“You Have To Give Jameis A Reason To Throw You The Ball”

October 24th, 2017

Sunday’s star talks development

Sunday was quite a look-at-me-NFL party for O.J. Howard, the rookie tight end the Bucs coveted more than Joe yearns for an RV rental excursion with a crew of Buccaneers cheerleaders.

Howard had five catches in five games before Sundays’ matchup versus the Bills. He left Buffalo with six more catches and two fresh touchdowns in his pocket.

It was about time.

Howard was/is supposed to be a matchup nightmare for defenses, especially with Cameron Brate, DeSean Jackson and Mike Evans on the field.

A very mature 22-year-old, Howard wasn’t pounding his chest on the Buccaneers Radio Network yesterday when talking about his game and adjustment to the Bucs.

I’m “polishing it up,” Howard said of his route running, and that’s led to America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, becoming a true believer in him.

“You have to give Jameis a reason to throw you the ball. You have to become open to start off,” Howard said. “Once Jameis sees that he can trust you and gain confidence in you, I think that’s what makes it go along way.”

Howard added he wants to garner Jameis’ trust in the way The Franchise views Cameron Brate. Howard explained how he sees Jameis throwing to Brate even when he’s covered because he is confident Brate will break the route just right.

I trust Jamies and OJ but I don’t trust Mike Smith having a Bucs a good defense.

  2. AlteredEgo Says:

Jameis….has missed many throws this season….hence the record…lets be honest…

  3. Roy T. Buford Says:

My only criticism of Jameis is he needs to get his team into the end zone earlier. In the pre-season I didn’t think much of it–but we saw the problems with lack of touchdowns early then, and for at least half of the regular season games. In five of the Bucs games (including in ARI where Fitz was in), they relied on frantic fourth quarter efforts to fight back from being down…way down in some cases. Dirk and company mixed the play calling a LITTLE BIT better last Sunday, but itn needs to improve, and Jameis has to lead his team to finish more, earlier.

  4. Buc Fan in NC Says:

Altered Ego, every qb misses throws.

  5. Roy T. Buford Says:

Bottom line–this offense should easily have had a 14-0 lead both last week and against the Patriots.

  6. Dreambig Says:

Altered Ego, Yeah, it was Jameis who let the bills go 75 yards in less than a minute, capped by a 7-8 yard run up the middle with not one single defender in the middle of the field to stop a easy touch down. Jameis is really influential sitting on the bench while the defense gets carved up like a hot knife through butter. But your right, its Jameis missing a few throws that caused that. Brilliant!

  7. Kgh4life Says:

    @AlterdEgo
So your saying if Jameis had just made a couple more throws we would have a winning record? I guess while he was missing throws he was also: missing tackles, missing assignments, playing soft coverage, not running the football with consistency and not rushing the passer. Great observation.

  8. Lamarcus Says:

    Djx????

  9. captjimbo Says:

    Can Howard play DE?

  10. AlteredEgo Says:

Hey…I am a Buc fan from day 1…seen 200+ games live…I beg the Gods Jameis can evolve …until then I will not gloss over the obvious weakness….his accuracy….

  11. GhostofSchiano Says:

This is all well and good JOE but the thought on everyone’s mind is W-T-F with this defense?

What happened from the end of last year to the hot mess garbage we have endured this year? Makes no sense.

  12. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

    @Altered Ego

Judging by your idiotic statements, you could see every football game ever played from now into eternity and still not know what you’re talking about.

Specifically for this last game, Jameis played phenomenally.

Last time I checked, completing 76%, 32-42 of your passes, for 382 yards and 3 TD’s is the definition of Elite QB play.

  13. Waterboy Says:

    @Roy T. Buford

Arizona got the ball 1st and took it right down the field to go up 7-0. There’s no way possible that the offense could’ve started the game 14-0.

  14. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

Also, I don’t have a shred of doubt in my mind that if Adam had not fumbled, Jameis would have led us straight down the field for a win.

  15. AlteredEgo Says:

@ Blake….Jameis has missed many many throws hidden in the stats…I don’t do the fantasy thing….

  16. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

Oh yeah? What about the hidden 55 yard completion wiped away by a holding call?

Fantasy? We’re talking about what HAPPENED.

  17. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Winston has a higher completion percentage, more yards per attempt, 2.5 times as many TDs and the same number of INTs as Mariota. Winston is also #2 among starting QBs in percentage of 1st downs per throw. So, I guess if we drafted Mariota, we’d still have guys complaining about our QB. Winston has flaws and has a lot to improve upon, but some posters on here are acting like he’s Rick Mirer, Heath Shuler or Akili Smith. He’s still one of the 2 or 3 youngest starting QBs in the league. 23 years old, guys. How long did Alex Smith take to develop into a consistently good QB? I bet San Francisco wishes they could make THAT decision over again. My point is to just be patient. Giants fans were calling for Eli to be cut for years, and then he won a SB. Then they were calling for him to be cut again, and then he won a SB. If Winston has an “Eli career”, I’ll be happy. He doesn’t have to be the best, he just has to be good enough. Too early to tell. Look at Eli’s stats for the first 3 years and tell me that you think he would have more SBs than Rodgers. A lot of time, guys. A lot of time.

  18. ben Says:

bucs D is most of the problem but with receivers and tight ends on this team, Winston should also be better the average ,which he is not been through the total of games played.

  19. Buc Fan in NC Says:

Altered Ego hidden in stats? You either complete it or don’t. It’s as simple as that.

  20. GhostofSchiano Says:

How did we go from a top ten defense to last in the league in three….short….years.

Did some research and it provided more questions than answers –

  21. Nole4JabooANDdBucs Says:

TRUST is and has been the operative word with Jameis! Talent alone will not get it but JW will hold the ball out rather than throw it to someone who is not going to fight for it or show some WANT TO…that’s how awesome plays are made. If I’m not mistaken that is what JW told Djax when he was raggin him for throwing to Mike over him. People have noticed in the past games Djax will not make adjustments, but Sunday he showed some WANT TO, and grabbed victory from the hands of defeat when the lineman tried to snatch the ball from him.

All the guys who consistently practice with JW gets it and Djax hopefully is on the way.

Go back and watch Jameis games his first year with the posse he had.

That is why he will throw it to Mike, Cam and Hump even if they are covered. Hump had a human error Sumday but he is reliable and a hustler…

  22. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I would love to see this stat if Joe or one of the posters can provide.

Average yardage per run on 1st and 10
    vs
Average yardage per pass (including incomplete) on 1st and 10

We are getting stuffed at the line of scrimmage on most every 1st and 10 running play especially in the re

  23. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Especially in the red zone…..play action will work for Jameis on 1st down.

  24. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I believe that OJ Howard will eventually become one of the very best 1st round picks the Bucs have ever made.

  25. BuccaneEric75 Says:

AlteredEgo, I actually agree with you about your “hidden stats” argument. Winston had GREAT stats, but I’m objective. He had and INT dropped on that throw to Brate. That should have been a pick. DJax ripped an INT out of the defenders hands and it turned into a completion. That should have been a pick. The throw that I really didn’t like was the pass to Humphries on, I think, a WR screen. He threw it way too high and Hump had to jump straight up for it and got CREAMED. I thought Hump was out on that play. I AM objective. Those throws could have been the plays that lost the game if the Bills D could hold on to the ball, but by focusing on those, you’re ignoring the 25+ other completions that were good. Just take the good with the bad.

  26. Nole4JabooANDdBucs Says:

Posse he had his first year at FSU…go Bucs!

  27. Roy T. Buford Says:

@Waterboy…you are correct. I said last week and against the Patriots, but I meant BUF two days ago…last weekEND, and the Patriots…should have started of 14-0.

  28. NJBucsFan Says:

    Really Daryl Tapp. Yuck

  29. TheBucsAnthem Says:

it’s more than a “hot mess”

look for “implosion” to come soon after the next loss

  30. ScottyinFatAntonio Says:

Why not sign both Tapp AND Gilberry?

  31. NJBucsFan Says:

Scotty. We would need to clear another spot to sign both. Neither makes much sense in my mind

  32. Erik w/ Clean Athletics 'The Kwon Alexander of Bucs fans' Says:

Even with our terrible defense, we would’ve won that game if Hump didn’t fumble.

I was happy with how Jameis was throwing the ball against the Bills. If he and our offense can continue to get in sync, we should be able to win most of our remaining games even without a stellar defensive effort…

We can still get right back in the hunt if we can just start that dang winning streak that everyone is expecting/hoping for…

  33. unbelievable Says:

Speaking of that pass to Hump, did anyone else notice how strange that actual pass looked? It happened earlier in the game on a screen to Hump, as well as once last week.

It seems like Jameis is throwing these high arching, floating balls the loop up and down to the intended target.

Looks incredibly dangerous, and not like screen passes thrown by any other teams in the league. What gives?

  34. LakeLand Says:

We have Jameis Winston, O.J.Howard,Cam Brate,Mike Evans, DJAX, LVD,GMC,Kwon,Kendell Beckwith, and a host of other good young players. But Carson Wentz,Marcus Mariota, Trevor Siemian, Dak Prescott,Mitch Trubisky, DeShaun Watson and Jared Golf, all QBs that came into the NFL with Jameis or after him, have better records than the Bucs. And the teams are playing better football, and most of them has less talent on their roster than the Bucs. There’s something serious wrong with this picture.

  35. Lamarcus Says:

If the bucs pass on jw for Mariatta. The bucs fan would of been pissed

  36. 813bucboi Says:

In hope we run 2TE sets vs CAR… Worked well last week…Sims in the slot was a nice wrinkle too…Dirk might have to go full ” out score you mode”… this week….GO BUCS!!!

  37. Kobe Faker Says:

i hope koetter doesnt reneg on our handshake agreement

minimum 6 targets for OJ per game

i told koetter to put OJ on the slot ala travis kelce and lessen humps snaps

    he said dont push it

…so the FREEOJSTOCKER movement is retired

  38. Gabe Kelber Says:

Joe, you heard about the report that Noah Spence injured his shoulder and could possibly have season-ending surgery?

  39. DoNUTS Says:

Bucs just signed Reggie White….I mean Darryl Tapp. 😉 4 sacks in past 5 years! Lets the sacks roll on Sundays!

  40. DoNUTS Says:

Tapp replaces Spence. Its a done deal.

  41. SB Says:

I smell an injury issue or two here.

  42. Eric Says:

    Howard is a beast.

We have a lot of the pieces in place, starting at QB.

    Enough of the crying already.

  43. Rrsrq Says:

If Seattle signs Dwight Freeney and the Bucs didn’t whisper his way, this could be the beginning of a swan song for some personnel people, especially if he plays well. Did not we see how Vic Beasley played under the tutoledge of Freney, who does Spence have to model…

  44. Issic Haggins Says:

    Please give Barber 20 carries

  45. Mike Johnson Says:

How about simply..Giving us a reason to be happy about our Bucs? Give Buc fans a reason to want to come to games and spend their..hard earned money. How about just…WINNING. Give us a reason to be..proud of our Bucs.. Proud to wear our Buc tee shirts, Jerseys and caps. My sister who lives in Arizona says she brought 2 all most new Tampa Bay Buc Jerseys for like..5 Bucks at the Goodwill. Hell, they giving them away in other cities outside of FL!!! WE CAN DO BETTER.

  46. yrbndr Says:

@ unbelievble though it is spilled milk, JW’s screen to AH was a lob pass that took too much time and I am sure affected the timing of the play! To AH’s credit he tried to get as much as he could and was not horrible with ball security and had it knocked loose by an incredible play by the DB… With that being said you can’t allow that ball to come loose…

  47. unbelievable Says:

@yrbndr it’s one of the highest lobs for a screen pass i’ve seen in recent memory. And it wasn’t the first time either.

Just looks so awkward and seems to throw off the play timing. It’s also floating in the air so long I’m waiting for a defender to jump up and grab it…

  48. Pryda...sec 147 Says:

Jameis is gonna turn it up a notch soon enough can’t wait to see him develop into the elite Qb we know he is.

  49. Lamarcus Says:

We can’t worry about jameis high screen passes that has no effect with outcomes. And hell no, no bucs jersey here in las vegas still cost the same everywhere. Not given away. Especially that WINSTON 3 jersey is pricey. Jw is Bucs god here. I tell ppl I’m a bucs fan and jw is all they know. They really think he is elite here lol. Not yet i tell em. Mike evans gets props.

  50. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

According to Football Outsiders metrics. Jameis is currently the 6th best QB in football.

Still not good enough for the haters though.

  51. LakeLand Says:

It’s not the haters, it’s the Bucs record. You won’t get respect until you win, that’s how it goes in the NFL. It’s all about the W, stats don’t mean nothing.

  52. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

^The stats that say we pretty much have the worst defense in football mean something. And represents precisely why our record is what it is.

  53. Lamarcus Says:

We cannot put blame on 23 year old qb for a losing culture. Last time I checked jw never experienced this much losing before bucs. He defined WINNER before coming here. He recruits the free agents for us. He is everything to us. He carries the team. Better get real. Gmc ur winner of the bucs who will not change his position for no one attitude (3-4??) Freeney not coming tonight proves no elite or past elite talent wants to play next to 93. It should be a dream to play next to him or nah? We went thru a guaranteed over 100 different defensive lineman and they all come “flat”………7 years worth
We drafted for it, we coached for it, we signed young guys who had success we signed older guys with success. We developed on practice squads no dice. Nothing seems to work out on the d line. Common sense should tell you gmc doesn’t work for us

  54. Lamarcus Says:

The bucs even got dline men we wanted. Still doesn’t work

  55. Lamarcus Says:

And the longer gmc is here our defense will be worse and worse and worse and worse. Our d coordinator will have even worse historical stats than msmith, who is worse than lovie , who was worse than schiano who was worse than raheem. Do u get the pattern?

  56. Steven007 Says:

Tapp? How about Chris Doleman while we’re at it? I liked Tapp around 10 years ago.

  57. jamesmack Says:

Probably time to let go of the sexist talk a la Harvey Weinstein. “Sunday was quite a look-at-me-NFL party for O.J. Howard, the rookie tight end the Bucs coveted more than Joe yearns for an RV rental excursion with a crew of Buccaneers cheerleaders.” It just sounds stupid at this point. You do have advertisers on this page who may not want to be associated with that sort of Billy Bush/Trump/RV trash talking. Just sayin’.
LOL. “Trash talking.” You got to be joking. Sorry, Joe’s never going to be afraid to have a little tasteful fun — in print.–Joe

  58. DB55 Says:

So Dwight Freeney signed with the Seahawks. Sigh.

  59. Steven007 Says:

The only thing that separates Freeney from Tapp is four years, and oh yeah about 100 sacks, haha.

  60. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

Can you blame Freeney for not wanting to come here?

    Sigh… I know I can’t.

  61. DB55 Says:

Why doesn’t anyone want to play with one of the best DTs in the league? Maybe it’s not about him maybe it’s the heat or something idk. But darn Seattle over Florida? Must be the pot.

  62. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

Maybe it’s about the fact that our record is 2-4, we’ve lost 3 straight games, our secondary sucks, and 2 defensive free agents are complaining about playing time.

The current state of the Bucs is why a guy like Dwight Freeney.

Why is it always Geralds fault? He is only one man.

  63. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

Excuse me, the state of the the team is why he didnt wanna come here.

  64. DB55 Says:

    Not his fault!

  65. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

Not saying that He is playing good. Just saying, football is a team game, it comes down to more than one guy. Right now this defense sucks as a team.

  66. johnnybuc Says:

maybe jameis should stop forcing it into tight windows to brate so much it seems his fallen in love with doing it like he did with mike last season… just want jameis to take the easy throw sometimes

  67. Bucs Nihilist Says:

hard for most people to change…they start with a narrative and their ego will not let it go.

  68. Poor Glennon Says:

If Winston does what’s expected. With the best WR 1,2,3 TE 1,2 in the NFL. Thats 300y+ 3TD and 1 turnover and 24+ points. We will win consistently. Ya our defence sucks. But we should be able to match point for point. But he is never gunna be that consistent. Remember this is the way he want’s to play. He’s Brett Farve….let him sling it. Is the way most of you actually think. Koetter didn’t expect the defence to be this bad. He expected like most of us to be middle of the road. So he could get Winston to play smart…manage the game. Even the head coach is fully aware that we can not win this way. Is Drew Brees consistent enough to lead this team in this situation……heck ya. Brett Farve…..heck ya. Winston heck 👎
