The Dirk Koetter Difference

August 24th, 2017

On point

Dirk Koetter is the 11th NFL head coach Ryan Fitzpatrick has played under (including interim HCs). And after today’s final training camp practice, it was time for Joe to ask Fitzpatrick to explain The Dirk Koetter Difference.

Joe was waiting weeks for the moment.

Who exactly is Koetter the head coach? What makes him standout to a seasoned and reasoned NFL veteran?

The smooth-talking Fitzpatrick had a quick answer.

“He’s consistent with his message,” Fitzpatrick said. “He’s consistent with how he treats us every day. This has been a tough camp but expectations are the same every day. And he’s the same guy every day. So I think that’s important. It’s easy for a player to play for a guy like that when you know what you’re doing to get.

“It’s demanding and it’s tough but he brings the same message very day, and then secondly, I would say he’s prepared. Every meeting, he’s not walking into a meeting without something thought out to talk to the group about. Sometimes it’s about life; sometimes it’s about how we’re going to better. Sometimes it’s about what we did in practice that was wrong. But he really, really prepares for those meetings and takes them seriously. I think that’s great, and I think he’s a great teacher in that regard.”

“So have you experienced the opposite, unprepared head coaches with inconsistent messages?” Joe asked Fitzpatrick.

“Yes I have,” Fitzpatrick said with a smile. “I’ve experienced almost everything.”

“I’ll give you the quick list, and I’m not saying they’re all bad: Mike Martz, Joe Vitt, Scot Linehan, Marvin Lewis, Dick Juron, Perry Fewell, Chan Gailey, Mike Munchak, Bill O’Brien, Todd Bowles and Dirk Koetter. That’s 11.”

Fitzpatrick has been around the block, and Joe enjoyed getting his take on Koetter. It’s not the first time Joe has been told Koetter is all over the details.

Greg Schiano fancied himself as a detail guy, and Joe has been told Koetter is in another league.

Why lie about JoeBucsFan? Your comments were inaccurate and malicious. Of course these are direct quotes from Fitzpatrick.–Joe

We know that Head Coach Koetter and Coach Smitty stressed accountability to the Bucs, The detail and the work ethic to succeed!!!!!! They have the reputation to have players pay attention when they teach!!!!! But when was the start of accountability for the Bucs??? When was the official start of the Turn around????? We have to look at the Glazers!!! It starts at the top!!!!!! and Days before the incompetent one’s firing, some of the “REAL” fans pleaded to the great owners of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers!!!!! Its A “Realist Repost”!!!!!!

    @ The Glazers

These are not tough times!!! It is time to be Tough!!!! Stand up and pull this Franchise out of the garbage!!!! Do not do what is easy and keep the status quo and watch your business flounder!!!!

Now is time to lead!!! If you do what is hard and make the right decision, years from fans will talk about how the owners took over the situation when it looked so bleak, And carried this Franchise back to greatness!!!!

You have to take that chance Mr Glazers!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!

I often wonder what it would be like to run into people like “The Buc Realist” in the real world and then I just start laughing so hard at the thought of that much self importance in what I imagine as a really silly looking shell.

Great Article Joes…thank goodness YOU guys and Ira are the writers!

Schiano was a control freak and fake tough guy, that’s a lot different than a detail guy.

I sent Keir – Joe does a great job and Ira is in a class of his own as a true sports writer, while I disagree with Joe’s strong desire to throw Doug Martin off the top of the Skyway bridge, I still enjoy reading articles with opinions that isn’t all rah rah propaganda, but also isn’t fake news Tom Jones trying to get some clicks from national media garbage. It’s a good balance, and I mean that sincerely, it makes for an entertaining read even when you’re completely and unjustifiably wrong.
