Sweezy Speaks!

August 22nd, 2017

Discusses health.

Guess who Joe spotted last week in the Bucs locker room after the win in Jacksonville? That would be none other than right guard J.R. Sweezy!

The Bucs have done a good job keeping him under wraps this summer. But Joe got a chance to talk with Sweezy — who has always been kind to Joe — last week and the subject was about his health.

Last year the Bucs signed Sweezy but he never played a snap, never buckled a chin strap as he had to have back surgery. The only time Sweezy was spotted on gamedays was getting a soft drink before or at halftime of a game. He was parked in a suite near the press box for Bucs players that are inactive.

Sweezy won’t talk about his back surgery — he wouldn’t discuss it during OTAs, either, other than to confirm he had some sort of a disc issue. Two games into the preseason, no problems, Sweezy said.

“I feel great,” Sweezy said. “I really do.”

Sweezy noted, as can be expected, playing with a new line — he couldn’t even take the practice field last year — and having a new center, the line is still gelling but he thinks everything will be fine.

“There is always room for improvement,” Sweezy said.

As far as his personal game, Sweezy again said he feels great but he can improve in just about every way.

    Great story

He looks massive out there!!! Shhhhhheeeeee-it… He’s also a massive upgrade to the line this year along with Marpet moving to center. Glad the back is back big fella;)

Couldn’t really tell he hasn’t played in more than a year.

We tend to forget that these guys are humans with all the attendant feelings, frailties.

Just as in all walks of life there are always some real losers like Ghost Johnson and ASJ who DO simply play for a big paycheck.

In my experience most of these guys are prideful athletes with fiercely competitive personalities. While we keyboard warriors were taking all the cheap shots at Sweezy last year…making fun of Licht….I think Sweezy was beyond frustrated. The LAST thing he wanted was to sit out a year!!!

He’s a guy who already had an edge…if he’s truly healthy I wouldn’t want to be the DL across from him this year. I think he’s fired up and ready to put last year far behind him.

So far so good. Just glad this didn’t turn into another Carl Nicks type situation.

  6. ARGH_M8E Says:

THE NAME “CARL NICKS” DRIVES ME INSANE!!! MRSA SUX, AND MUST HAVE CRUSHED HIM… CRUSHED US TOO. SPEAKING OF CRUSHED, HE DESTROYED US FOR THE ENEMY “SAINTS AND DREW BREES” AND THEN WE GOT NOTHING OUTTA THIS MASSIVE MOUNTAIN OF A MAN. WTF

  7. Wausa Says:

He does look enormous. Watching the line though it is fairly obvious that Ali Marpet is the most dominant.

The only reason we got mrsa and nicks is no longer with the Bucs is bc gmc was on the team

Sweezy never seemed like he was just collecting a check last year. Guys with his kind of attitude would be far more intent mauling and pancaking tackles.

Had to be frustrating. If he stays relatively healthy throughout the season, the Bucs will should accolades for not rushing him back on the field.

The good news is he has all year to vent on opponents.

He looks like something out of a Mad Max film on the football field. Last week DeSean on the end around play there was one O linemen down field on that play.. J.R. Sweezy. One of those dudes that seem to just love that ish. Competing.

  11. JAB83 Says:

Yeah NOSBOS, Never mind crushing the D Line man across from him. He does that for fun. The real treat is when he crushes a DB 15 yards down field ON A FREAKING RUN PLAY.

Put him at full back for ALL short yardage plays…. 4 and 3 should not scare anyone but the other team…. LOL

    Hey O Line take note.

  12. 813bucboi Says:

he has been a pleasant surprise….the oline has really looked solid with marpet at center…pamphile moving people around and c.benenoch has looked decent….continue to build depth and we’ll be fine….GO BUCS!!!!

I cleaned Carl Nick’s roof, and no one was more disappointed then him that things did not work out for him, here in Tampa.
Sweezy is the man who opened holes in Seattle for their running back, who was known for going into “Beast Mode”.
Hopefully, Sweezy stays healthy this year.

    Marpet = Mongo

Sweezy = Mongo’s bully older brother
