Folk Talks About What Went Through His Head

Talks buildup to winning kick

For a while today, veteran kicker Nick Folk was the goat of all goats — two missed field goals and flubbed extra point in a tight game.

Then, with the Bucs at the Giants’ 35 yard line, Folk ran onto the field for another kick on 4th-and-2. He was quickly called off the turf at the Stadium on Dale Mabry Highway.

The Bucs were going for it trailing by one point with 10 minutes remaining in the game. Joe watched Folk walk over to the team Gatorade cooler, open one up and take a chug. Then it was back to the sideline kicking net for practice.

About nine minutes later, winning head coach Dirk Koetter was taking back-to-back knees to set up a game-winning 35-yard field goal try for Folk.

So what was going through Folk’s head waiting to win the game as the Bucs killed the clock?

“Nothing,” Folk said at his locker. Nothing at all.

Folk wasn’t smiling talking to media, just talking about how he’s supremely confident and each kick is just one kick. On to the next one. Folk said he got nothing but love from teammates and the Bucs are a great bunch of guys and he said he loves every one of them.

Folk has the correct, winning mentality. But that’s just talk. Folk made the damn kick. If he missed, well, he’d probably have a new team on Tuesday.

We need a freaking kicker asap!!

  3. cmurda Says:

We have to stay with Folk at this point. Not because he made that kick….barely but because if we bring somebody else in they will suck at least as much.

This seems a lot like the Panthers game last year where Aguayo only delayed the inevitable. However, I can chock up a bad game as one bad game. You usually don’t fire a kicker for ONE bad game. That said, he won THIS one eventually but if he does this again in the near future, he can still get canned. John MacKay used to say “kickers are like grass; they are everywhere.” Not so sure that’s true anymore.

give him a pass for today it was just one game and came through when we needed him. he was pretty much perfect heading into today so let’s just put this one behind us and get ready for thursday

  6. BucTrooper Says:

He was a Folking disaster today.

  7. Dave Says:

He’ll be fine, One way or the other. If he misses some kicks that should be made next week, he’ll be cut. If it was not a short week, I would not be surprised if they brought another kicker in this week just to take a look.
Since it is a short week, I see that happening after the patriots game possibly, see how he does

  8. Jim Says:

Both teams missed kicks. He made the important one.

  9. JP4 Says:

Man! That is one ugly dude!

  10. LakeLand Says:

You don’t play WINLESS teams every week.

Apparently it wasn’t hair!!! This guy gave me fits today!!!!!!

  13. Greg J Says:

I was confident that he would make the game winner…dude is a vet and has been thru this forever. He is not a mentally fragile kid that went to a school 4 hours north of here.

  14. darin Says:

Had he missed it was ….get the folk outa here. He didnt. Thank god. Would have gone down as another one of those games where the bucs handed it away. Gota stick with him now. He had a bad game. If it turns into 2 games n 3 then u consider. Whew close call folk. Wheres all the negative nancys who were calling out the loss and another thursday, before this game? Now we have the worst defense in the league coming to town on a short week. The panthers of all teams hung 30 on em in NE. Go Bucs

  15. CroatiaBucs Says:

Stick with him, he was good up until this game, he’ll bounce back. And hit a game winner. We could do a lot worse. At least he can make one 40 yards beyond, unlike AguaLOL.

  16. Andrew Says:

Cmurda is right. We’re stuck with him for the time being. So, might as well send positive juju. Great job Folk and GO BUCS!!!

  17. Chucklehead Says:

After the 2 missed fgs and extra point with time on the clock I could not believe they decided to put it on Folk instead of taking a shot or 2 at the end zone. They had the field position and time. Even though it worked, Im still not sure it was the right call.

  18. Bucs78 Says:

We need a more dependable kicker, too many points squandered, who’s available for try outs?

  19. lambchop Says:

Can we draft Ricky Aguayo in the 2nd next year? Sorry, someone had to say it. LOL. Ricky did nail a 50+ yard kick though this past weekend.

  20. teacherman777 Says:

Matt Bryant is still one of the best in the league!!

    @joe

    who let Bryant get away?

  21. gilhealy Says:

Folk will be fine. Wet field had a lot to do with it. 49 and 46 yarders aren’t gimmies. He’s been good for a long time. He’ll do his job.
