Marpet Injury Decision Looms For Friday

August 9th, 2017

Another morning on floppy-hat patrol at training camp for Ali Marpet today, though Marpet doesn’t wear a hat.

His right ankle was taped up again and it was another morning of watching Joe Hawley, Evan Smith, Josh Allen and the other centers grind it out in the sun.

New to the center position, Marpet certainly needs the reps. But the Bucs have a day off tomorrow and Friday night they kick off in Cincinnati to start the preseason.

That’s a meaningless game for must Bucs starters, but Marpet can’t be placed in that category. He’s never taken a snap at center in an NFL game of any kind.

But do you put Marpet on the Bengals’ artificial turf if his ankle isn’t 100 percent? Joe couldn’t do it. And the hope here is the Bucs feel the exact same way.

I agree Joe, too important. As long as he gets some game reps before season. Suh in your face week 1 is a tough way to kick off the switch. Go Bucs

  2. SOEbuc Says:

Oh my God I prey this is nothing serious. I was one of the people that wanted to keep him at Guard (crying). This injury would of never happened if you hadn’t moved him to Center (crying).

  3. Roy T. Buford Says:

    He will not play Friday.

  4. FONZ BUCCARELLII Says:

Sit this one out big fella plenty of time before week 1!

Suh will make you a quick study and we’ll know right away if Marpet is made for this JOB, I know he is and he will step up BIG time right off the bat!

    Steel Sharpens Steel!

Play Ali but sit Jameis. Remember in 2015 the bengals almost broke jw’s ankles like they bent it in half. I think he played with a limp the whole season.

  6. Pick6 Says:

i wonder how much of the DTs flashing is Marpet still working on getting set quickly after the snap…either way, Marpet needs the preseason reps but not at the risk of aggravating something that could then linger into the regular season

  7. Pickgrin Says:

Depends on the severity of the sprain – but I would certainly play it cautious with Marpet’s return. No need to risk a re-aggravating over and over situation for him this season by rushing him back during pre-season. He’s gotten plenty of reps snapping in camp so far and there’s another game after this one coming pretty quickly.

Let Hawley sweat and work a little to earn his signing $. And perhaps show why it would be a good idea for the team to keep him around. I believe Hawley to be on the bubble this year believe it or not.

Agree Joe and Cincinnati’s artificial turf is brutal.

I’ve always thought 2 preseason games are more than enough…the rest is just to find out which of these 3rd stringers belong and which should be cut loose.

  9. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    Is he limping?

  10. THETRUTH Says:

    Zuttah just got released

  11. DB55 Says:

Didn’t zuttah play center for the Ravens?

  12. Rod Munch Says:

Yeah Zuttah played center with the Ravens – I thought he was moved as a salary issue since the Ravens are like the one team in the NFL that has a legit cap issue.

The Bucs do have Evan Smith and Joe Hawley still on the roster so there is no reason to rush Marpet back. I get that he needs reps, but what’s he going to play in week one of the preseason, maybe 2 series at the most. Forget it, sit out, play next week.

  13. DB55 Says:

    Rid

Evans and Hayley are both garbage. I like hawley but his knees are gone and I don’t think you could get a soggy bologna sandwich for Evans. Bring in the competition. Bring in BALLERS!

I’m there about every day watching close up. Marpet is doing well but needs reps at practice. He’s fitting in just fine. Rest him until Monday, practice him some more, and start in PS Game 2 and 3. He’ll be ready.

  15. Rod Munch Says:

DB55 – Zut was great here, it was a mistake to trade him – but I mean he got cut by the 49ers, he might be done. For preseason I think Evan or Hawley will be OK. Evan Smith has a $4.5-mil cap hit with no guarantee so I really have no idea why he’s on the team.

  16. JB Says:

He’ll definitely play on Friday. Count on it.

They like Evans as a backup at both guard and Center.
Hawley is invaluable to Marpet. Hes played against every DT in the league. And while he may not be an every down, 16 game a year guy- hes as solid a backup as you could ask for.

That doesnt mean you dont get Josh Allen some reps at center. Always want to have a young guy in the wings

Irritates me. Caleb Benenoch isnt listed anywhere on Bucs App- and he wasnt on the Depth chart I saw published.

Which is strange. Heard hes putting up a great fight with Demarr Dotson and Leonard Webster for either the starting Right Tackle spot, or the swing Tackle.
Hes my dark horse to start at Right Tackle. Love Dotson, but Rt is the weak link on the line
