“Explosive” Bernard Reedy
September 21st, 2017It seems for the time being, the Bucs have a new punt return man.
Benard Reedy fielded punts for the Bucs to open the season against the Bears. Last year it was Adam Humphries (Rudy!).
Earlier this week, Joe asked Humphries for the lowdown on Reedy fielding punts and when Humphries might get his job back. Humphries seemed to be out of the loop.
Well, if Reedy is active on gameday, it seems he will be fielding punts. Winning Bucs coach Dirk Koetter explained today.
“When [Reedy did it in preseason he had an explosive every game,” Koetter said. “He had one in this [Bears] game. When you have 46 guys up on game day you better figure out ways to use all 46 guys. Nothing is worse on the day after a game than when the coaches are going over the grades and they say, ‘This guy played six plays. This guy played four plays.’ We want everybody to help and everybody to have a role. That’s one way Bernard can help our team.
“I think both guys [Humphries and Reedy] are equally capable of being our punt returner, but Adam plays a lot more on offense. Bernard, his body of work from the preseason and from the one chance he got in this game, even though we have no qualms with how we did on punt returns last year – Bernard is going to do great back there and he showed that when he got his chance.”
Joe remembers talking to a Bucs type late last season and Joe told the Bucs fellow that Humphries was a solid punt returner but he didn’t wow Joe. So perhaps the Bucs needed a guy that would be a threat to take a punt to the house.
Joe was told that “safe is good” when it comes to punt returns.
Apparently, Koetter is looking for something a bit more more than just safe.

He has a quicker twitch than Hump. That’s needed back there. Ask that dude in carolina about it. It’s a little different in the pros man.

@Joe … “Apparently, Koetter is looking for something a bit more more than just safe.”
BucsRealist … I can’t resist. Here’s a Defense Rules ‘repost’ just for you from yesterday’s JBF piece on Adam Humphries:
“Against the Bears Reedy returned 1 punt … for 17 yds (very nice job I thought). In terms of snaps, Humphries was on the field for 41 of our 71 offensive snaps (and 0 ST snaps), while Reedy was on the field for 7 offensive snaps (plus 5 ST snaps). Maybe Dirk Koetter & Nate Kaczor (ST coach) are seeing a bigger picture than most of us fans (and media) do?”
Koetter & Kaczor seeing a bigger picture? Whodathunkit?

Reedy knew coming in he was on the bubble, and like others, he had to shine on special teams. That’s good heads up. And we can just ask guys like Glanton and Lynch, who also enjoy a roster spot due to their play on special teams; and Corey Lynch has already affirmed the Bucs decision to keep him last week.

While I really love Humphries play on offense, Im a big fan of Bernard Reedy!
Another of the new Bucs- great talent, Great person!
Adam Humphries is gonna get his snaps.
If Punt returns help Bernard get in the field- Im all for it!
Hopefully these two options will help Coach Koetter Relax. He seems to be unhappy about our returners since he got here.
Hopefully, hes finally found his men!

Safe is definitely good back there. They look close to the same returning. Im all for Reedy getting the snaps too. Even more so after reading some inspiring stories about Reedy the person. Big heart, good man. Take it to the house Bernard. Go Bucs

Glad Reedy is here. Hump is much more valuable doing his thing of catching balls over the middle! Bucs ST looked pretty good last week. Go Bucs!!
