Encouraging Sign

Stingy

No, Joe is no fan of preseason football.

The preseason is an insult to intelligent fans, and a stupid waste of valuable investments. Joe cannot believe so many NFL owners, savvy businessmen, are just fine exposing their multi-million dollar investments to ruin for zero gain.

This would be like Joe buying a new $30,000 pickup from Lakeland Ford and purposely leaving the windows rolled down daily, never changing the oil, and then racing the rig down the Suncoast Parkway like a blind maniac.

Joe also is no fan of quarterback ratings. At best it is a skewered stat. What can Joe say about nonsense that tries to push the idiotic notion David Garrard was a better quarterback than Roger Staubach?

But if a Bucs fan is looking for something to make them feel good, below is such an elixir, by way of the PFF tribe. It seems the cornerback who has allowed the second-lowest quarterback rating when targeted this preseason just happens to be on the roster of the Bucs. And his name is Vernon Hargreaves.

Again, Joe doesn’t know how much stock to put into this. Preseason is a joke and offenses are not likely to throw out elaborate plays on a defense. They keep it vanilla.

Still, it is encouraging sign that Hargreaves, who has two picks in the preseason, is making opposing quarterbacks sweat in August. Now Joe hopes this translates into the regular season.

Didn’t Hargreaves have a couple picks and a similar rating from PFF last preseason?

  2. darin Says:

Not exactly a list of HOFers. I thought 3 of them were linebackers based off name. But yeah not a bad list to be on but not gona matter sept 10th. Nice way to put the preseason too Joe. Too many people riding me cuz i could care less about preseason. I cant grasp it. Maybe youll help em out a lil this way. Unless of course they just bought that ford youre referring to. Hope it at least has seat covers. Go Bucs

The eye test shows me a better VH3. Corner is a tough position to hit the ground running in the NFL.
All though Jalen Ramsey for the Jaguars looked outstanding as a rookie.

I think VH3 and Grimes give the Bucs a very solid starting unit at corner, but the Bucs have got to draft a corner in the first 3 rounds next year.

  4. Bob in Valrico Says:

Hard to take this seriously, since we don’t know the sample size.My guess
is that some of the more established corners in the league may be receiving vet
preference and not playing much in preseason.
I give VH3 two thumbs up for his” ready to wrap” tackling abilities, also believe the Pics will come his way as he improves.

The only thing more useless than PFF ratings is PFF preseason ratings…

Don’t need a Collinsworth flunkie to tell me that Hargreaves is having a solid preseason heading into his sophomore year. I’ve seen more of VH3 this year than they have – guaranteed.

I guess next we’ll be seeing the PFF stats that “scientifically” conclude Jameis Winston is having an excellent preseason throwing the ball – but is prone to the occasional boneheaded play and has thus far struggled in the red zone. Duh – how would I ever know what to think unless PFF tells me its true…

  6. Buc50 Says:

The kid is a baller. He doesn’t just follow the receiver, he competes for the ball. I expect him to get better and better as he gets more experience.

  7. Supersam Says:

Not so encouraging that the dolphins guy is first, and we play them in 2 weeks

  8. Fsuking Says:

The Browns hardly threw to his side. These 2 starters could be dangerous this year! Unfortunately if one of them gets hurt we are screwed because we have 0 depth

  9. SB Says:

$30,000 doesn’t buy much of a truck now a days Joe.

Not having preseason games is kind of like building a nuclear sub and sending it into battle without a shakedown cruise.

  11. Easy Denman Says:

Joe Haden is on the trade block I see.. They should trade a 4th rounder in the 2019 draft for him

    For a backup?

(The Bucs have zero desire to bench Brent Grimes nor Vernon Hargreaves.)

(The Bucs are no longer looking to add to the salary cap because they are already trying to squeeze nickels.)

  16. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

Haden would play outside with grimes and VH3 in the nickel. Plus him and grimes could rotate and prolong both their careers.

  17. Joe Says:

Haden would play outside with grimes and VH3 in the nickel.

Not only are the Bucs not going to move VH3 to nickel, they have zero intention of scaling back his snaps. Same with Brent Grimes. Nor are the Bucs looking to add to the salary cap. If anything, the Bucs are looking to trim the salary cap.

This is fantasy football run amok. Unless Grimes or Hargreaves has some unknown severe injury that might take them off the field for over a month, this isn’t happening.

Besides, Joe is pretty sure that Joe Haden doesn’t want to be a backup. Anywhere.

  18. briandorry55 Says:

In truth, he got lucky a few times.

  19. Wausa Says:

    I agree Joe

We need to extend contracts for Winston, Evans, Marpet, Kwon and Smith next offseason.

I see no starting level free agent signings for the Bucs the next few seasons.

  20. BadHomebre Says:

BSPN “Browns open to trade offers for veteran CB Joe Haden”…l two FL CBs would be nice!

  21. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

How many years does Grimes have in him?

Judging by the preseason, looks like they want Smith to take over for him when he retires, vs. signing a vet to take his spot.

  22. 813bucboi Says:

    he’ll only get better….GO BUCS!!!

  23. Rod Munch Says:

VH3 has looked good, but I’ll just point out he played again Dalton (who is underrated but not a top 15 guy), then against Bortles and a rookie making his first start. You can only play against who you play against, but that’s not exactly murderer’s row. VH3 did look very very good however. The INT on Dalton was a great play and last Saturday night when Kizer was throwing everything at Ryan Smith and getting huge yards, when he went to the other side of the field he got nothing – except the great throw from the end zone that Kizer made, but the coverage was right there, just an excellent pass.

Anywho I thought VH3 played pretty well for a rookie last year and he looks like a guy that will take a nice step up against this year. He still might make a mistake every once in awhile but I think he’ll put up a very nice solid year this year.
