Bad Film & A Side-Stepping Coordinator

October 25th, 2017

Tough times

Joe went through the torture of watching the Bucs’ game film against the Bills.

One element on Joe’s docket was studying Chris “Swaggy” Baker to see if his Sunday night Twitter moaning about playing time had any merit.

It didn’t.

The film is bad.

Baker got pushed around far too often. Baker, even on the plays he did make, was unimpressive. They were all behind him, not in front of him. And one tackle credited to him he didn’t even make.

Joe only caught one loaf, but the guy would be best defined as a non-factor against the run or pass. Some might say he stinks.

Today, defensive coordinator Mike Smith was asked point-blank by Rock Riley (@RealRockRiley) how Baker is playing and Smith dodged the question. Smith said Baker is a “rotational player” and he’ll play more if teams run the ball more.

That was interesting, especially since JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman was told by Redskins officials (Baker’s former team) that Baker was better against the pass than against the run.

It’s clear to Joe that Baker isn’t good against either.

  1. Tampa Bay Tailgater Says:

    Joe,
Any other games this year that Swaggy made a good impression? I haven’t really seen penetration just usually him stumbling off the field, hiking up his pants like a fat kid running a race.

  2. Bucsfanman Says:

Bad FA signing so far. We should’ve seen the writing on the wall.
You would think a man his size would accidentally tackle somebody just by falling down!

  3. Brandon Says:

Not a surprise. The Redskins didn’t fight to keep him, they didn’t act like him leaving was of any importance, and all he did once he got here was run his mouth and sit on the sidelines. The thing is about SWAG… it is the definition of style with no substance. This fat loaf of crap has neither. I’m pretty sure his nickname was meant to be ironic.

  4. TheBucsAnthem Says:

release Fatty Baker along with BS Ward……they’re “ME” guys not “TEAM” guys

get em outta here Mr GM

  5. Kyle Says:

Looks like SAGGY baker is a bust. I love Jason Light, but his track record with free age he is horrible so far. I’m with Joe, they would be best releasing him. He has no trade value.

  6. Patrick in VA Says:

I don’t think anyone is confused about who this guy is or what he means to the team. He’s a non-producing malcontent who is on video being a detrimental element to team building. Not a ringing endorsement. We took a swing on him and came up short. I’m not going to bash Licht too bad for that, but let’s not make this a mistake that haunts us for more years than what’s looking like this already nearly lost season. Dump the guy in the off season and let’s bring in someone who can be a real part of the team

  7. Kyle Says:

Sorry meant free agent track record of Licht

  8. DoNUTS Says:

“Joe went through the torture of watching the Bucs’ game film”

Someone call Ira and tell him to get mental health services on the phone…..

Great thing on the “give a roof” yesterday. I did it. Love our vets without them there is no football Sunday.

  9. Evolvingbucfan Says:

I sure hope we don’t see his tree-dry humping, own team kicker hecklin’, pro non-pad pratice wantin, twitter soap boxin, practice dodging, non def-fence impacting, tracy morgan impersonating(the Fat early days tracy morgan) ass around next year!!!!!!!

Only way he can positively impact this defense, as i see it, would be leaving it.

  10. Kobe Faker Says:

Not only does he stinks on the field..

This fat pos had “baker effect” run tru training crap…

And our physicality and intensity has suffered

    Come on licht beer!

Wasn’t the goal of the future to be bring in jameis type players?

    Headscratcher indeed

  11. Locked In Says:

What a perfect picture of him, ole dumpy sittin on the bench during practice.

  12. Warrenfb12 Says:

    Dude seems like a cancer.

  13. jerseybuc Says:

I thought he played pretty well against us in that back breaking loss to the Skins last year. So, was surprised when I heard people in the Redskin organization had leaked that he wouldnt’ be missed. Guess they were right. Guys like this that don’t like to practice are problems when teams go sideways. We need people that will fight. That care. That play hard and take losing seriously. Tired of seeing these guys smiling after a tough loss but that is another story….

  14. AlteredEgo Says:

Bruce Allen is laughing his azz off….

  15. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    Bottomline…………….

He’s just here to collect his last big payday……he’s a paycheck player

get him outta here mr GM.

  16. LakeLand Says:

Greg Schiano is laughing at this joke of a franchise. This is what he had to say back in August, and he was 100% honest.

“This is the most unselfish, humble group that I’ve ever been around,” Schiano, who is entering his second year as Urban Meyer’s top assistant in Columbus, told the Big Ten Network on Saturday of the Buckeyes’ defense. “Probably — not probably — the most talented group I’ve ever been around. They are all about each other. That’s what makes it fun to come to work every day with these guys.”

Big Ten Network host Dave Revsine then asked Schiano if this is the most talented defensive line he has ever coached, including his time in the NFL.

“It is, and that’s not a joke,” said Schiano, who presided over the nation’s sixth-ranked defense last season. “We had a great player in Tampa by the name of Gerald McCoy, a tremendous player, but that was one guy. I go back to my days at Miami in ’99 and 2000; this is clearly a better group than those guys, so that’s saying something.”

Nothing has changed since Schiano left here

  17. JonBuc Says:

Old Saggy Baker…the butterball bust. Man it’s brutal as a fan when your season is over by Halloween. It’s been a bad last decade of football…last year looking flukey a la 2010.

  18. JJBucFan Says:

So what I have seen is both Smith and Koetter have “called out” players in the media on numerous occasions. This is really unheard of for successful coaches. Most coaches handle this stuff behind close doors. NOT OUR GUYS!! It is truly the fastest way to lose your locker room. My opinion? These 2 guys are way over their head and can’t handle the pressure of the expectations put on this team. Both looking to get paid off!! Just my opinion of course, but this is getting ridiculous.

  19. ElioT Says:

Baker is a joke, horrible signing and I wouldn’t be surprised if his sh*t attitude has already infected others. Get his a** the hell outta here asap!

If they lose Sunday to Carolina, and in the process this horrid defense continues to puke all over their co*ks; every player on that side of the ball over the age of 28 needs to be on the trading block.

Including McCoy… I’m sure he would probably welcome a change of scenery at this point.

This team needs as many draft picks as possible and outside of RB, they need to spend them all on defense.

I’m really hoping the offense continues to improve and the Bucs can at least get another year or two out of the main starters.

    #PURGETHELOSERS

    #CUTOUTTHECANCER

    Go Sucs!

  20. Nick2 Says:

Now we know why they let him go. But why do we find these things out when we were trying to get to the playoffs??????? Jon Gruden where are you????

  21. AlteredEgo Says:

“Nothing has changed since Schiano left here”…..most importantly the attitude of the players…in general they are so full of themselves…”not my problem…not my job”….most of these guys were starting grade school when the Bucs won the SB….they don’t relate to the fans or the history of the NFL….and I don’t relate to NFL 2017….

  22. Nick2 Says:

I know we have a lot of Gruden haters but I am not one of them. The week he is enshrined in the ring of honor there will be thousands of fans begging him to come back and I think he will!!!!!!!!!!!~!!!!

  23. Pepsi Says:

Geeze Licht is really bombing out when it comes to helping this teams Dline.

  24. TheBucsAnthem Says:

please stop all this Gruden talk…….he will NEVER coach again on the NFL level

he has the best jobs in the world….

    Doing Hooters Commercials and ESPN

  25. ElioT Says:

Can everyone STOP with the “Bring back Gruden” sh*t? Please!!!!

We need to stop trying to capture the past, it’s ridiculous! STOP IT!

I’ve watched this team my whole life and the franchised is cursed with bad-luck, and bringing Gruden back would be a disaster.

There would be SO much pressure, extremely high expectations that he would never be able to deliver upon.

What if the team was absolutely horrible, and continued the trend of setting records for futility?

TCould you imagine the laughing stock? We would take over for the Browns as the most pathetic franchise in all of pro-sports.

    Stop!

  26. Patrick in VA Says:

For the people that keep talking about bringing Gruden back, ask the Redskins how bringing Joe Gibbs back went for them after he had retired for a while. Then ask them how bringing back Mike Shanehan went for them when they pulled him out of moth balls. You can’t just throw a guy in because he has a record of past results with a different team where they created a scheme around a league that was played a lot different than it is now and expect similar results. It just doesn’t work that way.

  27. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Who didn’t see this coming? Anyone? Even when rumors started that the Bucs would sign him?

Seriously…ask yourself this…have any of the free agent signings on defense this year helped improve the team?

    Nope.

And the draft picks? Maybe potentially one, but he hasn’t yet.

The moral of the story? Mike Smith isn’t purely at fault.

  28. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

The same people who want Gruden back would want him fired after two seasons.

  29. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I see only one person here wanting Gruden back. Nick 2.

  30. Do it Says:

Bruce Allen should have been fired not Gruden.

  31. DCBUCSFAN Says:

    Albert Haynesworth 2.0

  32. GhostofSchiano Says:

Release Saggy, sign any DE hungry for an opportunity.

  33. rrsrq Says:

Dwight Freeney signs with the Seahawks, SMDH, we sign Tapp instead of going after Freeney when we knew we had no pass rush, this could look like the Swaggy for Campbell signing.
But maybe both play their arse off the rest of the year and I am wrong.

  34. GhostofSchiano Says:

    Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

The moral of the story? Mike Smith isn’t purely at fault.

    —————————————————————————————-
    AGREED

The only shining stars on this “D” is the LB’s

Everywhere else needs upgrades, I see the 2018 draft being all defensive selections.

  35. Defense Rules Says:

Joe, right on about Baker (“The film is bad”) but I don’t share your perspective I guess that Mike Smith was ‘side-stepping’ when asked point-blank about Baker. According to you, Smitty said that Baker is a ‘rotational player’. He probably should’ve left it at that, since folks seem to be reading a lot more into his comments. Smitty sees Baker as a run-stopper (which he apparently isn’t all that good at) and that’s it. Would much rather see McDonald in with GMC on passing downs personally … Big Mac’s been a LOT more impressive this season than Baker has.

  36. Patrick in VA Says:

I can’t help but wonder if the top DEs that are out there just don’t want to come to Tampa because of the scheme we run. It’s sort of like how Jackson came here this offseason because we had Jameis and that was a draw that caused him to take less money from other teams, maybe the DEs available look at the way we do things and see that it’s not in their best interest to come here. It might not be that Licht isn’t going after them, maybe they just don’t want to come and be a part of this defensive scheme.

  37. bucster Says:

Dominik > Licht (but barely – they both suck)

  38. AlteredEgo Says:

I am beginning to think Snoop Dog is the only coach these players can relate to….

  39. wewantgruden Says:

Maybe Baker should use his imagination and pretend the football is a donut or cheese burger. I guarantee you he will get much more production. I do believe he may have some incriminating pictures of Mike Smith….

  41. Greg Says:

Saints are cutting Sterling Moore, Bucs better get on this

  42. ATrain Says:

    Joe,

When is this same type of film study going to be down on GMC. He is the leader and Best DLineman the Bucs have.

I see alot of standing straight up into the block, I think coach called this chicken fighting, I see a lot of following the block down the line away from the play.

There is several double teams but that is expected with the caliber of player GMC is.

I dont see any fire off of the ball , fighting to the inside or outside of the line, or much in the backfield especially in the last two games.

Please hold GMC to the atleast the same standard and dont give him a pass ever week.

  43. NoFlyZone27 Says:

I think this is a situation where there is equal blame on both sides. For one, in practice, as a coach, there is no excuse for allowing players to give half effort day in and day out. We hear it all from the time “just do your job!” Missed gap assignments, lack of communication, Missed assignments, what are the coaches doing during the week, especially when players will say after a game “they didn’t do anything that surprised us!”

The other part of the blame is on the players. You, as a player, must take pride in what you do and have a sense of urgency about it! When players don’t care, it shows. Teams suffer and losing becomes a regular cornerstone of an organization.

  44. ndog Says:

This might be Lichts worst signing yet as not only is this guy useless on the feild he also is a festering fungus in the locker that needs to be cleaned ASAP. I know Jameis doesn’t have the power to pick players, but maybe he should cause I cant imagine he would have picked up this loser as Jameis wants guys who want to WORK HARD and win. This guy is exactly the opposite of that! Ira found that out from day one yet our GM couldn’t? I have liked Licht, but his mistakes are starting to really cost this team and that is where the like goes away quickly. The horrible decisions are now listed as Hargraves, Aguayo, Spence, Ayers, Baker, Ghost Johnson, A Collins, letting go of Revis, Verner, letting go of Barron, McNicholas, not getting any DE’s this offseason, not getting any RB’s this offseason. That is at least 12 by my count which is an entire starting unit. Hard to win with that many wasted resources period!

  45. AlteredEgo Says:

NoFly…”For one, in practice, as a coach, there is no excuse for allowing players to give half effort day in and day out. We hear it all from the time “just do your job!”
I suspect coaches simply can not go old school traditional football coach on today’s NFL prima donna’s…without risking a blow off response and undermining attitude from the players…players disrepute to coach/coaches and it is over….there are only a few exceptions in the 32 teams

  46. Patrick in VA Says:

@ndog – I’m sorry, man, but I can’t agree with you on a number of the examples you gave.
    – We’ve all suffered as a result of Aguayo becoming a head case, but the kid was solid as a rock coming out of college. Every indication was that he was a guy that you could plug in and forget about for the next 15 years. You can argue that they got him too high, but if he had gone on the trajectory that he was supposed to then we wouldn’t be talking about that now.
    – Ayers was the reason that defense became what it was last year and was the lone element of nastiness that we’ve had on that line. We got him on the back end of his career and we had him one year longer than he had in him, but it was far from a bad pick up.
    – Spence? Really? The guy has been very promising when he’s healthy. There’s no way that Licht could have predicted injuries.
    – Hargreaves looked every bit the part last year and was on an upward path toward being a top flight corner. He lost something in the off season. Nobody knows what it is, but that’s hardly Licht’s fault.
    – Also, you can’t reference a running back that was drafted who was then cut and then say that Licht did nothing to address the running back position. He did, but the guy they picked couldn’t figure the scheme out. That doesn’t make it better, but let’s deal in facts.

  47. Lamarcus Says:

Gmc gets a pass for not recruiting, scaring the gm’s away from drafting donald top 5 dt. At at my wits end with the “triple team scheme” every d coordinator has to run

All in all. We got to take the good with bad tho

  48. D-Rome Says:

Another bad FA signing by Jason Licht.

  49. GhostofSchiano Says:

    @ JOE

I still cannot get my head around this.

The Bucs currently have 18.4 million in Cap space. aka Glazer Loot

Licht signed Baker to a three year deal worth 15.75 mil. (1st year guaranteed)

Ward signed a one year deal worth 5 million.

On March 9, 2017, Campbell signed a four-year, $60 million contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Campbell is worth more than these two cry babies ever will be. WHAT WAS LICHT THINKING???????????????????????????

  50. Q Says:

Joe sounds alot like GMC ….he has a knack for getting d line men who come here to loaf

  51. GhostofSchiano Says:

    http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/tampa-bay-buccaneers/cap/

If I owned a sports franchise and I could plainly see that we are in dire need of a pass rusher and I have 18 million dollars to spend why does my General Manager sign Daryl Trapp to a $500,000.00 contract when Dwight freeney was available?

Do the Glazers NOT want to win a championship?

  52. ndog Says:

Patrick results are all the matter period!

  53. GhostofSchiano Says:

One year – One Million We could have had Freeney, but all is not lost, let the Daryl Tapp reign begin.

    Curse you Jason Licht.

  54. LakeLand Says:

GhostofSchiano, you forgot about Will Gholston contract

    5 year $27,500,000

    Will Gholston 2017 stats

    9 solo tackles,10 assists, 2 STF

    0 Sacks, 0 FF, 0 FR

    0 sacks, 0 FF, 0 FR

  55. Wausa Says:

It’s obvious that he is not good. VH3 is not good either and neither are the Bucs other defensive backs oh yea the defensive ends are not good either.

  56. Hodad Says:

Losing head coach Koetter says, the best 53 will play, so Baker must be good.

  57. Wausa Says:

Jason Licht has had some very good picks, but last year he refused to help out with receivers and this year he did nothing at corner, pass rush and almost nothing at running back.

Everyone knew going into free agency and the draft the Bucs needed to get more weapons but they also were not in good shape at pass rush, running back and depth at corner.

  58. LakeLand Says:

  62. tnew Says:

Haven’t commented in a while, but this I have to weigh in on. I watched the film as well. ATrain, you hit the nail on the head. If you want to be critical, 5 of our front 7 at any given time where owned pretty much the entire game. I invite anyone with gamepass to go watch the coach’s film. Watch 58 (worst player on that side this week), 93 (70 owned him 1v1 in the first half btw, over the last two weeks I have watched him versus many other players.. more on him), 91, 57 (hate to put him in but he whiffed on a key sack and was handled), 98, 92 (Gholston is not playing as hungry this year as last) and 90 (his film was not the worst on the line). This will take a while as you have to go back and watch each snap 3-4 times.

Not gonna trash the secondary, but only one really played well.

Lavonte, Beckwith and I will say it and admit that I was wrong about him, Justin Evans played good games. There is a reason that Justin Evans is getting playing time at safety. He’s outperforming the others.

Now, given the state of our edge rush. We either need to play more in the 3-4 or… Why doesn’t GMC rotate to the end position every so often. Calais Cambell split 3tech and DE when he was in a 4-3. Reggie White split time when he was in a 4-3. I mention these two because this is more the type of athlete GMC is. Compare body types to the better DE and DT’s and what does GMC more closely resemble. I would much rather him trying to be impactful from the End position. So many times, his “disruptiveness” ends up in him washing down the line. He gets sideways quick trying to split the gaps. He doesn’t run twists or stunts overly well unlike say, Ayers who gets used unless he is on a twist or stunt. I’m not saying full time duty from here out, but I don’t know why not for 8 or so snaps a game. He can’t go full time because he simply lacks the vast array of pass rush moves from the outside to play full time, but he has a great get off… good enough that the Tackle will have to drop to set, at this point he has a good enough bull rush to cave the pocket from the outside, he also has a good enough swim and rip move to win to the inside. I would wager, if he had 8 snaps at DE a game, he would pick up 6-8 sacks a year from that spot.

  63. DB55 Says:

Baker got pushed around far too often. Baker, even on the plays he did make, was unimpressive. They were all behind him, not in front of him. And one tackle credited to him he didn’t even make.
    ——————

YOOOOOOOOOO! This guy had 4 tackles!

You could easily put gmcs name on this paragraph and it even more believable.
It took gmc 3 games to make 4 tackles. And he make 13 mil a yr.

You have got to be joking. I can’t take this seriously.

If baker played bad what would you grade gmc?

  66. AlteredEgo Says:

I don’t see the “want to” coming from the DL….they play one play at a time then go home after the game….and they seem OK with it because it does not change…the opponents feel it and fed off the weakness

  67. BUC MAN Says:

I REALLY THING McCoy IS THE TROUBLE MAKER ON THE DEFENCE, ALL THE BAD HABITS RUBS OFF ON OTHER PLAYERS FROM HIM , IF THEY GET RID OF G/M & BAKER THIS DEFENCE WILL TAKE OFF…….

  68. BUC MAN Says:

EVEN ONE OF HIS OWN PLAYERS PUSH HIM OUT OF THE WAY TO MAKE A PLAY ,, TALKIN’ ABOUT BAKER

  69. DoNUTS Says:

Do the Glazers NOT want to win a championship?

This is probably the hardest Bucs question to answer. If I were prosecuting the Glazers, we would be closer to an indictment in 2017. The facts are all there and to be frank I think there focus is on soccer more than football from an investment standpoint (225 Million Pounds in 2017 for player salaries). They bought Man U in 2005, we have not sniffed the playoffs (2007 wildcard) but once since then. The team is consistently and significantly under the cap year after year whereas the Man U club is always near the top 3 teams of salaries in the Premiere league. You tell me? When was the last time they did anything for the city of Tampa that wasn’t contractually forced thru the CITS contract? Glazer children museum is 10 years ago. Please let me know how I am wrong.

  70. Eric Says:

Might as well bring Haynesworth back while we are at it.

  71. JimmyJack Says:

I ain’t blaming Baker here. They have no concept how to build a Dline here. It’s not something that happens in one off-season but we haven’t improved in the 4 years Licht has been here.

I see no hope with the future of this unit. We get physically dominated on 95% of snaps it seems and the Bakers and Spences of the world do nothing to change that factor. Ayers looks OK at times but he does not have the moves to play a legit End in this league.

And I got news for all you C.Campbell crybabies……………There is absolutely no chanse that guy would be effective on this Dline. I don’t know what the Jags are doing on their line but we are a far cry away from one End revamping ours. Nothing against Campbell but I’m sure his fellow linemen have something to do with his success

  72. dooshlarue Says:

    He so Swaggy.

  73. Bucsfanman Says:

@tnew- Now THAT is how you argue a point! It truly is probably the most thought out critique that I’ve seen here in a while regarding the d-line. I’ve also noticed that GMC gets trapped sideways on a lot of plays as well. I think most posters here would like to see GMC at DE, even in an experimental capacity. What the heck can it hurt?!
Don’t tell ATrain I agree though. I have a reputation to uphold! LOL!

  74. AlteredEgo Says:

@DoNuts….of course the Glazers want to win…they have spent plenty…the bought ManU then they got caught up in the financial collapse…combined with all the draft picks given up chasing the SB….those picks would have been the core either side of 2007…then tight purse strings 2008 trying to save the Glazer financial empire …followed by 4 HC’s and FA and high draft picks that screwed up one way or another….

  75. 813bucboi Says:

That was interesting, especially since JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman was told by Redskins officials (Baker’s former team) that Baker was better against the pass than against the run.

sounds like the coaches aren’t doing their job….is smitty forcing a scheme on baker instead of putting him position to win…who knows…we’ll find out sunday….GO BUCS!!!!

  76. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

LOL, Chris Baker can be an awesome player, sometimes.

Joe Mixon | Samaje Perine | Peyton Barber

    Receiver (s)
    Mike Evans | Josh Doctson
    Chris Godwin | Tyler Boyd
    Adam Humprhies

Note: Even though I would squeeze Cinny for Carl Lawson.
The above trade would help out both teams.

Not only would we get rid of two locker room cancers.
But we would also save about $25M in cap space.

    Win Win

  80. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Exactly my brotha.

LUV- I’d trade DJax for a struggling Boyd or Doctson. It might help balance the passing game. We are trying too hard to force the chemistry with DJax and Jameis. Mixon or Perrine would be upgrades at RB but I’m not sure of their success with the play-calling of late.

  83. Bucsfanman Says:

Plus, you’d have either WR for a lengthier period.

Keep dreaming bro. Ain’t no way they trading Mixon.

  85. Frank Pillow Says:

Film doesn’t lie. Simple as that. Swaggy acts and plays like a total bafoon. Not exactly the type of personality that helps raise the game of those around him, or a guy that leads by example. Instead, he’s a non-productive enabler of all of the things we hate about McCoy’s game.

  86. Season Is Over Says:

I like how Baker has become the scapegoat for a horrible team. We are giving passes to veterans and ragging on players that are in their sixth game. Maybe he needs some time to adjust. That excuse seems to work for everyone else.

    @patrickinva,

I have to mention that bringing back Coaches to the Redskins is not the best example of wether or not a retired HC can be effective. Not every team has an owner like Daniel Snyder.
