Bill Polian Talks Bucs

October 5th, 2017

Hall of Fame GM breaks down Bucs offense.

When Bill Polian discusses the Bucs, Joe listens.

The Hall of Fame general manager may be the best guy on any medium when it comes to breaking down football for fans who hunger and crave insider morsels.

Last Sunday, Polian worked the BSPN Radio broadcast of the Giants-Bucs game. It may have been the first time in years Polian saw a Bucs game up close and personal and he decided to share thoughts while co-hosting “Late Hits” with Alex Marvez earlier this week, heard exclusively on SiriusXM NFL Radio.

In particular, Polian really likes the Bucs offense, save one position.

“The Bucs do have an explosive, explosive offense,” Polian said. “They have some people who can go get the ball. That’s a pretty potent offensive team that is going to be in the thick of it, I think, in that division. Don’t be fooled: This is a challenging, contending Buccaneers team. And they will only get better when Doug Martin is in shape.”

Below are Polian’s thoughts on specific players and positions.

Jacquizz Rodgers: He’s gotten much, much stronger as he has gotten older in the league. He finishes runs way better than he used to.

DeSean Jackson: He is just beginning to work his way into the rotation and get comfortable with Jameis.

Tight ends: [Cam] Brate and O.J. Howard are a one-two punch that are really, really – they are dynamite. They are dynamic.

Mike Evans: He has gotten bigger and stronger and he’s grown up. He has gotten to be a better route runner. And so he is a challenge because of his size and his physicality for any corner that plays him.

Jameis Winston: Jameis is really — has really developed. He is confident. He knows where he is going with the ball. He can move around in the pocket. He is much more careful – at least he was Sunday – more careful with the ball and that is because he knows where everybody is I think. He knows what is expected of the play. With two minutes to go [against the Giants] I said on the air, “If Jameis is going to be the franchise quarterback, we are going to see it here against a wonderful Giants defense.” And down the field they went.

Kickers (indirectly, Nick Folk): Just this side of awful.

Polian also had a lot to say about Martin. Joe will share that in the coming days.

What happened Joe, was his comments about the Defense not suitable for print? FCC regulations?

  2. SOEbuc Says:

Is it me or was there an article about three ways back that said former Pro Bowl center Shaun O’Hara said he never knows where the blitz is coming and Polian says “he is much more careful with the ball and that is because he knows where everybody is I think.” Who’s correct?

  3. Capt.Tim Says:

    Agree with his comments.

Buuut, its the defense that is our issue tonight

    Tom Brady
No pass rush( Other than McCoy getting double/Triple teamed)
    Grimes at Cb.
Hargreaves is struggling badly. The Rookie Smith is playing much better. Thats scary
Safety- Conte, and a rookie getting his first start. And so far- no backups

    Lets review
    Tom Brady
    No pass rush
    Weak secondary

How does everyone see that turning out?

    If only we had a DE . . .

  4. Nole4JabooANDdBucs Says:

My sentiments exactly SOEbuc…so who is serving an agenda?!
O’Hara was breaking down two specific plays and he wasn’t wrong. Not everything is a conspiracy.–Joe

  5. BucUtalkinBout Says:

I see a 32nd ranked D and a 40 year old QB coming into our house w a 7-Game Home Win Streak on the line….. Time for our Offensive “Coming Out Party”

BB’s drop is going to be fast guys….D is not good enough.

    GO Bucs!

  6. sorryitriggeredyou Says:

That NY secondary is no joke and Jameis shredded them. Joe I’m really surprised you didn’t hype JW after the NY game. That was a huge step forward for him in his development. Now all he needs it to do it on the road.
Actually, Joe wrote 2 stories lauding Jameis right after the game. One is here https://www.joebucsfan.com/2017/10/good-jameis-returns/ –Joe

  7. sorryitriggeredyou Says:

@BucUtalkinBout Absolutely doable game tonight as long as JW stays in that NY state of mind. NAS reference 🙂

  8. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Capt. Tim,

Your worries are exactly the same as mine. Aside from Brady throwing us a couple picks (not very likely, but maybe he’s due), I don’t see how we are going to stop them. James is going to be under a lot of pressure to keep up, and unfortunately he tends to struggle in that situation.

  9. Buc50 Says:

Place Kicker is terrible. Punter is a weapon for us.

  10. Capt Tim Sucks! Says:

We just need Jameis to F***kin’ SEND IT!

  11. James Walker Says:

    Do the humpty hump!

  12. LUVMYBUCS Says:

When Brate trucked Collins (Giants) – I was dude WTF.
This kid is ready to run with the big dogs now.

  13. LUVMYBUCS Says:

When Brate trucked Collins (Giants) – I was like dude WTF.

  14. GhosofSchiano Says:

Is Justin Trattou active for tonight?

  15. BucFanFromOH Says:

    @GhosofSchiano

No, he is still on IR. They are bringing up Isaiah Johnson (S) to fill the voided spot created by releasing Smith.

  16. Capt.Tim Says:

Well, I guess db55 cant win an arguement, he resorts to name calling
    Whiny lil bitch

  17. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    Obviously,

Joe didn’t want to post all the bad things about our defense because there are alot outside of a few good players.

but thanks for being up-lifting Joe 🙂

  18. Kevin Says:

The thing that surprises me on Jameis is that he hardly ever checkdowns anymore. On the TV angle you can often see the back or te free but not the deep window he throws too.

  19. GhostofSchiano Says:

Scoring points tonight is the least of my worries. Giving up points has knots in my stomach. In my best Captain Tim impression –

    Lets Review
    GOAT Brady
    No pressure
    weak secondary

But it was reported on another site that Gronk will be limited…..so there is hope.

  20. 813bucboi Says:

why not share what he said about martin now?….you must be waiting for martin to fall on his face so you can say,” told you so” to polian and others….lol….aint gonna happen JOE….you like your crow baked or fried?….GO BUCS!!!

  21. Mike Johnson Says:

Guess he said our defense was no 1 aye Joe?

  22. Lord Cornelius Says:

Watch Martin run for 200 yards lol

  23. Capt.Tim Says:

    Ghost
    Yup, ’bout right, lol

But as long we have Jameis, we have hope.
    We really need this win.
Lots of long road trips in our future.

A lot of concerns, but always support the Bucs!
Meybe Ryan Russell and Will Clark will both come of age tonight, and heat Brady up. As great as he is, he has never liked getting hit!

  24. cmurda Says:

I third what Capt Tim and Hawaiian said. How in the world are we going to stop Brady and the Patsies? Our defense has looked pretty rough and there doesn’t seem to be any of our injured coming back tonight that weren’t back for the Giants game. VH3 needs to be on his game and we just have to keep our fingers crossed that the D Line gets some semblance of a pass rush. I’ve been crossing fingers for over 10 years with our D Line and haven’t gotten lucky yet. I just can’t see any other way than winning in a shootout.

  25. Pit Says:

Joe you get to quite before the game. We need more nuggets from the locker room, from the stadium. Who is dressing, who is not. I use only your website for Bucs info screw all the others. So if you can give us those info we might not even have to visit other websites for good.

  26. Pistol Pete Says:

Shootout coming tonight….don’t go to bed at halftime.
Probably a 44-42 outcome and it could go either way.
Probably last team with the ball will take this one.
Would feel pretty awesome to be sitting at 3-1 after the first quarter of the season. With 58 and 54 sidelined 2 & 3 of these games, 3-1 would really be nothing short of miraculous…right?

  27. Joe Says:

Joe you get to quite before the game. We need more nuggets from the locker room, from the stadium. Who is dressing, who is not.

All of this information is released by the Bucs per NFL rules 90 minutes before kickoff. Only select TV media is allowed on the field before the game. No one is allowed in the locker room before the game.

Shoot, the Bucs won’t even allow Ira on the field any more, before or after the game.

  28. Doctor Stroud Says:

Bucs fans are accustomed to having an stout, aggressive defense, but we are going to have to get used to the idea that the offense must carry this team. Just like last week, last possession wins!

  29. Defense Rules Says:

@cmurda … “I just can’t see any other way than winning in a shootout.” Those make the absolute best football games IMO cmurda. We now have an offense that should be able go head-to-head with just about any team in the NFL. Time for their coming-out party. Can’t think of a better place to rack up 6-7 TDs than against the Pats. Bucs will win 42-35 if DK comes up with a decent game-plan & our offense plays the way it’s capable of playing. Forget the FGs tonight Dirk … go for the throat.

  30. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

First time in years I’ve seen Bill Polian say something positive about our team.

  31. Pit Says:

Thank you For the clarification Joe. Gronk is out btw

  32. uckinator Says:

Captain (Admiral) Tim – DB 55 accused me of being a know-it-all along with other explatatives when i tried to explain economics dictated his conspiracy theories instead of some mean conservative “invisible hand” holding his liberal views down. Oh well, you don’t know what you don’t know.
