Bucs Trade J.J. Wilcox For A Draft Pick

September 3rd, 2017

Trader Jason Licht

General manager Jason Licht continues to wheel and deal.

After signing three-time Pro Bowl safety T.J. Ward last night, pending a physical, this afternoon Licht moved safety J.J. Wilcox and a 2019 seventh round pick to the Steelers for a sixth-round pick in 2018.

That’s pretty cool, since Wilcox was signed in free agency in March, and now, the Bucs peddle away his entire contract and land a better pick.

Of course, sixth-rounders aren’t exactly treasures, but they can be solid ammunition to trade up. And good GMs can find the occasional gem with a late pick.

Great, more ammunition to move back into; the (2018) 2nd round.

    *O/T – Alex Boone?

  2. Wright in Montana Says:

Might want to look that over again Joe…. The Bucs didn’t net any pics because we traded Wilcox to Steelers AND a 2019 draft 7th round pick. This is from the Bucs website.

  3. Broy34 Says:

TJ ward and two picks for a free agent pickup ? Yes please. Licht continues to impress. You already know he will look at these picks as free picks and will ABSOLUTELY trade up

  4. Easy Denman Says:

I knew as soon as they signed Ward he was gone. Ward will fit in this rotation nicely with Tandyman and Conte the great.

  7. nwbucfan Says:

i believe we traded away Wilcox and our 2019 7th round pick in exchange for a 2018 6th round pick..

  8. You go Joe Says:

So who wanted our 2nd round pick Justin Evans out after signing Ward. Ya dunce

  9. JonBuc Says:

The Bucs get a 6th in 2018 and gave back a 7th in 2019. Bucs traded away their 7th next year for drafting Stevie T. this year…who went to IR.

  10. JayBucBoi Says:

    Wilcox and a 2019 7th, in exchange for a 2018 6th and a salary dump.

  11. gotbbucs Says:

    Wrong

  12. Maze Says:

No No this is not correct Joe lol

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    nwbucfan is correct….we get a 6th in 18 and give up a 7th in 19

Nevertheless, this is a great deal for us…..we are only paying 1.625 more for Ward over the Wilcox contract……

I suspect Ward is a bridge player to get Evans ready for 2018. Any draft improvement is great because we paid nothing for Wilcox to begin with.

    Good job, Jason.

  14. JAB83 Says:

Money Man Licht at it again…. What impresses me most is that he moved on from a bad FA signing QUICK.

Might we do the same with our DL here soon???

  15. James Walker Says:

This is how NE does it.

  16. mike Says:

Not sure what to think, wasn’t super impressed with Wilcox, but

concerned that this new guy knows nothing of our defense week 1

  17. PRBucFan Says:

and y’all wanted to doubt the fact that Wilcox was gone the moment we got Ward lol.

    Told ya so

  18. mike Says:

Seems smart aside from learning curve

  19. Steven007 Says:

This is the only move that made sense after the ward signing. All the Conte haters need to understand that the coaching staff likes the guy. And from midseason last year on he’s been a good player for us.

  20. Howard Cosell Says:

This is how NE does it.

    Exactly

  21. tnew Says:

In days of yore we would’ve just cut him without netting any benefit. Moving up from a 7th to 6th is at least something.

  22. Kstoges Says:

I’m literally so happy we got Tj ward he’s a beast and we’ll look great in red and pewter mike smith will use him perfect to Im telling you guys he could take our defense to another level now we have stars at like almost every position group except d end on defense and our offense is stacked now to Im just literally so hyped rn lol

  23. Buc1987 Says:

No no no no this is all wrong…

(just wanted to be part of the thread)

  24. USFBUC Says:

This seems like a nice move

  25. Patbucfan87 Says:

    I with you kstoges.
Also that 6th rd pick will almost undoubtedly be used in a trade up next summer.

  26. NOSBOS Says:

I’m curious to know if like DeSean could T.J have gotten more money elsewhere???

  27. Patbucfan87 Says:

Nosbos, I would say absolutely. But I think he beleaves the same thing d Jax did. Joe Haden just got like 8 mil/yr right? Took him like 3 days to sign. We had this one in the bag by 2 am

  28. BucOBrews Says:

This will work out for the better. Conte better learn from this guy.

  29. LifeOfABucFan Says:

    NOSBOS..

I believe I heard that DJax could have made a lot more elsewhere..but it was his choice to be a Buc cause of Jameis..

  30. Mike Says:

They better trade up with it because try seem to blow half of these rounders

  31. Mike Says:

    Late rounders

  32. Cobraboy Says:

    Ward>Wilcox x 2

  33. Rod Munch Says:

In Madden you can flip a 6th round pick for a 4th and a 7th in the following years draft, you can then flip that 4th for a 3rd and a 6th in the following year and flip the 7 for a 4th. You can then flip that 3rd for a 2nd in the following years draft, then you can flip that 2nd for a 1st in the following years draft and you still have a 4th and 7th left as well.

So this 6th could really turn into something if EA nailed how trades work in the NFL and we’re patient.

  34. martinii Says:

Guess all thats left is moving Ryan Griffin to IR and re-signing Garrison Sanborn Good trade although I may have cut Lynch and kept 5 safety’s. Lb corp strong, but Conte and Evans are unpredictable at this point. Wilcox had a pretty good training camp.

  35. NOSBOS Says:

Pat I kinda figured that. Life I caught that coming from Licht on HardKnocks also. It leads me to believe this team is not a secret around the league and quite a few folks have become sold on the Bucs making BIG noise this season. I think this just the beginning of BIG names choosing the Bucs over bigger money in other places. They know that young QB is next BIG man on campus.. And wanna ride wit’em. Remember Miko said we chose Tampa because of Fameis.

  36. NOSBOS Says:

It’s Fameis man. That’s t the draw. No knock #93 I just never heard anyone say I wanna go to Tampa and play wit Gerald. It’s Fameis.

  37. CautiousOptimism Says:

This helps generate a pass rush in 2017 how?

  38. NOSBOS Says:

How some can’t see it puzzles me. THEY ARE ALREADY BEING DRAWN TO TAMPA.

  39. NOSBOS Says:

Pass rush was fine in 2016. You people’s minds are so easily controlled by headlines.

  40. NOSBOS Says:

Again Pete stated on the “Outrage in denver”thread at 10:38 our efficiency in the pass rush last. Even left yo @$$ a link to read. GTFOH wit that weak s&$@.

  41. NOSBOS Says:

Man add a 3x pro bowler to the secondary and you dumb@$$’s still complain.

  42. Rod Munch Says:

CautiousOptimism – If you have better coverage and the QB has to hold the ball a bit longer then that will make your pass rush more effective, at least statistically speaking. In the real world if you have a safety who isn’t Chris Conte on the field then perhaps that allows you to blitz more and you will dramatically increase the pass rush if you send David on a blitz since he’s the best pass rusher on the team.

  43. darin Says:

    Nosbos
Pitt would have paid him more. Theyre paying wilcox quite nicely. Im guessing he couldve gotten 3 yrs 6 per with pitt. Maybe more they need safeties bad. Tampa is hot right now. Finally back to tbe days where guys wana come here, as u said. With jameis n hard knocks letting these guys see whats happening here, its a destination. A week from today baby!!! Go Bucs

  44. NOSBOS Says:

Pas rush pass rush pass rush, did I miss something??? When did having a fantastic pass rush constitute your team winning a superbowl??? I mean does that guarantee anything.

  45. NOSBOS Says:

Mofos comment like we had ten sacks total last season or some s@×%.

  46. NOSBOS Says:

NE 16th Atl 18th on that list Pete provided from last season.

  47. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

So damn funny! I read the other article about the pick up first and Fred E saying Wilcox wasn’t going anywhere. Dude was damn certain about it too! Nice call Fred! LOL!

  48. NOSBOS Says:

I’ll tell you what you need in today’s game. You need to put up 30 points a game. That’s the new defense.

  49. Rod Munch Says:

How good is TJ Ward exactly? I never paid any attention to him but how good is he compared to like the 2003 version of John Lynch? Could this finally be our payback, at least in a limited regard, to the very very low IQ decision of Gruden to cut Lynch (and not resign Sapp – and yes it was 100% Gruden’s decision). Maybe TJ can come in and play for us at a pro bowl level for the next 4 seasons and be a pro-bowler, because that’s what our 5x Pro Bowler Lynch did for Denver. Maybe this will at least make up for some of the awful moves of Gruden…

  50. AlteredEgo Says:

This will be GREAT for Justin Evans…..excellent !!

Don’t be silly; Wilcox, Tandy, and Conte aren’t going anywhere. Lynch perhaps. And it won’t be a trade.

  52. Smoky mountain bucs fan Says:

Who cares if it’s 6th 7th, heck bring back 12 rounds! TJ will put some wood on ya… worry about next year, NEXT YEAR! Go Bucs

  53. James Walker Says:

For $1.5M they got a better safety and picks. HAHAHAH!

  54. unbelievable Says:

The Licht haters crack me up.

  55. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I’m not unhappy. Obviously. Ward can make a positive difference. And barring injury, he will stay longer than a year.

  56. JimBuc2 Says:

Follow the Licht! I’ve got a feeling our GM gets his extension and maybe GM of the year. GO BUCS

  57. Bradentonbuc Says:

Why have the Bucs not announced this?

  58. Pickgrin Says:

    Awesome job Jason Licht.

Upgrade the safety position with a 3X Pro Bowler who is 30 and NOT washed up. Trade your career back-up FA who had no chance of starting and pick up a little draft equity.

Denver players and fans are not happy and that means we should be.

  59. Bradentonbuc Says:

By this I mean TJ ward, clearly this trade happened but we have plenty of cap space so besides a roster spot what’s the holdup

  60. carry that mofostick Says:

hey ya’ll we are primed and ready for a deep ass playoff run, and maybe the lombardi too!!!!!! come get you some NFCS, and the rest of ya’ll pretenders, because the bucs are contenders that’s right i said it i meant it and i’m here to represent it, go bucs!!!!

  61. USFBUC Says:

Was the salary of Sheldon Richardson just out of reach for us? I would have loved for us to go after him. The Seahawks got a steal of a trade.

  62. Buc4Lyfe79 Says:

    @Joe
Props to you for sniffing the possible trade b4 it happened. To me this was a stupid move though. Justin Evans isn’t ready to start, Period. So what are they expecting, Ward to come in and learn the ins & outs of both free and strong safety in Mike Smith’s scheme to keep Evans from having to be inserted if Conte or Tandy go down? This to me was a move worthy of Lovie Smith idiocracy levels. Trade away the guy who has been in the system for almost half a year now and has been picking off passes every other day throughout training camp. Who came here excited about what Mike Smith could do to better him as a player and obviously had bought in enough that he was making his presence felt during camp smh…7 days until kickoff and if Conte or Tandy go down, it’s left up to a rookie and/or an “established” player who will have a grand total of 6 days to learn his playbook, but people are happy because of the name TJ Ward smh… Just what the hell is it with Jason Licht and Dallas free agents anyway? Looks to be a “Bucs life” yet again and the season hasn’t even started.

  63. cometowin2 Says:

Another great move by Licht. I love that he frequently gets a player from the draft and then gets a pro bowl mentor, if he doesn’t already have one, often with the same body type and game to teach him how to be a pro. I want to see a fairly high DT next draft that McCoy can groom for the 3 technique. Be cool, not suggesting we get rid of McCoy. I don’t get people that don’t respect Gerald’s game.

I wish we could trade a 1st or 2nd for Von Miller. Denver is rebuilding. That would be perfect. They’re obviously already planning to use the 3-4 more. No more issues with pass rush. With Vonn Miller we would bring in the 2nd Lombardi this year if Doug is 2015 Doug. The next 10 years are bright. If Jameis is who I think he is, he might even play for less like Brady because they want to win so bad. It’s going to be hard to keep this team together if he wants the huge contract.

    Mike Evans – Vincent Jackson
    Justin Evans – TJ Ward
    Chris Godwin – DeSean Jackson
Ali Marpet & Donovan Smith – Logan Mankins
Kwon Alexander & Kendell Beckwith – Lavonte David
    Vernon Hargreaves – Brett Grimes
JMac – Doug Martin – The man’s allowed the occasional miss.
    Noah Spence – ?

  66. webster Says:

    @ rod

You are mistaking of what you speak. Sapp has said it was kiffin who was behind his departure. Due to our salary cap issues, the bucs went to kiffin and asked who could he lose and still be effective. He said kiffin chose booger due to “potential.” Sapp did not leave here on good terms with kiffin. Thats why he blasted him alot in his book and interviews since he has been gone. I remember on inside the nfl where he says kiffin is “your” guy. My guy is marinelli. Gruden has even stated he never wanted sapp to leave. Anybody that knows gruden knows he wants all the players he could get. Letting go sapp is not in his DNA.

  67. webster Says:

And to say gruden got rid of lynch is a stretch as well. You forget lynch missed almost the whole season with a neck injury. I can see that as an organization just choosing a young phillips ready to step in who had played well in lynch’s absence. Phillips just proved to not be durable. Not many players come back from neck injuries like lynch.

That’s not how it was reported at the time or since then. According to Sapp himself, in was Kiffin’s idea to let him get away.

And so far as Lynch…that was a judgement call because of his injury. I’m not going to say you are wrong about it being Gruden’s decision…I don’t know if it was or not. But the man had a bad neck injury. That had to factor in.

  71. Rod Munch Says:

LOL! It was Gruden’s team – it was HIS call, period. All these excuses about salary are just that, excuses. Gruden was sick of people saying he won with Dungy’s team and he was going to PROVE he was a football genius and WIN on offense. Funny how that salary cap situation wasn’t an issue when Gruden gave big money to an injured Charlie Garner, or when he signed a couple of mid-30s offensive linemen, or when he found some change to sign Tim Brown, etc etc etc.

Gruden got McKay fired after McKay wouldn’t sign a 54-year old Andre Rison that couldn’t break at 9.5 on the 40. Gruden went to the Glazers and threw a hissy fit and got McKay fired and then he went back to Oakland’s front office and got Bruce Allen hired to be his stooge and to take the blame for all his terrible personnel picks, and that’s why it’s laughable every time Gruden is on MNF talking about how he wishes he had this QB or that QB – he’s the one that never got any of that done, in particular in the draft because as Chris Simms has made clear, Gruden HATED rookie QBs, that’s why he never took one when he had the chance to, like say Aaron Rodgers for example. It’s also why he wasted season after season signing every 30+ RB, WR and QB he could find, it was because he hated working with young players.

Gruden destroy the Bucs in order to remake them in his image – and his image was Jeff Garcia, Charlie Garner, Joey Galloway, Tim Brown and not Sapp, Lynch, Brooks, Rice and Barber.
