

Kansas – those guys were part of one of the all time greatest defenses so they can’t hurt and as former great players they would command the respect of the players on the team today. Maybe even get the young guys to learn from their mistakes. Not every player makes a good coach but having played the game at a high level is certainly a starting point.

  88. tmaxcon Says:

you people living in the past are so far beyond hope.

However, being the nice guy that I am I will have a shot and a lap dance for lunch today in honor of the low standard fans who want to recreate a failed past…

wow is it really that scary to try and win and move forward with new creative people. is it that much more comfortable to know you are going to fail again but its acceptable to lose because you associate the names with some delusional past.

move forward not back people. lots of good things out there. Only time to relive the past is when you are getting a lap dance from a hottie and pour some sugar on me starts blaring

  89. Eric Says:

Sign me up for the Dungy/Gruden years, please.

    Please, please please.

  90. Lakeland Says:

Derrick Brooks would be the Dumbest person in America, to accept a GM position with the Bucs. They have to pay twice as much as other team for free agents. The player they draft, hate being here. No sane successful Head Coach will come here. They can’t even get a top college coach to come to Tampa. All the Bucs can get for a Head Coach is the following.

An assistant coach that has been fired by his previous team

A former Head Coach who has been fired by his previous team

Promote someone from their current coaching staff

    A mediocre college coach

The Bucs GM and HC job are the worst jobs in the NFL

  91. tmaxcon Says:

    lakeland

The Bucs GM and HC job are the worst jobs in the NFL

yet some of these fools think that Harbaugh would consider a pay cut and huge step back prestige wise to come to tampa. a small market team with clueless owners very little big offield earning potential compared to his current situation… Hell the offensive / defensive coordinator’s job at the big schools are far more prestigious than working for the glazer clowns in any capacity. .

  92. tmaxcon Says:

it’s one thing to be optimistic but an angry realist sees more clearly every time. that is why i am always right.

  93. tnew Says:

I’ve been saying this for a while. Put Brooks in as the President of Football Operations, over everyone including the GM.

  94. USFBUC Says:

so Tmax you don’t think Sapp, Brooks, and Rice were some of the greatest at their positions? and that that bucs defense wasn’t one the best defenses ever?

and forget about the offense because those three guys weren’t part of the offense

  95. Lakeland Says:

    tmaxcon,

The Bucs are a Dysfunctional franchise

5 Head Coaches in 8 years

6 Offensive Coordinators in 8 years

4 Defensive Coordinators in 6 seasons

    It’s like a circus

Why would someone want to come here?

  96. MTM Says:

I’m a fan of DB the football player and he has some great analysis of the defense woes. I have to say that I’m disappointed in his assessment of Winston or lack of. I think he over sold Winston to Lovie, Licht and the Glazers. IMO.

  97. Lakeland Says:

    The Pittsburgh Steelers

3 Head Coaches in 47 years

    Tampa Bay Bucs

3 Head Coaches in 5 years

  98. Bucsfanman Says:

Wow, what despair! You guys are driving me to drink…..heavily! Good points though. We are NOT a good franchise. What else is there to say?!

  99. Reach87 Says:

Tmax you are a moronic blowhard who rarely right. You have zero demonstrated football knowledge and no concept of leadership when it comes to team dynamics (peewee to the NFL). Not to be totally negative like you, I will offer that you are consistently moronic. Congratulations.

In all different sports, past star athletes who tried to be coaches or general managers have been the worst decisions ever made by the franchise/clubs

The track record and success rate is absolutely dismal in all different sports

  101. tmaxcon Says:

    USFBUC

yes i do think they were but there time is past. football is NOT the same sport it was when they played. those players don’t respect themselves much less anyone else. look at the way they quit and laydown… first time sapp cursed and grabbed gmc he’d be in glazers office crying. this franchise issues are bigger than sapp, brooks or dungy. This franchise needs a complete do over.

  102. tmaxcon Says:

    Reach87

feel better… lol i am always right and always will be… stop settling

  103. tmaxcon Says:

IT’S NOT NEGATIVITY IF IT IS REALITY!!!!! Write that down fake87

  105. tmaxcon Says:

raise it up early brother… i am enroute to a gentlemen’s club for the prime rib.

  106. Bucsfanman Says:

“Prime rib” huh?! Well, have one for me will ya?! Later T!

  107. Conte Piscateli Says:

Just for fun, if we do get a new head coach next year how about one to satisfy everyone. A forward thinking coach from a week coached team, who happens to have a name from the Glory days. Lane Kiffen?

  108. Mike Johnson Says:

Man..just sittin here thinkin about Brooks, Sapp, Lynch and that Defense we had..sends shivers up the ole spine!! Offenses you say, But they hit so GD hard!! YEAH..they did!! Noe QB’s come up to our line, laugh, look at the coverage and waltz right thru threw what we got. These Be..sad days indeed.

  109. Kansas95Buc Says:

OK so now that we know Tampa is a undesirable place to coach, who should we bring in? #MillionDollarQuestion

  110. Bucsfanman Says:

@Mike Johnson- I feel ya man. It used to be intimidating coming here to face this D. Nope, now teams come here and fix their offensive woes. We’ll even give you a 10 yard cushion before we say ‘hello’!

  111. USFBUC Says:

Tmax that cursing and slapping of some of these players is exactly what we need

  112. 99.97.92.55.47.40.22.20.7 Says:

We have the longest string of draft busts in history. I can’t even name three decent first or second rounders on our roster. O-line consistently worst in nfl. GM needs to be evaluated. 55 is a great man and linebacker but not a wheeler dealer. Linebacker.

All this said, this all looks a lot different with a couple spins of the laces:
We miss out on chance to pummel Dolphins in opener and start with 2 Wins
Morale fades with loss of bye
    Kicker blows 2? games
Literally half of our good players are injured by week 3
Playing with a patchwork team of spares
Struggling qb gets hurt and take offense down with him
Defense is on field 80% of game as result
Struggling qb is only leader on team and isn’t taken seriously because he struggles
    Morale disintegrates
Veteran free agents tear team apart

Spin of the laces boys in Early September

    Enter Fitz
May throw 6 TDs or 6 picks. Or both. But I feel better with him in there than I have since week 3

  113. I'm a Tandyman Bucs Fan Says:

Tmaxcon… Looks like you have everyone on this message board pissed off at you. Better save the bone from that Prime Rib when you leave that Gentlemen’s Club and tie it around your neck so your Dog will play with you. Gentlemen Clubs are for losers like you and Lamar that are searching!!!!

  114. Joe Says:

We have the longest string of draft busts in history. I can’t even name three decent first or second rounders on our roster.

Might need to either put the bottle down or look at a current roster

  115. Lakeland Says:

The Bucs need stability, they need to stick with Dirk Koetter.

  116. Lakeland Says:

If they fire Koetter and hire another Head Coach. That would be 4 Head Coaches in 6 years. When they hired Dirk Koetter, he was the 3rd Head Coach in 4 years. Somewhere they has to draw a line, and stick with a Head Coach.

  117. 99.97.92.55.47.40.22.20.7 Says:

    1. Lavonte
    2. M Evans
    3. Marpet

Jameis is a question mark until he can consistently get first downs, and or touchdowns (let’s start with first downs)

    J Evans maybe?
OJ, maybe, but a wasted pick for a team trying to make the playoffs this year
    Hargreaves?
    Spence?
    Aguayo?
ASJ – turns out he is alright
    Banks???
    Barron?
    Dmart?
    Clayborn
    Bowers

  118. Kansas95Buc Says:

Reading these comments, you can tell who objectively watch our games

  119. TampaTown Says:

@Lakeland: Really get your frustration. I can’t believe we’re back here again. Sigh. What’s up with all the screen names? Did I miss a meeting?

  120. Jim Says:

+1 Double Nickle just nailed everything I was thinking, but said it far more intelligently and deep than I could.

  121. SOEbuc Says:

Brooks is a very smart man that’s always hanging around OBP. Hall of Famer and a captain on one of the best defenses ever to have played. Be sweet to bring him into be DC. Simeon still likes the Bucs. Bring him into be d-line coach. Then Gruden as has head coach. Holly sh!t. This is 2002!!! GO BUCS!!!

  122. Mike Johnson Says:

Say lLkeland..might as well fire Koetter. Why Not? What..have we got to lose? More games? Koetter is not HC material in the NFl. HE’s a one coach trick. Meaning..he does better at one job..Offensive Coordinator. You know, Kinda like that guy at work who does Outstanding at one thing, one job. Now start giving him 2 or 3 jobs/task? And he folds. Some people simply are not good at multi-tasking. Koetter is probably one of them.
