69 Percent Completion Rate

November 5th, 2017

Mike Smith is delivering fans an unwanted Lovie flashback.

Halfway through the 2017 season, your Bucs pass defense has now regressed to where it was during the Lovie Smith era.

Consider that entering today’s slate of NFL games, only two starting QBs were completing passes at a 70 percent clip, Josh McCown and Tom Brady.

But when quarterbacks play the Bucs, they have a great day, like Drew Brees did today when he completed 22-of-27 passes for 263 yards and two touchdowns.

Opposing QBs are connecting on 69 percent of their passes against Tampa Bay this season. And the Bucs, despite a sack today by Robert Ayers, are last in the NFL in that department by an unhealthy margin.

Lovie’s teams were last in the NFL two years ago, when QBs completed 70 percent of their passes. In 2014, the Bucs also were last, allowing 68.7 percent of passes to connect. (And people wonder why defensive mastermind Lovie was fired?)

At least Lovie had more of a philosophy that called for a higher completion rate in exchange for tightening up big time on big plays. Mike Smith simply has no answers and seemingly no effective plan.

Lovie didn’t have answers either, except when he was questioned by local reporters about that high completion rate and replied that it wasn’t relevant.

Dark, dark times for Bucs fans.

  3. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Licht has destroyed this team in 4 years and it seems the players dont listen to smith

  4. Shane Says:

You got the wrong guys in Smith & Koetter. Get the right coach.

  5. HarlemBuc Says:

This team is completely in the garbage… as my lady would say “BASURA”!!! This whole thing is off the rails… the defense sucks, the offense is a disaster the freaking coaches look clueless!!!
Joe’s nobody else is going to say it so leave it to me… I never thought I’d ever freaking say this but Skip “Talks out His A$$” Bayless was right with his diagnosis this summer… this coaching staff is in over its head and the whole damn thing needs to be reset a freaking gain!! What the F bro.:. We need an intervention and an injection of some real freaking football around this muthaf~€€a asap
We as fans don’t need to be freaking patient anymore… trade Gerald soft A$$ while he’s got value and send Lavonte right along with him! That should get us two second rounders… get some actual coaches who demand respect because of their accomplishments not potential… that disqualifies Chuckies a$$… anyway new gym because you can’t keep anything from the regime now

  6. Chris in WA Says:

We should have given Raheem Morris one more year with different coordinators.

  7. HarlemBuc Says:

This is bulls()it… there’s no more time to be patient and there’s nothing to be saved learned or gained from this season unless we reboot the franchise like a muthaf_ckin Spider-Man movie or some s()it!!! We got a young core and they need to be led correctly and developed not whatever the hell we just watched and have been watching

  8. JonBuc Says:

Lovie laughs at the Yucs while continuing to cash their checks.

  9. JimmyJack Says:

Lovie Smith……..We would actually be better off. No way Kwon would be downing backwards under Lovie.

We were bad on gamday with Lovie but we weren’t quitting and when he was here this team was being built better……..This two idiots spent the brunt of their resources and money to build in the passing game which was already our only strength……a passing game that is now getting worse.

When Lovie was here we were building on the lines which was proper. They fired Lovie for Dirks playbook but they forgot to realise a playbook is nothing more then a fire starter if you don’t know how to gameplan…..not to mention build a freaking team properly.

  10. DBS Says:

Who is going to get the right people in here? The same fools that keep making the wrong hires to begin with? The Bucs are the Bucs. And they will be.

  11. JimmyJack Says:

Chris Rajeev Morris was in a losing situation…..his boss didn’t know how to build a team just like this idiot who builds weapons for Winston while we already had enough weapons to win in this league

  12. dmatt Says:

We had a chance to get Dwight Freeney but is dumbfound when opportunities presents itself. Koetter we’ll play with the players we have.

  13. Season Is Over Says:

You know you suck when you are mentioned with Lovie Smith. Even McCown is laughing at the Bucs when he throws another td to Jenkins.

  14. darin Says:

Theyve gota shell out the big bucks to get a great coach. If its another offensive coach I hope to goodness they also hire an aggressive D coordinator, ala schwartz. Even the aints are finally playing good d, with far less talent than the bucs. How many times did we see their safety all over our qb today? Too many. We never get our safety to the qb, ours sit back n watch the plays. Short, long, intermediate catches…they watch em all. The defense is and was a mess. The offense has caught up. Unprepared and soft. Hire a man. One that actually doesnt need a stick. One that brings it with just his helmet and pads. We dont need the talk, we need the walk. Asap!! Not in 2 months, now!

  15. Defense Rules Says:

@DB55 … “There’s only 1 constant. One 1.” Mostly true DB, mostly … on defense. Lovie’s 2014 defense had GMC, David, McDonald & Tandy who are still with the Bucs today and that was about it. The rest of the defense has turned over … and over and over again. This is now the 4th year (2014 on) & we’ve had 3 DC’s and 2 very different defensive philosophies. Excellent defenses like the the Vikings & Chiefs don’t go through that much turmoil. Both have the same HC & the same DC they had in 2014. They draft quality players, develop them, and re-sign them if they produce. If not, draft someone else. Our draft selections on defense starting in 2014 have been OK (at best) but focusing on offense as we have has left us with ‘meh’ talent in too many defensive positions. Our FA signings (Ghost Johnson, Swaggy Baker, et al) have largely not worked out all that well for us, although a couple have done quite well. And folks wonder why we have leadership & communication issues? Really?

  16. JimmyJack Says:

Lovie Smith kinda is part of the problem here……..That whole fiasco was pretty bush. They bring the guy in here to run the football operation. That’s a lot of responsibility.

Just think about the fact that they fired the guy for a freaking playbook. Of course I don’t know what was going through the Glazers minds but there’s been a lot of speculation that he was fired so they could retain Dirk.

That’s a bull reason to fire somebody. For a freAking playbook……These Glazers have backed themselves into a corner here.

As much time as they gave Mark Dominick they fire Lovie for a playbook. There is no way that sits well with people around the league.

We got our #1 QB and we got a dumb ole playbook…….They might not be able to fire their way out of this one. There may not be any quality coaches knocking on the door at One Buc Place.

  17. SmokeymountainBucfan Says:

~Make The Buccaneers Great Again~ Start by apologizing to Tony Dungy for being not so great at knowing how to properly tell a man that you are gonna let him go, and beg him to come back. I personally believe wether he’s coach or Gm he’d be able to turn this around quickly

  18. Warrenfb12 Says:

Gonna hate watching Josh McCown shred the Bucs

  19. JimmyJack Says:

The Saints played kind of lousy today…..They made quite a few mistakes.

Yes people, we are that bad. This franchise runs its team at a lower level then the rest of the league.

  21. D-Romw Says:

Defensive masterminds, offensive gurus, the common denominator is Jason Licht.

  22. cmurda Says:

I knew the defense would stink this year. Mike Smith is a garbage coach but I didn’t expect our offense to stink. I really liked Koetter but I just don’t see how he can survive the year after losing all control of his football team. I hate to start all over with the coaching carousel. It hasn’t worked for us in the last 10 years but Dirk is really giving the Glazers no choice. 9 points combined in the 1st half of our last 4 games. That can’t be overlooked. Every game we are having to hope for a miracle comeback. If our team is not prepared then it’s 1 of 2 things or both. 1) The coaching staff does not have this team prepared. 2) The players are not playing for their coaching staff. Either one results in the coach getting canned and after seeing our 5th loss in a row, most of which we weren’t even in the games, I think it’s time to blow up the coaching staff yet again.

  23. D-Rome Says:

Defensive masterminds, offensive gurus, the common denominator is Jason Licht.

  24. Pawel Says:

Playing in Tampa is like being on vacation, I see no motivation in these players, how do you motivate them, starts with the coaching and game plans.

  25. uckinator Says:

    No hope…Only pain !

  26. Sydney Says:

IT MUST REALLY SUCK TO RUN A WHOLE WEBSITE BASED AROUND AN UNWATCHABLE, AND ONCE AGAIN, IRRELEVANT TEAM.

EVERY STORY HERE IS JUST BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, SOME OLD THING FOR MOST OF THE LAST TEN YEARS.

  27. Bucnjim Says:

Not sure about the whole Lovie Smith argument he has only had limited success as a HC and can’t even get a college team competitive. The one constant has been the inability to keep this team from quiting! The NFL is an extremely intense job. To be honest you have to be half crazy and love what you do more than anything. Two words come to mind actually three with this team: Finesse, soft, money!

  28. 813bucboi Says:

    OH no!!!…that can’t be…a defense worse than lovies….NO!!!

According to @realist and @LC this defense is better…it has improved….smitty has us going in the right direction….dirk has this locker room under control….we are really close….we’re not that far off…this defense will turn the corner….BS….you two booty partners look dumber each week dirk sh!ts on himself….GO BUCS!!!

  29. AlteredEgo Says:

    JimmyYack….Lovie was a mistake hire….end of stry

  30. JimmyJack Says:

Yeah curmda…….I believe you are right.

All that creates a heck of a possible ordeal though because what if nobody wants to coach this team?

Then we have to go with another rookie coach and cross our fingers. The effects caused from all of this are devasting when you play devils advocate.

We are back to square one as fans which is blind hope and this franchise will be back to square one again………How long did it take this franchise to build its first contender?

  31. 813bucboi Says:

    @realist
    @LC

    Don’t hide!!!!….GO BUCS!!!

  32. Bucnjim Says:

Rome this has been going on way longer then that! We have been lacking physical and mental toughness here for 10 years or more.

  33. 813bucboi Says:

    Ego

Dirk is proving to be even worse….GO BUCS!!!

  34. JimmyJack Says:

Altered ego……The point is that Lovie was fired for a stupid playbook.

It pissed a lot of people off. I think holding a grudge is for women but not everybody does……..There is a likely chance no decent football coach wants to work for this team…………..So you tell me, how has this team done when hiring rookie HCs?

  35. DB55 Says:

    Def

Only one constant since Raheem, Greg, Lovie and Mike. One 1.

  36. rrsrq Says:

Watching other teams play football, what a treat and you just wonder, what the hell is going on in Tampa all these years

  37. AlteredEgo Says:

Jimmy…3 years….and I saw everyone of them….no FA….hard core brutal defensive football….our guys are tougher than yours….not this silly sheet the NFL has become…

  38. Season Is Over Says:

The only thing funnier than a Mike Smith defense is the look on Deshaun Jackson’s face during America’s Present Laughingstock, Losing, Captain of Immaturity, Only Seen in Local Markets, Backed into Pro Bowler Because Three Others Backed Out and Never Returned, Benched for Ineptness, Mr. Magoo aka Jameis Winston’s eat a W pregame speech.

  39. JimmyJack Says:

Yeah yeah season is over………why aren’t you listen to the broadcasters once in a while. You might learn something.

    And gene deckerhoff doesn’t count.

  40. Lakeland Says:

    Dear Jason:

We appreciate all of your hard work and effort
We thank you for four wonderful years of dedicated service
But we have decided to move forward in a different direction
We will not be picking up the 5th year option on your contract
    Thanks for everything

    Sincerely Yours
    Tampa Bay Buccaneers

  41. JimmyJack Says:

I can’t wait for Winston to get shut down for the year. Then who y’all gonna blame?

I know the QB position is the most important and Winston is playing bad but did you ever see what happens when some of the good teams get a bad day from their QB?

  42. Chucklehead Says:

Jameis has been playing hurt for a while now. You can tell hes struggling and you can blame a lot of the offensive woes on his shoulder.

That being said, I watched a defense throw in the towel today. The Saints played a good game, but they by far did not play a great game.

Im just absolutely bewildered as to how a team can be so uncompetitive. We have more talent than a lot of the teams that can go out there and stay in games and ebery now and them, they can win a close one.

If you took away all the points we have gotten in garbage time the last 5 weeks, it would look so much worse. I hate living like this. Why does it have to be such a Bucs life?

  43. loggedontosay Says:

Lovie was replaced with Lovie. Tony Romo said that the Bucs would not outplay the Patriot because Dirk Koetter’s offense was just like Joe Gibbs offense. The offensive line is not good. Too many plays downfield. The running game is very bad. I blame Jameis especially for not having time to set his feet and throw the ball which results in him missing Deshawn Jackson and Mike Evens on deep throws.

  44. HooliganSixx Says:

    Clean House.

trade GMC and all dead weight.

    Hire as follows:

    1. NEW GM: Nick Caserio (currently NE Player Personnel Director)
    2. NEW HC: Matt Patricia (Patriots defensive coordinator)
    3. NEW DC: Adam Zimmer (Vikings linebackers coach)
    4. NEW OC: Alex Van Pelt (Packers QB coach)

  45. Roy T. Buford Says:

Here’s the cycle. New coach, new GM. Give us three years. One year out it really seems like two year away. On that year, it’s failure. Start over. New coach, new GM. Give us three years. One year out it really seems like two year away. On that year, it’s failure. Start over. This was supposed to be the year they got back into post season. Now we don’t see even three years…we see start over…again.

  46. JimmyJack Says:

I think there’s a chance they stay with Licht and give him new blood to work with.

  47. Roy T. Buford Says:

These guys were close to something special last year. What happened? They brought in a couple of primadonnas who thought they are bigger than the team, and split the locker room…and the coaches can’t react because half the players don’t listen and the other half doesn’t want to speak out with guys like Ward, Djax, Baker ready to pounce. They are thinking Jameis is more talk than do, and the proof is the Bucs handed him one of the best receivers in the NFL and he can’t hit him…or anybody else. And Mike Evans whole life is a train wreck. The guy is so stupid, and a poor leader. So, loss of condidence in the coaches, loss of confidence in their team leaders, loss of confidence in themselves. Gotta blow it up and start over.

  48. JimmyJack Says:

But I don’t see any chance for Dirk. This team just looks too bad too many times. There is no reason for a pro team to be unable to compete.

It’s not like we are playing Against Bill Walsh and Vince Lombardi type teams every week. Not even close.

We are so bad we can’t even compete with average to below avenge teams anymore.

  49. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I get a real kick out of posters who blame one player for all the woes of the Bucs……what a total joke.
One player missed all those tackles
    One player incompleted passes
    One player fumbled
One player missed a block leading to a blocked punt
One player got stopped behind the line of scrimmage
One player missed a block causing Jameis to be hit
and One player got into all the coaches heads and forced them to coach poorly.

Yes…..one player…..one player at a time added up to be pretty much a whole team of them.

  50. JimmyJack Says:

Roy maybe they weren’t as close as we thought they were.

They had two games last year to get over the hump and they got physically dominated in Dallas and they played with little effort against the Saints(remind you of anything?)………. we choked against Oak………we got blown out against Arizona……we’re we really all that good last year?

Quite a few of our wins were very very ugly………IMO. We never really proved much Aust year except for a nine win record………But at the end of the day when we got into a big game we folded.

  51. DoNUTS Says:

I have heard the name Patricia a few times. Keep in mind he had HC offers the past 2 years and made no move. Why? If you are paying attention, you know that Brady (2 years left) and Belicheck are out after next year and Matt will be taking over the reigns from there. Why would he want to come here anyway?

  52. JimmyJack Says:

We also had a losing record at home(I rounded) last year…….Good teams don’t get owned in their own house.

Give me a friggen break with that Rams game last year. We weren’t a good team last year.

  53. 813bucboi Says:

Lovie was canned because he was a defensive coach who’s defense sucked….some suggest he lost control of the locker room although he improved from 2wins to 6….

Dirk was hired to get Winston to the next level….he’s an alleged offensive guru….he’s failing and the team has regressed….he has lost control of the locker room….it’s time to show him the door and a good tackle and bait shop….bye bye dirk….and take @LC &@realist with you….good riddance!!!…GO BUCS!!!

  54. Fire Goodell Says:

Dirk still has more wins than Lovie in his two years, the same wins as Greg Schiano in two years and needs two more wins to match Raheem’s record in two years. Not so sure about that one though.

  55. BuccaneEric75 Says:

It goes back to Lovie. He is the reason we’re in this mess right now. If he didn’t hire Koetter we wouldn’t have Mike Smith. He also hired Licht. Domino effect, Butterfly effect, whatever you want to call it, the Glazers, due to Lovie, are ultimately responsible for our current teams woes. We could be looking at Head Coach Jeff Tedfords team right now if he was healthy or didn’t quit on us, however it went down. We’re a train wreck from top to bottom.

  56. Lakeland Says:

Where are all of the Licht lovers, who has been dissing me for months?

  57. 813bucboi Says:

    People blaming lovie….no blame dirk….

    Btw…freeny has 3 sacks in 2 games…GO BUCS!!!!

  58. JimmyJack Says:

813……. That’s the problem. You don’t hire a dam head coach because of who your QB is. Your HC is there for the whole team not one dang player.

They have cottoned the coaches around Winston and it’s been a freaking disaster. The disgusting thing about it is they didn’t want to change offensive systems yet this offense doesn’t look anything like the offense we saw in 2015. It seems like no we have an offensive team that was built to do something completely different then what they are doing.

The exact reason they didn’t want to let Dirk go is the same thing that hindering the offense……..On top of it we now have a HC who barely knows his own team(offense or Defense or ST), a team that appears to have given up caring

  59. Kobe Faker Says:

How to tell if a HC is any good if from the coaches he hires

Thats why the alltime great has a coaching tree when his past hires also gaines success

Kobe Faker was adamant for 2 years the stupidity of Koetter not hiring a offensive coord was a ultimite failure.

Jameis a young, immature, emotional personalitity. He needs 24/7 attension, teaching…

Not a lovie fan but in jameis rookie year, jameis WAS ALWAYS BESIDE KOETTER(OC) HIP….ALWAYS….when he went to the side line…jameis headed straight to Koetter….

I never ever seen jameis with wr/oc imposter monken EVER!

Lovie would never allowed that iimmature finger puzzy move today and the head butting last year

Give the playcalling to who??? Lol! Koetter didnt hire anyone who can!!!!!!

  60. Eric Says:

The Lovie shots ring pretty hollow now.

You notice the Saints did not fire their super bowl winning coach. although I am sure the vultures would have had Sean coached the bucs and struggled for a few seasons. Better players and Sean can coach again.

A really good head coach in the NFL is very hard to find. Who is realistically out there that could do the job?

The whole thing is super depressing.

  61. 813bucboi Says:

    Firegoddell

Dirk is doing less with more….he’s proving to be the worse BUCS HC in history….he’s lost and is in over his head….GO BUCS!!!

  62. JimmyJack Says:

    Lakeland……I’ll still support Licht.

I’m not going to blame Licht just cause it’s popular. For all I know it was the Glazers who got their panties in a bunch when Dirk became a hot commodity. Maybe they told him to work with Dirk and maybe Licht was against this Weapons for Winston nonsense…….It’s hard to say what happens behind closed doors. If they can Licht I guess that means he was behind a lot of this. We shall see

  63. JimmyJack Says:

Good point Kobe Faker…..I did only see the first episode of that Hard Knocks show but I do remember them showing the RBS coach and I thought to myself that he sounded like a tool bag.

Hard to judge somebody’s ability from one sound byte but maybe there is a coaching reason behind this awful run attack……Maybe that kid we drafted should keep working he just may find success elsewhere for unknown reasons.

I don’t believe in “Paper” Champions. But I will make a realistic prediction, no California Dreaming or wishful thinking here. But I honesty believe that we will finish the season at 7-9. I think we will we will go 2-4 in the NFC South and 5-5 against the outside teams. I don’t base my prediction on our roster or our improvements or upgrades alone. I base my predictions on the opposition roster, strengths, upgrades also. I know that we have upgraded our offense, but all 3 of our rivals in the NFC South has an explosive offense, capable of scoring 500 points. I don’t believe our defense can stop these teams, I don’t believe we’re that good on defense. I don’t believe our offensive line will give our QB time to go through his reads and utilize our weapons. And I still believe that Jameis is the 4th best QB in the NFC South. And I believe that we are the 4th best team in the NFC South. This is not hating, nor is this negative thinking, this is my opinion as I see it. And only time will tell, if i’m wrong, then i’m wrong. But I will analyze it as I see it, and this is the way I see it.

  65. Kobe Faker Says:

Dirk was not a hot conmodity

This was strictly a power move from licht to remove lovie and get full control

No Head coach would come in with licht…because they cant trust him

You think gruden would come here if licht stayed ad GM

  66. JimmyJack Says:

Kobe my point is that you can’t say that with absolute certainty. Licht works for the Glazers not the other way around.

I’m not saying how it happened I’m just saying that it’s not a fact. Maybe it was reported that way(not speculated) and I just missed it.

  67. Kobe Faker Says:

    Lake

The more years i watch football,

With the amount of money these guys make, social media…

The head coach now days HAVE TO BE DISCIPLINARIANS.

You cant be buddies with players

  68. JimmyJack Says:

But Kobe I do remember hearing rumblings(not fact) that Dirk was being considered as HC material by other teams.

He was out of contract and the Bucs didn’t want to lose him and start over with a third OC in as many years….most important to keep continuity with Winston. This was opinion reported on the Local Sports Radio. Those guys usually know things we don’t. Joe too

  69. Kobe Faker Says:

Lovie brought in licht to tampa

    JJ

I dont care about lovie and the past

The future decision is very tough for the glazers

Not a huge list of gm/hc out there

  70. Lakeland Says:

Dirk Koetter was the wrong OC/HC for Jameis Winston

  71. JimmyJack Says:

I remember them saying the same thing about Raheem Morris. Denver wanted to give him a better gig and the Glazers were scared to lose him so they upped the ante just to keep him.

  72. JimmyJack Says:

That’s why I’m not so quick to jump on Licht for the Dirk hire. It was the same reaction that was had with Raheem………Licht was not here then.

Maybe just a coindence. But I’m not buying it.

  73. MadMax Says:

FAKE PLAYERS….TAKING THE MONEY AND RUNNING WITH IT….PAID ALREADY, SO WHO CARES ABOUT THE RESULTS!!!!!!!!!!!! BUNCH OF TURF TREADING JOKERS (MOST OF THEM)

  74. Chris Says:

Jameis is a laughingstock on twitter, his teammates have to be seeing this……beginning of the end. We will suck for another 5 years unless someone like Harbaugh comes in and takes over.

  75. SmokeymountainBucfan Says:

I’m so sick of the same ol bulls*it every other year… it’s never gonna change until they sell the team… unfortunately I don’t see them selling the team until after the Super Bowl coming up in tampa in a few years… actually I don’t blame them, make bank and cash out!!! NEVER SHOULD OF FIRED DUNGY! I know we won a Super Bowl but I believe we would of had 2 or 3 with Coach Tony Dungy

You may also add any visiting NFL team

  79. Mike Johnson Says:

  80. Lakeland Says:
